Secretary of State Hillary Clinton got an honorary degree when she adressed the graduates of New York University today from the infield of Yankee Stadium.
Vice President Joe Biden got an honorary degree when he addressed the graduates of Syracuse University.
Even Oprah Winfrey got one at Duke University's commencement.
But President Barack Obama will not get one this evening when he addresses the graduates of Arizona State University. The school, which has honored the likes of Cesar Chavez, 1992, Walter Cronkite, 1989, Art Buchwald, 1988, Mo Udall, 1987, Henry Cisneros, 1986, Erma Bombeck, 1980, George Romney, 1962, and Barry Goldwater, 1961, said Obama had not accrued a "body of work'' sufficient for the honor.
Obama will even draw an honorary degree from the University of Notre Dame this weekend, the Catholic campus where the appearance of the pro-abortion-rights-pro-emryonic-stem-cell-research president has created a stir and is prompting a protest sit-out Sunday among some of the school's graduating seniors and others.
Instead, the Arizona university, which was somewhat embarrassed by the original round of publicity surrounding its lack of a degree for the president, is naming its biggest scholarship program for the president -- the Obama scholars.
The school says: "President Barack Obama represents outstanding academic achievement, thoughtfulness, a long record of service to others, inspired leadership and a commitment to building strong communities across this country. He has set new standards for what is possible in America, and encouraged people around the world to pursue their dreams.''
Just no "body of work'' for the author of two best-selling books, including a memoir written in his 20s -- years before Alaska's Sarah Palin got around to writing a memoir, though we're missing her on the commencement circuit and degree-stage too -- and the first African-American president of the United States.

Big deal, an honorary degree from Arizona St isn't worth the paper that it's printed on seeing as how they already gave one to that village idiot Shrub Jr.

To be fair, LoungeAct, a regular degree from ASU probably isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Puhleezzee . . . his REAL degrees far outshine any thing ASU could offer!!!

LoungeAct, Where did you get that ASU has given Pres. Bush an honorary degree?
Posted by: ChiliMac | May 13, 2009 5:38 PM
Funny, I have a degree from ASU. I also have a degree from -- gasp -- Harvard Law (the same as my ol' pal Barry O.).
ASU is just like any other large public university in the sense that it can be whatever you'd like it to be. Want to party? Done. Want to get serious and receive an excellent education? It can do that too.
Me? Well I did both, if you are wondering. :)

The Liar in Chief won't be happy about this. He has very thin skin. Left-nuts will call them racists.

Reflects poorly on ASU. It makes them seem very small minded. A graduate of Columbia and Harvard Law, I seriously doubt that Obama gives a damn. The failed to realize that most of their students voted for Obama last November.

What has ASU done to be able to award honorary degrees?

How much does it cost the American Tax Payers for his trip to Phoenix? How much for the trip to South Bend?
Well over $1 Million dollars for each trip. Is this money well spent?
Posted by: Joliet Jay | May 13, 2009 6:33 PM
This is the same state that did not observe Martin Luther King day. I can only guess what the real reason is.
Posted by: Mike | May 13, 2009 6:56 PM
Silva has written at least four whiny posts about this tired topic. Nobody cares, Silva. Oddly, I have yet to see Silva blog about how Obama is fighting the release of photos depicting abuse of prisoners. Transparency? Not so much. Another phony promise to the naive cheeto eating base that bites the dust.

Could it be some folks at ASU are po'ed about McCain not winning the presidency?
Naahhh...

Arizona State has 'issues' incompatible' with fairness and integrity. I'm glad though five students will have a paid education, much better than a State University Degree that is a biased state, so it was predictable. Obama probably has more experience than the last 15 President's that held offfice, because of his age though, the old extremists didn't think.

The American tax payer is on the hook for his travel and protection, true. OUR President is speaking to young men and women who voted for the first time and will care for the nation when we are older. That's a fairly important task. It's a shame that WE didn't have an articulate President during the past eight years who could handle such a task.
Republicants still can't accept the fact that failed as a party and the nation ended their reign of destruction. What happened to the McCain/Palin battle cry "Nation First"? Nah, it seems that it is far easier to whine about the man rather than actually have a plan. Just like the guy who sits in the stands screaming at the team on the field, you are pitiful. Try pulling together or you'll find that in 2012, we'll beat you like a drum again.

Arizona State University officials must have had a conversation similar to this.
Republicans: "I hear that Obama guy will be speaking."
University: "Yes, is that problem?"
Republicans: "Well you know, things cost a lot of money these days. You might find yourself in some financial trouble if you waste money on an expensive honorary degree."
University: "Gotcha."

ASU has made history. Having been awarded the favor of having the first African American President in the history of the republic deliver his first commencement address there, it turned around and : proclaimed for the world and all its students and all prospective students that achieving, among other things, two Ivy League degrees, one with highest honors from Harvard Law, and being elected President of the Harvard Law Review, becoming a constitutional law professor, being a state senator for 10 years (introducing over 800 pieces of legislation), being electing a U.S. Senator and being elected the President of the United States of America and leader of the free world - is actually: NO ACHIEVEMENT AT ALL!! Obama still has to prove himself to these people!
And some of the responses from the ASU Communications Office showed that these folks didn't even realize how NUTS they sounded.

