'There's something strange about having to do this story.' Yes, there is.

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

It's been one of those weeks.

A week when the nation was asked to focus on long-sought healthcare reform, a week when a lot of people wanted to talk about President Barack Obama's birthplace.

"This whole thing could be settled in a minute if the president would simply produce a valid birth certificate,'' said - wait - G. Gordon Liddy, arbiter of all things up and up.

Well, replied MSNBC's Chris Matthews of Hardball, the Honolulu-born president has in fact supplied the sort of certificate that anyone needs to apply for a passport. Matthews held it up. Still, radio talk-show host and Watergate scandal veteran Liddy wanted to talk about the unsubstantiated talk that Obama was born in Kenya, the deposition of a step-grandmother that he was born in Mombassa - not the report in the Honolulu papers that he was born there.

If the president was born abroad, Matthews followed up with, and never has gone through a naturalization process, what would that make him?

"An illegal alien,'' Liddy said.

"This is so ridiculous,'' replied WRNB Radio's E. Steven Collins. "We have serious issues right now. We have a huge economy, millions of people out of work, people are concerned about healthcare and want to see something done... and we're sitting here tonight wasting time talking about, 'Is he an American?' Come on.'

Lou Dobbs.jpg

If Obama were an Irish-American or Polish-American, Collins suggested, there would be discussion whatsoever about citizenship.

"This is because many people in this nation cannot still accept the fact that a brilliant African-American is the commander-in-chief,'' Collins said. "and they're looking for ways to reduce the greatness of not just his intellect, but his honest and his purity as a person who is serving this nation.''

Lou Dobbs, the xenophobia-stirring voice of CNN, waded into the mire of the so-called "birther'' movement this week by lending it some credence on a radio show.

The folks at Media Matters, however, have compiled a list of other conservative commentators who are more inclined to dismiss the Obama birthers as "nut-burgers'' or worse. (See the roll call below the fold.)

Dobbs' own network went out of its way to display a copy of Obama's birth certificate on air. "To a large and vocal group of Americans, this paper that I just showed you might as well be bathroom tissue,'' said Rick Sanchez. "This completely unfounded story... there's something strange about having to do this story... but it's gotten to the point where there are so many people believing this story that it has to be addressed.''

Joe Scarborough: On the July 22 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, Scarborough discussed a video clip in which Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) is challenged by a woman who claims Obama has not produced a birth certificate. Scarborough described those who ascribe to this belief as "cartoon characters" who "would rather, instead of trying to actually figure out what's happening to their country -- the terrible things that are happening economically to their country -- they embrace conspiracy theories." Scarborough marveled that it was "not enough for these people" that Obama's "has been shown" as well as a birth announcement for Obama in the "Honolulu Advertiser, on the day Barack Obama was born 47 years ago." Scarborough also compared birth certificate conspiracy theorists to people who believe "the United States government blew up its own buildings and killed its own people on September 11th" and believe that we "never landed on the moon."

Michelle Malkin: In a December 5, 2008, column, Fox News contributor Malkin compared those who questioned Obama's citizenship to those who believed Gov. Sarah Palin "didn't give birth to her youngest son, Trig," and wrote that a "dangerously large segment of the birth certificate hunters have lurched into rabid Truther territory." She went on to state:

The most prominent crusader against Obama's American citizenship claim, lawyer Philip Berg (who, not coincidentally, is also a prominent 9/11 Truther), disputes that Obama was born in Hawaii and claims that Obama's paternal grandmother told him she saw Obama born in Kenya.

Berg and his supporters further assert that the "Certification of Live Birth" produced by Obama was altered or forged. They claim that the contemporaneous birth announcement in a Hawaii newspaper of Obama's birth is insufficient evidence that he was born there. (Did a fortune-teller place it in the paper knowing he would run for president?)

Malkin concluded: "I believe Trig was born to Sarah Palin. I believe Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on U.S. soil. I believe fire can melt steel and that bin Laden's jihadi crew -- not Bush and Cheney -- perpetrated mass murder on 9/11. What kind of kooky conspiracist does that make me?"

