Now the sale begins.
President Barack Obama, who nominated federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court today, is calling on that email community that he amassed in his campaign for the White House to support his first candidate for the court in the hearings ahead.
In an email this evening, the preisdent delivers a video address about the appointment of the first Hispanic justice to the nation's highest court.
"This decision affects us all -- and so it must involve us all,'' says the president, enlisting his allies for the Senate confirmation process ahead.
It's the same appeal that he made today from the East Room of the White House, calling Sotomayor "the right choice.'' The longtime federal jurist has the ability "to hone in on the key issues,'' the president says. A long day for the speechwriters, perhaps.

Besides Republicans, another group that can't feel empathy - serial killers.

We're going to hear a lot of coded language from the GOP: "Empathy" being the most recent one, which is a blatant cipher for "woman" or, more precisely, "know-nothing woman in a position of power" The assumption here is that men are the only capable justices, because they lack emotions, feelings, and empathy and therefore would issue the kinds of cold, rational interpretations of the law you might expect from a Justicebot 5000. Women, by this logic, would always rule in favor of the side that would make the best Lifetime movie.
This reasoning is why Republicans constantly wonder why they do so poorly with women every election.
Then there's going to be 'temperament.' This is similar, except instead of 'woman' it means "Hispanic," with the reasoning being that, since their homeland is full of jungles, sunshine, and chile peppers, all Latin Americans have the kind of fire in the blood that characterized Desi Arnaz's character on I Love Lucy. A Hispanic judge would ignore the law in favor of physical fights and screaming matches, and often be blinded with rage when they took a personal interest in a case and decide thusly.
This reasoning is why Republicans constantly wonder why they do so poorly with Hispanics in every election.
Finally, there's going to be 'unqualified." This means "minority" and assumes that any minority who would receive a job offer when there were capable white men interested in the position got it exclusively because the employer was more interested in diversity than in selecting for quality, and as every member of the GOP knows, the most qualified candidates are always white men.
This reasoning is why Republicans constantly wonder why they do so poorly with minorities in every election.

I think Obama should go as liberal as he feels comfortable with the next eight years with all of his picks. Republicans will throw the exact same tantrums and broadcast the exact same lies. It doesn't matter to them who Obama nominates, so he might as well choose whom he likes.
Republicans are in a box with Hispanics. The 2000 flirtation Hispanics had with the Republicans went seriously wrong by 2008, and this pick will go a long way toward making Hispanics as Democratic as Jews, if not African-Americans.
Say goodbye to Arizona and also Texas within a few more years, Republicans, hispanics will be in the majority there too before long, and your biggest state will be lost to you.

If she plays her cards right at the hearings, Sonia will come out as America' sweetheart.
I would suggest a little help from Oprah, however.
Not an appearance on the Show.
A visit from Oprah's hair, makeup and wardrobe departments to tweak Sonia a little, glam her up a bit.
O, what the hay--why not go on Oprah, but only to discuss her childhood, mother, and early career.
Nothing about pending cases or issues likely to come up in the Court, of course.
Oprah's 40 million viewers aren't too interested in that, but they are probably very interested in how she "manages to do it all".
She will come out of it all as popular as Bo.

She is a good pick. She may not be the best but for what needs to be done shes is what we need.

She has a very inspirational story. Maybe a little left for my taste but I commend her nonetheless.
