Jon Voight's Obama 'false prophet:' Take: The Swamp

Voight's remarks catapult him to Fox News' The O-Reilly Factor tonight.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

It may say something about the Republican Party's search for a new voice that a lot of the Weblog traffic about last night's $14.5-million GOP fundraiser today is not about the keynote speaker, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, but rather about Angelina Jolie's father.

That's Jon Voight, who stirred the Republican dinner crowd at the Washington Convention Center with some red-meat on President Barack Obama - the "false prophet.''

Voight made a name for himself in the movies alongside Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy some 40 years ago and lately has been featured as the evil - and now screen-dead - security contractor who ttried to take on the American government (the one which Kiefer Sutherland is sworn to defend as Jack Bauer on Fox TV's 24.)

He starred in Deliverance (1972) in and Coming Home (1978), winning an Academy Award for best actor that year. And of course his famous daughter, married to Brad Pitt, is doing pretty well for herself. (<strong>Angelina Jolie tops this year's Forbes 100 celebrity power list, and Obama ranks a mere 49 on that lineup.)

Voight's Obama-bashing last night has won him a spot on Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor this evening.

His politics once ran to the left - he protested the war in Vietnam as a young man. But he started steering right some time ago - never mind that he and Jane Fonda had made screen-love in that highly awarded Coming Home film about a paraplegic Vietnam veteran.

In an op-ed essay in The Washington Times last year, he wrote of regretting his anti-war protests, induced by "Marxist propaganda,'' and he endorsed former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the Republican presidential primaries last year - ""God sent an angel, '' he said at an event last year, "his name was Rudy Giuliani.''

And last night, before a crowd of 2,000 in Washington, Voight said Americans had elected "a false prophet'' as president. "We are becoming a weak nation," said Voight, suggesting that Republicans fight to free the nation from "this Obama oppression," he said.

What do you know. Someone from "Jollyqwood" with brains and common sense. The other people out there that
make a living playing grown up parts and make believe, can take a lesson from Mr. Voight. Its time to take our country back before we become a socialistic third world country, Its time to clean house on both sides of the aisle.

It doesn't matter what sector the speaker comes from now (Hollywood), it just matters if they hate enough. For years the republicans have been the party of personal politics, but lately it has taken a much more ominus tone. They don't just disagree anymore, they hate. In all my years I have never witnessed the tone and disgusting vile that comes from this party. These children throw out words like "false Prophet" as if still in kindergarten. These no longer are adults, but emotionally challenged children flailing at imaginary ghosts. Their total lack of ideas leaves them with only name calling and spewing. Look at the leaders of this party to see what hate they bring. Newt, Rush, and Palin. Willing to turn off most of America with her lies of palling around with terrorists BS. There is no depth to which these vultures will head in their guest for relevence and power. Neither will come from these tactics but try to tell them that. It is a feeding frenzy at the hate trough.

bill r.: So much drama!

Have a look at the comments at Silva's thread on Palin from yesterday to see childish and hateful.

Want childish? How about Even Thomas who says Obama is, "a god." Childish AND insane.

You people all need to wake up and stop defending your chosen parties. Both of them are selling us out. And you fools are carrying their water.

Just dropped in to see how all of the "Hope a Dopes" are doing these days. I've been too busy to follow anything lately.
.
I'm thinking of cutting down the workload and only work for Republicans from now on.
.
Hey uh, one last thing for all of you H&D's.
You realize your heading off a cliff you know.
You do know that right?
Just like Thelma and Louise since your on a Hollywood thing.

Well if Jon Voight says something it must be the absolute truth. He's a celebrity and knows a gift from God when he sees one! Is this the best the RNC can do. It's embarassing.

Regarding Voight's comment about Obama being a "false prophet"...Jon Voight is not just spouting some vitrioli by an angry Republican. It happens to be the opinion of many, conservative, moderates even some liberals. Obama is referred to as God like by so many in the mainstream media; it's downright unnerving. Voight is right when he said Obama isleading this country down the wrong path. Certainly, one can agree that Nationalizing Banks, GM and now his wanting to Nationalize Health care are not good for this country. Obama is seemingly inocuous to so many. But I find it so sad that he want to fund abortions overseas and also give a no-holds barred precident for embryonic stem cell research. How sad, indeed, it is when a President wants to pass into law the Right to an abortion (especially partial birth) at every point in a pregnancy. So, don't you see, Bill, where Voight, as impassioned his speech may be, is speaking from the heart. And his concerns for this country are very legitimate concerns.

Funny Kathy....I have noticed you see childish and insane in a Palin thread...but you lack that vision in a thread were Voight of all people along with Newt call the president a false prophet. Me thinks your vision isn't as independent as you protest. Also please tell me what is in the water of the independent that you carry? Give me a viable reason...I'll listen!

So, don't you see, Bill, where Voight, as impassioned his speech may be, is speaking from the heart.
Posted by: Gina | June 9, 2009 2:59 PM

No I don't see it at all. The only ones calling Obama prophet and messiah is the angry right. Quite frankly, show me posts or media that say this at all. I hadn't heard that until the right hadn't decided to use that in their childish talking points. Please share all that points to proving your post.

