Could there be another Kennedy in the Senate?
It's a big name, Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley notes.
A spokeswoman for Chris Kennedy, president of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, says the son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy is seriously considering a campaign for the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama -- now held by Sen. Roland Burris.
The Associated Press quotes Kennedy spokeswoman Kasey Madden today as saying it's uncertain when Kennedy would make an announcement.
The seat is held by Burris, a Democrat and appointee of ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich. It's up for election in 2010.
Chris Kennedy's father was a senator when assassinated in 1968, during his campaign for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. He is a nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy and the ailing Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts. His cousin, Caroline Kennedy, sought an appointment to New York's then-open Senate seat, only to withdraw her candidacy, earlier this year.
Christopher George Kennedy, a native of Boston, is president of Merchandise Mart Properties. His grandfather, Joseph Kennedy, purchased the Mart in 1945.
Chicago's mayor was asked about the possibility today at a West Side job-training facility. "A lot of people would like to run for the U.S. Senate, it's a seat held by President Barack Obama,'' Mayor Daley said. "It's history alone for anybody to enter into that seat.'
"And you have Burris, of course, our sitting senator, a lot of good candidates," Daley said in good party fashion, mentioning other possible candidates as well -- State treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and State Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan as possible candidates.
Asked if the Kennedy name alone still holds a certain amount of allure for the voting public, the mayor said, yes. "You better believe it, yes it does,'' Daley said. "Same thing with Barack Obama's name. Those two names, you better believe it.''

Oh please run! The faster we can get Tombstone out the better, can you imagine the debate? Hopefully Burris will have enough sense to throw in the towel, but I doubt it!

How did that Caroline Kennedy thing work out?

Great, a Kennedy. Now that's "change" that the lemmings will vote for.

Please stay away! Not another entitled Kennedy throwing their liberal agenda at the masses and us commoners. ENOUGH of these socialists already...

Just what we need - another 'name', with no track record, running for office in Illinois. He's the North Shore version of Todd Stroger.

Good grief, pulling out another Kennedy. Frankly, I'm about sick and tired of all of them, but knowing this State, he will be the next Senator. Has he paid all his taxes?

I hope for our sake that we can get decent people to run. The only two people who in my mind have been decent are Gov. Jim Edgar and Senator Peter Fitzgerald. Both were honorable people. I can't think of anybody else in our state that even come close to matching these two.
We don't need a Madigan, or a G... whatever with the Greek last name or a Kennedy. We don't need people like them, and like Daley and Stroger who think they are entitled. It is time to clean house and take a chance on some real reformers because with the names out there so far, it is just more of the same.

Oh jeez, just what we need. Please tell me this is just a bad joke.

What a family legacy. Bootlegger with the mob, (grandpa) Ladies man (president), and a killer (poor ailing uncle). I sure would want my name out there if I belonged to that family. Although the previous poster is right. The bots will vote regardless if he knows or does anything. Just look at their past voting records with Stroger, Daley, Obama, etc.

And aside from his family name he is qualified because...?

Please Mr. Kennedy run for the seat; we need another intelligent and capable elected official from the great state of Illinois. It has been totally embarrassing to see the cauldron of fools who hold Illinois public office. Obama, Durbin, and even some of the more intelligent moderate republicans are a rare breed in this state were blood tie cronyism and idiot elected officials are too bountiful.

It's just another Kennedy looking to get a government pension.
Y'know. I'm really starting to like Quinn - how in the heck did Illinois manage to get someone who actually cares for us?
Posted by: Skeptic | May 20, 2009 5:20 PM
The word's out folks...Illinois is THE home of the socialist party. Just make sure you don't REALLY work for a living. It would instantly disqualify you from holding a public office.

No! No! No Kennedy. Besides being a Kennedy he's ugly too. Someone else has already posted about JFK, Ted, the Old Man - that should be enough.
Posted by: rebecca | May 20, 2009 5:49 PM
I am sure this is the one Kennedy with no skeletons.
Excuse me, we're talking about President Obama's former Senate seat. We HAVE TO elect another black man, just like the Gov. HAD to appoint a black man the fill the seat.
It's another entitlement.

