'Rush' on Sotomayor: 'I want her to fail': The Swamp

Limbaugh's own standing in the opinion polls, however, isn't too successful.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Rush Limbaugh doesn't only want President Barack Obama to fail.

He also wants the president's first nominee to the Supreme Court to fail.

"Do I want her to fail? Yeah.' '' Limbaugh said of federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor on his radio show today. "Do I want her to fail to get on the court? Yes! She'd be a disaster on the court.

And for those who have suggested that Limbaugh never really meant what he said about the president, Limbaugh said this today: "Do I still want Obama to fail as president? Yeah.

"AP, you getting this?'' Limbaugh asked on-air. "He's gonna fail anyway, but the sooner the better, so as little damage can be done to the country.''

Then again, radio's Rush may be out there on a limb today. For all the 12 million listeners that the man with the "golden mic'' has on daytime radio, the results of a survey by CNN and Opinion Research Corp. show that most people dont think much of him:

Only 30 percent of those surveyed voiced a favorable opinion of Limbaugh -- even lower than Dick Cheney's 37 percent in that survey -- and 53 percent said they have an unfavorable opinion of Limbaugh in the May 14-17 survey of 1,010 adults.

Colin Powell, the former secretary of state and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under two Bush presidencies who endorsed Obama for the White House and has been a arget of Limbaugh's and Cheney's criticism lately, comes out a lot stronger in this survey: With a 70 percent favorable rating. The margin of error is 3 points.

I guess Rushbo is back on the hillbilly heroin again. Come on wingnuts, is this all you've got?

What better endorsement could one hope for? Now if O'Reilly, Beck, Hannity, Crazy Dick and the other wing nuts pile on, it will guarantee her ratification and her success.

hahaha .... what a perfect "Leader" for the Republican party .... the party of losers

Rush wouldn't even get accepted to law school. He hasn't read any of her opinions; but he has his stupid opinion anyway. The more he yaps, the better it is for Sotomayor.

The Dems want to thank you Rush and Dick. Keep talkin' through the mid-term elections, please!

Keep all that constructive talk and those suggestions comin' fellas.

This will make the little Wingnuts (Rush) heads explode - a woman who is also a "scary brown person".

Oh NOes!!!!!

So, the drug-addled racist Rush Limbaugh called the choice racist, as in reverse racist.....big surprise.
The less support this buffoon gives her the better. As far as I'm concerned she has a compelling history and will be a productive and outspoken judicial voice for social justice. Even better, she'll be easily confirmed.

Janet- funny... race baiting, condescending liberal logic allowing you to value a person primarily on their skin color in the name of inclusiveness... but funny.

The problem with Sotomayer is that she is not just a [ your words ] scary brown person, but a brown person who believes that her color and personal experiences makes her a better judge than a "scary" white male ... people that think like you have made this type of qualifier seem llike the norm- and acceptable...seems that you are the one scared of "brown" people.

The only reason I can think of to repeat what Rush thinks is 1) entertainment, as in "is this guy an idiot or what?" 2) to boost the democrats because he gives repubs a bad name or 3) to advocate for Limbaugh. He thrives on the media repeating what he says (and it's probably the only reason he's still on the air). Otherwise, Rush and his ilk add little value to any conversation.

Hey Mark, since you like polls so much, here is one for you. According to the Gallup Poll, the public's favorability rating of the media is 28 percent, which is less than that of Limbaugh, Cheney, Palin, Bush, et al.
Mark, how are the numbers looking for the Tribune? NY Times? Washington Post? LA Times? MSNBC's ratings? CNN's ratings? All of these outlets have much in common: they're either losing money, losing readership, losing viewership, or in most cases all of the above.

PrePuke,
Really? I keep looking for this statement that you claim Sotomayor made: "better than a scary white male"...and yet I can't find it anywhere.

Maybe if you quit making stuff up you would actually be able to back up comments like that with FACTS, but then you wouldn't be a knuckle-dragging member of the right-wing lunatic fringe if you could do that.

Try again....