Let's see bill, in the Palin thread she is referred to as igorant dimwit, Caribou Barbie and clueless. Someone wished she would go into the wilderness and never come back (I assume they want her dead) another said she should shut up and one accused her of telling people to murder doctors. All very mature, huh?

But you're worried about false prophet? Well, Evan Thomas says Obama is like a god. Chris Mathews seems to agree. What do you think of that? And if one doesn't want what he's selling, by extension, what's wrong with false prophet? (This is one of those, you guys started it, but don't want to finish it things, you know.)

Again, party loyalty makes for some very insane arguments. Spend your time that way if that's what you want, but don't be surprised when we're all on the soup lines together.

Who will you blame then?

Right wing hypocrisy: The opinions of left wing hollywood personalities are publicly diregarded because those people are "just celebrities and nothing more". But when they are right wing hollywood personalities they are invited to formal functions to be the champions and the faces of their party. So which is it righties? Do celebrity opinions count or not??

Chris Mathews seems to agree. What do you think of that?
Posted by: Kathy | June 9, 2009 3:32 PM

I think that is totally your perception. If you wish to show me the statement from Mathews stating that...I'll concede that fact but it seems to prove to me that you are more partisan than you profess to be.

What we need is some true prophets like Reagan who left a legacy of which we can be proud!
Then there are the Bushes both of them would qualify as true prophets of the word, and the word is MONEY!
Worried about being a third world country where it's run by the rich purely for their benefit?
It's happening now.
John voight has about as much political savvy as any random poodle off the street.

Another arrogant scum from the Communistic Republican Party. Voight is a true Republican though. 100% ignorant one at that.

bill r: Evan Thomas, Editor of Newsweek, on Hardball indicated that Obama was God and he is pretty much a lefty. He said Obama was above America. Come on, be honest, don't all you lefties praise the man? Seems like your always praising him in your many posts. I'll even bet you bought one of those plates with Obama's picture on it for $19.95.

bill, here's a link to the clip from hardball:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2009/06/05/newsweek_editor_evan_thomas_obama_is_sort_of_god.html

Do you really think the media isn't completely mesmerized by Obama? Do you not see the absolute devotion? It's creepy.

Honestly, I don't care what you do or don't concede and I couldn't care less what you think of me.

I just wish people would wake up and demand a bit of honesty from ALL politicians. We're running out of time here.

Kathy......I looked up your comment on the Palin thread. This is what you wrote:Your liberal brains have you so tied in knots that you can't see just how laughable you are.
Posted by: Kathy | June 9, 2009 10:45 AM

Then you write to me:You people all need to wake up and stop defending your chosen parties. Both of them are selling us out. And you fools are carrying their water.

Posted by: Kathy | June 9, 2009 2:30 PM

Sorry...I'm not buying the above it all stand you wrote. where is that "conservative brain" comment that would seem to follow on this thread?

"Voight is right when he said Obama isleading this country down the wrong path."

The U.S. collapsed under the weight of two wars and record deficits left behind by Voight's party and yet not a peep from this has-been until now. If he was genuinely concerned about the plight of the country, he would've spoken up during the past eight years. As it stands, he can be seen as nothing more than someone desperately trying to relive his glory days of relevancy.

Give me some of whatever drugs Jon Voight is doing. He's definitely entered an alternate reality bearing no resemblance to our own.

Maybe they could get Charlton Heston.

O, wait............

One member from Hollywood voices his "opinion" about Obama (and it's not the typical limousine liberal worship) and people like billr go crazy!! Chris Matthews one said "he feels a tingle up his leg" when Obama speaks. Kathy...you are 100% correct...keep up the good work!!!! And Henry Hednem....congratulation on your graduation from eight grade!!!

Seriously folks, do you Republicans really vote by listening to any of the "stars" or party "elites" such as Rush, Voight, or Gingrich? Same goes for the Democrats on the other side. Both sides sound like little brats...my daddy can beat up your daddy. I vote for myself and hat I think is morally right...not what some party tells me is right (or left:)).

Come on, be honest, don't all you lefties praise the man?
Posted by: vla | June 9, 2009 4:11 PM

I support the man. That is my right. Just as you have the right to childishly label my support as messiah worship. I guess in your world...Bush was your messiah.

Henry,
Are you really that stupid? I mean I'm not very happy with Republicans or Democrats, but usually when we want to demean a particular philosophy or movement in a derogatory manner, we pick a word that their current beliefs would ultimately lead to. Nothing in the Republican movement could be construed as Communistic. It was the Democrats who ran openly as Socialists and who are pushing for Socialism in this country. With Socialism being essentially the flip side of Communism, I can see describing Democrats in that way, but Republicans? Really? How about fascist? If Republican ideals ran unchecked, they "might" at least run in that direction. Seriously, before describing someone as 100% ignorant, try saying something that makes sense.

