Obama's healthcare town hall: Green Bay: The Swamp

If it's time to talk about healthcare reform, it must be time for a "town hall.''

President Barack Obama, pressing Congress for legislation making healthcare more affordable and available for more Americans this summer, will head to Green Bay, Wis., on Thursday for a town-hall styled appearance.

Just as the president used the campaign-styled town halls in Indiana and Florida to press his economic-stimulus earlier this year, Obama plans to call in some of his political capital for the fight over health care -- he carried Wisconsin last year by 13 percentage points, and the latest Gallup Polls have showed his job-approval holding at just over 60 percent.

The president will take the stage at a high school in Green Bay on Thursday afternoon to take and take questions from an audience which the White House says will be "randomly chosen'' from people seeking tickets at a Website or calling a phone line - those lines were open on Monday, the Web-site still open until noon today.

This push for healthcare reform also comes in the midst of a ramped up effort to create and save jobs with the spending authorized by the economic stimulus bill - of the $787 billion authorized in February, the White House says $135 billion has been "obligated'' for specific projects, but the "spend-out is closer to $44 billion,'' according to Jared Bernstein, the vice president's chief economist.

"The president has always talked about health care as a very concrete matter of economics,'' said Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, speaking of the Green Bay town hall. "The rising cost of health care certainly is for families and small businesses.

"Whether or not it's the focus, I'm not sure,'' he said of Thursday's event "But again, I think when we're talking about health care writ large, there are -- there isn't one thing or only one thing that you can focus on.

"Obviously there are the incredible proliferation of costs, as I've said, for families and small businesses, but also, how are we going to change the way and make the delivery of health care more efficient so that a country that spends more per capita on health care doesn't find itself lagging in the ways that it does.''

Well Siliva, I know you love Obama's town hall campaign moments (questions asked by selected Obamablots so the Prez. can spew forth WH talking points, memorized, thus no need for a TelePrompTer), along with the MSM photo opts. Most of the folks see through this charade and note that the slobbering questioners (along with the adoring press, thrilled to catch a ride on AF One) never have a relevant follow up question to counter the often obfuscating, disingenuous, or outright misleading answers. Yes Mark, then we will see another article on how well he performed and you will adoringly accept all the propaganda without question. Maybe Obama will explain how his lackluster stimulus will now created 600K jobs when they fail to even explain the spending for them or maybe how he arrives at this new fantasy figure of "jobs saved" (no one seems to know how to this was calculated or measured). Oh, and Mark, will we see a article on Gov. Palin's exoneration on ALL 14 ethics charges against her? You so graciously covered them for us, so we were well informed about her purported deficiencies, we would like to see why they were baseless and dismissed. Always a Swamper and looking out for you when the tide turns!

I'm all for a national health care insurance program with a few provisions.

1. It has to be self-sufficient, absolutely no tax dollars can be used to subsidize it. If the standard of care needs to be lowered, so be it.

2. Health care facilities can choose to allow patients covered under the government plan. If the wiz-bang plan pays in 120 days at 60% of the going rate for care, the provider can just opt out.

If, as I suspect, government health care "insurance" is going to be nothing more than free health care for dead-beats.

I use the word "free" facetiously, it really means that those that have earned their money will be forced to foot the bill for those that have not in return for a vote.

Does this guy ever stay in Washington to, oh I don't know, govern?

Old Russian saying...You can tell same lie 1000 time but not change truth!

Difference between USSR Communist media and USA "mainstream media"

In Russia government make media say what they want - even if lie.
In USA "mainstream media" try make government what they want - even if lie..
.....eventually they become same thing?!

It very hard to have credibility to reform health care when one can not perform such a simple medical task as producing his own birth certificate.

Therefore, I Igor produce Obama Birth Certificate at www.igormaro.org

Compare Obama Care vs Igor Care at Obama vs Igor Care

This president cannot live outside the "campaign mode". His intentions to rule the world, single handedly will eventually bring him down to mere "human" status and his aura and charm will be no more exciting than the next political piggy's.

Do you support Public/Universal Health Care?

That's right O'Bozo. Those cheesehead packer fans will believe anything!!