David Horowitz: In a December 8, 2008, column headlined "Obama Derangement Syndrome," Horowitz, editor of the conservative website FrontPage Magazine, blasted "continuing efforts of a fringe group of conservatives to deny Obama his victory and to lay the basis for the claim that he is not a legitimate president" as being "embarrassing and destructive." He added: "The fact that these efforts are being led by Alan Keyes, a demagogue who lost a Senate election to the then-unknown Obama by 42 points, should be a warning in itself."

Michael Medved: Medved, a conservative talk-show host, has reportedly referred to the leadership of the so-called "birther" movement as "crazy, nutburger, demagogue, money-hungry, exploitative, irresponsible, filthy conservative imposters" who are "the worst enemy of the conservative movement." According to a March 1 Politico article,

Medved "mourned": "It makes us look weird. It makes us look crazy. It makes us look demented. It makes us look sick, troubled, and not suitable for civilized company."
John Avlon: As Media Matters has documented, on the July 17 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight, the Daily Beast columnist Avlon said of the "birther" movement: "What we have here is Obama derangement syndrome. This is pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism." In his July 22 Daily Beast column, Avlon wrote of Castle's confrontation with a "birther":

Anyone who isn't damned sure that the McCain campaign and the RNC hasn't already done a thorough investigation on Obama's citizenship is delusional. If there were even a remote chance that Obama was not born in Hawaii, they would have been all over it a year ago.

This is pure crazy talk from the rabid wingnut fringe, and it is more about having a black family in the White House than anything else. The old geezer G. Gordon Liddy, angry Lou Dobbs, and nasty Liz Cheney are jumping on the bandwagon to keep the neo-conservative nutjobs in their party riled up.

While the crazies still pursue this idiotic idea....the other half of the party sends out e-mails like this one I recieved today:

21 Marines

This came to me from a Marine's wife. It says it all:

I sat, as did millions of other Americans, and watched as the government under went a peaceful transition of power a few weeks ago. At first, I felt a swell of pride and patriotism while Barack Obama took his Oath of office.

However, all that pride quickly vanished as I later watched 21 Marines, in full dress uniform with rifles, fire a 21-gun salute to the President. It was then that I realized how far America's Military had deteriorated.

Every last one of them missed!

The great Americans return!

Liddy is certainly looking old and gaunt these days. He's also looking angry and frustrated and barks like a dog. Grandpa McCain is more of an illegal alien since he was born outside the U.S. Has anyone seen his birth certificate?? What about Liddy's?? OR coward Hannity's??

Mark, there is so much wrong with this report it's not even funny.
First of all, regardless of whether G Gordon Liddy was a Watergater or not has nothing to do with this issue. There have been plenty of Dems embroiled in scandal and the media folks still go to them for their views on things like Al Gore and his fundraising scandals in which he said, "there was no controlling legal authority;" or how about Dan Rostenkowski being an analyst on local news shows after he served prison time? In fact, we've even had newspaper columnists who made up stories for their columns go on to become analysts at cable news networks like MSNBC and CNN.
Second, I highly doubt that most of those questioning Obama's birthplace are only doing it because he is African-American, which is implying that those who are questioning are racist. Why must the Left and the nimrods in the media always cry racism? Like the Cambridge cop is now a racist? If we want to discuss real racism, why is that so few reporters and anchors at places like NBC, CBS and ABC have been black or Hispanic? I's be willing to bet more racism flourishes at places like the NY Times, NBC News, ABC News, CNN, CBS News and Washington Post than it does at a West Virginia KKK meeting, even when one was run by Sen. Robert Byrd!
If you are going to use Media Matters as a source then you should notify what Media Matter is and that is a left-wing hit job. Mark, please cite one instance or even two when Media Matters has ever gone after a liberal news outfit. Media Matters has a history of taking things out of context and also LYING about the truth. Media Matters hardly is reputable. In fact, I would say Media Matters has as much integrity as that Watergate alum Liddy.
Regading Obama's birthplace, I'm willing to believe that he was born in Hawaii. But there are some real questions and they could be answered easily. Obama may have supplied a certificate that is good enough to get a passport. But why not supply the real thing? If he is suppose to be so transparant, then just show the original certificate. By doing that it would end the story, now wouldn't it?

