House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken a fall in public opinion, according to a new CNN Opinion Research Corp. poll showing that nearly half of all Americans surveyed do not approve of the way the California Democrat is handling her job as speaker of the House.
The newest results come from a survey taken after the speaker accused the CIA of misleading her about the interrogation tactics that were being used on suspected terrorists several years ago. The CIA maintains that it briefed Pelosi on water-boarding and other tactics in September 2002, but the speaker maintains she was not told waterboarding was being used then. House Republican Leader John Boehner, siding with the CIA on the credibility question, accuses Pelosi of changing stories.
Republicans have attempted to turn the "torture'' debate against Pelosi, maintaining that Democratic leaders were well aware of the "enhanced interrogation techniques'' of the Bush administration that they are now criticizing. But Pelosi's standing with the public has suffered a long slide since January, before all this talk emerged.
In the May 14-17 survey, just 39 percent said they approve of the job that Pelosi is performing as speaker and 48 percent said they disapprove. Only 12 percent voiced no view. In January, 51 percent had said they approved of the speaker's performance and just 22 percent voiced disapproval.
A few other events also have played out - including Pelosi's promise to get health care reform on to the House floor by July, Pelosi's support for the president's $3.55-trillion federal budget and more and Pelosi's push for the president's $787-billion economic stimulus over the objection of every Republican in the House -- since January.
But the shift in public opinion has been most pronounced since March. Then, in a March 9-11 survey, 46 percent of those surveyed said they approved of the job the speaker was performing and 30 percent disapproved.
Twice as many, at that point, voiced no opinion: 25 percent .
That's a 7 percent loss in approval and 18 percent gain in disapproval in two months -- much of it, apparently, coming from people who hadn't formed an opinion two months before -- and a 12 percent slide in approval and more than doubling of disapproval since January.
The president's job approval has remained fairly steady, 64 percent in early March in these polls, and 62 percent in the latest CNN Opinion Research survey, during the past two months. The poll of 1,010 adults in the May 14-17 survey carries a possible 3 percentage point margin of error
Just two months ago, one in four people held no view about the speaker's performance in these surveys. Two months is a long time between polls, these days. It's unclear, here, when people started taking a closer look at the speaker. But a lot has happened in two months, and it has not been good for Pelosi's public standing.

After watching that Oscar performance during her last news conference she should have a role in remake of One Flew Over the Kook koo Nest. Can anyone actually believe in her creditability anymore. Wait, let me check my notes to make sure I got my story straight! Why not just release the briefing minutes so the truth comes out before the CIA leaks them and Nancy is toast. The Dems. are imploding once again on the issue of national security and are appearing daily like squabbling children in the sandbox and the folks know it. Gosh, even the media is asking a Dem. some tough questions for a change, now that is an improvement. Funny how a hypocritical Democract puritanism on EIT has back-fired and Cheney appears as the strong and decisive winner in the whole debate.

This isn't the first time she's been caught backing US foreign policy and then tried to tell her constituents that she didn't. The first time was with secret wiretaps of international calls to terrorists. She knew from the start and she never questioned it.
And now she's been caught with her hand in the cookie jar once again on the interrogation of what are effectively mercinaries.
I think it's past time for certain politicians to acknowledge that US rules apply to Americans only and not to foreigners. Y'know, the way our country is designed to be.

The reason she is sliding in the polls is that she is pushing her agenda and not the agenda of the the people she was elected to represent. She is a socialists who believes her casue is just even when no one else does.

Remember , who was it, Richard Bissell?
Or one of the Founding Spooks at CIA?
Who used to talk about playing the "Mighty Wurlitzer" to "shape" public opinion, way back when?
Do you really think they dismantled the Mighty Wurlitzer?
Nan Nan is finding out the Might Wurlitzer is, ah, not playing her song right now.
In a roundabout way, perhaps this little episode is another example of the need for a Truth Commission, so we might be able to know who approved what, what they knew, and when.

Time for the bumbling politician to go. She is an absolute disgrace to the position she holds and does not represent America. Who does she support terrorist or us, Americans? She can go work for Green Peace who has harsher techniques than waterboarding.

I'm a Democrat, but Nancy Pelosi proves that there are poor public servants on both sides of the aisle. She's a weak Speaker of the House and seems like the standard issue duck and cover politicians. I will disagree with Bubba above that says Cheney appears as the strong and decisive winner in the whole debate. WHAT? I guess you're one of those people who gets their news off FOX News, aren't you?

