Republicans may be in decline, the party out of power and apparently leaderless, but politicians still must contend with a formidable conservative base of voters that straddles party lines.

Conservatives, polling finds, still represent the biggest bloc.

So far this year, four in 10 Americans surveyed by the Gallup Poll call their political views conservative.

Moderates account for 35 percent.

And liberals log in at just 21 percent.

"This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004,'' Gallup notes, with the liberal measure "in line with findings throughout this decade'' but "up from the 1990s.''

The newest numbers come from 10 separate surveys conducted from January through May. This makes the margins of error "quite small,'' with "changes of only two percentage points... statistically significant.''

Few see themselves at the extremes of the political spectrum. "Just 9 percent call themselves "very conservative" and 5 percent "very liberal."

Still, "there is an important distinction in the respective ideological compositions of the Republican and Democratic Parties,'' Gallup notes.

"While a solid majority of Republicans are on the same page - 73 percent call themselves conservative -- Democrats are more of a mixture. The major division among Democrats is between self-defined moderates (40 percent) and liberals (38 percent). However, an additional 22 percent of Democrats consider themselves conservative, much higher than the 3 percent of Republicans identifying as liberal.''

And "true to their nonpartisan tendencies, close to half of political independents - 45 percent -- describe their political views as "moderate."

Wow! Throw in those "ignorant redneck teabaggers" and 2010 will be a watershed moment for America. I have a "tingling feeling" already as the worm is turning. How about those 3.5 million jobs created from the stimulus, anybody seem them?

America: 40% Conservative, 21% Liberal.

So Mark, are you going to hire a Conservative to write for The Swamp? Or are Swamp writers still only hired from the 21%?

Wouldn't it be great to have a media that reflects the rich diversity of America, instead of a narrow Left-wing ideology?

Yet Obama just won a landslide election and Americans are rejecting the GOP en masse. So are we sure that count is accurate?

The disappointing fact of this poll, is that, the traditional, conservative party, the Republican Party, still maintained support, after championing conservative tenets, that left America in the emergency room, when it withdrew from power !! That tells me, for whatever a poll is worth, that the conservative party would rather see their country go down the toilet, than to adjust their ideology, to allow for prosperity for a greater number !! All of the tenets of conservatism, by definition, are founded on, maintaining the status quo ! A status quo that was founded in the dark ages of exclusion and the elect !! Those very tenets have left America, gasping for air and struggling to undo the damage done, by a conservative administration, for 8 years. For those who would disagree with my observations, please do not try to cherry-pick, with the last administrations' record !! They were elected under the conservative tenets and they followed what has been considered conservative tenets for 100 years and those tenets have proved to be unacceptable, in our democracy !! Conservative tenets have always denied equal opportunity, equal access and equal education !! Tenets that have no legitimate place in our democracy and that is why President Obama was elected. The people have spoken out against conservatism, just as they have spoken out against fascism and there is a relation between the two agendas !! Don't be fooled by their rhetoric or their scare tactics, a basic tactic of fascism, with which the conservatives continue to hammer the public !! Liberalism is the way to a just and inclusive society, something I hope, even Republicans recognize, makes for a more democratic society, in which to live !! I sincerely hope, a more democratic society is what the conservatives would be working for, not a crippled economy and a defeated President !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

To those 45% of the American public who identify themselves as "moderates" - Please remember that the Republican Party leaders have declared that you are not welcome. They have declared that politicians that support moderate views are not welcome. Vote accordingly next time you vote.

This poll might actually mean something if everyone had a uniform understanding of the terms "conservative," "liberal" and "moderate." But that’s not the case. Many of the reference points necessary to define “liberal,” “conservative” and moderate are not only not self-defining, but also constantly being re-defined. Thus, it is impossible to give the poll results anything other than a general “feel” of where people may place themselves. Many likely answered the poll questions with very different views on what the terms mean. It is certainly no basis to predict future political behavior.

Just because someone is or leans conservative doesn't mean that they are republican. Fatboy and the evangelicals have chased many conservatives out.

Peter Zenger: the Chicago LIBune is not interested in being fair nor an honest broker. The "newspaper" and especially its Washington crew are only interested in one thing: pushing a far left agenda and covering up for its boy. After all, the Chicago Tribune was at the forefront of creating Barack Obama when it derailed Jack Ryan for wanting to have sex with his beautiful wife. And, the Tribune believes conservative Democrat John Kass is all it needs to balance out its operation.
"former republican moderate:" moderate Republicans are just fine. I've voted for many in my life.
But we will see how many moderate Democrats stay that way in the next few years. Rahm Emanuel worked overtime to get moderate Dems to win elections in 2006 and 2010. Problem is, those many of those moderate Dems that won have been marginalized and threatened to toe the left wing party line. As Obama, Pelosi and Reid crumble, we'll see if those folks remain Democrats after 2010 and 2012.

The issue, per the Ryans' divorce documents, was not that Mr. Ryan wanted "to have sex with his beautiful wife." If was that he took her to sex clubs in several different cities and expected her to have sex - against her will - in public, while other people watched them.

Understandable you'd leave that part out, because it says something about a Republican you wouldn't want to have spread around and that's not something you can tolerate. Not so understandable you'd think nobody would remember the truth and that you'd get away with your lie.
/
Do you really think you're fooling anybody?

40% conservative??????but it seems the GOP must not be conservative. The votes just don't show it.

About 50% of the conservatives in that poll, are all the right wing nuts, which means that about 20% of the total are true conservatives, The right wing nuts also include the evangelist's who can stay the hell out of my government! REMEMBER THAT THE REPUBLICANS NEVER DO ANYTHING FOR THIS COUNTRY, THEY ONLY DO THINGS TO THIS COUNTRY!! whiteagle38
