Voicing confidence in "robust'' economic growth ahead, President Barack Obama today maintained that most Americans will be protected from any tax increases.
"One of the biggest variables in this whole thing is economic growth," the president said in an interview conducted by Bloomberg News at the White House. "If we are growing at a robust rate,'' Obama said, "then we can pay for the government that we need without having to raise taxes."
Obama has pledged to cut taxes for 95 percent of working Americans while rescinding tax cuts that former President George W. Bush won for taxpayers earning more than $250,000 a year. And Obama said today that he remains confident in that.
"I'm confident that we don't have to raise taxes on ordinary working families," the president told Bloomberg Television's Al Hunt.
The president also reiterated a pledge to cut the federal budget deficit, which is forecast at $1.8 trillion this year, in half by the end of his first term. Obama said that proposals he already has made, including tax increases for Americans making over $250,000 per year, reforms in the delivery of healthcare and new government procurement rules, will help reduce the deficit. "All those things, I think, can help contribute to driving the deficit down," he said.

Its not growth until deficits are paid off.

It's just sad that if Obama doesn't reach this goal there will be heavy heavy criticism regardless of how close he gets to it or makes a noticeable difference. Obama is attempting a great healthcare reform but the buzzword "socialized healthcare" is being thrown around without actually looking at what it really is.
Here's some of today's commentary on what's going on in Obama-world:

Is it any wonder the GOP isn't just losing the youth vote, but also any group that isn't white and male? Those who already enjoy the fruits of privilege are those most hostile to "empathy" as a governmental value. They've got theirs and they want to keep it. Yet everyone else sees the value in working toward community success, rather than just focusing on the individual.
The GOP's hostility toward empathy, inherent in just about everything they do -- from starving government, to an aggressive and destructive foreign policy -- is predicated on a proud and arrogant dismissal of the wants, needs, and customs of anyone unlike them. So in their small minds Obama is a moron for trying to understand Islam, ACORN is dangerous because they engage in community organizing, tax cuts for the middle-class and poor are bad because it "redistributes wealth", and blah blah blah blah. Go down the list -- every conservative position is predicated on selfishness and lack of give-a-damn for other people.
The problem for conservatives now is that ultimately, the rest of the country disagrees with them, including its largest growing demographics. And it's hard to win elections when you are so far outside the American mainstream on such key values.
Rock on President Obama, we've got your back.

Obama remains "confident" that he will cut taxes and cut the deficit--after passing a trillion dollar spending bill, with more spending on the horizon.
He must think voters are so gullible they'll believe his utter nonsense. I'm suprised he isn't trying to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge.

Quit lying Teresa,
Obama is only spending to stimulate the economy because the Bush administration (which you supported) took a budget surplus they got from Bill Clinton and blew it by doubling our national debt in only eight short years. And they did it by giving tax cuts to the richest 2% and starting an unnecessary war, among other things.
Obama is investing in AMERICAN JOBS FOR AMERICAN PEOPLE and he's only doing it because after the eight years of Conservative deregulated cowboy trickledown crap economics trashed our economy, he had no choice.
I know that the deadender wingnuts on here already know this but you figure you're going to con people into coming back to that train wreck you call the Republican party by lying. You're not, because most people in this country aren't as stupid as the average Republican is.

Hmmmm, one loon here wrote that Obama gave the middle class the biggest tax cut ever! Please tell us middle classers what exactly was that tax cut.
Obama says he is going to lower taxes on 95 percent of the people, only raise them on 5 percent and that will cover all his spending plans. Sorry, loons, but the math does not add up!
Also, do those "tax cuts" on 95 percent of the people also include the taxes on our health benefits his sadministration is considering? Or the value added tax it is considering? Or the carbon taxes? Or the higher gas taxes? Or the higher tobacco taxes?

Diaper Boy,
If you had been paying attention during the stimulus debate, instead of crying about spending that isn't for the richest 2% or a trumped up war in Iraq, you would know that it included and passed, the largest tax cut for the poor and middle-class, EVER.
Try again, chucklehead.