John the more you open that hole in your face the more we realize how much of an idiot you really are! Everyone knows that the internet has made a huge inpact on the media and thier outlets but what exactly does that have to do with this article? Trying to deflect the issue into something else is so typical of you. We are so over it already ok! Either stick to the point at hand or shut up!

What I fine interesting is that Rush has been on the national airwaves for over 20 years, and it is just the past few months that the MSM absically reports on his show on a daily basis. Why the sudden interest?

Could it be "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it"?

Really? How strange-you looked up MY quote and didn't find it attributed to Sotomayer.. imagine that!

If you had any ability to comprehend the written word you would understand that the word "scary" was added by me intentionally ( hence the quotes)...the phrase was meant to contrast Janet's "scary" brown people quote.

Scot- actually John D makes a valid point- the article is picking and choosing who to compare Rush to as far as polling favorables or unfavorables... the net result of this is that Silva gets an opportunity to say that Rush is not as popular as the people he is criticizing- which is almost always not true..but is true with Powell.

Comparing Rush's popularity to Colin Powell's really is a credibility stretch. Powell is not the public figure that Pelosi or Reid are now- Rush has been very critical of them- why not compare their polling numbers?

Do you hear that Republicans? The Grand Poohbah of your Party has spoken. All Republicans must commit to fighting the Sotomayor nomination or risk the wrath of Rush. You will be expelled from the Party like Colin Powell has if you dare disagree with the Grand Poohbah! Discussion and dissent will not be tolerated. Show your loyalty to the Grand Poohbah Rush Limbaugh. You have your marching orders, Attack Sotomayor. Let it be written. Let it be done!

You would have thought that after having been taken to school by Obama on the Stimulus Package, Limpbaugh would have the good sense to avoid having his nose bloodied again by taking on Obama's nominee who will inevitably be confirmed and likely by a significant margin. But no, the bloated Rush and his fat ego won't let him turn from this fight, no matter what it ultimately does to him and indirectly his Republican party. This guy is rapidly becoming my favorite Republican for what he's doing FOR the Democratic Party

Yes, Mr. Blakely, heartburn got my point, which is not surprising. Conservatives are smart, liberals are dumber than roadkill.
Silva always points out Limbaugh's favorability numbers from some poll to disparage him. My point is that the mainstream media has lower approval numbers than even Limbaugh. And most mainstream media outlets are hurting, and granted for a variety of reasons: bad economy is hurting ad revenue, internet, etc. But there is one other fact hurting the media: more and more folks don't trust it. If "news" outlets like the Tribune, NY Times, NBC, et al lose credibility, then they are in trouble. And they are in trouble. Fact.

As far as Limbaugh's comment that he hopes Sotomayor fails, well being a conservative, he would rather see a conservative on the Court.
You lefties, and Mr. Silva himself, cannot tell me that you folks wanted to see John Roberts or Samuel Alito on the Court? Didn't Obama vote against both and even vote for a filibuster against Alito? Alito and Roberts are mainstrream conservatives, not far right. Sotomayor seems to be a mainstream liberal, but the jury is still out yet on that.

Did anyone find the irony of johnny d's bashing of the corporate media (and telling us how unpopular it is) while using this outlet? I'm sure he didn't. Just like he would not understand how polls work. Do you homeowrk you twitter.....I find an average of about 60% favorability rating for the "media" in 2005 you nutjob. http://www.journalism.org/node/683 Have you been talking to brucy lately?

Little Johnny Diaper,
Why is it that everytime you don't like a story Mark reports on, you attack Mark rather than making an effort to refute the story like the rest of us do?

I know it's hard (your head that is) but you need to stop letting Mullah Limbaugh do all of your thinking for you, chucklehead.

"[John D.] Why is it that everytime you don't like a story Mark reports on, you attack Mark...John E."

Amazing. Wingnut "John E." actually pretends to believe that Mark Silva "reports". "I don't talk to Republicans" Silva is no more, or less, a reporter than Robert Fibbs, James Carville or Rush Limbaugh.

