Yet still overwhelmingly negative: Gallup's read of the American mood.

Only slightly more than one-third of Americans surveyed say they are satisfied with the way things are going in the country - a measure that has "ebbed and flowed'' over the past month, settling into the mood of about a month ago.

The Gallup Poll's daily tracking finds 64 percent of those surveyed dissatisfied with the way things are going - though this still is "much improved'' from the mood of the American public at the start of the year.

The level of satisfaction is "more than double what it was when President Obama took office,'' Gallup notes.

"It is noteworthy that satisfaction has leveled off over the past month, rather than continuing the trend of positive improvement recorded from March through early May,'' Gallup adds.

The all-time high on this measure in Gallup's 30-year history of asking the question was 71 percent in February 1999, near the end of former President Bill Clinton's final term.

The all-time low was 7 percent last October, near the end of former President George W. Bush's final term.

The Republican party is not coming back. Period. Don’t believe it. They own what is happening to this country right now. Sure the lunatic fringe 24% that makes up what's left of the Republican base will blame everyone under the sun but themselves, but who cares? No one is listening to them anymore and it’s insanity like Steele saying “work is not a job”. WTF is that?!? That’s not even remotely convincing to anyone who isn’t the one spouting it.

The Republicans own the disaster that Obama is currently trying to fix. The youngest generation of voters are moderate to liberal. The GOP has demonized Latinos, the fastest growing demographic which also happens to make up 40% of that generation as well. This is not your father’s or grandfather's Republican party that we're talking about here, these people are side-show freaks.

Simply put they continue to tell voters “who are you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes” and people have had enough. The scars of Republican governance are not going to be erased by the economic runaway train (that they started) continuing on it’s unstoppable trajectory off the bridge into the ravine.

Republicans had complete control of our country at it’s economic and military peak and they dismantled it. Now they own it.

The Republican party has turned into a bunch of shape-shifting mental patients. One day they're writing on the walls with their own excrement, the next day they're found playing toe tap games in a mens bathroom stall.

Have you hugged a Republican today? Be sure let your Republican friends know, that if they have been purged from the Republican Party, "Democrats are happy to continue welcoming more moderates to our Party."

The GOP has a problem. Their wingnutty base makes them an anathema to the rest of the country. For every vote the GOP picks up on the far right fringe, by promoting torture and opposing gay marriage etc, they lose a vote from the center. Republicans are trapped in a cruel electoral calculus, a variant of Newton's Third Law applied to political forces; each and every reactionary impulse produces an equal and opposite shift of momentum to the Democrats.

Just wait- As the Democrats get overweight from the greed, the GOP will be back in just like the Democrats are now.
Just remember political donations are the evil of either party and good Government.

Go ahead and live it up Democrats. You are on top for now but your short sighted over spending "blame Bush for everything" will end soon enough. After awhile you have to stop blaming the old regime and make your way on your own merit. This is where you will fail. Your too infatuated with blaming Bush to get anything done and you are helping to seperate rather than to bring together. I would rather die than to give up my beliefs to "join in" to be a part of this mess called Obamanism. Just remember 5 to 10 years from now how happy you were over this victory, you might even place a poster of Obama's innaugural night on the wall of your box that you will be proud to live in. Remember that we will be watchiong

"Art", you are full of crap. The GOP will come back, if for no other reason than we are stuck in a two party system. When Americans get unhappy, they blame the party in power and throw them out. And be careful what you wish for. My personal belief is that the two party system is not ideal, but far better than a one party system. In that situation, be it Democrats or Republicans, the radicals would increase their influence and take us down a path we don't want to go down. From the left, I'm talking about the fruitcake crowd at DailyKos and MoveOn.

Mark, I'm sure you meant to write:

The all-time high on this measure in Gallup's 30-year history of asking the question was 71 percent in February 1999, after Republican congressional policies of the 90's were implemented.

The all-time low was 7 percent last October, a couple years after the Democrats took over congress.
