The Swamp

by Mark Silva and updated

For two days, established news Websites and flashy gossip sites alike have posted the slug, Maria Belen Chapur, or Maria Belen Shapur, in a shameless bid for more traffic on the Internet, without any photo to show for the link.

So it seems fitting that the site known as Bitten and Bound should lay claim to finally posting the first photographs of the Argentine lover of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. Though we really have no idea if they've got this right or not -- so credit this photo and others there to Bitten and Bound:

maria-belen-shapur.jpg

The site that revels in "the not so pretty side of Hollywood'' has stepped into the not so pretty side of politics, where some are calling for the resignation of South Carolina's governor and father of four because of the affair that lured him to Argentina on Father's Day and others are suggesting that Sanford serve out his term.

If Sanford's in a political mire, the Argentine press advises us that Sanford's mistress lives next door to the Buenos Aires Zoo.

Maria Belen Chapur, identified by the Argentine press as the woman named "Maria'' whom the governor of South Carolina got to know through a long correspondence of email that blossomed into romance, is 43, works for an international agriculture firm and is fluent in several languages.

The Columbia, S.C.-based The State's McClatchy correspondent in South America also reports that she "worked as a journalist and translator of English for about a year for the Argentine television station Canal America, according to Gabriel Bartos, then a producer with Canal America.'' She reported from New York after 9/11.

The Week also has a screen grab of that correspondent named Maria Belen Chapur reporting from New York -- and if that was 2001, could the two be one and the same?

Maria Belen II.jpg

Divorced, she lives with her teenage sons in an upscale 14-story apartment building in Buenos Aires, next to the zoo, Terra Noticias notes.

She is described as "a beautiful brunette with big eyes who plays tennis on a nearby lawn and runs every morning in her neighborhood.''

Terra Noticias reports that Belen speaks English, Portuguese and Chinese, and that the company she works for, Bunge y Born, has 25,000 employees in more than 30 countries, including 1,000 in Argentina.

Imagine First Lady of the United States!

no way. that would be a ton of aging in 8 years. I just don't buy it.

In South Carolina, adultery is a crime. Isn't it lovely how those who seek to legislate morality (Republicans) are most likely to run afoul of their own laws? I don't want laws banning adultery, yet I somehow manage to remain faithful to my wife. I don't need an escort to prevent me from being alone with women, lest I accidentally have sex with them. I know, so weird!

Are you having as much trouble keeping up with all of the Republican sex scandals as I am? Well, here's a handy flowchart to guide you along.

Can she tango?
Can HE tango?

If so I would dump the SC Gov job and move down there because ; "tango is life".

Marriage is between a man and a woman and a woman in Argentina.

"Maria" gives new meaning to "I think I'm going to send Sotomayor and her club a bunch of vacuum cleaners to help them clean up after their meetings." Instead, how about Sotomayor borrow the vacuum after Sanford and Belen get through using it.

isn't the english language Buenos Aires Herald owned by a man from Charleston South Carolina? They must have pictures.

Family values....what a farce. You don't remember Bill Clinton very well do you?

"Maria" also gives new meaning to, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Sanford agrees. As he "innocently" sought her companionship to ward off that damn "bubble."

maybe the governor should have proposed this idea to his wife.

1. Do you always copy and paste DailyKos talking points? Can’t you come up with anything original?
.
2. Before you answer those questions, however, tell me: What makes you think Republicans wrote the South Carolina’s law against adultery? Adultery has been against the law in South Carolina for so long, it is altogether possible that it was written by ante-bellum Democrats, or even by legislators from the colonial era. If you peruse South Carolina’s statutes you will even find the term “buggery” is used to describe the crime of sodomy. “Buggery” was a term coined during the reign of Henry the Eighth (1509-1547) to describe a crime at common law (also known as the “infamous crime against nature.”). Are you getting the picture yet?
.
3. Next Question: Since when does South Carolina have jurisdiction over acts of adultery committed outside the state? Do you think that a couple committing adultery in California (where it is not a crime) would be subject to punishment in South Carolina? Hint: No. As a general rule, a state can claim criminal jurisdiction only over an act or acts that: (1) occur at least in part within its physical territory, or (2) are “intended to produce and producing detrimental effects within” its boundaries. (State v. Dudley, 364 S.C. 578, 582, 614 S.E.2d 623, 625 (2005), citing Strassheim v. Daily, 221 U.S. 280, 284-285 (1911); and see S.C. Code Ann. § 1-1-10 (Supp. 2003) [“The sovereignty and jurisdiction of this State extends to all places within its bounds….”].) Thus, adultery is only a criminal offense in South Carolina when committed in South Carolina. In addition, adultery is not a crime in Argentina where all the alleged trysts occurred. (The law criminalizing adultery in Argentina was repealed in 1995.) In which case, it does not appear that Governor Sanford committed a crime in either jurisdiction.
.
4. In case you haven’t noticed, all statutes defining sex acts between consenting adults are constitutionally suspect after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Lawrence v. Texas, 539 U.S. 558 (2003). In that case, the Court held that the criminalization of private sexual practices of two consenting adults, including “intimate choices by unmarried as well as married persons,” is inconsistent with the liberty interests protected by the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. (See Id., at pp. 567, 577-578.) In Martin v. Ziherl, 269 Va. 35, 42-43, 607 S.E. 2d 367, 371 (Va. 2005), based on Lawrence, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the State’s law against fornication “is unconstitutional because by subjecting certain private sexual conduct between two consenting adults to criminal penalties it infringes on the rights of adults to ‘engage in the private conduct in the exercise of their liberty under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution.’” As the Virginia Supreme Court pointed out in Martin, Lawrence only permits state intervention in cases of sex involving minors, nonconsensual conduct, public acts, and prostitution. The broad liberty interests in private consensual sex among adults - as staked out by the courts - don’t appear to make any exception for cases involving adultery.
.
Do you agree with the Lawrence and Martin cases? If you do, then you are being a hypocrite for lambasting Governor Sanford for engaging in constitutionally protected behavior. If you don’t agree with them, you are taking a hypocritical view that narrowly goes against the official (libertine) position of the pseudo-liberal progressives of the Democratic Party. Either way, you’re being a hypocrite.
.
5. And yes, while I, too, have a hard time keeping track of the Republican sex scandals, all the Democrat sex scandals have me a little confused too. For every Republican involved in a sex scandal, there seems to be a corresponding Clinton, Reynolds, Studds, Hays, Young, Richmond, Adams, Savage, Condit, etc. See http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thegaggle/archive/2009/06/25/sex-scandals-through-the-years-both-parties-even.aspx. I suggest that you refrain from throwing rocks while you live in that glass house of yours.

