The Democrats are portraying the GOP as a reality-show: 'Survivor.'

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Men have grown more independent from any political party during the past couple of years, which helps account for the Republican Party's slide in party-identification, Gallup has found.

Men are most likely to say they are politically independent - 40 percent said so in a series of surveys over the first quarter of the year - with just 30 percent identifying themselves as Democrats and 28 percent as Republicans. With women siding more with the Democratic Party, this has helped build a "solid double-digit advantage'' for the Democrats in overall party identification, Gallup reports today: 41 percent of all Americans surveyed saying, Democrat, 27 percent, Republican.

`The party-identification among women found in Gallup's first quarter 2009 surveys is "typical'' of what Gallup has found over the past year - roughly four in 10 identifying as Democrats - though the current 41 percent matches the highest levels recorded since 2000.

"Since late 2006, however, the gap between the percentage of men identifying as independents and the percentage identifying as Republicans has grown, and independent men have outnumbered Republican men for the last two years running,'' Gallup reports. "Over this time, Republican identification among men has largely been on par with Democratic support, a clear negative sign for the GOP given the solid support the Democratic Party has among women.''

"The Republican Party is in deep trouble," said Colin Powell, former secretary of state for one Republican president and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff for another, speaking this week at a conference in Washington sponsored by Fortify Software Inc. The party has to reconcile with the fact that the mood of the voters has changed, he said: "Americans do want to pay taxes for services... Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."

The Democratic Party, which has cast the GOP as "The Party of No,'' also has reeled out a "Survivor'' web-video (see it above) asking which one of the GOP's spokesmen "will battle for the heart and soul of the party." Some of the faces are familiar -- and Powell, suggests, also a problem:

Powell, criticizing some of the party's leaders for bowing too far to the right, suggested that neither radio commentator Rush Limbaugh nor commentator Ann Coulter serve the party well. The party lacks a "positive" spokesperson, according to Powell: "I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without.''

The implications in the polls?

"The last three years have brought little in the way of good news for the Republican Party, including two decisive national election defeats,'' Gallup's Jeffrey Jones writes. "During this time, Democrats have expanded their advantage in party identification nationally and have solidified their support among women. Republicans' former advantage over Democrats in leaned party identification among men has disappeared, though the parties remain competitive.

"If there is any silver lining for the Republican Party, it is that while men have become less likely to identify as Republicans, they have not necessarily moved in great numbers to the Democratic Party, but instead have shifted more toward an independent political orientation. That would seem to indicate at least a possibility that men who formerly identified as Republicans could someday return to the Republican fold.''

The results come from aggregated data from several polls, each consisting of interviews with approximately 1,000 adults, each with a possible margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

"Americans do want to pay taxes for services... Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."
Looks as this means Obama Socalism.

Inky proving the context of the thread. This is what they offer.......zippo, nada, bunk. Thank you Inky for that indepth look at our problems.....now go back to sleep. You must be worn out.

I hope that Rush keeps up the good work of the Republican Party. He really is the one leading the party right now.

Inky - I think what Powell meant was with the last 8 years of Republicans in charge they let all government oversight lapse, Americans see how well that worked and now want some oversight.

There you go again !! Is a fairer government, a socialistic government ? I don't think so and many other American don't thinks so, either. Peddling fear and smear nonsense, is what landed the Republican Party into the comical figure, into which, it has evolved ! Maybe, if you say it often enough, " Obama Socialism ", people will laugh even louder and harder !! We need some more amusement, we are tired of seeing the same old elephants trotted onto a stage, trying to pass for new characters and with new ideas and ideals !! So, crank up that distortion machine, some more, call President Obama all the names and distort all you want, the Republicans have to be good for something, right now !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

And the point of this piece now is to what?....

Draw attention away of obama's ahhhhh problems/missteps/goofs and disasters?

Why show this now?

Where was this piece say.....3 months ago? or in two months?

obama needs to cover his butt now so this is dragged out when needed?

Powell is correct. The Republican party is in deep do do and rightfully so. They have absolutely nothing to offer. Nothing except negativity, lies, and hypocrisy. They are bitter and frustrated. Just look at characters like 'bug eyes' McConnell, John Boner, slimy Peter Roskscum from Illinois. The list goes on and on. They more than deserve to be thrown out of office. The GOP will lose again in 2010 and most likely in 2012. Then there's Druggy Limp-baugh, Sean Hannity (Limp-baugh Lite) and Michael Weiner Savage who barf up lies and falsehoods everyday. The new buzzword is socialism.

