The Swamp

by Mark Silva

The "town hall'' has taken hold as a favorite forum for political candidates and office-holders alike.

But the star attraction at a town hall meeting in New York on Wednesday is neither a candidate nor an office-holder.

She is an unwed mother.

Bristol Palin, daughter of the Alaska governor who ran for vice president and mother of a boy named Tripp, will take part in a national campaign to raise awareness for the prevention of teen pregnancy.

The 18-year-old has been named a Teen Ambassador for The Candie's Foundation, launched by Candie's "to educate America's youth about the devastating consequences of teenage pregnancy.'' (They sell the "Sexy Tee'' pictured here to raise money for the cause.)

"The Foundation fuels a celebrity-driven public service announcement campaign that dramatically exposes the devastating consequences of teenage pregnancy, while educating and challenging America's youth to make healthy decisions about sex,'' it says.

Explaining that she can serve as a living example of the consequences of teen pregnancy, she said in an issued statement that she will consider preventing even one girl from getting pregnant a success.

The Alaska governor had told Sen. John McCain's campaign about her daughter's pregnancy before the Arizona senator selected his running mate. Bristol Palin gave birth on Dec. 27 to Tripp. She and the boy's father, Levi Johnston, have separated. Johnston has gone on tour, too, talking about the failed relationship with Larry King and others on the talk-show circuit.

This must be a joke. What will Bristol talk about, all the mistakes she and her mother made in the process? Let's hope...

http://www.political-buzz.com/

Mark, your obsession with the Palins borders on bizarre and, quite frankly, rather sick. And rather than write something that comes across as rather dismissive, shouldn't this young woman get some praise and recognition for what she is doing and talking about? This young woman made a mistake and it seems to me she is doing things to make the best of that mistake and is acting rather adult in how she is handling the situation. And she is doing all of this knowing full well that the Sick, Demented Left, which includes the Sick, Demented Media, will constantly take pot shots at her, her mom and her baby.
So, Silva, grow up and get a freakin' clue!!

So is Bristol going to talk about birth control ? She better not let her mother find out.

The candies foundation approach to "abstinence only" as the answer leaves me wondering who is at the wheel of this train wreck. Just saying "If you have sex, you'll get pregnant" just doesn't cut it in the real world. I would have thought Bristol would know that by now.

I wonder how many people even heard of the Palin's before grandpa McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his VP running mate?? A move which resulted in him being smeared all over the map on November 4th, 2008. It was exciting and amusing to watch. And the GOP really believe she's a rising star. A clueless lot they are. I'll withhold my comments about this dysfunctional family and the hypocrisy and ignorance of Sarah Palin. It's still beyond me why folks, including the media (Fox Lies, Larry King, etc), still slobber all over themselves about them. I heard this girl couldn't even afford diapers for the baby.

Well here we go again.....

The loons will come blasting because the word Palin is in the story.

Never mind what the context..it's Palin !!!!

You jerks never get to the focus of the piece after all it's Palin so in your pea brains it's wrong !!!!

The Trib is starting to read like "The National Enquirer" You most likely won't allow this comment.

So, in my day. . ..showing my dinosaur scales, we called girls like the one in the wife-beater a ' tease ' ! This is the outfit Bristol's shilling for to help prevent teen pregnancy? If Tina Fey had written this it would get her a Grammy! This is sooooo Palin it's surreal. Very chic, fashionable, and there's just a tiny phrase in the whole Candie's site that mentions that most sexually active boys rarely use condoms.

So, my guess is that this is just another 'under the radar' site for pushing 'abstinence only' and selling hottie t-shirts for the fashion company moguls at Candie's corp.. Way to go Bristol. It's her Beyonce Moment. Her fifteen minutes of Larry King, et al! What's Levi thinking now?!

http://www.candiesfoundation.org/tshirts.html Get your wife-beater t with the slogan " I'm sexy enough . . .to keep you waiting." http://www.candiesfoundation.org/tshirts_2.html Don't forget to click on the link for MORE sexy t-s for girls. None for boys, thank you very much! Gotta love the one that says. . "be SEXY. . . it doesn't mean you have to have sex! " Really? Ya think?! I think these folks need to adjust their medications. Talk about cognitive dissonance!

