Stirred, not shaken: View of the vice president's mansion from above. Google Earth.
by Mark Silva and updated at 2:15 pm EDT
The town was abuzz with word that Vice President Joe Biden reportedly had disclosed the location of the undisclosed location that his predecessor, Dick Cheney, made mysteriously famous after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
At least this was what Newsweek's Eleanor Clift had disclosed about a dinner-table conversation that Biden had with others at the Gridiron Club's annual white-tie dinner.
But the vice president's office said today that Biden wasn't revealing any buried bunker, and certainly no classified information, in that table talk, but rather talking about an upstairs "workspace'' in the official vice presidential residence that the Bidens have converted to a guest room.
"Joe Biden reveals the bunker-like room is at the Naval Observatory in Washington, where Cheney lived for eight years and which is now home to Biden,'' Clift reported, stirring a frenzy of blog chatter about Biden's famously flapping lips.
The veteran Newsweek hand relayed a tale that the vice president "related the story to his head-table dinner mates when he filled in for President Obama at the Gridiron Club earlier this year. He said the young Naval officer giving him a tour of the residence showed him the hideaway, which is behind a massive steel door secured by an elaborate lock with a narrow connecting hallway lined with shelves filled with communications equipment.
"The officer explained that when Cheney was in lock down,'' Clift reported, "this was where his most trusted aides were stationed, an image that Biden conveyed in a way that suggested we shouldn't be surprised that the policies that emerged were off the wall.''
But Elizabeth Alexander, Biden's spokeswoman, offered this explanation this afternoon: "What the vice president described in his comments was not - as some press reports have suggested - an underground facility, but rather, an upstairs workspace in the residence, which he understood was frequently used by Vice President Cheney and his aides.
"That workspace was converted into an upstairs guestroom when the Bidens moved into the residence,'' Alexander said. "There was no disclosure of classified information.''
All of this could help explain why the aerial view of the official vice president's resdience at One Naval Observatory Circle had been obscured in Google's satellite images of the estate for so long, during Cheney's residency. That was all cleared up within days of new occupants taking charge of the place, explained by Google as a matter of a third-party contractor providing better imagery of the place.
Built in 1893, the Naval Observatory has provided the official home to vice presidents since 1977 -- Walter Mondale then. The gracious hilltop mansion once housed the director of the observatory, which still functions, providing "a wide range of astronomical data,'' and also serves as the official source of time for the Department of Defense.
And, apparently, now a nice new guest room, too.

Comments
The underlying story here is that the massive construction project was tunneling from the CP residence to the new Russian (then USSR) embassy for purposes of spying. One Congressman who objected publicly to the unusually high electrical bill for the VP residence was hushed up immediately. The project was subsequently exposed and shut down. Some have said it did not work anyway. It would make sense to convert the work to a secure bunker and so what? Everybody knows there is one under the White House as well.

Joe just can't stop running that big mouth of his, even when his own security is at stake.

The extent of the Bush Administration's paranoia is still amazing. Those nutcases actually had their fingers on 'the button'?? Maybe we're lucky that the unnecessary invasion of Iraq and a destroyed economy was the worst that happened. It's hard to really believe that they could have screwed up more but paranoid religious fanatics on a mission from god will do stupid things.

the bob bob clearly is a boob boob. The Bush administration had its finger on "the button???" Yeah, smoke some more dope!

Just how much "astronomical data" does an observatory in an urban area provide?
Posted by: DaveB | May 18, 2009 1:37 PM
I just sent a donkey with a message in a bottle to the mountains of Pakistan, addressed to Osama Bin Laden with this latest news..... Way to go Joe. Wear a GPS device too while you're at it, then be shocked when the enemy comes to get you.... sheesh what a moron......
Posted by: rider | May 18, 2009 1:40 PM
thebob, it's time to leave the bunker. It's all clear.
.
By the way, Bush is no longer the President, he was replaced by Illinois politics across the board. The exception is scrappy joe biden. He is filling the new position of Court Jester.
.
Congress destroyed the economy but it's OK. It is now refered to as "yesterdays news". Nothing has really changed regarding the economy, it appears that we needed to pick a dog out first.
.
About the war in Iraq, the new President voted for it, voted to continue funding it, and continues to pour money into it today.
.
Since he is a far left liberal, does this still make the war unnecessary?

To DaveB:
120 years ago, THEY DIDN'T HAVE ELECTRIC STREET LIGHTS.
As with Greenwich in England, it was pretty much out in the boonies when it was built, and it really needs only to measure the sun and bright stars for time-keeping.
More importantly, what type of fool is Biden to say something this stupid? He does not have the authority to reveal this information. Maybe the fool should be prosecuted, lust like Scooter Libby.

