The Swamp

by Mark Silva

President Barack Obama said today that he is "committed to passing'' immigration reforms that not only strengthen border control, but also offer millions of workers already in the United States illegally a path to legal residence and citizenship.

The president's pledge to pursue immigration reforms that his predecessor also sought but failed to win comes in the midst of an already sweeping congressional agenda ranging from overhaul of the nation's financial regulation to healthcare reform.

He reiterated his commitment to immigration today in an address at the Esperanza National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

"We must never forget that time and again the promise of America has been renewed by immigrants who made their story part of the American story,'' the president said today.
"I'm committed to passing comprehensive immigration reform as president of the United States.''

The president brought his director of intergovernmental affair, Cecilia Munoz, to the breakfast.

Munoz, former senior vice president at the National Council of La Raza, has been spearheading meetings behind the scenes as the White House prepares to renew a push for immigration reforms that former President George W. Bush sought during his final term - the Senate narrowly agreed to those reforms, including a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented workers already in the U.S., only to see the initiative fail in the House.

Obama also brought Janet Napolitano, the Homeland Security secretary and former Arizona governor who oversees border enforcement.

This was, after all, a prayer breakfast, and the president acknowledged the fact as well.

" We can begin by giving thanks for the legacy that allows us to come together, for it was the genius of America's founders to protect the freedom of all religion and those who practice no religion at all.,'' he said today. "So as we join in prayer, we remember that this is a nation of Christians and Muslims and Jews and Hindus and non-believers. It is this freedom that allow faith to flourish within our borders. It is this freedom that makes our nation stronger.

But Obama, hailing his Hispanic Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, before a constituency that overwhelmingly supported his election last year, also delivered an unmistakable political message for a broader audience.

"Like some of you, I am the son of a parent who came to these shores, in search of a better future,'' Obama told his audience.

"And while I may be the first African-American president, there's nothing unique or unusual about the opportunities that this country gave to me. Instead like generations of Americans, I could count on the basic promise. No matter what you look like or where you come from, America will let you go as far as your dreams and your hard work will carry you. And that promise is at the heart of the American story...

"We also know that keeping this promise means upholding America's tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants,'' he said. "Those things aren't contradictory. They're complementary. That's why I'm committed to passing comprehensive immigration reform as president of the United States.

"The American people believe in immigration,'' Obama said today. "But they also believe that we can't tolerate a situation where people come to the United States in violation of the law - nor can we tolerate employers who exploit undocumented workers in order to drive down wages. And that's why we're taking steps to strengthen border security, and we must build on those efforts.

"We must also clarify the status of millions who are here illegally, many who have put down roots,'' he said. "For those who wish to become citizens, we should require them to pay a penalty and pay taxes, learn English, go to the back of the line, behind those who played by the rules. That is the fair, practical and promising way forward. And that's what I'm committed to passing as president of the United States.''

Does he know he was elected to a 4 year term. If he can-- the 21st century will be one of the most defining and altering for the US-- beginning with Bush Jr moving to Obama-- and maybe one of the most expensive. Not to mention it'll keep the press busy.

As far back as I can remember, my Grandmother complained about the illegal aliens getting into the country. I believe this stemmed mainly from her parents immigrating into the US through Ellis Island legally from Germany. It's hard to argue against the stand that there is a legal way for people to come here and everyone should wait their turn.

Those who do not want to allow people who are here illegally to stay have a point in sending them back to their country of origin as my Grandmother wanted to do back in the 60's. It is just impractical though. There should be a path to give those people who are already in the US a legal status. As much as some do not like the idea, these people are already woven into the cloth of America by the work they do and the things they buy.

People will not stop from trying to get into the US by any means. I feel there will always be people who can't wait to live and work in the United States. It is time for a look at the immigration system.

Didn't we shut down the Capital switchboard a year ago, telling McCain, Bush and the rest of the pols that we didn't want amnesty?

What does Obama think has changed?