John D proves once again....you just can't fix stupid. Through their thick skulls, the fact that an "original" has been produced, and the republican from the state of Hawaii has confirmend that the documents are valid can not seep in. They await Papa Johns birth certificate delivery business to bring it to their homes for a view. There "is" only one word to describe this......."WHACKO"

Geographically Stupid Little Johnnie D:

Provide proof to back up your allegation or be caught in public LYING AGAIN!

They've shown it many times, John D. You idiots just don't want to believe it.

Liddy's claims have been debunked multimple times; but he's a criminal and never cared about truth.

lets see his long form birth certificate...

This will all go away......

Whatever you do, mainstream media, keep giving these people air time. So much more important than the Bush family relationship with Osama bin Laden that got zero press coverage.

It was like watching a train wreck. I couldn't turn it off while it was happening! My favorite part of Liddy's mumblings in this interview was when he said (I paraphrase) Obama's momma sent out birth announcements to fool everyone in order so one day, her son could be able to steal the WH from some old white dude. Yikes!

PLEASE HELP ME!

I now spend my days in fear that an INS official will knock on my door, round up my family, and deport us.

After all... how can I be REALLY, ACTUALLY, TRULY and COMPLETELY sure I'm in the country legally.

Now.....yes, I have a birth certificate that says I was born in Chicago, Illinois and, yes, my parents tell me I was born at Edgewater Hospital and, yes, up until now I've been allowed to live and reside and educate myself and work in the United States of America, but without some law to verify the fact that all the documentation AND my memories AND what my mommy and daddy told me is TRUE who can say for certain I wasn't actually born, well... anywhere.

I might be Sudanese.

Or Chinese.

Or any of a thousand different "ese" I've never thought of.

Hell, I could really be a citizen of IRAN, which would, justifiably put me on a thousand different watch lists and make me ineligible to compete on or watch American Idol!

Now that I think of it... not being an American... how did I even learn to speak or write in English (good GOD can you even READ what I'm writing?).

Have I eaten a hot dog?

Do I know how to play football?

Am I male... caucasian... HUMAN?

I have a diploma... but did I REALLY go to college?

I have a mortgage... but do I own a house?

I have a marriage license... but maybe that never happened either.

Am I ANYTHING my documents say I am or have I always been plotting to impersonate myself?

And see, since I'm quite sure I DID NOT ever apply for, nor was granted, a green card (and don't even mention the process of becoming a naturalized citizen) I might just be an illegal alien hiding in plain sight of myself, while taking the jobs and social services for real Americans (whomever they might be).

Furthermore, my wife (if she really IS my wife), Mary, might not be a natural or naturalized citizen and though my children have birth certificates CLAIMING they were born in Dekalb, IL... my youngest son on THIS day seven years ago... and I'm pretty sure I remember being on domestic soil when he came out all purple and goopy, without a law to reconfirm and redocument what previously been confirmed and documented on driver's licenses and passports and loan documentations, how can I know what is TOTALLY, ABSOLUTELY, VERIFIABLY, CROSS-MY-HEART-AND-STICK-A-NEEDLE-IN-MY-EYE true?

(And by true, I mean "the earth is 6000 years old" true not "fakey-fakey evolution" true.)

Dear God, please, oh Pete, let congress pass the Republican sponsored and Godly blessed HR-1503 bill, so that I can one day hold my head high, knowing that I am who 45 years of paperwork, memories, and endless documentation says I--.....gulp.