Uh, the eyebrows, cheeks, and smiles are soooo different in the two pictures. That is not the same woman. The one is the video is really pretty, but that's neither here nor there.

You're still around, Johnny W Bush?
I thought by now you would have packed up all of your guns and ammo and moved to a secluded ranch in Montanta to hide-out from the black helicopters.

You are a waste of time and gravity. You’ve been plonked, and your inane blathering will be ignored from now on. That goes for you under all of your assumed aliases as well.

does the name "Kennedy" or "LBJ" come to mind as long as you are politically mud slinging you moron????

Maria Belen Chapur - You are a disgrace! Disgrace to Argentina, disgrace to your family, disgrace to your ex husband. Shameful act! May your life continue to go downhill - may you live in misery for the rest of your lonely shameful live.

If you don't take your hike in the Applachian woods but take a romp in the Argentinian bush instead you need to take a HIKE and get the hell out of office...

This whole controversy just shows how stupid Western society is. Sanford is a normal man and should marry Maria without it effecting his current marriage. Sanford can afford two wives so why should he be limited to one? Clearly he loves both women and they love him.

American Liberals support gay marriage declaring that "people in love shouldn't be denied the right to marry" so why should Sanford be denied legal status for his love? Monogamy is contrary to men's nature and throughout most of human history, males were polygamous. If gay marriage is legal, so also should be polygamy.

I think most people are troubled by Gov. Sanford, because of his hypocritical nature. He was one of the leading Republicans to wail against Bill Clinton for his affair, and he perfomed the same behaviour. For those of you who say that Clinton lied about it, well I would point out so did Sanford. Sanford was not in front of a Grand Jury, but if you will remember, Clinton admitted to the affair before the Grand Jury, rather the alleged purgery charges were of minute unimportant details about his relationship. I was a Clinton supporter. I don't think his affair came as much as a surprise to many who were his supporters. Remember, he admitted an affair while still a candidate. Affairs are still morally wrong no doubt, but these moral purists such as Ensign, Stafford and Mark Foley are viewed as hypocrites in addition to them being obviously deeply flawed human beings. John W. your legal analysis is spot on, and I agree that nothing Mark Sanford did is or was a sex crime. I have been to South Carolina. This is a very conservative state. Religious supporters are horrified that this person is still Governor. If he were a Democrat, some who post here are right that he might survive. However, McGreevey and Spitzer did in fact resign. Ensign, Vitter, Craig (Remember the gay bathroom hooker picker-upper.) and now Sanford refuse and are staying in office. I know of no Democrat who has called for his resignation, just the Republicans. Even during Clinton's dalliances no one said that he was not performing his job. In fact parts of the Starr Report reflect he was conducting business on the telephone simultaneously. Republicans have to decide, if they want to run on values issues, then they have to nominate candidates who live that life. Mitt Romney, anyone? I don't think counting the number of sex scandals, and see who is ahead is the relevant question. Rather what are your values, and do you live by them. The Mark Sanford's of the world are stealing that issue from them. I suspect the calls for his resignation are coming because they care more about the preservation of that issue then they do about this man's "Rising Star" career.

Maria Belen Chapur - May your life be beautiful and blessed-- go onward and upward forever from here. While I do not condone what happened, love is not always a choice bidden or sought, and, if this was truly love, it is a gift. However painful, however impossibly hopeless. Most of all, Maria, you are not shameful. Do not hang your head, but look the world in the eye. You either messed up (we all do) or you have been blessed with a very difficult love. Either way, may God watch over you and your sons.