Shut down the borders, enforce the laws we already have, THEN come back to us and we'll talk about amnesty. We just don't trust any of you. I'm sure you understand.

Obama could spend dollars on American jobs for American people for the next for four years striaght and he still wouldn't come close to spending what the BushCo Republicans have spent - and they spent it on NOTHING.

Try again.....

Teresa,
Obama is spending to stimulate the economy because the Bush administration (which you supported) took a budget surplus they got from Bill Clinton and blew it by doubling our national debt in only eight short years. And they did it by giving tax cuts to the richest 2% and starting an unnecessary war, among other things.

Obama is investing in AMERICAN JOBS FOR AMERICAN PEOPLE and he's only doing it because after the eight years of Conservative deregulated cowboy trickledown crap economics trashed our economy, he had no choice.

I know that the deadender wingnuts on here already know this but you figure you're going to con people into coming back to that train wreck you call the Republican party by lying. You're not, because most people in this country aren't as stupid as the average Republican is.

Give it a rest, you sociopath!

As much as elected Republicans may try to hide their bigoted attacks on Sotomayor by letting other Wingnuts fling the mud (Gingrich, Limbaugh, Pat Buchanan, Lou Dobbs etc), that distinction isn't going to be made by Latinos watching on the sidelines. They know who pulls the strings in the modern GOP, and the longer they drag this out, and the nastier they behave, the more they'll lose a demographic that is projected to be 30 percent of the American population in 2050.

Without young voters or Latinos, the GOP can't win. They've done a fantastic job of alienating the former with their opposition to equality, and they're about to finish off the latter courtesy of the Sotomayor confirmation hearings.

Considering that the Census Bureau expects the nation to be only 46 percent non-Hispanic, single-race white in 2050, the GOP's continued shoddy treatment of people who don't look like "President" Newt or Boss Limbaugh is only solidifying their journey toward fringe status.

Those who come here illegally, steal our IDs and ignore our laws have already demonstrated they lack the honesty and decency to ever become American citizens.

a.) Enforce the existing immigration laws.
b.) Secure the border.
c.) Don't hire illegal aliens.
d.) No anchor babies.
e.) Deportation through attrition.

SSA estimates that 8.5 million illegal aliens are using fraudulent SSNs. That's a felony that they should be punished for, not rewarded with amnesty.

What bothers me is the obvious race-pandering surrounding this issue. The dems have sold citizenship for masses of Latinos in return for votes.
Dressed up in pretty rhetoric about being a nation of immigrants the proposals for amnesty ignore the impact of mass immigration on America's financial, social and cultural stability.
Every illegal who is permitted to "come out of the shadows" and "get on the path to citizenship" will, because of our generous family reunification policy, be able to bring in all of his siblings, parents and children. They, in turn, will be able to bring in all of theirs. So, infact, regularizing 10 million will result in adding 40 to 50 millions to our population.
How exactly is this good for America?

Those who nod their heads in agreement or look the other way when confronted with right-wing anti-immigrant rhetoric are playing with a loaded gun.

We all know who is responsible for the banking crisis. The banksters, who partied like it was 1927 after their man in DC, Republican Sen. Phil Gramm rolled back Depression era bank regulations. And we all know who drove up the federal deficit. That was George W. Bush who pushed for upper class tax cuts while waging his $600 billion war in Iraq and his $200 billion war in Afghanistan. The previous administration and its allies in Congress engineered our present recession. Why? That is easy. Recession is good for fascism---just look at how Adolph Hitler exploited his nation’s economic woes to take power. Mussolini would not have become Il Duce if his country’s economy had been sound.