The Republican party got the country into the mess it is in today. Thy hav no right (pun intended) to complain about Obama.

"Americans do want to pay taxes for services... Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."

Actually, NO - this is NOT the case. How can this be true when under Obama's tax policies, about 50% of tax filers will not pay any federal income tax? The bottom 40% pay a net negative - meaning they get a welfare payment back from the federal government. The top 20% of Tax Filers pay 86.3% of the Federal Income Taxes and that's growing....that was in 2006.

This is simply more media propaganda in an off election year. Wait to see the results of 2010 and 2012. Unfortunately, at the rate Obama's going....we'll be a bankrupt nation by then.

Michael Weiner Savage who barf up lies and falsehoods everyday. The new buzzword is socialism.

You gotta love England kicking this guy out. Along with radical clerics.......hello! hello!

The Repubs will not change because it has too much money invested in its current infrastructure centered around Fox-Limbaugh news. To change would require them to bust up the Fox news methodolgy. O'Reilly, Hannity, etc,,, make millions off of the 25% dead-enders. They are in it not to win but to protect their millions. They can't turn back that kind of cash. The only way they could make more money is by appealing to a greater audience, but that would mean they would have to admit they were wrong up to now.

The proof: they hold no influence over the voters of this country, just the 25%-ers.

Powell is no longer a Republican, if he ever was one. It's funny how the left wants to not only define themselves but to define their loyal opposition, as well.

President Obama's administration is all about punishment. Increasing taxes on a certain subset of the population as a punitive measure is wrong. All Americans should have a stake in America. All should pay something towards the government that provides services.

"The party of No" moniker is more of an indication of what is wrong with Democrats. They can't say no because they want everyone to like them. This philosophy is why so many parents won't discipline their children, won't declare anything wrong, and won't reign in an out of control government.

Jesus said there would always be poor people. It is better to donate to private and local charities than to expect the government to decide who is worthy and who is not.

Why doesn't Powell come out of retirement and be the spokesman. He is very rational and actually believes the principles of low taxation and free markets (with some oversight bodies). Overall a relatively free market will produce a higher GDP per hour worked. Also, we are 4th in GDP per capita according to the world bank. Singapore which is a largely free market is ahead of us, as well as Luxembourg (tax haven) and Norway (oil and gas exports). There is a strong correlation between quality of life and free market economics, that is of course, unless your country is floating in a sea of oil. http://www.stopkillingourdollar.com/

With a democrat in the White House and control in the congress and senate, why bother to mention republicans?

Faux republican Colin Powell says,

"Americans DO want to pay taxes for services... Americans are looking for MORE GOVERNMENT in their life, not less."

Is Colin Powell suffering from dementia?

Does Colin Powell consider himself a republican?

Let's face it. Colin Powell is loyal to his race, not the republican party.

Colin Powell needs to do an "Arlen Specter" and join the democrat party.

Who cares what the man says? He does not reflect republican principles. Powell is promoting democrats and more importantly his black brother, Obama. It's not what is best for this country and EVERY citizen, but what is best for black citizens.

When the democrats, who let's face it, ARE IN POWER start attacking republicans...tells me that republicans are starting to make headway with the public.

Colin Powell needs to remember that there was a little more 10,000,000 votes that separated Obama and an old poorly chosen republican, McCain in the presidential popular vote.

The landslide was in electoral votes and that is where republicans need to concentrate.

Those 50millionplus who voted for McCain will not turn around and vote democrat in the next election. They will now be joined by those who have now seen the agenda of the Obama administration.

They DON'T want to PAY MORE TAXES and they DON'T want MORE GOVERNMENT in THEIR LIVES.

When the democrat stooges attack republicans and future prospective republican candidates...know that the democrats are WORRIED and they are using, manipulating the people and the "news".

Forget Powell, he's in the same category as McCain. Old guys.

The republicans just need to watch out for the third party candidates. Take the step and collaborate with Libertarians, block democrats from splitting the votes.

That's the step republicans need to take and that is a big step.

Do it. Regain control. The people are with republicans and libertarians. These groups need to work together.

Colin Powell is a front for democrats. He supported Obama and continues to do so.

He is out of touch.