The Obama Healthcare will be an excellent plan for the Democrats to feast on their greedy political donations.

There is no hope for this to be done reasonably. No hope.

We have abandoned the concept of personal responsibility and without that it cannot work.

It didn't work in the Soviet Ubion and it won't work here.

Obama is still stuck in a school class where they teach political theory and this is his experiment. Oops.

Tim, you're giving him too much credit. No one thinks this will work - it's absurd.

The plan is not for it to work, it's about power & cash. If the feds control healthcare, they control everything.

Want a Twinkie? $5 tax - please pay up. A Coke? $6 please. Dare to smoke? You'll need another job to pay for that.

They'll be coming into our homes to check if we live a "healthy lifestyle." It's mind-boggling to think what they might come up with.

If one ever needed to find a good sampling of self-centered paranoid personalities, you need look no further than right here. The Swamp abides.

Not that you'd read about it in the Trib, but the Editorial page in today's Wall Street Journal has an article by a Canadian Doctor who details the "wonders" of a single payer system. Interesting how Canada is moving to less government interference at the same time that Obama is trying to take over the health insurance sector in the US.
The only way to contain costs in a government run system is to ration care. Oregon already did this with its Medicaid system and the state had to cut down on the number of approved procedures.
The way out of this mess? End the employer provided health insurance and have people buy, and own, their health insurance policies.

What, no mention of Michelle accompanying him to go shopping and sight-seeing and for a restaurant date in Green Bay? How will Obama while away the time after he has revealed his plan to destroy the world's best health care system? Another "success" story like the ruined banks and auto industry?

Maybe we could come up with some creative ways of paying for it....Like the republicans did for Iraq war. I believe their answer was oil revenue. Good call there.

The people who have already commented on this article wouldn't support an Obama plan if it was the best plan in the history of the world. If it has anything to do with Obama, they will be against it.

The current system FAILED. Some of you out there still don't get it. It has failed all of you hardworking people who pay extra so the deadbeats can have free healthcare. It has failed the working poor who make too much to qualify for medicaid and too little to get a meaningful insurance plan. It has failed the physicans who just want to save lives but instead make medical decisions based on money.

All of you people complain complain complain, but why don't you step up and actually DO SOMETHING to make the healthcare system better. Blogging is getting us nowhere.

Green Bay only has a population of 105,000 people, is Obama going to come to Waukegan next?

new book coming out this summer about Obama.

Sylvia wrote -- . . . destroy the world's best health care system?

********************************

How do you figure we have the world's best health care system if the United States was ranked #37 in 2000 by the World Health Organization, below countries like Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Iceland and Chile? Or a more recent ranking (2007) of next to last when compared to Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom?

In 2007 there were almost 46 million people without health coverage. That number has obviously skyrocketed in recent times. Health insurance is the number one expense of small businesses - which is why so many companies have to decide between insuring their employees or closing down.

Best in the world? Time for a reality check.

I am 60 years old. I have worked since I was 18. Last year my art teaching position was deleted. I can afford my house, car, and food for myself and my pets. I can't afford health insurance. I have a Master's degree but can't find a job. Any suggestions on what I should cut back on? I am an Obama volounteer.

billr, are you sitting on those oil reserves today? I find it funny (NOT) that you and so many others can't wrap your heads around the war for oil philosophy.

I mean, all that oil has to be somewhere doesn't it? We fought in Iraq for oil right? Who's got the keys to the tanker today? you billy or maybe Donny Fitz or did Barry O give the keys to someone else today?

Maybe little george has the oil tanker hidden down in Texas somewhere? Oh yeah, that must be the truth huh? George has the oil hidden for himself and his cronies.

Oh, I get it. It was the oil revenue? So where's that at? I must believe the democrats have stolen it and are planning to use it for more social programs for the lazy and government dependant liberal crowd. Yeah that's the ticket! Nowwe know wher eall the money is coming from to pay for all the little extra's coming out of the Obama administration - it's the Oil Revenue from Iraq!

Darn, little George actually did something good! I'll never complain about George again, for sure!

President Teleprompter will spew more carbon into the air as he continues to campaign but provides no programs that work. Get back to Washington and try to come up with something that will work.