The right-wing backed KKK became a powerful force in this country after WWI, by attacking immigrants. When the United States experienced a recession in 1920, anti-immigrants seized upon this economic downturn to begin working on legislation to restrict immigration. Seeing an opportunity

"In the 1920s William Simmons created a new Klan, seizing on Americans' fears of immigrants, Communism, and anything "un-American." Simmons marketed the Klan not only as a white supremacy group, but also a "100% American" organization. He expanded the original Klan's anti-African American position to include Roman Catholics, Jews, and immigrants of all backgrounds. Parochial schools were often singled out by the KKK, because the students were being taken out of mainstream American public schools and instructed to "take orders from a foreign leader," who was, of course, the Pope."

Speaking of immigration....

I'm sure the Republican party leadership will use the Sotomayor nomination to raise a boatload of cash. Their direct mailers will scare the money right out of the wallets of the little right-wing minions.

I love watching the Republican party and their "leadership" wringing their hands over why they aren't in the majority while once again alienating the Latino vote by attacking a Latina who is eminently qualified for this position.

Everytime a right-winger feigns outrage, I smile a little more. It's amusing how Wingnuts are only outraged when it isn't something that benefits them.

The more vehemently the Wingnuts attack her the more likely they will only get 20% of the vote while losing Arizona and possibly Texas in the 2012 election. Pretty soon all the GOP will have left is Alabama and Mississippi - yeehaw!

Paul P, please don't worry.

Anchor babies are not able to petition for parents or siblings until they reach 21.

People having SS deductions made from their wages on false SS numbers actually benefit the rest of the SS system because that money is never paid out to them. Rather it goes to a suspense fund and ultimately back to the SS system, just as do the contributions of persons who die before they are eligible.

And the entire economy would totally shut down if every "illegal" worker did not go to work for a week or so.

Trust me.

I've been looking around. I understand that Obama's 2010 budget leaves little for comprehensive immigration reform (as far as process)-- it mostly covers security and enforcement. I am suspecting-- that amongst other issues on his plate waiting to be be overhauled-- some sixteen billion illegals-- their status and the way that will run into health care--will mean significant government spending. Just a thought. How will they then factor into future "job-creating stimulus" ?. Just a thought. A lot of heft issues coming his way. Which in theory MIGHT or MAY make the *21ST CENTURY* an expansive and therefore expensive time. The verdict is still out if Obama can dent our spending with everything on his plate.

The Kommissar should be committed to doing his sworn duty and protect our border, cut down crime and get rid of the lawbreakers.

I can't say that I'm shocked by these boneheaded Republicans and their demonizing of Spanish-speaking immigrants. This tactic of blatant, shameless racists calling OTHER people and groups racist because they believe that someone other than rich, straight, white men should get ahead just makes the GOPer's look worse than they already do.

It is called Single Family Dwellings. Not Thirty to a house. Get a Drivers Licence, Insurance and pay taxes. Obey our Laws then talk to me about Amnesty. We break the Law we go to jail. They break the law.Police turn their head. They have no support. They would rather be in jail than their Country.

lochness, you set out both sides of the issue pretty well. As usual with Obama, he offers a broad idea (path to citizenship) but offers no details. How could amnesty be granted without rewarding the breaking of our laws, and by allowing illegals to leapfrog immigrants who are lawfully waiting in line? Another problem with offering amnesty is that what would be the motivation for any immigrant to follow the lawful process, when they can sneak in and be rewarded with amnesty? I think the starting point has to be sealing our border to the south. Let's be honest here; it's not like we're being flooded with illegal Canadiens. Once the border problem is solved, then we can consider what to do with illegals already inside. But to offer amnesty without sealing the border, we will just have the same problem repeat itself.

Herbie H.

My main point is that I don't think there is an answer. No matter what you try and propose to alleviate the problem and make things fair for all, there is an opposite reaction or point of view. Both are legitimate responses.

I do not have an answer but, I am proud to live in a country that sooo many will do anything to get here.