While I agree Pelosi certainly has her hands full explaining herself, don't think for one minute that it makes Cheney look "strong and decisive". By all means this does not change most Americans minds on torture and now with the question of torture to make a link between Al Qaeda and Iraq, I wouldn't be pumping up your chest just yet.

I think the most surprising thing is that 38% of the people think she is doing a good job. If the Dems want to keep power, they need to get rid of this person. She is the Tom DeLay of the Democrats and will bring this party down.
Posted by: dan | May 19, 2009 9:54 AM
Typical politician that cannot get her story right and does a cover up on what actually happens. Politicians always get in trouble when they are involved in a cover ups. Just look at Nixon and Clinton who were involved in big cover up. Pelosi is either lying or is the most incompetent Speaker of the House in recent memory.

Why wouldn't it, with the pounding she is taking from the " Republicans ". Speaker Pelosi is not like the hypocrites Getrich, Hamstert or Chump Cheney !! Those pillars of the " Republican " Party, who had the Intelligence community lie to our nation, about WMD and other things. What a joke !! She has my vote and I hope she serves, as Speaker for another 10 years ! She makes those " Republican " chumps look like chimps !!

Just because the state run media fawned over these dems, pre-election.
They thought the gravy train would never end. Now some actual accountability has started to creep back in.
The comedy shows are going to be kept very busy with these clowns in office.
Posted by: TA | May 19, 2009 10:50 AM
BP,
Cheney a "winner"?!!! That'll be the day.
This whole fracas is a deliberate distraction from that decrepit clown's criminally fascist ways. Waterboarding is torture. Torture is illegal. Cheney authorized torture.
Pelosi's "crime"? A discrepancy on what was covered in a CIA briefing and responding to a reporter about it.
Posted by: Kenny Bunkport | May 19, 2009 10:55 AM
I'm not sure why anyone would support Pelosi at this point. What has she done for her country, or even her party, that deserves congratulations? Moves like promoting Murtha may be required payback for internal party political kick-backs, but still are disgusting and contradict any declaration of new clean government. Her premature grandstanding helped lose the vote for the first bailout funds, and her current 'I knew but I didn't know' thrash on torture is just pathetic. The Speaker has a critical leadership role in the government - it would be nice to have a leader in that role.

Pelosi should have left W's impeachment on the table. More of the truth would have been known a while ago. The 'what did she know when' BS is nothing compared to Cheney and Bush authorizing torture and their own brand of terror. The repugs are desperate right now. I did not think much of Pelosi after the election that gave her the speaker position when she did not care to go after the truth or justice. Same for head-in -the-sands-of-justice Obama.

Whats her story today Don? It seems as everyday goes by Nancy Pelosi has a different story of what occurred. Over the weekend she changed her story again and blamed it on George Bush. She is starting to sound like some of the Posts in the Chicago Tribune that blame everything on George Bush from backaches to the common cold. This is no way for a Speaker of the House to act.

Bye-bye Nancy.
If waterboarding is torture, then why have thousands of reporters/journalists and even anti-torture protesters agreed to be waterboarded? Frat houses have harsher initiation methods than waterboarding.
Posted by: EL | May 19, 2009 12:21 PM
This is the way Pelosi has lived her entire life. One big fat lie after another. Result: The lemming democrats are too dumb not to vote for her.
Posted by: BDD | May 19, 2009 12:24 PM
Number one, all the evidence of what she knew or did not know is out yet. Two, why do wingnuts consistently take a story about one Democrat and label all of them? Based on that logic, I guess all Republicans are warmongers, thieves, and sex perverts that hang around airports waiting for men.
Posted by: Disgusted | May 19, 2009 12:29 PM
What is funny is that people are making a huge deal of her lying about knowing about the water boarding....If it is such a bad thing to lie about this....what does it say about the people who actually approved the water boarding?

Pelosi's recent news conference was the most garbled and confused performance I've seen in years. She lacked any credibility, and although I don't trust the CIA in particular, I'm going with Panetta on this one. Pelosi has made a very serious charge...she needs to either retract it and apologize...or follow up on the charge and see that CIA officials a prosecuted for breaking the law.

