As President Barack Obama prepares today for his first, formal daytime news conference - and publicly pitch his plans for healthcare reform as essential to the nation's economic health - a new poll shows that barely half of all Americans surveyed are confident that Obama's stimulus spending will boost the economy

This poll - a survey run by The Washington Post and ABC News - like other recent national media-run polls, finds that the president's overall job approval remains high - 65 percent in this survey, and 56 to 63 percent in other TV network- and newspaper-sponsored polls last week.

Yet, like the others, it also reveals a gap between the public's overall view of the president and its opinion on how he is handling some of the nation's biggest problems. The president will face the press in a West Wing news conference at 12:30 pm EDT today (It is being moved inside from the Rose Garden because of threatening summer weather in Washington.).

Disapproval of the president's plans for healthcare has risen from 29 to 39 percent, and overall support for his plans stands at just 53 percent in the Post/ABC poll, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell's office is pointing out this morning. McConnell (R-Ky.) accuses the Democrats of another "rush and spend'' strategy on healthcare, compounding congressional action on the economic stimulus.

McConnell's office also notes that approval of Obama's healthcare plans has run at just 44 percent in a New York Times/CBS News poll that found the president's overall approval standing at 63 percent. And a similar gap was shown in a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll that put overall approval at 56.

Three months into the enactment of a $787-billion economic stimulus aimed at creating or saving about 3 million jobs, the Post/ABC poll found that only 52 percent of those surveyed believe it will succeed in restoring the economy, compared with 59 percent who said so two months ago.

"The falloff in confidence has been sharpest in the hard-hit Midwest, where fewer than half now see the government spending as succeeding,'' the Post reports of a region particularly hard hit by manufacturing plant closings. "In April, six in 10 Midwesterners said the federal program had worked or would do so.

"The tempered public outlook has not significantly affected Obama's overall approval rating, which at 65 percent in the new survey outpaces the ratings of Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton at similar points in their tenures,'' the Post notes. "But new questions about the stimulus package's effectiveness underscore the stakes for the Obama administration in the months ahead as it pushes for big reforms in health care and energy at the same time it attempts to revive the nation's flagging economy. ''

As in the other surveys, public support for the president's handling of foreign affairs stands higher than his grade on a number of domestic issues such as healthcare and the economy. The president will travel next week to the Group of Eight summit in Europe and also make a trip to Ghana, which will mark his fifth international journey during his first six months in office.

This really isn't surprising at all. There really is no quick fix to the mess the republicans left behind and it is only a matter of time before people grow restless. In the meantime, they have devoted an entire cable news? channel to mislead, frighten, and lie to the people to bring about their wish for failure. As healthcare is one of the nations biggest problem, the republicans have once again put out disinformation to deprive Americans of coverage. In this day it isn't hard to play on the fears of people even if you don't offer any plan what so ever of your own. Party first!

With more than 50% of the country not liking the President's health plan, isn't it time to go back to the drawing board?. There are many ways to cut down on medical costs, without needing to revamp the entire system. I believe its time to listen to the people not the bureaucrats, and special interests.

The bottom line is that the president's approval rating is at 65 percent. That's all that matters.

The Party of No is working overtime, with their fear and smear machine !! We saw how despicable it can get, in the last presidential election. Since then, they have pulled out, even more reprehensible, ridiculous lies, distortions and labels. They will stop at nothing. They are being financed by an oligarchy, that feels its greed being cut off, its very bloodlines. The Corporations have their marching orders: Throw that money out there, that money that they collected, gouging the public. Get those lies and distortions and character-assassinators out there !! Smear the President and Vice-President. Do whatever you have to do to save our bacon !! Forget the People !! They don't count !! There are more, where they came from !!
America has not seen the likes of this Corporate onslaught, ever. They know, if they don't lie and confuse the voters, they will lose their " royal " status and have to pay their fair share. For far too long, the people have payed the Corporations' bills !! It is now time for the Corporations to do something for America, instead of bullying, confusing, and robbing us, the people !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

"""There really is no quick fix to the mess the republicans left behind and it is only a matter of time before people grow restless."""

That's an inane comment.

The Democrats, led by Obama, with little to no Republican support, forged a head with nearly $800 billion in "economic stimulus"----not to mention the billions of dollars in other spending on bailouts, etc, AFTER Bush left office.

Obama has bought this economy and its results, for better or worse, that the stimulus, which we were told was ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and had to be done RIGHT NOW.

Please tell me that the Democrats plan is a lot more than "Let's spend all this money, but no matter what happens its always Bush's fault".....please tell me that it's more than that.

John G...have you been asleep? Don't you remember the republican president saying we need 800 billion immediately for the credit problem? The housing bubble burst in late 2005, early 2006. That's when the problem began. I know that the republicans run everything in a knee jerk fashion, but the economy doesn't.

