Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Barack Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court, holds substantial public support, according to one new survey.

With the Senate Judiciary Committee preparing for confirmation hearings in two weeks, a Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that most Americans view Sotomayor as "about right'' ideologicially, with 62 percent supporting her confirmation.

Sotomayor, poised to become the first Hispanic justice and just the third woman on the high court, draws support equally among men and women, the poll finds.

While most Republicans view Sotomayor as "too liberall,'' overall, 55 percent of Americans surveyed see the appellate judge from New York as about right on a liberal-to-conservative scale. About one in four view her as too liberal.

"The majority of Americans who want the court to retain the landmark abortion decision Roe v. Wade has remained remarkably steady over the years, and currently six in 10 Americans would want the new justice to vote to uphold it,'' the Post notes. Sotomayor's stance on this, however, has been difficult for observers to fathom, based on her decade and a half on federal benches.

I really would like to know when and where these "polls" take place and how random are they?. I've been on this planet for 70 years have had one phone call, or stopped in any mall. It wold give one the impression that maybe these things are rigged.

I dont think that the fact that you have never taken a poll means that they are "rigged." Polling has been around for a long time and tends to be fairly accurate. There are many companies, universities, and news organizations that do this. If they were consistently innacurate since they were "rigged" the results would likely be ignored. While in college I worked part time doing these calls. The vast majority of calls were never answered, or people declined to take the survey. Perhaps someone did call you, but you didnt answer or you assumed that they were trying to sell something and chose not to be a part of the survey.

Judge Sotomayor deserves recognition for her dedication to the law of this land. She has made it her life's work and for that she has my support. That she is a Latina, is important, for only one reason, one very important reason. Now, other Hispanic-Americans can see that our institutions, appreciate what other communities have given America !! This nomination, by President Obama, is no small matter. It states, categorically, that America will no longer be a " whites only " governed nation. I loudly say, it is about time !! What has taken us so long !!? We will be that much greater a nation, because of our liberality, when it comes to opening our doors, to all of our citizens. Our Founding Ancestors are enjoying this moment, in their " baby's " life. She is growing up and reaching for her full maturity !! Now, if we could just get those stubborn members of the Party of No, to join us, in the Party of Yes, we will become an even greater nation. At the moment, though, that may be asking too much, but one can always dream, can't one !!?
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.