Clearly it's because they're RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACISTS!!!!!!!!
Posted by: UnfrozenCavegirlBlogger | May 13, 2009 8:14 PM
Yep, absolutely nuts. If you can, check out last night's Daily Show piece on this with Jason Jones. One future ASU degree recipient explains that honorary degress should be reserved for "heads of state." A prior recipient of an honorary degree, a Canadian prime minister removed from office after 142 days, explains that she deserved the honor because she was the first female Canadian prime minister. Some students note that Obama's a "communist" and that Chicago is a "s---hole" because "it's freezing." Other students admit that they would give the honor to historical U.S. presidents, such as Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton. Good points.

Don't blame Republicans for this...every public university in America is dominated by left-wing, pot smoking, maggot infested, hate America, pathetic pieces of garbage...they call themselves professors and administrators!!!

"Obama had not accrued a "body of work'' sufficient for the honor."
Well, Jerry Colangelo(sic) achieved his "body of work" by bringing beisbol to Arizona as the original owner of the Arizona Diamonbacks.
Now, that's a "body of work" when you consider that the DBacks attract close to 3,000,000 attendees every year! How many bodies has Obama drawn to Arizona?
You guys are completely out of step if you consider "body of work" to have any reference to an influence that a person has had on society.
At ASU, "body of work" means how many people can you attract so we can sell them junk and help "our" local economy. You Dems are so stupid to think it would have anything to do with a person's contribution to society outside of Arizona!
TOTAL SNARK, and deservingly so

Joe - I take it you never went to college.

Like PE said....
"By the time I get to Arizona..."
What do you expect from a state that didn't honor Martin Luther King Jr.
Posted by: NW Side | May 13, 2009 9:30 PM
I know a 63 year old rich kid (his father was a millionaire) who falsely claims to have graduated from ASU with a major in business and a minor in music. (He is posing as a Chicago music producer, and people are eating it up.)
So all President Obama has to do is just say that he is a graduate of ASU, and it won't even have to be honorary.

Obama has plenty of toilet paper... he needs no 'honorary diploma' from ASU...
Posted by: bigwhoop | May 14, 2009 1:24 AM
Once again a class act in the President. Can't say the same for ASU.
Posted by: Joe | May 14, 2009 3:24 AM
Obama is as good an orator as Lincoln- maybe better. Thinking back on Obama's speech about his pastor- he took a skillful attempt to discredit him and completely turned it around into a soaring moral lecture which will be become standard textbook material. He did it again at ASU. The attempt to disgrace him was turned around into a world class speech on the pettiness of status symbols and greed. Although many of us don't yet appreciate what we are seeing - we are privileged to witness another Abraham Lincoln in our own times.

I have visited ASU. I would not have expected anything more than what they have done. They set very low standards for themselves, which they constantly fail to achieve.
Posted by: Thom Hartmann | May 14, 2009 7:23 AM
Joe,
Based on your posts, I take it you don't have a degree and have never been inside a college classroom.

"Tele-Prompter of the United States" is as horrible public speaker. He stutters and cannot speak on his own. I would call he a disaster and an embarrassment.
ASU asked for his birth certificate and got no reply so no degree.

This thread of comments is most revealing in what it says about us. Most are busy in the mud. Why?
Alan Jacobs and too few others see something more. What is it?
Who can argue with what Obama said?
Maybe his comments fit us all who are already out there.

I would just like to take a moment to ensure that this would not have happened at U of A. University of Arizona has and will be the more focused, disciplined university in the State of Arizona. Obama wanted to reach out to one of the largest student bodies in the country - this has generally been a Right - wing State. Things are changing however and this was a move by Obama to "sell himself" - which I have no problem with at all. Just note this is why ASU was selected - University of Arizona is about 90 minutes south and much more selective than ASU.

I earned a Ph.D degree in Mathematics from ASU in 1972, which was not the best of times. I have since been impressed with some of the planetary science projects being done at ASU. However, the decision of ASU not to give an honorary degree to Barack Obama definitely reflects badly on ASU and all ASU alumni. I am truly ashamed and would gladly give my Ph.D. Degree to President Obama.

I am so utterly disgusted that any university in this country would refuse an "honorary" degree to not only the sitting president of this country, but most likely one of the 2 greatest in our history. All they have done is show their disloyalty, disrespect, & dishonor. What did the McCain/Palin duo tout? Something about PATRIOTISM! Shame on ASU. I hope their enrollment drops significantly & that most of the students transfer to one of the many "honorable" universities throughout our country. Asking for bailout money anytime soon, Arizona?

Obama got in a fabulous snarky comment on the failure of ASU to give him an honorary degree in his speech yesterday at Notre Dame...he neatly inserted a shiv in the back of ASU's president, while smiling broadly.
I comes in the first couple of minutes of his speech too...listen for it after he thanks ND for their awarding him an Honorary Degree!