Yeah, in these t-shirts they'll stop at heavy petting. Right! What's the salient message here?

John D: you obviously don't have a clue about what real journalism entails ... it should be UNBIASED ... the article above doesn't have a liberal or conservative slant ...

you, however, clearly (and judging from other posts under your name in the past) are nothing but a whining neo-con who doesn't like to hear anything contrary to what you believe.

keep watching your fox/faux "news" and you will be fine

Why, oh why, do I read the Palin stories? Why, indeed, do I always gape, at least momentarily, at car wrecks?

Here's the entirety of the message Bristol needs to get out there: use a rubber thingee. Better come up with some more material. Maybe Sarah can teach us how to field dress a moose using only your thumb and forefinger.

John D: A bit of a "leave Britney alone!!" feel to your post. Are you perhaps "projecting" when you accuse Mark of having an "obsession with the Palins"? The Palins don't care about you, JD -- they don't know you. They don't need you to protect them from Demented Journalists.

Shouldn't you have a teen ambassador that never been pregnant to lead the way?

This family is willing to do anything for attention, including using each other for attention.

What a joke. Do as I say, not as I do, or did. Don't kids hear that enought already from adults. Why do they need to hear it from her.

What would your opion be If candidate Obama was parading his family around as candidate Palin was; and one of his daugheters was pregnant. What a hypocrisy!

Well, I suppose who BETTER to talk about the problems of teen pregnancy than somebody who's been there and made the mistakes? She'd be eminently capable to talk about the "stigma of the unwed mother," the unreliability of counting on a teen father to act as father to the child, and how difficult it is to deal with trying to raise a baby at a time when she really should be concentrating on pulling her own life together. I say she should go for it. It'd be a far sight better than listening to somebody trying to pull off the lecture based purely on research.
.
And I get a kick out of John D. lecturing OTHER people about their obsessions and dementia. What a hoot he is!

Irony is indeed a wonderful thing.

Is this a joke?

Love the sexy anti sex tank tops. Makes the message nice and clear. Kind of like putting a diving board off of a cliff and writing "no jumping" on it.

How embarrassing for Bristol.

I wonder what sort of message this sends to her child.

Here's an idea for little Johnny D and the rest of the deadender wingnut anti-choice crowd...

USE A CONDOM !

Lovely, like mother like daughter. Another unqualified, undereducated GOPer preaching their ethos: "do as we SAY not as we do"!

So this unwed mother has been named a Teen Ambassador to educate America’s youth about the devastating consequences of teen pregnancy? How is an innocent baby a “devastating consequence”. A child does not ask to be born to the irresponsible youths that plague this country. Bristol Palin has no business disseminating to our youths the don’t do what I did speech. She knew what she was doing and she knew what the consequences could be. Now she makes it obvious her son is a “devastating consequence” in her young life by spewing the I love my son but should have waited garbage. Her carefree, fun-loving days of young adulthood are forever gone and her son will be a constant reminder of that.

My heart goes out to this child that will have to grow up in this household.

This is such a christian/ palin thing to do.....make your sins....say you are sorry.....tell everyone else they are doing wrong and that your ways are right....and oh yeah, pocket some money along the way.

John D, you prove again what a twitter you are. Do you realize that it was Bristol that took the money to be in the spotlight for this campaign? It was not a media conspiracy or anything else that you claim....it was just a pug taking money to be in the spotlight again.

Earth to John D--Bristol Palin is speaking at a PUBLIC FORUM and lending her voice to an issue.

She went on Larry King. She WANTS to be in the public light.

DUH.

I told ya....

The liberal left wingers would swarm out in force and pile on cause they say the word Palin !!!!!