There was a lady from the countryside who came to the city and checked into a hotel. Then she said
to the bellman, "I refuse to take a tiny room like this, with no window and no bed in it! You can't
treat me like a fool just because I don't travel much! I'm going to complain to the manager!" So the
bellman said very politely, "Madam,
this isn't your room. It's the elevator!"

What “robust growth”? The stock market is taking a dive right now because it dawned on everyone that it’s going to take a lot longer than expected to recover from the recession. People are going to continue to lose their jobs as businesses continue to downsize and close.
.
And on top of it all, our President is talking crazy talk, delusional stuff, about how he’s going to be able to raise taxes off of a non-existent “robust growth.” Yup, the American people can sure pick ‘em. Next we’re going to see a presidential endorsement for Kool Aid.

Sok, I don't see why you have to resort to acusing white males of being the only group that supports republicans. I think you need to get out more. I am a white male. A hard pressed Democrat. I met two girls about 3 months ago who both were black and heavily supported Bush and the GOP. I really wish people would stop being so racist. Sotoyamar is racist, you are racist, everyone loves to be racist. Why can't we just accuse indidviduals who create the problems, instead of accusing the masses. We are only feeding into their racism. Have a mind and used it please. Otherwise I will start saying anyone who is not a white male can't have intellectual thoughts, without making negative assumptions.

Dumb Dumb Janet, or is that the Deranged and Demented John E., first of all your link does not work. Second, Obama has not passed the largest tax cut ever for the poor and middle class. George W Bush and Ronald Reagan have passed two of the biggest tax cuts ever, for the poor and middle class. In fact, under Bush, the poor no longer pay a federal income tax.
But Dumb Dumb Janet, please tell those poor and middle class taxpayers how they will benefit from Obama sadministration plans to institue a tax on health care plans, a value added tax, the carbon tax, new gas taxes and new cigarette taxes?

Kathy-
I was hoping your post was satire, but I think not, so here are a few questions:
1) Who manages the budget, the President or Congress?
2) Did only the richest 2% receive tax cuts under GWB? Did revenues increase or decrease in the years following the tax cuts?
3) Which major spending bill (wars, prescriptions drugs, whatever) did the majority of democrats not support?
4) Was there more deregulation under Bill Clinton or GWB?

Sok - Although I don't agree with conservatives on many issues, I could never be a liberal because of ignorant bigots like you.
I know too many charitable-giving, environmentally sound conservatives (inlcuding my parents) to ever be as sheltered as you are. Studies continuously show that conservatives give more to charity than liberals...and it's a cause they believe in, rather than tax money spent on something they don't believe in.
Conservatives tend to believe more issues can be handled individually, locally, and in the private sector. Liberals tend to think more should be resolved centrally.

Note that all that generosity to charities from conservatives drops significantly when you leave out NFP organizations like museums, symphonies, opera companies, private clubs, and Republo-centric causes like NRA, RNC, Fundamentalist churches and foundations, etc. I'm not saying that such entities don't deserve funding or that conservatives are somehow "bad" for donating to them, but as "charities" their benefits kinda tend to work more in favor of like-minded types, who think and act conservatively. When you start looking at "charities" that make a difference between surviving and not surviving for the most disadvantaged classes, the conservative influence is not nearly as deeply felt.

No one contributes to charities for the poor and disadvantaged more than corporations and religious organizations, both well represented by conservatives.

Yeah, those angry old rich white guys who make up the GOP are always looking for a good tax write off.
Keep believing your own talking points Teddy and you and the Wingnut clowns you cheer lead for will go the way of the Whigs for sure.

BO is right - robust growth would eliminate the need for tax increases to reduce the deficit (although increased taxes would stunt economic growth). With what we have seen of BO's economic policies - we won't see any robust economic growth anytime soon.
I wonder if BO's economic policies will lead to 73 straight months of economic growth, low unemployment, low inflation, and low interest rates?
