RIYADH -- President Barack Obama landed today in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which he saluted as "the place where Islam began,'' for the start of a long-planned trip intended to improve the tattered U.S. relationship with the Muslim world.
The centerpiece of the president's trip will be a speech Thursday in Cairo, billed as an address to the Muslim world, in which advisors say Obama will transmit a message based on shared roots, common experience and mutual respect.
Yet, even as he landed, the Arab-language Al Jazeera satellite television station was airing an audiotape attributed to Osama bin Laden accusing Obama of inflaming hatred with stepped-up U.S. and Pakistani assaults against militants inside Pakistan.
The president will deliver his long-promised address to the Muslim world from the campus of Cairo University in Egypt on Thursday. With an overnight stay at King Abdullah's ranch outside Riyadh, the president was holding private meetings today with the king on Mideast peace negotiations, regional security and energy issues.
"I thought it was very important to come to the place where Islam began and to seek his majesty's counsel and to discuss with him many of the issues that we confront here in the Middle East,'' Obama said before a private meeting with the king. "I am confident that working together the United States and Saudi Arabia can make progress on a whole host of issues and mutual interests.''
King Abdullah, speaking through a translator, said: "The historic and strategic ties between our two countries... go back to the time of the meeting between the late Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the late King Abdul-Aziz.'' He voiced good will toward "the friendly American people who are represented by a distinguished man who deserves to be in this position.''
The Cairo address, which will be televised and distributed at websites in an attempt to reach the broadest possible international audience, marks a formal attempt by the president to reengage the United States with the leaders and people of Arab nations, many alienated by the past administration's prosecution of the war in Iraq and its practices in the detainment, treatment and interrogation of suspected terrorists in the region and at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
At the same time, the White House readily concedes that no single address can cause a sea change in U.S. relations with a region where polling shows that a majority of those living in Arab nations and territories hold a dim view of the American administration, particularly in the Palestinian territories.
"The president has always looked at this as a process, not as a single point in time,'' Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said on the eve of the president's journey. "If you look at the efforts that the administration has undertaken thus far in terms of outreach -- whether it's in interviews, whether it's speeches, the speech in Turkey -- this is about resetting our relationship with the Muslim world.... I think you'll hear the president say we don't expect that everything will change after one speech. I think it will take a sustained effort, and that's what the president is in for.''
But the aim of the president's previous tour of Turkey, the Cairo address and continuing diplomatic initiatives in the region is clear, the White House spokesman says:
"What is important is that we demonstrate that the United States wants to pursue a different relationship and ensure that Muslims around the world understand the message of the United States: That we share common hopes and dreams and that we can work together to fulfill those hopes and dreams ... separating that from the extremism and extremists that wish to do us harm.''
Following a red-carpeted arrival ceremony with the king at the royal airport terminal, Obama traveled by motorcade to the farm where Abdullah keeps a stable of more than 100 stallions.
Arriving at the king's ranch, Obama was greeted by Saudi guards astride horses. Inside a palatial meeting room, the king and president sat side by side in armchairs beneath a portrait of King Abdul Aziz al Saud. In chairs lining the walls, a long row of Saudi ministers in white robes sat opposite their American counterparts.
As Obama was landing in Riyadh, an audio-taped message attributed to Osama bin Laden was airing on Al Jazeera contending that Obama has inflamed hatred toward by the United States by ordering Pakistan to crack down on militants in the Swat Valley and block Islamic law.
The purported message from the fugitive al Qeada leader claims that U.S. pressure led to a campaign of "killing, fighting, bombing and destruction" that prompted the exodus of a million Muslims from the valley in northwest Pakistan.
The message was broadcast by Al-Jazeera Television at almost the same moment that Obama landed in Saudi Arabia at the start of a tour aimed at repairing frayed U.S. relations with the Muslim world.
in the tape, the speaker accuses Obama of ordering Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to "prevent the people of Swat from implementing the Shari'a law by fighting and killing them through bombings and destruction. This has led one million Muslims, elderly people, women and children, to flee their homes and villages and live in tents after they'd been living with dignity in their homes.
""This simply means that Obama and his administration have planted new seeds of hatred and vengeance towards America," the message, translated into English, continues. "The number of these seeds equates that of those who have suffered and been made homeless in the Swat valley and the tribal areas in northern and southern Waziristan as well as those who sympathize with them.
"In this manner,'' the speaker says, "Obama appears to have followed the same path taken by his predecessor, in creating more enmity towards Muslims, and adding on to the fighting enemies, thus paving the way for new long wars. Let the American people prepare to continue harvesting what their White House leaders grow, in the years and decades to come. ''
Bin Laden, son of a wealthy Saudi family in the construction business, was evicted from Saudi Arabia years ago, long before the al Qaeda attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Saudi Arabia is a key part of Obama's plan for Mideast peace. The White House has been pressuring Israel to give ground on the volatile issue of Jewish settlements in Palestinian territory, planning to use that to coax concessions from moderate Arab states.
Progress on Mideast peace talks, in turn, is crucial to Obama's goal of improving U.S. standing among Muslims. The American image has been tarnished by the invasion of Iraq and U.S. detainee policies but also has suffered from perceptions that U.S. administrations unquestioningly back Israeli interests against Palestinians. Obama has altered U.S. policy on Iraq and detention practices but wants to show progress on Mideast peace.
After Thursday's address in Cairo, Obama plans to travel to Europe for events and appearances commemorating Allied efforts in World War II. The president will visit the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald, in Germany, and mark the 65th anniversary of the allied landing at Normandy, in France.
Obama last week called the speech in Cairo an opportunity to deliver a "broader message about how the United States can change for the better" its relationship with the Muslim world.
"That will require, I think, a recognition on both the part of the United States as well as many majority-Muslim countries about each other, a better sense of understanding and the possibilities of achieving common ground," he said.
Polls in Arab nations show that approval of the U.S. leadership, though still generally low, has risen in Egypt and seven other countries since Obama took office.
Obama's address at Cairo University will be jointly hosted by Al-Azhar University, an ancient center of Islamic scholarship.
He plans to recognize contributions of Middle Eastern scholars to science, mathematics and technology and cite the millions of Muslims who live and practice their faith in the U.S. He also will address the subject of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Yes, great Middle Eastern inventions like the IED.
One goes glossy eyed at the great middle eastern car factories, and electronics innovation.
When I think of rational thought, and rational responses, to things like females out with another man with no veil: I think...WOW...those Middle Easterns (Read Muslims) are so wise and smart.
Good Luck Hussein Obama!
We can't wait to hear your Teleprompter Speech.
Allah is Great!