I believe the country is sick over the lack of responsibility of our politicians.
Our politics is being driven not by the majority of voters but by the fringe groups[unions, homosexuals, abortion as birth control, illegal immigrants, ACORN followers, pedophiles, anti-Christian, et al,] who dominate the democratic party and the mainstream media who lie and refuse to report honestly the facts.
Obama won by 52% to 47%, not a mandate by any means but the media would have us believe
"everyone" loves Obama. He is a progressive much like FDR and the results will be similar. As FDR's Sec. of Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., one of the most powerful men in America, had a startling confession to make before influential Democrats who ran the House Ways and Means Committee, in 1939.
"We have tried spending money . WE are spending more than we have ever spent before and IT DOES NOT WORK."
Why doesn't our media report this?

Hey Doug R....

Hold up a bit before your next comment so that I can put my house palnts next to the monitor in order to fertilize them !!!!!

Are you that shallow that you think Limbaugh runs the republican party?

Yet you have no problem in completely ignoring obama's pedigree (Illinois/Chicago connection).

Do you really think that conservative commentors are more influentical on the republican party than the Illinois/Chicago/corrupt democrate party and the liberal media outlets like msnbc/ny times/ccn and the rest on obama and adminisration?

Collin Powell sounds like a complete id iot! I've lost alot of respect for the man, but now I do not recognize the strong conservative leader that he once was. He stated, "Americans want to pay more in taxes and have govt. more involved in their live." Is he crazy? I think so. No we do not want to pay more taxes, we pay enough for everything! Our heating bill is way too high and expected to go up even more? The Cap & Trade is a bad idea for people who live in cold weather climate such as Chicago. Americans don't want a bigger govt, it is too big and inefficient as is and the Democrats are making it look even more inefficient. So far spending has increased considerable and what did we get for the trillion spent? More job losses announced today by Microsoft. Things are not getting any better for those unemployed or those families working such as mine. Things are still getting tougher.

Colin Powell is correct that the Republican Party is currently in trouble. They seem to have fallen into the same position that the Democratic Party was in the 1970's and 1980's when the Far Left Wing of that Party took control and chased the Democratic Moderates and Conservatives out. This resulted in landslide Republican victories in Presidential Elections in 1972,1980 and 1984.

The Republicans need new leadership and programs. They have a good chance to pick up Senate Seats in 2010 in Illinois, Connecticut and New York where Democrats are in trouble. They have to run candidates that can win those seats like a Mark Kirk in Illinois. They need new direction and must open up the Party to all people (Big Tent) like the late Jack Kemp always advocated. And the Democrats being Democrats will mess up as usual by moving too Far to the Left. This will give the Republicans an opportunity to make a comeback. But if the Limbaugh's and Hannity's are the leaders this will not happen. There are talented Republicans and if they emerge in the leadership roles and offer new good programs the GOP will be back.

Why would any fool want to pay taxes to the government for services?

Because of the great efficiency with which our tax dollars could be used?

The think the great Colin Powell has lost his marbles.

The mainstream media is trying to shape the minds of the lemmings.

No more, no less.

Hey Jim,

Obama won 53-46. More accurately, he won by 7.2%.

Also, I'd take a double look at the nasty stereotyping you thought would be so elegant in your post. Seems to me that a huge amount of pedophilia comes from devine institutions and the Republican party. Just look at Howard Scott Heldreth, Edison Misla Aldarondo, Strom Thurmond, Lawrence E. King, Jr, Craig J. Spence, Dan Crane, Beverly Russell, Jeffrey Patti, Stephen White, Earl "Butch" Kimmerling, Paul Ingram and on and on and on. Some of these sick individuals even planned child sex parties inside the white-house.

It's not that I don't mind people who are grossly misinformed. I just have a huge problem with broad brushes being published on an open forum by those who have limited access to basic facts.

Let's face it. Colin Powell is loyal to his race, not the republican party.

(clip)

"Who cares what the man says? He does not reflect republican principles. Powell is promoting democrats and more importantly his black brother, Obama. It's not what is best for this country and EVERY citizen, but what is best for black citizens."

...............................

And this is why African Americans shun the Republican Party. This is why African Americans overwhelmingly feel that the Republican Party is hostile to them. The Southern Strategy continues , but what people like Vick haven't realized yet is that theose politics don't work very well anymore. Most Americans see through that rhetoric of racial division and reject it, even in the south.

