Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who stood at the center of the Bush administration's push for "enhanced'' interrogations of captured terrorists, warns that the U.S. must be prepared to lose more lives if it's unwilling to carry on the fight.
And, as for former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who has suggested that he might have resigned if he knew what was going on and hadn't sat through any "torture meetings'' per se, well, Cheney suggests the general is no Republican.
Cheney said today on CBS News' Face the Nation that he isn't sure that Powell -- who served as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff for the first President Bush when Cheney was secretary of defense -- is still a Republican. Powell endorsed President Barack Obama's candidacy, he noted -- "I assume that's some indication of his loyalty."
Powell -- who says "the Republican Party is in deep trouble'' for following the lead of people such as radio's Rush Limbaugh -- says the party should reclaim the center.
Cheney said today, "if I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd go with Rush Limbaugh."
As for the enchanced iinterrogation techniques that the Obama administration has banned -- with Attorney General Eric Holder specifically calling waterboarding "torture'' -- Cheney maintains that they kept America safe.

Yet another example of the free-speech, tolerant, new tone that Obama supporters are known for.

One draft-dodger supporting another draft-dodger, over an American war hero and a good American !! How is that for " Republican " nonsense !!? What's next, another Bush in the White House !!? Ah, those " Republicans " are such kidders !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

The sound you hear is Cheney pounding the last nail into the coffin of the Republican Party.

I really think that Cheney has lost it! After WW11 we, the U.S. signed two treaties; The Geneva Conventions treaty, and the International Treaty Againt Torture. Both became internation law. What Cheney is basically saying is that it's OK to break the law when it becomes an inconvenience . Sort of like "do as I say, not as I do!"
I'm sorry that Dick finds it so inconvenient to follow/respect the law.
And for him to claim that his law breaking, rogue like approach has made us safer is bizzare. Show me viable, imperical proof that waterboarding has worked. Not just "it worked because I said it worked" and I will advocate for its use. Untill then it's just another WMD!

We hear more from Cheney now than when he was VP. I believe Powell when he said he knew nothing about torture. The republicans needed him to sell their agenda. The republicans played him like a cheap guitar. It's no wonder he has no loyalty to the GOP

Keep up the charm DICK. People are so drawn to your way of thinking.

Yes the Republican Party can change its image. Any old snake can shed its skin and come out looking like a new snake. The truth of the matter is that it is still the same old snake.

Once again...Cheney is correct! If Powell wants the GOP to "move to the center"...then why didn't he support McCain?? If he actively supported Obama...then he is a radical, left-wing neomarxist that has been duped by a teleprompter!!!
NOBAMA! NO SOCIALISM!!

I say let him keep talking! The more we allow that the more the American people will see how far right and crazy these people really are!! Ya sure these criminal tactics mayhave kept America safer but it certainly did not make America richer like himself and his other war profiting friends! Kep it up Dick, we love to hate you!

Criminal? What crimes did he commit? Or are you just becoming a member of Obama's totalitarian state where you believe all of your political enemies should be put in prison?

As aGHW Bush (41) worshipper, huge Colin Powell advocate, and 3x Operation Iraqi Freedom vet; I applaud the comments of one 5x draft dodger complimenting another draft evader (anal pollop) and admitted drug user's advocacy of purging a decorated war hero, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Secretary of State from the party. I love the deathspiral of my former party of Eisenhower and Bush (41) (also WWII war heros. Ring the bell the "Points of Light" and "fiscal conservative/social moderate party is dead. Thanks Lincoln rolls in his grave.

IMO the best momment was Cheney's comment that he wasn't sure (or even if it was needed) for Bush's approval of EIT's. Cheney should be tried for treason.

Hmmmm, we keep hearing from the Loony Lefters that Cheney and Limbaugh are draft dodgers. Please explain how they dodged the draft? I know in Limbaugh's case, he received a medical deferment, a legitimate medical deferment. Cheney didn't "dodge" the draft either. Speaking of draft dodgers, though, shall we discuss all the Dems and Loony Lefters who did dodge the draft?
In regard to "torture," shall we arrest Pelooni and Rockefeller too, since they knew of the enhanced interrogations, all the way back in 2002? Should we arrest Pelooni for continually changing her story and lying about what she knew and when?

Same reasoning, John D, that you guys always called Clinton a draft dodger. It seems, using your deferments is, "by definition" dodging. Of course, Cheney and Limbaugh also qualify as chickenhawks.

From Wikipedia:
When Cheney became eligible for the draft, during the Vietnam War, he was a supporter of the U.S. involvement in the war but did not serve in the military. Instead, he applied for and received five draft deferments. In 1989, Washington Post writer George C. Wilson interviewed Cheney as the next Secretary of Defense; when asked about his deferments, Cheney reportedly said, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."
That, folks, is a Grade-A draft-dodger.

Rush over Colin any day! I believe Rush has stood by his principles since day one; the other has not.
Posted by: Candygram | May 10, 2009 9:45 PM
Rush is a great national hero. War hero, public servant, scholar. Every time his nation called, Rush stood up to serve. He never thought about himself, only the country. His years of military service speak for themselves. His years serving this nation as a public servant speak for themselves. He has passed up every chance to enrich himself for the good of this country. He's put his life on the line for the good of this country. Who is Colin Powell in comparison to this singular, selfless national hero?

Dick, there's no power vacuum to fill any more.
It's over.
Your security clearance is cancelled.
Better concentrate on shredding records before Obama changes his mind and endorses a Truth Commission with a really broad commission.
Or, perhaps you and Joe Biden could go on something like Q & A and air your differences.
You'll never rehabilitate your record.
Plus, you won't be able to ruffle Obama or distract him very much from his "To Do" list.
Responding to you is not on that list.
What is more, your persona is so offputting.
Wait. Wait. Maybe I was too hasty.
Maybe you should keep on trying to defend the indefensible, to re-write history in the face of overwhelming evidence.....
You are like Laurence Olivier in character as Dr. Szell in that film.
The resemblance is uncanny....
Maybe you SHOULD keep on keeping on.

I wonder how many citizens feel that Dick Chaney is a most despicable person. I do. Anyone who would fault Colin Powell in the manner that Chaney has, is a genuine foul ball. I hope that Powell ignores Chaney.

Smarmy chickenhawk Cheney is about as unpatriotic and cowardly as they come. We all know 9/11 happened on his watch and that the Bush administration ignored classified intelligence from England and Israel. After the worst attacks against the U.S. since Pearl Harbor, the draft dodging Cheney was hurried off to a secret undisclosed location where he remained in hiding for months. Cheney received 5 deferrments to avoid combat in VietNam. Cheney also has 2 drunk driving convictions. The foul reeking Limp-baugh received a deferrment because his hemorrhoids. Neither of these cowards have sacrificed a single thing for the United States. Colin Powell served in VietNam and is a decorated veteran.

It defies logic that so many malcontents have hitched their wagon to this has-been. Even Bush was smart enough to sever his ties and distance himself from Cheney. Too bad other GOP members haven't been as wise.

Dick was a good choice when his mother named him.
He should be made accountable for the lack of consideration to fellow Americans. He has and always will have his own agenda. How come we have seen more of him in the last few weeks than his 8 years as vice president?.

All Mr. Cheney said was that he thought Mr. Powell had already left the party when he backed, campaigned for and voted for Pres. Obama. Seems a logical assumption. I appreciate Mr. Powells service to our country but I have never trusted him in his political actions. A "right of center" conservative would never have done that. The brainless attacks against Mr. Cheney just confirms how liberals behave when someone says something they disagree with. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. I will ,however, fight to the death for your right to be stupid.