And all you brainiacs are for the windfall profits by the Insurance company's?

There are CEO's out there taking down billions of dollars for there new Yachts.

The US is 37th in healthcare and you people want to criticize a plan that has not been adopted yet. What a bunch of PUKES!

You repubs are easily fooled. Hey guess what. The working class guy is not included in the Crony Capitalist Reagonomic plan that we are still following.

I think you are gravely mistaken if you believe anyone is presently happy with the state of the health care industry. No one, but no one, likes rising prices, fewer services, insurance companies that make one want to scream, cry or pull one’s hair, or doctors who muscle patients into bad decisions to protect their bottom line, like so many loan shark enforcers.
.
However, no one wants to rush off a cliff, lemming-like, into disaster either. There are some of us who are truly skeptical of having a large, government operated health care system, and not without reason. In the first place, some of us haven’t forgotten the nature of our federal system of government, and that a nationalized health care system is not in accord with it. In the second place, the federal government has a dismal record when it comes to developing responsible programs. We are currently staring at two massive spending programs that are going to go bankrupt within our lifetimes owing to government mismanagement. The government is supposed to be a “trustee” for these programs. As far as I know, trustees who operate like the government has acted toward Social Security and Medicare go to jail. In the third place, the crack of doom hasn’t sounded, thus compelling us to rush toward the belly feathers of mother government for protection. There are alternatives to the kinds of massive government programs being suggested, some of which have never been tried before. It might behoove us to try the alternatives before opting for the most expensive, intrusive or controlling system of health care. That is, if you value your freedom at all. (I value mine, and don’t care to have the government tell me when or with whom to contract, or how to live my life.)
.
But, first of all, we would like to see the plans. We keep hearing about the plans, but we don’t know what’s going into them. No one has floated the drafts from the committees that deal with these issues. I think we have a right to see them before our representatives give their assent to some program that we might view as foolish, frail or onerous. In the event the plans are bad, we should be able to protest to our representatives regarding what we view as wrong. Their subsequent votes will then inform us just how much or little our representatives stand for our interests. But, until that happens, rushing ahead with our assent would be just as foolish as listening to the chicken-little-like claims of people like you. Furthermore, you have absolutely no reason to support or agitate for any of these plans until you have read the fine print too.

That other Ging from Georgia was on CSpan this morning, spreading disinformation.

Like:

There really are not that many uninsured people in America.

Most of them are people making over $50 K per year who "choose" not to take out insurance.

Others are "illegal aliens" who "aren't eligible" for insurance.

What crap! and no one challenged him on these bald faced lies.

So he and his insurance co. contributors may pull it off.

Folk over 65 are not too upset about the misinformation campaign because they already have coverage of a sort.

But folk who have to pay out $800 per month to Blue Cross and who have never had any claim other than for routine tests, know this Ging like the other Ging from Georgia is full of prunes.

For fun, look at the Blue Cross Blue Shield building being topped out on the northern edge of Grant Park in Chicago.

First 30 floors were built about 8 years ago, and now the rest is going up..

Probably a nice little terrace there for the Executive Dining Room.

Would you rather have B lue Cross waste your premium dollars, or the government?

That's a difficult question. One thing I know for sure, however:

No administrator of Social Security or Medicare in the government is paid a salary in excess of 6 figures.

Not so in the health insurance "industry".

Springfield, NO we did NOT fight in Iraq for oil. Let's see, Clinton didn't take Bin Laden serious and the maniac masterminded the attack on 9-1-1 or did you forget already?
Saddam was back to playing his game about not allowing the UN to search in certain areas, THEREBY insinuating that he had weapons of mass destruction. In fact, our solders stumbled upon two fighter jets that Saddam had burred in the desert. Now, if he can have two fighter jets buried in the sand, what else do you think he could have had buried? We didn't sneak in Iraq either. We confronted Saddam, gave him and his family a chance to leave Iraq so the UN could do their jobs. Or what did you want to happen? Wait and see if Saddam's terrorists would follow Bin Ladens lead and attack us? If that had happened, then you all would blame Bush and demand his arrest.
