Reacting to reports that North Korea may be preparing to test-fire a missile toward Hawaii, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said today that he had concerns about such a launch and had ordered additional missile defense assets deployed to shore up defense of the islands.
Gates said he had ordered the deployment of a powerful sea-based radar that can help closely track the path of intercontinental ballistic missiles as well as terminal phase missile interceptors to Hawaii. Although Gates did not explicitly say that the U.S. would try to shoot down a missile test aimed in the direction of Hawaii, he noted that interceptor missiles in California and Alaska also were ready.
"The ground-based interceptors are clearly in a position to take action," Gates said. "So without telegraphing what we will do, I would just say, we are -- I think we are in a good position, should it become necessary to protect American territory."
Gates said the Defense Department was watching the North Korean situation and missile preparations closely.
"We're obviously watching the situation in the north, with respect to missile launches, very closely,'' Gates said. "And we do have some concerns, if they were to launch a missile to the west, in the direction of Hawaii.''
Theater missiles in the Pacific Ocean or the mid-course interceptors would be the most likely defenses able to shoot down a North Korean missile.
The THAAD missiles deployed to Hawaii are terminal phase defense, meant to shoot down missiles just minutes before they impact their target. They have not yet been tested on long-range missiles, but would be a final defense should mid-course interceptors fail to destroy their targets.

What Gates really means is that a resolution has been drafted to present to the United Nations lightly condemning the attack on America. Obama is demanding a wrist slap.
.
Apologies to both the victims and the NK's are ready to go. One may not be used, how many electoral votes does Hawaii have anyway?
.
Financial assistance will be offered to North Korea in order to replace the missile that was used.
.
Obama will make a speech in which he will state he was all set to produce his birth certificate, however, it was destroyed in the attack. He will then continue to destroy our economy under the pretence of stimulus. Stimulus has now gone the way of "Global Warming" so it will now be referred to as "Welfare Invigoration".

Yeah, let's take potshots at President Obama because it's *his* administration's policy of isolationism and cowboy diplomacy that's the cause of Kim Jung Il's sabre-rattling and provocation, right?
Well, yeah, except ... no.
It's good ol' Dubya who decided that the best way to get to North Koreans to calm down was to ignore them. Now they have enough weapons grade plutonium for several nuclear weapons and we have to pay attention to them. Brilliant!
Instead of addressing that, though, people would rather talk about Obama the Scary Socialist/Illegal Alien.
It's practically impossible to take many of Obama's critics seriously because they regularly ignore the issue at hand in favor of the latest GOP red herring and/or because they don't sufficiently grasp serious issues such that they can have an intelligent discussion about them.

Although there are only 3 comments thus far, it disturbs me that 2 of the 3 make a mockery of Obama. The situation with North Korea is not one to make fun of. Perhaps if people read more, they might understand why North Korea is pushing its military might. As some analysts have said, its because of Iraq. They saw that we went into Iraq under false pretenses, and that worries them. Thus, their need to show the US, and other countries, that they can stand up to anyone. The only trouble is, the regime in charge in North Korea is not based in reality. People should be hoping for a peaceful solution to this, and hoping for Obama and team to succeed.

The real trump card here continues to be our trading "partners" in Peking. Does anyone seriously doubt that they, who basically bankroll N. Korea, could not squash that little turd in Pyongyang if the mandarins in the Forbidden City so desired? No, they find the Beloved Leader to be a useful surrogate foil to keep the paper tiger to the west off balance. That drivel about concern for "regional stability" (read: worry about another semi-democratic country developing next door) might be easily offset if Obama, like Bush, had made it clear that a nuclear north is Very Bad For Business and continued massive trade surpluses. However that would be difficult for Washington due to the rapidly rising foreign debt issue. Not to worry, the 6 party talks are certain to achieve peace in our time through the same kind of nuanced, sophisticated diplomacy that the europeans used to persuade Iran to drop it's quest for an islamic bomb. Opps ... that didn't work out much better than Munich.

Dear D,
The current administration think that the solution to a missile aimed at Hawaii is to whine and stamp their feet, and maybe pout.
The current president does not think we should make any effort to prevent the missile from hitting the US, using anti-missile technology that has proven successful. His office as a senator made that clear on numerous occasions, as have Senator Durbin, Reid and nearly every other Democrat.
So it is clear that Obama and his party would rather see 500,000 dead Americans than do anything that might upset North Korea.