Yet nothing is ever mentioned about obama and his relatives...cause that would be in poor taste huh?

No mention of Papa obama and favorite sport...hiding the salami in the U.S. and Kenya !!!

Don't believe me....ask obama's half brothers and sisters !!!

How about Papa obama's other favorite pass time ?....drink and drive...it's so much fun it'll be the death of ya !!!

But again that would be in bad taste.....

And it's not nearly as bad as the mistake that goof teenager Palin did !!!

Huh?

Hello pot meet kettle. You have to be kidding me. She is being rewarded for getting knocked up in high school. Give me a break. Not to mention that they named the kid after a drug reference.

Wonder if she'll have time for college.

Wonder if she'll have time to get her high school diploma?

As usual the illiterate, hateful, demented loony lefties show they haven't a clue and are completely incapable of understanding reading. Bristol is doing a good thing. Certainly in a public forum, there would be some press coverage. The problem, loons, is the surreal fascination you loons and the media have of the Palin family. Everything they do makes news or is newsworthy? Funny, I don't recall all this media coverage of Junior Gore and all of his drug and alcohol arrests, driving incident and criminal activity.
This article by Silva is not objective. First of all, is the pic of the sexy teen girl, who is NOT Bristol Palin. Yet, there are posts here from Lefty Loons who must think it is Bristol. Second, the first two sentences, which talk of town hall meetings usually consisting of politicians, but not this one! Third, for some reason, Mark Silva needs to bring up that Sarah is the mother of a boy named Tripp. Why? Why is Tripp even mentioned? In fact, since Tripp is a Down's Syndrome baby, what is the point to him being noted in this article about teen Bristol speaking about teen pregnancy? Is it to continue the lie in the loony left sites that Tripp is the son of Bristol? Finally, it's the tone of the item, especially the first few paragraphs.

I told ya....The liberal left wingers would swarm out in force and pile on cause they say the word Palin !!!!!

Teabagger Al,
What's wrong tough guy? Does the Palin family embarrass wingnutters like you now?

I think Bristol is a good negative role model for why you would want to avoid unwed teen pregnancy.

The real irony here is that smokin' tshirt being used to DISsuade teenagers from having irresponsible sex.

She should say, "This is where abstinence-only education will get you."

Al in Chicago......

Your a regular Nostradamus. That was quite a prediction that people would post. Thanks for telling us.

"I told ya....

The liberal left wingers would swarm out in force and pile on cause they say the word Palin !!!!!"

Identifying the hypocrisy that you apparently are content following is HARDLY a "left-wing" criticism -- it is an intelligent one.

Lemming is a word you may want to look up.

Bristol Palin was invited not because she knows anything about preventing pregnancy but because she is an example of the low-class, half-witted children typically born to women so stupid they need to take a class on how to prevent pregnancy.

When did the Tribune start reposting articles from The Onion?

Al- you are an idiot. It's an article about Palin, so why would anyone be talking about Obama?
Besides when there are articles out about him you and your Right Wing friends talk alot about him with no mention of Palin.

How hypocritical... I'm sorry, I know teen pregnancies happen, but if they've happened to you at least have the decency not to lecture others about the virtues of abstinence. Especially when you've already admitted that abstinence is "unrealistic"! Doesn't that admission sort of undercut Candies' abstinence-only message?

If Bristol wants to stop unplanned pregnancies she should handout pamphlets about condoms and the pill.

There's no evidence that any of the Palins are serious about anything other than furthering their own career ambitions and staying in the media spotlight for another 15 minutes . . . and another . . . and another . . .

After reading, and re-reading the article I fail to see any of the suggested left wing bias. I also believe that Bristol Palin could be an effective advocate for pregnancy prevention. However John D is right about one thing...enough already with the Palins! If we are going to fault the right wing for their obsession with Obama's bowing to foreign leaders, we need to stop obsessing about failed right wing vice presidential candidates.

