'Seventeen' Socialists in the House? : The Swamp

Our friend and erstwhile colleague, Glenn Thrush at Politico, thinks he has a lead on that list of 17 "socialists'' whom Alabama Rep. Spencer Bachus says are inhabiting the halls of Congress.

Spencer Bachus.jpg

But it gets worse: If our friend is right, there really are 77.

The ranking member of the Financial Services Committee, pictured right, has refused to name names after issuing his claim that there are "17" Socialists on the Hill. Bachus said Thursday that he has "some hope" for President Barack Obama, but worries that socialists in Congress may be pushing him too far to the left. "Some of these guys I work with, the men and women in Congress, are socialists," he said.

But he wouldn't hand over his list, even to the Birmingham News. Asked to clarify his comment. Bachus said 17 members of the U.S. House are socialists. But he gave the name of only a U.S. senator, Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Thrush notes that the Congressional Progressive Caucus, founded in 1991 by then-Rep. Sanders (the independent senator from Vermont who has described himself as a "democratic socialist'' and still is an honorary member of the House caucus) could be what Bachus is talking about. (Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio is a vice-chairman.)

"The Wikipedia entry on the CPC (incorrectly) lists 71 members,'' Thrush notes -- and anyone willing to suggest that there are 17 socialists in the House of Representatives just may be getting his information from Wikipedia. The number actually is 77.

"Seventy-one is just one number flip away from 17,'' notes Thrush, who doesn't stop there: "Conservative groups, like DiscovertheNetworks.org, have long sought to link the caucus's liberal agenda with and "fringe-left socialism" -- describing the caucus as "radical" and maintaining that "Until 1999, worked in open partnership with Democratic Socialists of America.

"That charge seems to have been distilled from a WorldNetDaily.com story which claimed: "Until 1999, the website of the Progressive Caucus was hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America.''

Thrush may be on to something here. But Bachus?

Bachus lives in a sick, slimy, confined little world.
Absurd on the face of it, Spence, since there is no law against being a socialist, communist, fascist, Nazi, Young Republican, whatever.
You can just feel the urge on the part of the right wing to gin up the red scare again.

More lame fear-mongering ... and as is usually the case with the GOP, completely out-of-touch fear-mongering.

On the other hand, it will excite the teabagg'n-Republican base, who are preparing to take to the streets to protest America's descent into making the richest 1-2% pay their fair share of taxes ... or something.

Senator McCarthy wannabee.

These whacko republicans better get a grip on themselves. This is begining to push the limit. Just the talk of "Obama will take your guns" has led to killing already. There is a fine line guys and you are certainly flirting with it.

Seventeen? Is that all? If he knew what socialism is, using the label would be a lot less surprising. Instead, he makes it sound like socialists in Congress represent some fifth column in a foreign conspiracy.

"I have here a list of 205 card carrying Communists...."

McCarthy Lives. Have they no decency? At long last, have they no decency?

Joe McCarthy would be proud of them.

This is PROOF that Repuglicans in congress have serious mental illness problems. Millions of people are losing their jobs and life savings and this nutbag gets a paycheck for WRITING A LIST? What state is this guy from? ......... Alabama? People who support him and Bachmann deserve to have their own special little state. I'll even name it for them.... Moronica. Imbecilia? Bushland?

Seriously, what kind of work has the Republican party done to earn their paycheck? One 19 page kiddie-can-read budget plan with no figures, and nothing for the 95% of people work for a living but more money for the wealthy oligarchs who tanked our economy. Nothing for the infrastructure, economy, healthcare, crime, jobs, etc. Why are these people earning a paycheck if they are not working for the American people or the country?

It seems the next option for the republicans will be a call to arms. Patriotic....every last one of them.

Is that all? I think we need a recount! There must be at least 100...and they all mascaraed as Democrats!!!