Than again, that's why we're in the situation(s) that we are in, because while any idiot can point fingers and make stupid comments, it actually takes a degree of intelligence to find solutions.
I'm disgusted that these bottom-feeding mental midgets even think they have a place in the political discourse. These knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing "conservatives" are a far greater danger to our nation than any terrorist, rogue regime or disease could ever be.
But hey, when you're not smart enough to actually understand the issues, what can you expect besides stupid, pointless comments?
These people seem intent on making the term "conservative" a synonym for "stupid," "lazy," "crass" and "uneducated."
Real conservatives are offended that these drooling dolts have stolen our ideology and instead, turned it into an excuse for stupidity and demonstrating a complete lack of any kind o f intelligence or class.
I don't call myself "conservative" anymore for fear of being mistaken for someone who shouldn't be allowed in society without a chaperon.

I'm guessing that some of these idiots are bashing Obama simply because they don't have any soundbites from Rush to spew about North Korea, and God knows, these people have no knowledge about NK or the issues between our countries.

Every administration benefits from a strong opposition party that proposes rational alternatives. The president could use constructive ideas from the Republicans right now on a number of issues, but the GOP is weak and has allowed its extemist wing to grab the microphone.
We see this in Illinois as well. The state GOP has been abandoned to the greedy and the crazy, and this has allowed corruption among Democrats to flower statewide.

Lets give N Korea a few billion dollars to not fire the missile. That worked for Clinton.
that way N Korea can feel like they were victorious and Obama can be a hero for solving this diplomatically.
When N Korea blows that pile of money we can repeat the whole process.

BDD, wrap the tinfoil Stan mentioned around your scrotum--it'll make you invisible to aliens (just watch Hill Street Blues sometime). As for the "powerful sea-based radar" that Sec Gates referenced, my company built a portion of it. Although it looks like a floating golf ball, it was designed to track a softball-sized object from Russia to Alaska. Now I realize that you-know-who can see Russia from her window in the Governor's mansion, but I, for one, am not content to bet the welfare of our good-buddies in Hawaii on her eyesight. Hard to imagine how anyone (other than Fox News) would question our determination against Kim Jong Il (and his son "Mentally").

Don't listen to the Republican knuckle-draggers. They're out of power for a very good reason - they spent the last eight years screwing up everything they touched.
Republicans don't do bipartisanship, all they care about is Party loyalty. Above all else, including sanity. They're like a crime family.
Republicans absolutely will not and cannot agree with anything the Democrats do, ever, because their whole authoritarian belief system hinges on following their leader/father/daddy-figure, even if he (Newt, Rush etc) walks them off a cliff.
Thank you,

George W. Bush continuously criminally stalked Margie Schoedinger to the point that she could not get away from it, and she committed suicide in desperation to escape: he murdered her.
“In her suit, Margie Schoedinger states that George W. Bush committed sexual crimes against her, organized harassment and moral pressure on her, her family members and close relatives and friends. As Schoedinger said, she was strongly recommended to keep her mouth shut. . . . Furthermore, she alleges that George Bush ordered to show pressure on her to the point, when she commits suicide” (blog of drizzten).
“One of those ‘very leasts’ [was] George Bush’s personal complicity in the death (murder to be precise) of my friend Margie Schoedinger in September of 2003. Determining the exact whereabouts and contacts of [then] president-elect George Bush on September 21 thru 22, 2003, should be entirely lacking in difficulty” (Leola McConnell—Nevada Progressive Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010).
McConnell is correct: Bush applying pressure (continuously criminally stalking Margie Schoedinger) purposefully to force Schoedinger to commit suicide does in fact constitute murder where it culminated in her death.
Bush is a racist hate criminal and hates black people (please feel free to see my “GEORGE W. BUSH IS THE WORST PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY” blog). (Schoedinger was an African-American woman.)
BEWARE: If the president of the United States hates one—for whatever reasons—he can continuously criminally stalk one to the point that one cannot get away from it, and one ultimately commits suicide in desperation to escape. He can murder people in this way.
Bush is getting away with his murder of Schoedinger—with no sheriff, prosecutor, or court willing to uphold the rule of law.
Bush’s method of murdering Schoedinger cannot exist in a vacuum: he must have murdered other people in the same way.
Bush should confess, come out with the names of all of the people whom he murdered in the disgusting way he murdered Schoedinger, undergo execution, and accordingly find himself at the intersection where he would be free.
(There are thousands of copies of the information above on the Internet. It exists very extensively in all major search engines. Please feel free to go to any major search engine, type “George W. Bush continuously criminally stalked Margie Schoedinger to the point that she could not get away from it, and she committed suicide in desperation to escape: he murdered her” or “Bush applying pressure (continuously criminally stalking Margie Schoedinger) purposefully to force Schoedinger to commit suicide does in fact constitute murder where it culminated in her death,” hit “Enter,” and find innumerable results.)

