The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Nothing like the Internet.

Nothing like a chain-email that goes "viral.''

That's what Obama adviser David Axelrod hopes will happen with an email that he has penned (typed), our friend David Jackson at The Oval notes today.

"The White House is now hoping that a viral chain letter will help revive prospects for a health care overhaul,'' he writes at the USA Today Web-site. "Officials are forwarding an e-mail authored by top Obama adviser David Axelrod and urging recipients to pass it along. The missive includes a handy list of "8 ways (health care) reform provides security and stability to those with or without coverage, 8 common myths about reform and 8 reasons we need health insurance reform now."

"Across the country we are seeing vigorous debate about health insurance reform," Axelrod writes "Unfortunately, some of the old tactics we know so well are back -- even the viral emails that fly unchecked and under the radar, spreading all sorts of lies and distortions.....Right now, someone you know probably has a question about reform that could be answered by what's below. So what are you waiting for? Forward this email."

Nothing like "talking points,'' the GOP says.

Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, suggests that "instead of sending out talking points, House Republicans are listening to the concerns of millions of Americans who like the care that they have and want to see a solution that improves our current system, rather than radically changing it.''

Nancy-Ann DeParle of the White House Health Reform Office also joins in the PR camapign at 1600 Pennsvlvania today. See her video at rumor control central above.

And see Axelrod's "talking points'' below:

8 ways reform provides security and stability to those with or without coverage

Ends Discrimination for Pre-Existing Conditions: Insurance companies will be prohibited from refusing you coverage because of your medical history.

Ends Exorbitant Out-of-Pocket Expenses, Deductibles or Co-Pays: Insurance companies will have to abide by yearly caps on how much they can charge for out-of-pocket expenses.

Ends Cost-Sharing for Preventive Care: Insurance companies must fully cover, without charge, regular checkups and tests that help you prevent illness, such as mammograms or eye and foot exams for diabetics.

Ends Dropping of Coverage for Seriously Ill: Insurance companies will be prohibited from dropping or watering down insurance coverage for those who become seriously ill.

Ends Gender Discrimination: Insurance companies will be prohibited from charging you more because of your gender.

Ends Annual or Lifetime Caps on Coverage: Insurance companies will be prevented from placing annual or lifetime caps on the coverage you receive.

Extends Coverage for Young Adults: Children would continue to be eligible for family coverage through the age of 26.

Guarantees Insurance Renewal: Insurance companies will be required to renew any policy as long as the policyholder pays their premium in full. Insurance companies won't be allowed to refuse renewal because someone became sick.

Is there ANY White House/Axelrod "talking point" that Mark Silva, Axelrod's former colleague, won't publicize?

In the real world,

1) July home foreclosure statistics show that foreclosures rose 7% over June.

2) The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says that ObamaCare will increase, not decrease, medical costs. Doug Elmendorf, the CBO Director, responding to Congressman Nathan Deal, wrote that

"Although different types of preventive care have different effects on spending, the evidence suggests that for most preventive services, expanded utilization leads to higher, not lower, medical spending overall."

3) New jobless claims INCREASED in July.

With news such as this, no wonder the Obama media reprints DNC talking points.

Address this:
1. We already have a public option - it's called you and me!
Who is paying for the 45 million when they go into the emergency room for care - who??? We do in our premiums which rise every year. A very inefficient way to provide medical care.
2. As the pool of the employed shrink - the pool of spreading risk for the insurers also shrinks. Premiums go up. It is more cost effective to cover more than less.
3. Dow on Jan 20th- 7,949. Now 9,377 an 18% increase.
Obama=another victory!!!

President Obama's already-solid approval ratings have started to climb again. The increase in the President's poll numbers can be traced back to when Corporate Sponsored Wingnut Teabaggers started terrorizing healthcare town-hall meetings; Americans, apparently, don't like people who quash civilized discussion by rudely screaming ad nauseam.

The loud Insurance Industry Astroturfed protests by the right-wing goon squads at Congressional town hall meetings are made for the media. It doesn't matter if the protests are astroturfed, or not; no "serious journalist" can resist showing, or writing about, chaotic right-wing protests. Thus the actions of a small, frustrated, and angry crowd dominate the debate the corporate media says this country is having.