Normally, I would vote for a Kennedy, in a heartbeat, but we have an excellent Junior Senator, in Senator Burris. Not only will I go out and work for him, health permitting, I will support him with contributions and my vote !! He has proven, again and again, in Illinois politics, he is dependable, fair-minded and independent !! We couldn't have a better, team, than Senators Durbin and Burris. Let's keep it that way !! Senator Burris deserves a full term and I hope, real Democrats, fair-minded Independents and real Republicans will agree with me and vote for Senator Burris !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Let us add an eight sin to the Cardinal Sins - American Royal Elite Nepotism. Another Liberal 'One World' Socialist Kennedy. Look what is happening to California, too much money endlessly being spent on foolish social issues. Our Nation is on the edge, why push it off with one more of John Kass's Hopium addicts. We need fresh ideas and real world educated people to offer genuine leadership, not Carvillian teleprompter readers.

Come on folks, you don't want a career politician, you don't want someone without experience in government. Make up your minds. This is a businessman with a successful business. I don't care who his family is or isn't - look at the facts first.

We founded this nation to get away from monarchy.
Kennedy, Bush, Kennedy, Bush, Bush, Clinton, Kennedy, Clinton.
No more!

Kennedy's a much better choice than Burris!
Posted by: Gidget | May 20, 2009 6:34 PM
Pathetic! Did he consult with Ted "left Mary Jo to die" Kennedy.
These people seek to have the public fund their salaries and give them power.
Find another candidate, sick and tired of Kennedys.
Corruption!

What happened? Did we run out of Daley relatives or cronies?
Posted by: Steelpedler | May 20, 2009 6:50 PM
Alexi should be the next senator. he is the most 'normal' person in Illinois politics in a long time. I will support him, and I'm a republican.

Seems some of you have an issue with the Kennedy legacy but I would bet you voted for the Bush's...check out their legacy..Grandpa Bush, Prescott that is, worked for the Nazi’s. This is a fact. And for everyone all the common folk that are against the Democrats...you really have been snowed over by the GOP. Keep voting for them and helping them make the companies they run and their friends richer and richer...Sad how many of you believe the blow hearts....Do your own research, do not believe everything you read and hear. American's please fight for your rights. President Obama is the best thing to happen to this country in the past 30 years.

Good lord, why not name a canned ham "Kennedy" put a "D" next to the name and it would probably get all the sheeple votes.
I just love living in Illinois (not).
Posted by: DebT | May 20, 2009 7:14 PM
Two words "oligarchy government".
Pathetic
Posted by: DebT | May 20, 2009 7:17 PM
I can understand why republican readers would be weary of a legacy candidate (theirs didn't work out so well), but the Kennedys have contributed a lot more of significance than the Bush's --- plus it wouldn't hurt to have another candidate, who like Barrack has success written all over him, come out of Illinois.

Downstate we will not be voting anyone who is not black!
Posted by: Uncle Tom | May 20, 2009 7:33 PM
Let's hope he's paid all of his taxes, otherwise he may actually be the next senator.

Although political dynasties are a major threat to clean government and to democracy itself--especially her in the Land of Stinkin'--I will not hold the man's family against him. What I do hold against him is the fact that he has so little relevant experience and that he is in the thrall of extreme leftist ideology (surprise, surprise).

Another kennedy is just another pain in the ass. Can't we get real representational government?
Posted by: truspeek | May 20, 2009 8:59 PM
Oh how wonderful! another Kennedy and we sure don't need another Democrat, I'm neither Dem or Rep, I vote for someone's record, and what they have accomplished, the only thing that any of the Illinois Democrats have done is tax us, tax us, tax us, now Obama is screwing up the credit cards, I read an article that he wants the credit card companies to start charging interest the day the purchase is posted on the card. I pay my bill off monthly. He wants to punish the hard working people, the ones that pay their bills. We are being rewarded by the companies because we are responsible for paying. He just wants us to pay for the irresponsible people in this world. He can go also. I will not vote Democratic ever again.

Nothing like a little hubris.
Even Obama toiled in remote Springfield for 8 years before running for Senate.
Don't you think a Senator should have held at least one, teensy, eensy little elected office prior to the Senate???
Posted by: ornery | May 20, 2009 9:46 PM
Just what the country needs another Kennedy. Stop already they should take all their money and bleeding hearts and buy an island in the South Pacific. Everyone talks about the Kennedy curse!. i've got news for you old man Kennedy was in bed with the mob and what ever has gone on in the Kennedy family is pay back.
Posted by: Paul | May 20, 2009 11:21 PM
