Among the young, that is, so guess who these commentators are courting.

Are Matthews, Olbermann and Maddow beating out "no bias, no bull?''

MSNBC, the cable news network that has handed over its evening run to a decidedly liberal lineup that now also includes The Ed Show, says it's running No. 1 among young viewers - ages 18-34 - and No. 2 among the son-and-daughters-of-Baby Boomers set, 25-54, in prime-time cable news.

In the competition for a news-driven audience in the political commentary category, with MSNBC staking out the left flank and FOX News Channel holding down the right with Bill O'Reilly and company, MSNBC boasts that CNN's commitment to a moderate course - after Lou Dobbs gets off the air, that is - is costing viewers.

Countdown with Keith Olbermann was the No. 1 show in cable news competition at 8 pm EDT among the 18-34 set, the network notes of the newest Nielsen ratings. (Which also tells you something about which audience they are seeking.)

The often over-the-top-and-out-of-the park Olbermann continues to solidly beat CNN at 8 p.m., out-rating Campbell Brown: No Bias No Bull by a huge 103 percent in the 25-54 age set(323,000 vs. 159,000) and beating Nancy Grace by 6 percent (323,000 vs. 304,000). Countdown also out-rated Campbell Brown by "a whopping 72 percent''in total viewers (1,094,000 vs. 635,000) and Nancy Grace by 25, the network notes.

Some challenge for Brown, just back from maternity leave.

And The Rachel Maddow Show has again out-rated CNN's Larry King Live among the 25-54 age group, beating the CNN program by 6 percent (247,000 vs. 232,000). This is the seventh time in eight months that Maddow has won that cohort.

Hardball with Chris Matthews at 7 p.m. EDT beat CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight by 3 percent among the 25-54 set. (187,000 vs. 181,000), by 1 percent in total viewers (664,000 vs. 657,000) and by 33 percent among those aged 18-34 (60,000 vs. 45,000).

Of course, this is all cable news programming.

Re-runs of "House" are probably beating them all.

These statistics come as no surprise!...Olbermann, Matthews, Maddow are all wicked, evil anti-American pieces of garbage. This current generation of college graduates have been taught that "capitalism is evil" and it is the responsibility of the government to take care of you from the time you are born to the time you die. You don't have to support yourself anymore in this country..if you fail...Barack Obama and the Democratic Party will reward you by confiscating money from rich, hard working Republicans and give it to you. Liberals have completely destroyed the work ethic of this country!!!!

Faux will always win the ratings game because they're not a real news outlet.

Joe,

Just who was in charge the last 8 years? You really need to check your meds, your rants are borderline psychotic and always inane. Gotta love the way the reicht wingers are imploding...its great theater.

Joe,
How can anyone take you seriously with a rant like this? Do you really think that just because a person is a liberal it makes them anti-American? Do you really think that all Republicans work hard and make money and all Democrats are lazy and unemployed and looking to cash in from welfare? Seriously?

Joe,
You sound deluded, misinformed and frustrated. If you want to talk about evil, wicked, anti American...that would be smarmy Dick Cheney.
Move overseas to a real Socialist country.

In the Left wing world Mark Silva inhabits, CNN (the "Clinton News Network") is "middle of the road".

In the real world, a look at 2008 political contributions by CNN employees shows a 3-1 Dem over GOP edge.

Yes, for Mark Silva, 3-1 Dem is centrist. Says a lot about The Swamp.

Joe,

Well mate, hate to break it to you but I would be considered a liberal by your definition; but I am of the "elitist" type.
Odd thing...liberals are either rich elitists or poor slobs on the government dole.
Does that imply Republicans are the majority of the middle class? or just what they want the real middle class Americans to blindly believe?
All the while stealing their futures with "capitalism first" ideals.

Mark, why do you leave off the ratings numbers for Fox News? Is it because MSNBC is lying about his ratings? The fact is that Fox News beats MSNBC by about a 3-1 margin overall. Also, Fox News ratings are better than MSNBC and CNN COMBINED! Throw in Headline News and CNBC and Fox News still beats all combined. I also believe in the coveted age bracket of 25 to 54 year olds, Fox News beats MSNBC.
But then truthful and honest reporting and Mark Silva have about as much in common as trees and steel.

Once more the wanna-be journalist, JohnnyDelusional, misses the point, again. The story was comparing MSNBC to CNN. No where was Faux News mentioned. Leave it to another knuckle-dragging Republithug to scream look over there to divert from the story at hand. Your constant, misguided diatribes probably explain why you never became a "real" journalist little Johnny.

Idiot-for-life Neil, please re-read the second and even fourth paragraphs of Silva's piece. He says MSNBC claims it's number one for one age group and number 2 for another. The reality is that MSNBC has long lied about and distorted its ratings, and Silva gleefully reports as fact the MSNBC lie.
Another reality, is that since Fall of 2008, MSNBC's ratings have been in a freefall.
The headline is misleading too. Liberal commentators are not up, their ratings are down.

But Mark Silva doesn't usually report on things he doesn't like or hurt his cause. For instance, nowhere in here is a Swamp item about the recent Gallup Poll in which 65 percent of those polled were against closing Gitmo and 75 percent don't want those prisoners on U.S. soil --period.

Speaking of the liberal media. Shortly after the murder of Dr Tiller the abortionist, NBC suggest that Fox News' O'Reilly had a cause and effect connection with the murder.

Using the NBC logic, it would follow that the likes of NBC's Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow had a similar cause-and-effect on the murder of this U.S. solider.

With all the vile these two have been spewing on America's treatement, and especially of the treatment of the US military, on muslims over the past 7 years. Who could blame this young man for shooting an American solider? Was it MSNBC's constant harping on the US policy on Gitmo that led him shoot this solider? If MSNBC's teleprompter readers want to hold O'Reilly and Fox News accountable for Tiller's murder, then Keith, rachel, and Tingly legs Matthews s/b held accountable likewise.

Little JohnnyDingbat: No wonder you you'll never be a real journalist. First rule in Journalism is spell someone's name right.

"With all the vile these two have been spewing on America's treatement, and especially of the treatment of the US military, on muslims over the past 7 years. So what Terry is saying is that the facts of what the US military is doing are so bad, and so evil, that it justifies the killing of US soldiers. He doesn't dispute what has been reported, he just has a problem with US policy being reported and discussed. He then says that if you listen to those facts, it naturally follows that you will want to kill US military personnel.

Why does Terry hate America? Why does he hate our soldiers? Why does he justify acts of terror?

CLOUless,

It's an analogy. If you believe that O'Reilly and Fox and their reporting on Dr. Tiller led to his murder, then you must believe that the MSNBC daily harping about the US military being "evil" and it led to the murder.

You concluding paragraph shows absolutely no logic, but I didn't expect any from you. It is the likes of liberal MSNBC that does not like the American military.

After reading this, why does public education fail so many of our youth?

Olbermann is a frustrated ESPN sports reporter who gets his jollys by posing as a Marxist commentator, Rachel Maddow is a sexy, very attractive, intelligent and glib lesbian and Chris Matthews is a has-been political hack who helped run Tip O'Neil's office when he was House Speaker and who commented during last year's campaign that then candidate Obama made the skin on his leg tingle. No wonder MSNBC has come up in the ratings.