The nuts are coming out of the woodwork. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwdOwgD5OsY

I wondered how long it would take the Rabid Right to get into their clownish outfits !!! We are having another witch hunt, ladies and gentlemen of America !! Are we going to burn them at the stake or will we be electrocuting them, this time !!? Why not televise beheadings and make money off of the sideshow !! Leave it to the moronic Right, The Republican (WMD) Party, to attack fellow Americans because they disagree with their failed and stupid policies !!! The Republican(WMD) Party just doesn't know when to get smart and when to stay stupid !! I guess they are going with the latter !!

incogno,
Yeah, Glenn Beck and the party of 'T-Baggers'. Google that!

Fact is, America has been a capitalist/socialist hybrid since the Teddy R. admin.

There's more I'm sure.

Name names.

CM.
It's funny the Republicans like to claim the mantel of the T-bagging party. (The unfortunate lass is America, alas.)

They can never get their own nomenclature right. When Walks Like a Duck went to South America as VP he gave a big OK hand signal when he got off the plane. It means something else entirely down there.

Teabag Terri,
Don't be so "hard" on yourself...

Seventeen? That's all??

Just visit the web site.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus was established in the U.S. House of Representatives in the early 1990s. It reflects the diversity and strength of the American people, and we seek to give voice to the needs and aspirations of all Americans and to build a more just and humane society.
Note that Waxman, Waters & Frank are members of an organization which is anti-capitalistic and they are in charge of the Finance committee. This makes the video on You Tube giving the time line for the banking crises make sense. Waters said Fannie and Freddie were not broke because of Raines. I wonder if those commenting will use Alinsky's Rules of Radicals and begin to ridicule those who disagree with them?

More lame fear-mongering by The Swamp.

But I have a suggestion for Mr. Silva. A suggestion so wild, so unprecedented, so bold, I'm sure it will never be followed. And it's this: Mark, since you write about Cong. Bachus, why don't you talk to him to get his side of the story?

Yes, actually talk to the person you write about. What a radical concept. It used to be called, "journalism."

Here's the number of Bachus's office: 202 225-4921. Unless your phone system automatically blocks calls to Republicans, this number should work.

Truth will Always'WILL out'
truth Can Not be hidden or distroted. Masses believing Lies NEVER makes the LIES a truth.Barring truth does not stop truth.Justice begins with truth.Socialists have always destrpyed themselves for after they destroyed all the people allowed them to destroy they destroyed each other. Too bad for that they never learn but Truth IS Justice

Hey Mark,

I agree with Teresa (see above).
You should phone that goofball Wingnut Spencer Bachus and ask him if he has anything else to say.

Nowadays there is nothing funnier than giving a fear-mongering Repub congresscritter (Bachus, Michelle Bachman etc) an open mic and another opportunity to do what they do best - scare and repulse even more Americans than they already have.

The real question isn't how many "socialists" are in Congress (Sanders is the only one I've heard of there), the question is when will voters stop sending to Congress ill-informed ideologues like Bachus.

I think the real question is how many Republican religio-fascists there are in the house.

Give me them names of those pinko, commies, socialist, so I can contribute to their campaigns. Those comrades, along with the Democrats, are the only ones in our government, that care about the citizens of America, and not the corporations, like the Party of the WMD, the Republicans, do !! I wish the Republican Party would just go out there and find those, missing WMD !! That would give them something to do, other that to hope and pray, that President Obama, and America, fail !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I think you already have, Don. They’re called Democrats.

See the Right wingers look at the words "a more just and humane society." and they see "anti-capitalistic."

Apparently they want a less just and humane society. They don't want "the needs and aspirations of all Americans" to be given voice. They only want the needs of the select few at the top to be given voice.

It's not so much that they are against socialism, it's that they are rabidly for Plutocracy.

It's a shame some people haven't figured it out by now: this is how Republicans have managed to get in a position where they can royally screw everything up. As long as they could distract Republicans with the "liberal menace", they wouldn't care how radical, how foolish, or how hypocritical the person they were defending was. American needs the Republicans to grow up and focus on real problems and real solutions, and if the current guys aren't up to it, get people in there who can handle it.

Yes they are. Read the book on the 2Nd bill of rights by Roosevelt. You will understand that this has been going on along time. Roosevelt said that we needed only two parties one for Liberals and one for Conservatives and he was for the Liberal Democratic Party. Read the Book!