This is a joke, this girl really needs something else to do, yeah she can cry to them about how bad it is? I really don't think this kid is taking care of her baby 24/7? I'm sure Mommy helps a lot, they need someone that doesn't get the help this one does, has to do it themselves-

Once again, I feel called upon to be the voice of reason.

The Right really needs to stop whinning about was obviously a poor VP choice - candidate, family and all.

As for the choice to have a teen mom to be a spokesperson for abstinency, I quite frankly have NO problem with it.

What I'd prefer, though, is that the teen mom take government officials to task for not being more creative and vigilant in getting child support from the fathers involved.

Most public aid ("welfare," if you will) is based on NEED. But if "unwed fathers" (there's a term you don't hear, like, EVER) would be forced to pony-up, it would diminish the need for public aid (although, sadly, not eliminate it).

It would also remind all would be Romeo's out there that the bun you just put in the oven is going to need new shoes and an education; and from here on out the government is going to make sure you own up to it.

If all of the "Randies" out there would stop and think before they seduced a young girl, we might start to make some headway into this issue.

As for Bristol, if all she's going to do is go on an anti-sex campaign, she may as well save her breath. The campaign needs to focus on the consequences to all of the YOUNG DUDES (Hey, Dudes) who want to "be a man," not just the young ladies of America.

Bristol is an excellent choice to talk to all teens across the world; she's been there and experienced the situation at hand. Teens only listen to teens, not adults. That's why there are programs with high schoolers talking to eighth graders. Most eighth graders today need to get their act together, study harder, graduate, and act more responsible in high school. There are a lot more "Bristol & Levi's" out there and we need to give them respect and support.

What exactly were her "devastating consequences"? She gets a job out of it and gets to travel the country. Yeah, that's real devastating. And when she speaks to people about pregancy prevention, what is she going to tell them? Is she going to go with the same tired abstinence speech that conservatives give, or is she going to wise up and tell people that condoms can prevent pregancy as well?

OMG I can't stop LOL!!!

Are you serious?

She got pregnant by not using protection, had sex very often with Levy, and now she is the poster child for abstinence?

Great. Maybe she'll contract herpes and be able to lecture us on how abstinence-only education helps you avoid that too.

I think it takes courage to come out and talk about her mistakes. To do so indicates maturity on her part. Millions of teenagers face temptation today (today's crop of tv shows doesn't help) and if by speaking out she can help one person from walking down the road she's traveled, then it's worth the effort. there's nothing wrong with abstinence, although it's difficult; condoms and birth control pills aren't 100% effective, but abstinence is.

Okay cynics pipe down and listen up - Bristol is not her mother. Bristol knows of the consequences of following her mother's dogma first hand and is getting the message out that abstinence only education does not work. It is sad that her mother can't figure it out but at least Bristol can - please stop assuming the Bristol is Sarah.

And for the person that says she needs something to do, she is a mother, one helluva job in itself. And she is taking on the job of saying to not get into the same situation.

And Tell the Truth, right on - guys need the education too, probably more so than the girls since their hormones in general are more out of control.

who cares

Bristol Palin is the perfect person to talk about abstinence; she is living the results of what can happen. The last time I checked America was supposed to be a free country and you ARE entitled to have a child out of wedlock. But you ARE NOT entitled to have some other sucker work his butt off to foot the bills for you and your love child. She needs to add that to her message.
Bristol Palin will be fine, she comes from a hard working supportive conservative family and she will not cost the taxpayer one red penny for that same reason. Not unlike the lazy, uneducated and irresponsible bums (better known as democrats) that pop out unwanted children, and think their entitled to free food, housing, medical care and some cash to boot. Having a child out of wedlock is not the problem, forcing someone else to feed them is. 100 welfare recipients = 100 democrats votes and that is undeniable.

Bristol is putting herself out to draw attention to the alarming incidence of teen pregnancy in the US and in reply to the problem she is promoting srxual abstinence.
Bristol is to be congratulated for her willingness to use her own set-back as an example to others.
Well-done Bristol.