North Korea has some of the world's fiercest artillery in distance of and aimed at South Korea's capital, Seoul. If we scrambled the jets and fired our missles, they would still have time to wipe the city off the map. And how many US troops are on the border, in harm's way? The casualty figures from even a short war would make those from our adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq look modest.

Let me see if I got this right:
North Korea *MAY* be planning to launch one of its terribly unreliable Shortdong missiles in the general direction of Hawaii.
Assuming said missile makes it off the pad in one piece (not guaranteed, given their record), it doesn't have sufficient range to actually reach Hawaii; the best it could do is splash into the Pacific a good 500 miles shy of its objective.
Tell me again what we're all hyperventilating about? At worst, or perhaps at best, our friends in North Korea will give us a harmless real-world test of our missile interceptors. Rather kind of them to pick up the tab, really.
Now, with that matter settled, can we get back to the things that matter, like cleaning up the mess left by the last thirty years of political and economic irresponsibility?

Some of the more "interesting" comments in here are from the always loony, always ignorant members of the Left. There are comments about greedy war-mongering Republicans that put us in two wars. Hmmmm, seems one of them, Afghanistan, is a direct result of that country's Taliban allowing Al Qaeda to launch terror attacks from there, and followed by 9/11. Al Qeada and the Taliban fluorished during the presidency of one Bill Clinton. It is always nice to know, though, that the Loony Left keeps showing it never really did support us going into Afghanistan following 9/11.
The loony left: always on the side of the terrorists.

There are some young men collecting for the SEALs at your back door who'd like to speak with you.....
O, wait. They are SEALs......

Al Qaeda was flourishing in Afghanistan, that's why we invaded Iraq.

Right. That's why the Republicans turned their back on Afghanistan, and have consistantly argued against going after Al Qaeda in their Pakistani safe havens. The Republicans are the best friend Bin Ladin has ever had. They have done every thing they can ro protect Bin Ladin, and you havecheered that protection every step of the way. Why do you hate America John D? Why do you want to protect Al Qaeda?

Loony John D should enlighten us about the relatonship between the Bush and bin Laden families. He's another one of these Republicans who would love the see the U.S. attacked again. And another Republican who has a fixation for Bill Clinton.

what are the talks of this system not being tested on long range missils. that means there is at least a 50% chance of possibility that it will not work at all. millions of people come to hawaii to visit not to mention the hundreds of thousands of armed forces men and women stationed here. It a missil was launched at any part of the US it should be that even if the missil didnt hit we should take immediate military action.

You are all missing the point, this isn't about right or left. This is about protecting or country. While you all sit around and point fingers at each other Bush did this Obama did that North Korea is going to launch nuclear weapons pointed in our direction and nobody even seems to care. WAKE UP! We are in trouble. Bush pissed everybody off and Obama is going to let it happen to teach us a lesson and blame it all all on the right.
Our leaders have become a joke and America is going to be the punchline.

Not to raise conspiracy any higher, but is it just coincidence Obama's vault birth certificate is in Honolulu?

Doesn't it concern anyone that our secretary of defense thinks NK can reach Hawaii while firing missiles westward? If that's true, i'd be worried about more than just Hawaii.

Its funny how the divide between the two parties in this country is out of control but only with the voters. If most of you would take the time to do a little research and investigate the facts you would find that for the most part the parties are not that far apart on a lot of issues. The major differences between the parties is fundamental and this brings healthy debate to the table. Clinton, just as Bush did, tried to bring the North Koreans in line by providing financial aid in return for the N K's meeting certian goals that would end there nuclear capabilites. Didn't work then and will not work now.