THE MAJORITY OF--THE PEOPLE--MUST SPEAK UP OR WE SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES IN THE MONTHS AHEAD.
The American public are kept in the dark, while secret discussions happen behind closed doors. They have stealthily drafted a path to citizenship. But then whose going to pay for all the processing? The criminal investigations in foreign countries, that do not store police records. All the examinations for contagious diseases, tuberculosis and hidden major ailment, who taxpayers will foot the bill once legalized? How about millions around the world, waiting for the harbinger of BLANKET AMNESTY to ring out--causing a mass, unstoppable rush for the defenseless border. Bring in with it more impoverished, no skills, no education, no conscious or no integrity.

Just another burden on our already overwhelmed society. Amongst this unrestrained force will come the junkies, drug dealers, skin traders, immigrant families and terrorists. With national security already compromised, we cannot even visualize the terrible danger to our population. We have already seen the escalation of--HATE CRIMES--which truthfully must be placed at our Senators, congressman and elected officers doors--as they have absolutely ignored the peoples cry for immigration enforcement. Frustration is growing on a grand scale and a few in either quarter are willing to turn to violence. The American people will not be treated as imbeciles, "telling us we are all god's children? The en-masse population of this country, live by the Rule of Law and respect it.

Unlike some of those individuals who we voted for? There is no doubt in my mind, they will be ready to shove a BLANKET AMNESTY--down our throats before this congress retires, knowing they will be highly vulnerable in the coming year, or whenever the incumbent comes up for reelection? The only way that illegal immigration occupational army will be--ERADICATED--for good, is the paramount overwhelming pressure of public awareness, bearing down on their Senators and Congressman? It will also forcibly remove the nefarious activities of criminals. THE COST TO SUPPORT THESE ILLEGAL PEOPLE IS ASTRONOMICAL! Say--YES--to e-verify! It will empty the workplace of illegal labor stealing jobs. Errors can be resolved at the Social Security office, where illegal workers wouldn't dare to go.

Tell our corrupted legislators to seal THE BORDER. TELL THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT THE BORDER FENCE AND HALT WEAKENING IMMIGRATION LAWS AND STOP PANDERING TO THE OPEN BORDERS, FREE TRADERS AND SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS. Say--NO--to any AMNESTY. Outside of this--NOTHING WILL HAPPEN--EXCEPT ANOTHER PRE-ARRANGED AMNESTY, THAT TAXPAYERS WILL GET THE BILL IN INFINITY. READ ABOUT THE IRREVERSIBLE OVERPOPULATION NIGHTMARE. Brittancus,

Your time has expired.

You are way past your shelf life.

You had control of the Congress from 1995 throuth 2007, and Bush-for-Brains was Prez from 2001 through 2009.

You failed to implement your drawbridge and moat approach to immigration policy.

So get lost. Get off the stage.

You couldn't muster the political moxie to implement your views then, so just lie back and enjoy!

Or, perhaps it would be more accurate to say, you abused the immigrant communities both "legal" and "illegal" for years.

Now the shoe is on the other foot.

You'll have to pay taxes on your factory workers, groundskeepers, maids, nannies, etc.

Won't be able to push them around any more.

That's what really upsets you, isn't it?

I think we should reason with Obama on amnesty for illigals.for sure they need to tighten up the borders but remember that if u remove the entire working population of americans workinging illigally the economy will suffer another shrinking.the better they grant them amnesty and they can pay the penalty and pay taxes for everything they do instead of rubbing the government.they are alos more who are talented but dueto illigal status they cant comeout and bring that whcih is in them. I remember american was build and become greates nation not only by its cictizen but because immigration was encouraged.and that is still the force propelling America till date. so the immigration law should pamper justice with mercy.

We are missing the point of the reform. The fact is that immigrants do try to come to the U.S. legally. The problem is the government they live in, which is corrupt, giving Visas to only those with money. If you had a poor family living in dirt, watching your kids starve, you would jump over the border, you know it and I know it. He promised a reform, we gave him most of our votes (hispanic), which do count! now he should live up to what he promised with a reform such as Bill Clinton's not a reform much like Bush. I understand the health reform is priority, but Obama should do what he said he would do.
