9/11 is no laughing matter.
So says the Obama White House, on the question of the joke that comedienne Wanda Sykes told at the White House Correspondents Association dinner Saturday night -- the line about radio's Rush Limbaugh being "the 20th hijacker.''
What did President Barack Obama make of that line?
"I don't know how guests get booked,'' Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said today. "That's a White House Correspondents Association thing.
"I think the president -- I haven't talked specifically with him, but my guess is... that I think there are a lot of topics that are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy,'' Gibbs said. "I think there's no doubt that 9/11 is part of that.''
(President Barack Obama found a lot to laugh about in comedienne Wanda Sykes' stand-up routine at the correspondents' dinner, but not the line about Rush Limbaugh and the terrorists.

Sorry wingnuts, the 20th terrorist meme is going to stick. Druggy Rush is Bin Laden's pawn, creating 8 years of divisive misinformations which neutered our foreign, domestic and energy policies.
"I'm only an entertainer" was Rush's excuse to spread the Republican/Rove memo of the day, repeated by all of his co-conspirators on the air waves.
That whole bunch can be considered the "Faux Cell".
Cheney now deems Rush a better leader than Colin Powell. It's fitting, based on the fact that Cheney was actually running the Shrub Jr Puppet Show - that Clear Channel (Druggy Rush's employer) is equally as bankrupt as the GOP.
Boss Limbaugh is continuing what Bin Laden started, keeping things confused & unstable.

Typical Gibbs, an answer that doesn't answer the question at all.

Clearly, the president was entertained. He could have glared, instead, he giggled.

Past presidents -- the Reagans, Bushes and Clintons -- found self-deprecating humor to be safe and funny. Vitriolic references have no place in a White House function and only serve to embarrass the president who is served with the choice of being polite to a perpetrator like Sykes or doing the right thing and walking out.

It does NOT take a Republican to come to the conclusion that the Democrats, their ilk, and most of their supporters have literally lost their minds and grasp of reality. From an independents point of view, isn't this refreshing? I submit that it is, indeed.

Clearly Gibbs should have taken his instruction from the Bush Administration, so conspicuous for their universally transparent, direct, honest and succinct answers to questions from the Press.

I don't know who books the guests.
I don't know who was flying Air Force One around New York.
Isn't it great to have an admninstration that knows so little?
So much for change.

Nothing is as obscene as Bush looking for the weapons of mass destruction (remember Phil Donohue's documentary?) and the audience roaring. What if the people in the audience had a family member killed by Bush's policy?
Posted by: Katrina McHenry | May 11, 2009 4:26 PM
When a so-called comedienne like Ms. Sykes makes devisive remarks about a conservative the media applauds her right to free speech.
This is a repeat of the obscene remarks Whoppi Goldberg made regarding President Bush a little over four years ago.
But if a conservative said something controversial regarding President Obama the editorial pages, starting with the New York Times, would immediately condemn the remarks.

Sooo many people are laughing with Wanda and Barack.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
Terrorism is a funny subject, isn't it?
Next thing, the White House will think about re-enacting a flyover of the 9/11 incident, this time using Air Force One--oh, wait...they've already done that...

To Press Secretary Gibbs in response to who booked Sykes--Must have been the same guy who set up the Air Force One flyby in NYC or perhaps another incompetent person in this fiasco of an administration. The joke is on President Hussein and his continued lack of responsibility for his administrations gaffes as well as his own. As the saying goes, you can take someone out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the person. Oh, yeah, he never lived in a ghetto, he lived a priviledged life provided by his white Grandma. She just forgot to teach the man some class that he desparately lacks.
Posted by: Jo | May 11, 2009 4:50 PM
Instead he laughed when Sykes wished someone to have kidney failure. That's the change we wanted, and the return to class in the whitehouse right?

I don't think Wanda was harsh enough. But more than that, the very ones in the media who need to be doing something about Limbaugh and weepy little Seany Hannity and the misinformation that they spread have not stepped up to the plate to take these two idiots on. Or at least not without apologizing after they do it.
Too bad, it always has to be comedians who speak truth to power.
Wanda, you rock!
Posted by: Goposaur | May 11, 2009 6:36 PM
So, Wanda Sykes "calls it like she sees it"? Well, that's a problem. When the Boston Globe calls it like it sees it (remember the monkey cartoon), however, they're insensitive, racist, and worthy of an Al Sharpton sit-in. Double standard.

I don't give a damn about why the wingnuts think the dinner crossed some sort of line.
Their clown Republican president made jokes about not finding the weapons of mass destruction that were oh-so-imminent that he had to send thousands to die.
Their idiot Republican presidential team choreographed torture techniques in the White House.
These people do not get to decide what is funny or appropriate or classy. They just don't.
Oh no, someone made a joke about how Sarah Palin's abstinence-only education of her children has been a total epic fail. Yeah? And? Her knocked-up daughter is shilling for a pumps company with her talk of how regrettable it is that she has a son.
Oh no, someone made a joke about Rush Limbaugh being a junkie! Well, isn't that awfully classless, since he is, after all.....A JUNKIE!
Yeah, I really don't care what these people think. At all.
Posted by: Deano | May 11, 2009 7:12 PM
I don't know why people think Wanda Sykes is funny. In my eyes, she never has been. What would be funny is to lock up Sykes and Limbaugh in a room and let them have at each other. NBC is such a crappy network, that this would fit into their reality-show programming. Leno could referee.