I read these posts and I continue to be amazed by both sides who drink the Political party Kool-Aid.
When you were conceived you were given a brain which allowed you to evaluate and make decisions, but it appears as if some of you continue to want someone (political party) to tell you how to think. Why don't you move to another country, where you can be a zombie and not offend those who demand accountability and responsibility from our elected officials
I wanted Kennedy, Gingrich, Rumsfeld, Craig and others to resign after they abused their power and did a disservice to the American people. Some did, some didn't. The party line people keep reelecting and supporting those who have committed misdeeds, Case in point, Chicago, Illinois and Cook County,
My take,Pelosi should not be Speaker of the House, third in line for the Presidency. She does not represent what the people of this country want and we have had enough SPIN from politicians in this Country, State, County and City

Have to agree with you, Greg, and that's why there is NO need to get all excited about her going anywhere.
At what point do democrats not stand with her. Not sure that dividing line exists. The msm may ask a tough question or two, but how driven are any of them going to be to keep pressing anything. If there were some s*x in the story, we could count on the National Inquirer to carry the water, but otherwise, there is no reason to get excited here. She doesn't have that Schumer smugness, or that Leahy-Durbin deception. She is not an AlGore rant machine. Gotta like that. Stay or Go, makes no difference either way.

Mark, your article would be more believable (IMO) if you also mentioned other peoples names who disagree with Pelosi. It's not just Republicans and Boehner. Try Obama's CIA Director Panetta. There's many more people and all they are saying is "Nancy, your story about the CIA, with the information we have is not quite right".
Anything wrong with that? Oh, I watched her last "media" explanation, and I didn't notice she was being questioned at a GOP caucus. I could be wrong, I'm generally told so.

First of all you might not be claiming you're a Democrat when you're paying $10 a gallon. With the FED printing money to take care of the current an projected deficits, it may be $20. Also if this guy gets his news from Fox, you must be getting yours from CNN (the Communist News Network).

If 38% thinks she is doing a 'good job', then 38% of the country is ignorantly following an ideology 'at all costs'. Truth, honesty, and integrity should ALWAYS trump party lines.
When will we EVER EVER have a honest politician and a honest voting base? These crooks and liars are simply a reflection of society as a whole.

I agree with the above poster. Fraternity hazing activities are harsher than waterboarding. So were my high school football conditioning practices outdoors in August. Tie me on the board, it can't be worse.
These are bad, bad dudes, and don't think for one second they will decide to play nice with captives they take just because we say we will. These are zealots with no morality or human decency whatsoever. Even the German soldiers had SOME honor, wore a uniform, and in some instances the two sides ceased firing and ate Christmas meals together.
God forbid something else happen, Obama better have the guts to do WHATEVER it takes to keep this country safe. Don't apply for the job if you don't have the stomach for it.

Something I would love to see but probably never will:
a no-holds-barred debate between Nancy Pelosi and Dick Cheney.
THAT would be worth turning on the TV for.
p.s.- JungleJim - Pelosi represents the people''s republic of san francisco, and as such couldn';t care less what people like us think they will re-elect her w/o a 2nd thought (it takes a 1st thought to have a 2nd thought - ha ha!) but it would be nice to see her replaced as speaker, because right now she is 3rd in line to the presidency, behind Joe Biden and THAT is scary.
Posted by: Terry | May 19, 2009 1:36 PM
Nancy and Joe Biden are doing wonders for the Dem party. The more they talk and lie, the better the GOP does. You know, all this talk about having elected an African American President. How come no one talks about electing the first mentally challenged Speaker of the House? Go Nancy!

Well, I don't care much for either party. There are liars and power hungry sh!tbags on both sides. I live fairly simply, and don't understand the mentality of people who need to have control over others. What on earth gives another the right to force their views down my throat? I mean, I understand some laws are necessary, against murder, theft, and so forth, but junk like abortion and gay marriage? You're against abortion, don't have one. You're against gay marriage, don't marry one. You're against guns, don't buy one. Are there no honest politicians left who actually have the taxpayer's best interests at heart, instead of a bunch of self-serving sh!ts who only want to be re-elected?
Anyway, I think that the Dems should have just been happy with their majority, and not decide to flex their new muscles in going after the past administration. All it did was open one big damn can of worms that is now turning around to bite the Dems in the caboose. They just should have changed torture policy as they saw fit, and been done with it. Now we are going to spend the next 20 years with every new administration going after the previous one. It's a taudry circus, that I, for one, am getting really sick and tired of.

Here is someone Pelosi might be able to battle to a draw.