Little boy-

Did you just take your ball and go home?

Heartburn,

Remember, the definition of a racist is a conservative that has just beaten a liberal in a debate. Congrats on the victory!!!

Posted by: Terry | May 27, 2009 11:12 AM

Terry- it will be interesting to see how many other "racists" like myself will be uncovered in the upcoming vetting of Sotomayor...Obama's supporters really should be more disappointed in his ugly politicizing of her gender and nationality this way...

As to winning the argument-appreciate the sentiment - but I am not sure if there is ever an argument with John E, Antacid or whichever character shows up... interactions with him are similar to trying to talk to the monkeys in the zoo and then ducking from whatever gets thrown at you in return...

Terry, so are you saying that there is no racism in this country? Are you saying that it's all really made up to victimize conservatives? Do you really believe that? Your post seems to say that you think mthat any chartge o racsism is illegitimate, and that it proves that person being accused is actually correct. I'm hoping that you really don't mean that.

Remember, the definition of a racist is a conservative that has just beaten a liberal in a debate. Congrats on the victory!!!

Posted by: Terry | May 27, 2009 11:12 AM

Let's see, Rush called Sotomayor a racist, so does that mean that she's a conservative that won a debate?

Mary,

Absolutely not. Look at the debate above between Heartburn and Antacid & Janet, Antacid and janet jump on the race issue, while Heartburn is trying to defuse. It's losers like Antacid and Janet that scream racism w/o making any other point that lose debates.

CLOUless,

I disagree with how Rush tried to make his point, but Sotomayor's quote of "“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life". Had she said "different", fine. But what makes the latina woman's experiences more qualified than that of a white male? Why do those experiences give the latina woman the ability to come to a better conclusion than the experiences of a white male? That was a racist statement.

Terry, I'll give you a clue "wise" is the key word in Sotomayor's statement, not latina, woman, white or male. She's praising the wisdom that experiences can bring. A wise person with rich life experiences will generally make better judicial decisions than just any old person without the wisdom or the experience. You and the Great Rush Limbaugh are the ones seeing racism where there is none. You guys should really try to get over that victim mentality.

CLOUless,

I didn't realize you were on the morning distribution of the White House talking points. Nice spin.

Why don't you try to spin that "seeing racism where there is none" line to the New Haven fire fighters.

Ha ha ha!

Only a deadender like Terri would think that his pal (heartburn), who just got called out for blatantly being a racist, actually won the "argument".

I'm sure the Republican party leadership will use the Sotomayor nomination to raise a boatload of cash. Their direct mailers will scare the money right out of the wallets of right-wing minions like Terry.

I love watching the Republican party and their "leadership" wringing their hands over why they aren't in the majority while once again alienating the Latino vote by attacking a Latina who is eminently qualified for this position.

Everytime a right-winger like Terry feigns outrage, I smile a little more. It's amusing how Wingnuts are only outraged when it isn't something that benefits them.

The more vehemently Wingnuts like Terry attack her the more likely they will only get 20% of the vote while losing Arizona and possibly Texas in the 2012 election. Pretty soon all the GOP will have left is Alabama and Mississippi - yeehaw!

Tiime to take Perpetual Victim Terry to school again.

Terry, are you aware that Sotomayor did not make the New Haven decision alone? It was the ruling of a three judge panel she was a part of. You know what else Terry? The other two judges were white. Are they anti-white racists too?Secondly, have you read the ruling? (Even you should be able too. It's very short. Maybe you should call Rush and have him read it to you.) The court ruled that while the outcome was unfair to the plaintiffs, under Federal Law they did not have a viable claim ,and that the decision of the promotion board was protected by Federal civil rights law because they were acting as Federal Civil rrights law required them to. For Sotomayor and the other two judges to rule otherwise, they would have been,...now sit down Terry, I'm going to say some scary, scary words...legislating from the bench! Gasp! We couldn't have that, could we?

I love it! Thank you everyone for making my day! Hey Terry how ya doin?

Wow for the first time ever Terry has kept his mouth shut! I dont believe it!