(Oh, God. There's someone at the door. This is it! This is the end. PLEASE KNOW... I LOVED YOU BEST!!)

(Never mind... just a pizza. Mmmm, pepperoni.)

Idiot-for-life BC, would you please like to explain to us in the educated world your geographic views?

Also, I do not lie. But you understanding truths and reality is about as likely to happen as Charles Manson becoming an upstanding and normal citizen.

Oh crap, The Swamp's resident expert on porn, Johnny D(eepthroat), is now weighing in on the credibility of Media Matters.
*
Well, the fawning media most often lead by NBC and Chicago Obune, rarely ask the Messiah a tough question or even a follow-up. Last night's "press conference" was more like watching a porn flick than a true press conference with all the love being displayed between the state-run media and its boss.

Posted by: John D | July 23, 2009 9:10 AM

What's funny, is that J.D. keeps throwing out these challenges, "show me one instance...", and when Swampers happily oblige , there is no response from big-mouthed Johnny Timbits. He just keeps right on throwing out reckless charges and spewing lies like his heroes at Faux News.

Not only is J.D. wrong most of the time, he's lazy. Media Matters listed names of conservative media that debunked the birther movement, with quotes and references. Like BC says, if you have evidence to support your allegation that this information is false, lets here it.
*
You and a whole generation of brain-dead Americans that grew up brainwashed by Wing-Nut Radio, think they can legitimately negate any source and any argument by playing the "drive-by-media" card. Frankly, it's getting old. You choose to participate here, so do your homework or STFU! The whole Swamp is dumber for having read your baseless rants, Dyslin.

Also, I do not lie.

Look everyone!

Lil' Johnny FruitLoops told a joke!

Ha Ha Ha Ha !!!

RACISM comes in many forms. A RACIST overlooks qualities of a person because of race. Blacks who overlook Barack Obama’s secrecy in refusing to show his identity, school records, passport, full birth certificate with details of birth etc. that would prove if he is eligible to be president simply because he is black, are racists. White or other ethnic people who challenge the president as ineligible for what is already known are not racists because Barack Obama acknowledges his father was a student from Kenya and he was adopted by an Indonesian and became a citizen there. That gives him divided loyalties and dual citizenship even if his mother could have bestowed US citizenship and he was born in Hawaii. Facts must be dealt with. The US Constitution requires full allegiance to the USA. Racism is dangerous for the nation.

Overlooking Communist dictatorship action of Barack Obama’s team getting Major Cook fired because he is black is racist. (WorldNetDaily)

Like most GOP minions, John D. is stupid enough to be distracted by trumped up, insignificant issues such as birth certificates while remaining unemployed and without health care. Instead of preying on the ignorance of its supporters, the GOP needs to come up solutions instead of absurdities if they ever want to be taken seriously.

Like Liddy, a self professed sadomasochist, has a shred of credibility.
These people are either stupid, insane, or both.

Chris M. corners and gasses another roach.

Now if only LouDo would go on Matthews' show and try to defend his ravings.

BC, when John D. says he doesn't lie, he is lying again.

Also, I do not lie.

Posted by: John D | July 24, 2009 1:09 PM

ROFLMAO!!! And we have John D's word to PROVE that, so JUST SHUT UP anybody who would say otherwise!

Thank god for John D's witless (and notably UNPROVEN) allegations to provide such endless entertainment.

Lil' Johnny Chucklehead,

Why don't you try backing up your delusions with some FACTS?

Provide us with some FACTS that prove that Media Matters has lied, ever. One time even.

And don't just repeat the same BS crap that Bill-O, Seany H, and Glenn Butthead told you. We want FACTS, not right-wing lunatic fringe propaganda.

You've got your homework assignment now, I'll check back in with you later tonight.
I expect you to provide the class with some FACTS to back up your delusions with young man, or you're going to be getting some more after school detention time for disrupting the class.

BEGIN!

I also like how "Mr. Independent" alias Lou Dobbs joined the bozo march. He now is just "independently stupid".