Whats this the second national secret he has blerted out now? in less than 6 months? For the love of pete and people said Chaney was a good. Atleast he could resist spilling national secrets to impress his buddies.

I think you're right. We might as well get rid of the Secret Service while we're at it. Why should we bother securing those at the top. In fact, shut down Air Force 1. Let's have the President fly coach. We can send Air Force 1 off on some photo op excursions instead.
...Oh, wait, we already did.

Why don't we just post all the D.C. security plans on the internet?
Bush was paranoid? Yea, like that dream he had about plans taking down tall buildings killing thousands?
What an imagination?

Joe made a mistake. The underground chamber isn't a bunker, but the opening to the Pit where Cheney communed with his Satanic ruler.
Posted by: Larry-T | May 18, 2009 2:02 PM
Somw 4 or 5 years ago (maybe a bit longer) there were articles in the Washington Post about loud noises eminating from the N.O.. Some said therew ere underground explosions, as if there was excavation going on. Everyone knew, that after 9-11, some kind of secure bunker was being built. It was speculated openly. To suggest that this was some kind of national secret is absurd. The N.O. is in a heavily resedential area located off of a busy street. It was no secret-especially when the former VP started disappearing into a secret undisclosed location which soon became known as the "bunker." No national secrets here.

It must be Joe Biden's sole job to make Obama look smart by comparison.
This should raise the question of whether Biden needs to have access to classified information.

For Dan C., electric street lights date to 1875 and were large in number in the U.S. by 1890. So, it's entirely possible that the Naval Observatory could have been running into ground lighting problems 116 years ago.

Keep talking indeed. Look what a path Cheney has cut through the Democrats. Cheney's counter attacks caused Pelosi to fall into her own trap of lies, and Obama finally figured out that military trials are the way to go to prosecute the terrorists. Without Cheney, we'd have terrorists in US courts and Pelosi still telling her lies without consequences.

I wonder if this was Cheney's secret undisclosed location where he was hurried off to after the Sept. 11th attacks. As we all know, the coward Cheney remained in hiding for weeks after the Sept. 11th attacks. We also know Bush and Cheney were provided classified intelligence from England and Israel abount the impending attacks.

This "story" was out there in 2002.
"Besides an underground bunker for Cheney, neighbors have other theories of what the blasts may be all about. One is that the government is digging tunnels to spy on nearby embassies, while another is that they?re building a helicopter hangar"

Pelosi has called for a truth commision. I've yet to hear any of the Repuglicans call for any sort of torture/war crimes investigation and they won't because they know that 75% of the Repuglican party will be implicated in an all out investigation. What Pelosi did or didn't know is besides the point.

Cheney needs a new undisclosed location - a cell awaiting trial for war crimes at The Hague.

Ahhhh Doug R is peddling more hysterical nonsense from the files of the Loony Left. Bush and Cheney got intel from Britain about the impending 9/11 attack?!?!? Please tell more, Doug!
And, ahhh, Doogie and the rest of the Mind-Deranged Left: Cheney was in "hiding" because the Secret Service said so. It is the job of the president and vice president to do as the Secret Service says when it comes to their safety.
Do you cluttered-headed dimwits on the Left have any intelligence whatsoever? Nevermind, it's rhetorical and the we all know the answer is a big, resounding "NO!!"

Now that this is "out," the feds will have to find a new place to hide Joe in an emergency.
Next time, they won't let Joe know until they absolutely have to.
Second, this is going to cost the taxpayers billions as they designed and build a new bunker.
It's all good. This will create jobs and get the economy moving forward again.

It's currently being reported that Biden did not out classified info about Cheney's bunker.
What the Vice President described in his comments was not - as some press reports have suggested - an underground facility, but rather, an upstairs workspace in the residence, which he understood was frequently used by Vice President Cheney and his aides. That workspace was converted into an upstairs guestroom when the Bidens moved into the residence.
Too funny that the Tribune won't report on this until 1 or 2 days after this news broke.
Even funnier that some right-wingnuts actually think that this would still be a "secret" bunker after 8 years.
Posted by: Laughing | May 18, 2009 8:52 PM
It was undoubtedly stupid of Biden to reveal the location, if it was in fact what it was, but what is equally stupid is that the media reported where the location was. I'm not saying there should be censorship here, but what purpose does reporting on the location of the VP's safety bunker? All that does is possibly harm the country, and the reporting gives the people no benefit. How about thinking before writing something
Posted by: hmm | May 18, 2009 9:00 PM
A bunker under the NO is not new news people. Biden is fine. The left will continue the manufactured complaints about Joe "shooting his mouth off" because Joe is a strength for the inexperienced Obama. I would not feel safe having Obama as president without Biden as VP. Joe appears to be a truth teller. Obama sounds as though he skirts the issues and renegs on campaign promises. I don't trust any word that Cheney utters.