The GOP will probably end up following this poor advice. Powell is correct that the party is shrinking. It's shrinking because conservatives like myself will no longer support people such as McCain, Snowe, Collins, Coleman and even Powell. What's the point of voting for a Republican if they side with Democrats? Even on one issue. I don't believe in "Bipartisan". I want politicians I vote for to never compromise the on the principals they ran on. Let the other party compromise on their lack of principals. The GOP needs to make principals part of their platform. They need to be chiseled in stone. If a politician fails in his/her votes to support these principals, then the party needs to expel them ASAP. I am taking my conservativism to the Constitution Party until I see the GOP return to the conservative principals that won me over in the 80s. Chances are I will never again cast a vote for a winning presidential candidate in my lifetime due to this decision, but I will no longer compromise on my principals.

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political control they've enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don't have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and "advocate" the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The survival of today's shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America's increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

The idiom "caught between the devil and the deep blue sea" is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.

Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh's storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.

And that would be what? The political philosophy of Southern California?

Seems like a lot of these 25% dead-enders still read the Trib. They'll never support Obama no matter how much success he achieves because.......(you get one guess).
To all these defenders of the Repub way, guess who put Obama in office? Your party did. People are not going to vote for more incompetence and arrogance when it's costing them their jobs, homes and standard of living.

The Republican Party is out of touch with the public because it has gone astray from its ideals. Republican Party was always the Business party: fiscal responsibility and for the past 8 years, it has clearly went far away from that. The Republican Party is also about Less Government and for decades, it has gone away from that ideal when it interferes with people's very private issues such as the right to live, woman's choice to her own body, religous freedom, what we do in our own bedroom, and other social issues. Issues which should have absolutely nothing to do with politiicians, least of all a bunch of old white men. The American public has gotten more open, diverse and besides, has more problems to deal with of their own than worrying about somebody else's problems about what they do in their own home. Who cares? I have my own problems to deal with. Republicans: don't worry so much about our own private lives, worry about how you're going to fix the economy, health insurance, energy, violence and other issues the "less is more" government can actually do something about.

Good for you, Joe! You stick to those principles. Don't let anything or anyone tell you different!
.
(That way, your vote for a third-party candidate will split the Republican vote and ensure a Democratic victory. I like this way of thinking more and more! Hope you get a LOT MORE ex-Republicans on your side!)

I don't believe in "Bipartisan". I am taking my conservativism to the Constitution Party

Posted by: Joe Stephens | May 6, 2009 11:38 AM

Maybe the Taliban party would be a better fit. They are nice and extreme also.

55,000,000 people voted for McCain, a weak candidate.

Those people have NOT changed their minds. They will NOT vote for Obama in 2012. That's for sure.

Guaranteed that millions who voted for Obama in 2008 will move to another candidate.

What can happen though, is that a third party would split the republicans and keep Obama in office.

That's why there is so much foment in the news regarding the "two" sides of the republican party...the so-called "conservatives" and the "moderates".

Emanuel and Axelrod want to divide the republicans through "news" stories, speeches and tv commentary.

Now, the question remains: are the republicans wise (ofcourse they are!) to the Axelrod rehearsed dust-ups in the media?

As for afro-americans being "welcome" to the republican party...afro-americans have free choice, they vote in block for democrats, nothing a republican can say, matters.

The afro-americans who are republicans are extremely well versed in the history of both the democrat and republican parties. Watched a conference on Cspan, though few in number, they were right on target regarding principles.

Colin Powell puts his race first and his comments regarding the public WANTING MORE TAXES and WANTING MORE GOVERNMENT is NOT a republican stance.

He is braying to the public to keep Obama in office and to divide republicans. He is not a republican.

Colin Powell is anything other than
a Republican. His statement that the people like to pay taxes and have more government in their lives ranks with some of the dumbness things to ever come out of the mouth of such a learned man. "H" {Obama} is nothing more than a slick snake oil salesman. He thinks he has a mandate to piss away the peoples money. We need less government, term limits, and less taxes. Some of the people out there seem to forget that a lot of our problems originate with our government officials, like, Frank, Dodd, Reid and Pelosi. So, Gen. Powell I'm ashamed at your siding with the Dems, and with a President in the White House who hasn't much respect for our military, and salutes like a fairy.

