It's surely a coincidence that, the day after Vice President Joe Biden suggested that people should avoid airplanes and subway trains because of the swine flu, the White House today announces that Biden will travel to Southeastern Europe this month.
After all, they plan these trips well in advance.
The vice president will travel during the week of May 18 to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo. He will meet with the political leadership of all three nations as well as U.S. officials and military personnel stationed in the region.
He'll have to fly, of course, in that "closed container'' that passes for Air Force Two -- recovering, by then, from what the Washington Post editorial board today called a case of "Foot in Mouth Disease.''
But then, he really wasn't suggesting yesterday that everyone should avoid airplanes and trains -- only people with the flu -- the White House insisted, maintaining they know what he said, but they were certain about what he meant to say.
Fortunately for Biden, too, things have settled down in Bosnia since the days when former First Lady Hillary Clinton landed there "under sniper fire.''
She's secretary of state now, and look who the White House is sending to Bosnia.