Did they keep the Bow from the cameras this time?

For goodness sake, don't let him bow. If he does, we'll never hear the end of it!!!!!!

I'll bet this time he bowed to the king out of sight of the cameras.

I think it's a brilliant move, both in repairing our image and polictically. He's shown the ability to get things done, regardless if you agree with the course of action.

Arab Nations and Muslim Nations are not synonymous. As usual we recieve Obama administration propaganda instead of truthful and objective news.
His recorded tape sent to Iran earlier was not well recieved and THAT is the population that needs to be turned. Our president is preaching to the choir and expecting us to believe he's turning the hearts and souls of the hateful into American loving, gracious and empathetic Obama believers.

This trip will mark a new beginning in U.S./Mideast relations. It is Obama first chance to undo the disaster that was the Bush regime.

Here is the Obama regime starting to undo all the good done by President Bush.
Bowing, kissing up and generally looking weak. Some like that, but some live in a fantasy world too.

Our energy policy is go to Saudi Arabia and hold hands with the king.
George Bush did this last year and the media threw him under the bus.

Where is the love from the terrorists?
NBC told me if we elected Obama, they would love us? Did they and Obama lie?
Go ahead and make excuses for them, then go back and hide your head in the sand.

This oil thug "monarch" should be the one on bended knee.
That gold leaf woven into the red carpet is a nice touch.
Your petrodollars at work.

This is a joke right?
"NBC told me if we elected Obama, they would love us? Did they and Obama lie?"
No one said that terrorist would love us. Where id you get that from?
It is important to show good will to all nations.

Did the King have a growth spurt? Didn't Gibbs say the reason Obama sort of leaned over was because the King was shorter? I'm not seeing such a difference in their height in the picture here.

I'm still trying to recover from Obama saying N. Korea should have nuclear power as long as it's for energy. guess the missiles were just to harness electric from a thunderstorm.. wonder what he will say the about the Mid East.. well I am sure he will suck up and lick the boots of the rulers and make AMERICA look weak.. oh wait he already did that.. but while we watch Obama, Cuba is being welcomed back into the fold..

Well the ursrper currently rsiding in the White house says were not a "Christian" nation, despite 70% citizens claiming such identiy, but rather we are "one of the worlds largest Muslim nations" with only 2% of citizens claiming such identity.
He is a TOTAL fraud!

I go glossy eyed every time I see the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima. Wonderful invention. Advanced civilization 11 miles into the air. Built on the backs of contributions to science and math in the East, furthered by the West, returned back into the East.
.
Can not lie. I like Disney's approach to this--

again ..why is Obama in Saudi Arabia?

Isn't Israel the only--or one of two--Middle-East nations to refuse to sign the non-proliferation agreement? Huge problem. Why do we continue to heavily support a nation that refuses to sign the non-proliferation agreement? I have a problem with Emanuel as Obama's right hand man. Didn't Emanuel "volunteer" in the Israel military as a mechanic? But, as in all military--aren't all those active there soldiers first? What kind of info and "public opinion" is Emanuel funneling to Obama since Obama seems OK with the fact that Israel can tell the world to go to hell on non-proliferation? Land from Palestine was ripped away from them in order to form a homeland--yes--that word "homeland" for the Jewish people. And then, the Jewish people get greedy and steal MORE land from Palestine for more Jewish settlements. Some nations won't buy products from the stolen Jewish settlement lands because they know that the situation is very wrong. Israel should be sending all citizens of Palestine thank you cards for the land that was the Palestinians--that was taken away and is now Israel. Instead, the Jewish people kick the Palestinians in the teeth. Why is Obama blind? No more American fighting or support in the Middle-East that makes Israel happy--or reinforces them to be bigger thieves and bullies. Really don't like Emanuel whispering in Obama's ear.

if this is such an important speech, don't you think it would helpful if the article included WHEN the speech was to be made? "Thursday" is fairly vague - a specific time would be nice...