As Eric Zorn succinctly stated on his blog a couple of days ago: "GO Birthers, GO!"

Posted by: Marie Devine

Marie, WorldNetDaily is fiction; no more true than Porky the Pig. Get out of Fantasy World.

If a Luddite is one who wishes to stop progress by smashing machines, what is a Liddite?

G. Gordon gives ornery old white guys a very bad name indeed.

But I think he's suffered permanent brain damage from banging his head against the wall of his cell in that stretch he did for obstructing justice in the Watergate matter.

A very nasty old dude indeed.

Which is why the upcoming program for reforming the radio licensing procedures is so important.

After letting go three or four posts of this I decided I would finally step in to say-- you know this has gone long enough when we have colloquialized the term "birthers." ?? I know what the problem is-- you have a generation of older folks that have never so much as applied for a passport-- let alone left for the next town over-- and their representatives-- afraid of having their small world view aged out of the American fabric. How else does one explain this nonsensical fever? Should he produce his birth certificate in flyer form across the nation, next would be his inability to prove allegiance to the right religious church.. Has he chosen a mosque yet? Surely, the reasonable and tolerant "birthing" fringe would have no quams about that.

Oh, Liddy, held his head to the flame too long. He's a legal moron !! What an arcade of heroes: Getrich, Fallin, Gush the Rush, squirrelly Quayle and of course their leader, Bush&Cheney and their mascot, Laudable Liddy !! Liddy aught stick with the petty thievery, he sure would be more successful, than trying to incite, the non-thinking wing of the Republican Party, which is, all of the entire Party !!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Mr. Silva called Lou Dobbs 'xenophobia-stirring'- for being against illegal immigration? Silva should retract or be sued for slander.

What's the big deal? Just whip out that birth certificate you mentioned in your book, and make us stupid racists go away. It would save money you're spending on lawyers to hide this. Money you could be sending to your poor relatives living in government housing or mud huts in Kenya.

And if it turns out that you're not in this country legally, maybe you could be naturalized. It sure wouldn't hurt to learn some American history.

Then you can go back to slandering police and pediatricians.

Check this blog out, with the legal Moron, Liddy. He's preaching to the non-thinking wing of the Republican Party, that is, all of it !! Why don't all of you, go on a President Obama birth certificate hunt !? You can all start over in Iraq, then on to Afghanistan. Who knows, you may feel patriotic enough to stay there and help our Armed Forces over there !! Give you something really useful to do !!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I know exactly who is lying.

Jack obviously ain't no practicing attorney. I hope.

The Republican party has become a world-wide joke and this birth certificate nonsense of theirs takes the mass Wingnut stupid to another level on the crazy dial.

This just shows you how diverged the political conversations have become in this country thanks to right-wing propaganda outlets like Fixed News and the Wingnut AM Hate Radio morons.

The average Republican in this country has no idea whatsoever about what is really happening in the world because they live in a propaganda bubble world created for them by their Republican overlords.

Democrats are debating how to tackle health care and whether a public option works best and how best to get costs under control..........Meanwhile, the Republican party has become fixated on the idea that Barack Obama's family faked his birth certificate 47 years ago, knowing he would run for President eventually and need a cover story?!?!

I find it amazing that the average Republican minion in 2009 can even dress themself in the morning without getting instructions from Druggy Rush and Seany Hannity first.

We need the 'fairness doctrine' reinstated. Let Liddy and Goof Ball Lou lie all day, then get 5 minutes for the truth, on the same outlet.

Ronald Reagan's poison pill to America was ending the FD back in the 80's.

Bill R., I saw you call me a "liar" from my Bberry on the previous blog on this issue. I was on the road and could not respond. I think you and I have had exchanges before without the name calling, and I think it is unfortunate you find it necessary to break with that precident.