JohnG is right, without the stimulus the economy would be perfect now. Unemployment would have plummeted to 3%, the Dow would be at 15,000, economic growth would be off the charts. Our ecomomic problems are wholly and completely Obama's fault. Bush is faultless. (anyway all the economic problems durring the Bush Administration were Clinton's fault)

billy you are so blind to facts. You take that made up fiction from your daily kooks blogs, repackage the garbage, and spew it out like old swiss cheese that is mostly holes. Just one example, explain to us "redneck" and conservatives why they are now going to tax private healthcare benefits (remember no new taxes under 250K, that went under the bus, along with the 95% tax break) and this "grandfathering" collective bargain (aka; unions) agreements concerning healthcare benefits so they are tax exempt from these new (remember; "McCain will tax your benefits, not me") taxes. Geezz, how does that work for sharing the burden. Or, where is tort reform concerning healthcare. Gosh, no money to be saved there, can't deny those trial lawyers. And those 3.5 million jobs? Must be still tied up in those shovel ready stimulus dollars that the watchdog, Biden, said are being wasted. Well, at least he save 150K jobs, huh! Tell us how that is measured? Just another Obama/billy fantasy. Could go on and on, but this poll is bogus since mostly Dems were polled and that makes it actually worse. Same ole' MSM hype, covering for there man. Wise up dude, grab your tea bags and join the revolution, the country is littered with roadkill from the Obama bus. If it has not hit you yet it is barreling down soon or are you one of those non-meddling types.

Dems in Congress really need to mount a mean counterattack on "the party of No".

Replicans seem to think the economy will "bounce back" no matter what, and they can just sit back with the broomstick and try to stick it in Obama's bicycle wheels.

He obviously is not into that sort of attack.

Maybe this is an area where Biden's famous mouth could be employed to good effect.

Nix that Rose Garden stuff. It's been moved inside because of the humidity. He's got to keep the media comfortable so they will continue to love him. Wonder if the Fox Reporter will have to stand outside?

I agree with most except they know darn well the economy won't bounce back quickly but that is the card they play.

bubba.....It seems we just have to agree that we disagree. If you have a plan to provide healthcare to the "millions" of Americans that do not have it, please share. It is easy to tear down ideas, just a little harder to build them. The republicans stopped it in the 90's, had complete control of government for 6 years and not a peep about fixing it. Like Obama....I'm all ears!

The "Stimulus" plan is not going to stimulate anything. If you break it down, it is more geared toward alleviating the harshness of the recession, and bailing out the already existing debt obligations of the states (schools, Medicaid, unemployment, etc.). Funding for infrastructure, which I thought the plan was sold on, is secondary. I'm not necessarily opposed to the latter type of investing, but any jobs created are as temporary as the funding.

No one has really connected the dots on how temporary government spending is going to create sustainable recovery or growth. My suspicion is that the federal government believes that if they dump a bunch of borrowed money into the economy, either through tax cuts or direct spending, it will somehow solve our problems. I don't think it's that simple. I think we are in a severe recession, but will recover from it.

There was no historical precedent for Obama's silly fear mongering that if we don’t act right this second, we will never recover. The real issues were how fast we will recover, should we spend money to alleviate the harshness of the recession, is the spending responsible, and does the cost/benefit analysis weigh in favor of it. These are the debates we should have been having, but instead had the "we have to act right now!!", followed by a partisan spending bill that nobody read jammed down our throats. Operate at the impulse level, so the stupid can participate. What, you don’t like jobs? Change indeed.

"There was no historical precedent for Obama's silly fear mongering that if we don’t act right this second, we will never recover."

Sure there was Herbie. There was Hank Paulson's silly fear mongering that if we didn't pass the TARP right this second that our entire financial system would collapse. There was John McCain's silly fear mongering that if he didn't "suspend" his campaign and rush back to Washington that our entire financial system would collapse.

President Bush signed into law Friday a historic $700 billion bailout of the financial services industry, promising to move swiftly to use his sweeping new authority to unlock frozen credit markets to get the economy moving again.

“It’s complicated, and we’re going to make sure whatever we do is done in a deliberative fashion,” Bush told reporters after he signed the bill as soon as he got it from the House, which passed the measure after a topsy-turvy week of legislative victories, defeats and power plays.

But he promised to get the ball rolling quickly, because the authority is “essential to helping Ameica’s economy weather the financial crisis.”

Show of hands -- how many of you who are AGAINST the health care plan actually HAVE health insurance? My guess is that a large majority -- if not all -- have decent, affordable health insurance. You are the ones who seem to forget that the U.S. ranks about #37 in terms of health care. I'm guessing you've never had to choose between purchasing a prescription and putting food on the table. When something like a prescription for migraines can run more than $200 for 9 pills, there is definitely something wrong here.

Nel, I meant precedent for the economy not recovering, not precedent for someone else talking the same nonsense.

The personality aura is starting to fade. as much as the MSM tries to keep it alive, and BO is starting to be judged by his policies and his results - as it s/b.

As far as the MSM, there are still some comparing him to Jesus.

One other thing about BO, he is the first democratic presidential canidate since Carter in 1976 that rec'd over 50% of the vote. Bo did a good job getting independents to cross-over. His sagging poll numbers are among the independents.

As for you flatliners that think you own the independents and the country has just shifted to center-left, I have a little news. In 2006 & 2008, you did nothing but lease those voters and they will return back to their home which is center-right.