Hey Wanda, need some new material? How's this for a joke?
In the coming fiscal year President Barack Obama will outspend federal revenues by $1,800,000,000,000, shattering the previous deficit spending record by a factor of four and sending our weary creditors running for the hills, thereby forcing the fed to buy its own debt (aka, "print money") and send the country onto a path of permanent insolvency.
Not funny yet? Don't worry, here's the zinger:
Obama will diligently cut that deficit in HALF by the end of his term.
Get it?
It's fuzzy math! Quadruple the deficit, then halve it, and somehow conclude the result (still double Bush's worst deficit) is an improvement over what was "inherited" at the start of the administration.
Hilarious!

I find it interesting that the Press did not report the hateful comments of people this mindless person didn't like. For a real report on this event and how our sophomoric president handled the comments in non-professional manner (there is legislature before congress that if passed and you were to say what Sykes said you would be marked as a possible terrorist) see link below. The President thought it was so funny he shared it with the person next to him. Never heard someone in the public eye as hateful as Sykes. Hollywood is getting less and less of my money all the time. Maybe none soon at this rate.

I have never heard of Wanda Sykes before and hope to never hear of her again. The fact that Pres "O" laughed at her comments is apalling. We are at a crossroads in American history and our new president is taking us down the wrong path. I don't know if we will ever recover from his actions. Republican or Democrat, please open your eyes and see what this "massiah" is leading us into. Hitler was a great speaker too. You may be sorry for what you have brought into being. I hope our children survive what he has already started to put into motion. Good Luck All!

I condemned the "joke" Mike Huckabee made during the campaign about someone taking a shot at Obama. In fact, I noted at the time that no one (Democrat or Republican) defended that "joke." I find it appalling that anyone would defend Ms. Sykes when she wished someone dead. In a civil society, it is never proper - let alone funny - to wish for the death of anyone. I have long noted how the "new tone" is nothing but more hate mongering that rivals that I've heard and abhorred on the right. So called progressives, listen: There is never, ever an excuse for wishing someone dead. That the President of the United States would laugh at this and encourage it is all the more disturbing.

There is video shoing Obama laughing. He congratulated Sykes after her performance.
While I think there's absolutely nothing funny about wishing a US citizen dead for, essentially, having the temerity to disagree with an elected official, I found Obama's "joke" about the misguided Air Force one debacle even worse. He claimed to be "furious" about that idiotic stunt. Someone lost his job. (And in no way do I believe someone in the WH didn't approve of it. No way. You don't just get to take AF One up in the air for a ride without plenty of authorization.) And he treats it like a joke.

Disgusted1, you're a phony. Any TRUE fan of Sykes' would be hip to her style of humor. It's always been acerbic, in fact, worse than what you're whining about. So stop trying to pull the wool over. No one believes--or cares about--anything coming from a party that referred to the President as a "Magic Negro," "terrorist," and "unAmerican."

Rush Limbaugh can lift his disgusting "Jabba the Hut" frame up and let all kind of filth pour from his hole and you say nothing. Someone actually responds to this insignificant waste of a human life then it's a big deal. Shut up.

Something, obviously is wrong with the whole picture of the President sitting down and being entertained with the type of comedy reserved for fools. Whoever found this Sykes for this occasion made a mistake. Basically, this unnecessary display of low-class banters tells the American people a lot of what kind of leadership we are under in right now. So sadly, where Democrats will take this nation to. Respect for one's country and a society's complete turnaround (as the insensitive comment on 911) has been made into a laughing stock. I never in my dreams would see this day, when my country have to listen to this kind of garbage. "Oh no, Mr. and Ms. Democrat... don't tell me it's simply for entertainment." There's many ways to that. You may go to your grandma and grandpa, and ask them if this is 'entertainment.' I bet you, their answer will surprise you.
Posted by: eva | May 12, 2009 1:50 PM
I think what she said was so disrespectful to our President and far from funny. Making fun of Obama's white heritage or his mom and his kids grandmother was so distastful. Also, 911 wasn't funny and very upsetting to listen to her callous joke. But, if the president finds this funny, it only shows the integrity of this man. I, for one, would never disrespect him in this manner, calling it a joke, and I didn't even vote for him! We need to GROW up and be a country to be proud of, not embarrassed of. It is just like our so called news, now that's a joke!

Oh and Bush didn't joke about weapons of mass destruction? Wasn't he looking under the table for them and poking fun at the fact that none had been discovered? Odd you didn't find that as offensive. The entire reason the nation went to war was because of these alleged weapons and yet Bush was joking about the fact that none were ever found. Were you equally as bothered by that, Eva?