What I was saying in the previous blog is simply that there are two documents. There is the Certificate of Live Birth that FactCheck posted, was posted on the last Swamp blog, and is indeed, all over the internet. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this document. However, buried in the FactCheck article, below the pictures, is a paragraph where they admit that what they have is a "short form" birth certificate, and that a longer, hospital birth certificate with additional information exists. To my knowledge, this document has never been made public. If you have information to the contrary, please give me a link. I think we can agree that if it has been released to the public (e.g., AP), it would be available on the internet. I could not find it.

I think a source of confusion in the FactCheck article, and I believe why you called me a liar, is their assertion that they inspected the "original" birth certificate. This assertion makes little sense when they admit later that what they have and posted pictures of is a short form. I emailed them asking for clarification on that point, and I will certainly let you know what their response is.

Addendum

I think I just found the answer to my own question. According to CNN "researchers" (reported in an LA Times story), the original long form was destroyed in 2001 when Hawaii went paperless. Thus, it no longer exists. Oddly, the article is dated July 25, 2009 which is . . .tomorrow.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-cnnobama25-2009jul25,0,3939176.story

HerbH, that makes sense.

I guess.

Public record offices are always being sold some new technolgy by an IBM salesman or such.

Space saving solution: shred all those "old superfluous paper files".

What the Repuglicans could do : go back through the airline manifests. Find that flight to Kenya and the return flight.

The govt. does keep those.

Even that wouldn't satisfy them . If they didn't find the Obamas on a flight, they would claim they traveled incognito.

Meanwhile: where is the original of McCain's?

Mr. Liddy spent 4 1/2 years in jail due to his involvement with President Nixon and the White House Plumbers in the Watergate burglary of the DNC offices. Why is Liddy given air time and treated as a credible guest on talk shows? Why did Chris Matthews give a convicted felon air time? Seems logical that Liddy would stir up the cauldron and try to discredit President Obama's American (born) citizenship. The majority of Americans didn't want or didn't trust a republican in office this time. Obama was elected by a majority of American voters who had no problem with his citizenship. (He was NOT SELECTED by five conservative citizens--five of the nine Supreme Court Justices--as Bush was in 2000.)

Bill R., I saw you call me a "liar"
Posted by: Herbie H. | July 24, 2009 7:41 PM

Not exactly true Herbie. I asked if you had made this up as factcheck had said it viewed the original. You are one of the posters I would never have thought would get caught up in such a nonsensical brew ha ha as this. Do you really believe if there was even a chance that this were true, either McCain or any of the republicans wouldn't have checked this a million times? Really...this is just beyond crazy!

Liddy is an even bigger Fascist than Pat Buchanan. He and his fellow nativist nut-job birthers have lost. And they know it.

So, Geographically Stupid Little Johnnie D, "the Joseph Stalin of Streamwood", totally avoiding the challenge because you can't provide PROOF to back up your false allegation against Media Matters. Figures.

By the way, YOU'RE the one who stated that Kentucky and Illinois don't share a border. FALSE!

By the way, YOU'RE the one who stated that Kentucky and Arkansas share a border. FALSE!

By the way, YOU'RE the one who stated that the island of Cuba is totally within the Gulf of Mexico. FALSE!

Geographically Stupid Little Johnnie D, you ARE NOT smarter than a 5th grader!

Chris Matthews is just like Bill O'Reilly. Interrupting all the time, attacking, calling people nutjobs, etc.

Dobbs is now gone because he was finally made accountable for the things he said, but I will not kick him while he is down. I will say that beyond questioning Obama's legitimacy as a citizen, one thing he did that really upset me was to rally against the lowering of the cash amount needed to acquire an immigrant investor visa. The amount sits now at $500,000 and when the subjest of lowering it came up, he made some correlations between immigrants and terrorists that really left a bad taste in my mouth. Oh well, alls well that ends well I suppose.

Liberals at it again. G. Gordon Liddy is what, 80 years old?? I suppose that makes it a fair fight for Matthews.
Of course it's pretty tough to talk faster than an 80 year old man. shame on them!