All of you, Republicans, should be ashamed of yourselves. First of all, questioning a life-long American Officer's patriotism and his honesty and secondly, not owning up to yours, and your Party's, incompetence and dishonesty !! Unfortunately, that seems to be the Republican brand these days: Blame everyone, in our nation, but us, the Republicans !! Well, America is tired of your duplicity and hypocrisy, that is one of the reasons for your Party's shrinking numbers. I suspect they will continue to decline, until you own up to your own incompetency, when it comes to leadership choices. I need only to point to Cheney and Bush !! Enough said !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Powell is an intelligent sensible man while Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter are self-serving, divisive pundits. Smart Republicans realize these pundits hold them back by spewing hate and distorting facts.

Colin Powell is an American first, a Republican second.

There are a lot of people , on both sides of the political spectrum, who could learn alot from that.

Collin Powell was correct only in that the GOP is in trouble. But he is mistaken in the cause of the trouble and what people want.

The Leadership of the GOP tried to change the party into Democrat-Lite. The began ignoring the base and actually tried to marginalize them.

Mel,
And don't forget; The fundy Xtians say they are Christians first and Americans second.
Why should we trust them to run the country?

Let's test General Powell's theory that the GOP has to move more to the center:

Conservative Reagan ran in 80 - kicked Jimmy's butt in a landslide.

Conservative Reagan ran in 84, with 4 years of conservatism put into use and kicked Mondale's butt in one of the biggest landslide in American history.

Moderate Bush41 won election - on 8 years of conseravtive success.

Moderate Bush41 lost his election by passing a tax increase.

Moderate Dole lost big to Clinton

Conservative Bush43 wins over liberal Al Gore in tight race with everything going seeming well

Conservative Bush43 wins over liberal Kerry.

Moderate McCain loses to first-term Senator Obama.

GOP reatkes Congress in 1994 by running on conservative, smaller gov't platform - wins one of largest Congressional victories in history.

2006 GOP Congress loses Congress by becoming the party of big gov't and large spending - trying to out democrat the democrats.

Conservatism works in this country when it is not given lip service.

That's right. The GOP needs to fully embrace conservative values: no taxes, no homosexuals, no trannies, no atheists, and no gun control.

Tell of your conservatism to Craig, to the people who are payed with tax monies, to the parents of gun violence, just to name a few !! As for Ronnie the Appeaser, anyone can have foreign relations' successes, if you appease our enemies, Iran: Arms for Hostages ! Conservatism works in this country, when you fool and lie to the citizenry of this country !! I think the people of this country have spoken, concerning conservatism. President Obama will highlight the many flaws in conservatism, particularly the heavy-handed influences of the Corporations, served so well by the conservatives, in our government !!
Americans want a government that serves and protects them !! I would rather have big government over big business. At least, with big government, if we do not like the direction our country is headed, we can change the governors. That isn't the case with big business, just take that $5 gallon of gasoline, we were paying some months ago !! There was absolutely, nothing done, by the Bush administration, not even the use of the bully pulpit. That is why President Obama and Vice-President Biden won our White House. America is tired of the rapacious appetites of the Corporations, Big Business !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

FITZ,

Jimmy Carter was such a foriegn policy success - Iranian hostages, Communism spreading in Central America, USSR invades Afghanistan. He was almost as bad at foriegn policy as he was at economic policy. Reagan clean-up all of Jimmy's foreign and economic policy messes

Reagan clean-up all of Jimmy's foreign and economic policy messes

Posted by: Terry | May 7, 2009 6:52 PM

Let's see....

Reagan appeases terrorists holding Americans hostage in Lebanon and trades arms to Iran. Hostages still held in Lebanon.

Reagan cuts and runs from Lebanon when attacked.

Reagan violates the law to support right wing death squads in Central America.

Soviet Union still occupies Afghanistan when Reagan leaves office.

Nicaragua still communist when Reagan leaves office.

Yep, Reagan sure cleaned up those messes Terry. What a group of brilliant successes, I can see why you are so proud.

Liz,

A few years after Reagan left office, his former VP overseas the falling of the Soviet Union, withdrawal of the Soviet Union from Afghanistan and also the defeat of the Sandinistas.

I do agree that Reagan should have been tougher in Lebanon.

The world was a much better place on Reagan's last day of his presidency than on his first. Would you like to go back to the old Soviet Union days?

Your tax dollars go to the rich so they can get richer. Now they are finding overseas tax shelters they had hidden.

I find it interesting the people who criticize the new president are really calling him the names they are and the former admin is guilty of...in other words what psychology calls "transference."

Its always the ignorant who follow the ignorant and the best they can do is call names throughout life like they are 10 years old or lacked an upbringing.