I just wish people would wake up and demand a bit of honesty from ALL politicians. We're running out of time here.

Posted by: Kathy | June 9, 2009 4:14 PM

I see...so in your search for "honesty", you somehow take a comment made by Evan Thomas and judge all on that statement. Who's zooming who? Frankly, you can slam Obama all you like, I just wish you wouldn't act as though you are above all this partisan bull......your bias is obvious.

I see...... Evan Thomas says Obama

One member from Hollywood voices his "opinion" about Obama (and it's not the typical limousine liberal worship) and people like billr go crazy!!

What a flaming hypocrite!

ps...Kathy...if joe agree's with you.......I would start to worry. But of course with your independent views.....you will tell joe all about All politicians...his included. I just won't hold my breath!

Diane, you said everything that I was thinking. Voight is a clown. His real prophet left this country in the state it's in now. This great country may never bounce back from the failed leadership from the head of all lying, direct line to god, idiots.
Any wonder Voight's daughter wants nothing to do with his sorry ass.

June,
I don't think Kathy ever implied that Conservativism was selling anyone out, but instead the Republican party. The problem with the Republican party is that it is not conservative, hence the reason they are selling out their base. Thus, it would follow that one would believe republicans are not always worth listening to. As for liberals, no one but an absolute cook would believe that Democrats aren't liberal.

Swamp,
What was wrong with my post that you wouldn't post it? Certainly you don't think it was as over the top as comments you let through like "Another arrogant scum from the Communistic Republican Party" or "maybe they could get Charlton Heston. O, wait............"
What then? I had just found your site and though I would participate in the debate. Perhaps the moderators of this site are biased towards much other than left wing propaganda. I will move on to other forums that openly welcome both sides of a debate.

Actually bill, what I wrote was (in part) "Hey Joanie, irene, Carol A, & janet - show us your NOW cards! Your liberal brains have you so tied in knots that you can't see just how laughable you are."

I was addressing a group of obviously liberal women and their comments about Palin. How you equate that with supporting a party escapes me.

You seem to like to move the line around to suit yourself a lot.

Hey Joe Buck,

Get the hell back on the bus already!

(By the way, George Costanza is still waiting for his refund on your LeBaron).

How you equate that with supporting a party escapes me.

Posted by: Kathy | June 9, 2009 7:16 PM

I guess it was your silence to the ranting posts on the "conservative" side.

bill r,

Your boys polling numbers are falling like a rock...the American people have awoken from his B.S.

Hee...hee!

Paulo

Elections are a deck shuffle, both parties worship at the altar of money, all politicians rely on the ignorance of the citizens, and O-bots are only deluding themselves. Regardless, nobody in their right mind can argue one party over the other anymore without coming off as blindly sycophantic, grossly hypocritical, and hopelessly naive. This comment section more than confirms as much. How will freedom be lost? With thunderous applause. Welcome to reality.

Paulo....It must be that keen insight and perception you possess that allowed you to defend Bush all those years. Like a rock.....yep!

To Wake up. Very true my friend. After all of this mental masterbat**n about who is the best when the real truth is we have what we have and we had better get ready. But I do have to agree with the ones that think Bill is willing to bend the truth to suit him. People like him are "believers" of blind faith (good luck with that). I'm suprised that he can breath with his head where it is. Mike, get used to it. Any dissenting voice to the new world order is now met with anger, name calling and censorship.

You people are so blind..Guess What it does not nor should not matter what color he is. Obama has brought this country further down is his 6 months than any other president could think and has been on more talk shows than any other. Why is he president to talk about his dog and go on talk shows? Then when someone speeks out about it u cry whine and bash the poor man, john vought. Who R U. R u a polition? maybe a scholar? Oh, and don't froget all his non existing experiece he had befor becoming president. Oh, and quit trying to make Michelle Obama. Jakie O it is never going to happen people.
U R so blind u can't see he is going to distroy your country and u will defend him while he does it.

Remember President Lincoln's "House Divided" speech. Well just look around the hate that comes from both parties is sickening! If this continues to exist then nothing will get down on either side of the aisle. I think both parties never to look up the definition of the word Compromise and start all over again. We need people in office that will do what's good for America not what is good for their own district.

This is fundamentalist dog-whistling:

From Jeremiah: "By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed."

I think I'll wait a few years to see WHO is the false prophet here.

No wonder his daughter thinks Jon Voight is deluded.

Any dissenting voice to the new world order is now met with anger, name calling and censorship.

Where ya been son? You must have just got up. Did you just join the swamp and miss the last 8 years.....or you just bendin the truth a little to suit you?

Ps. I can breath just fine.
Pss. I can see just fine.
Psss. Do you have a point in your post? I missed it!

It's sad to see an actor who did so much good with his craft once, and who showed such caring for the plight of humanity, go down this road. It's like grieving for the loss of Jon Voigt, and all we're left with is this ... I had written something nasty here, but took it back. All we're left with is this angry actor who doesn't think well. All the worse for the rest of us.