> 44,230 more people are losing health coverage each week.

> 191,670 more people are losing health coverage each month.

> 2.3 million more people are losing health coverage each year

Republicans know that a successful health care reform that achieves universal coverage will bury them electorally for a generation, that's what has them Foaming at the Mouth (see the nutjob above), they could care less if people die because they can't afford healthcare.

Health Insurers and their Lobbyists and Big Pharma know that a powerful public option and a Medicare bargaining for prices will kick them off the gravy train permanently. Republicans and Big Insurance Company propagandists know their scare tactics aren't nearly as scary as reality is for the large majority of Americans.

The Big Insurance Lobby-Republican puppets aggressive, foaming at the mouth attempts to shut down the possibility of a political discussion is reminiscent of the anti-desegregation movement, a point that becomes noteworthy when you aggregate the motives of the Wingnut "birthers", who loudly deny Obama's citizenship, the Wingnut "teabaggers", who loudly declare that the same taxes they paid under Bush are tyrannical under Obama, the Wingnut "deathers", who loudly assert that healthcare reform is secret plot to euthanize seniors and others that the government deems unproductive.

None of these positions makes a lick of sense or has any evidence to back it up, but in large part it is the same group of hard-right fringers, almost entirely white conservatives that believes all three at once. If you believe the shouters themselves, in their own words, the healthcare debate isn't about healthcare but about a conspiratorial government and the end of the Republic.

This is, by definition, a far right-wing position, and less charitably a batsh*t insane one, and that it has managed to make it so far and be featured so prominently is testament to just how completely the farthest of the far right has captured the Republican party and why they can't win elections anymore.

Axelrod IGNORES all the other "little" details they make up the bill.

Don't ignore those details, that's where your future is.

As an early supporter of the president I never dreamed that an email I sent to the White House back in February concerning a particular issue would result in my own email in-box being bombarded by the White House approximately every third day. These emails which list the senders either as President Barack Obama or David axelrod are really not helping the cause and are, in fact, annoying and invasive. Mass mailing (and "viral" anything) loses its power and is mostly recognized as pure propoganda no matter who sends it or how well meaning its intent. I realize that Mr. Axelrod is widely considered a communications genius but he is really misreading this situation and needs to cool it. According to polls the administration is losing the approval of great swaths of their independent voters who generally like to think for themselves. This type of email carpet bombing may be one small thing contributing to that lessening of support.

I'll be glad to forward all the Obama will kill grandma, Obama is an illegal, and Obama is a Muslum to you if you prefer.

The right wing media (Faux News, Rush etc) and right wing lunatic fringe astroturf groups are spreading the health insurance industry's script, reporting things as "news" when they are scare tactics and lies. Pretty much everyone is aware of it now. The teabaggers phony fake outrage gig has been exposed pretty well now, they're not convincing anyone of anything other than the fact that they're a bunch of toothless morons.

I mean, how can a rational adult believe that congress would write a bill that would demand a parent kill their son/daughter who is sick with a serious illness, or one that would kill old people? Ha Ha Ha!

I mean, can they really believe this? I don't think so, this is irrational fear taking over any rational thought.

What's left of the Republican base are people who would would follow Rush or Beck off a cliff if it was demanded of them by their Repub overlords. They're not exactly free thinkers, they're people (dittoheads) who blindly follow their right wing authoritarian leaders because their personality demands it.

Thankfully they are a minority, even if they are loud, obnoxious and profoundly stupid.

Thanks for the offer, bill r, but as my post clearly indicates, I "prefer" no unsolicited mass emails of any type. In your haste to trash did you also miss the part in my earlier post where I mention I SUPPORT the president?

I guess ol' Axlies forgot to mention what BO's health plan will do to the deficit - details as the defcit for the first ten months of this fiscal year is now over $1.2 TRILLION.

Gus,

45 million - 9 million make over $75K per year - they have chosen not to have health insurance. Another 9 million are illegal immigrants.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!

Keep reading from the Big Healthcare Lobby's script puppetboy crybaby Terri, maybe you'll get one of the dumber than a bag of rocks stumblebums who make up the GOPer base to believe you but I doubt it.

Just like you, the toothless rednecks who make up the GOP base have already been bought and paid for by the Big Healthcare Lobby - everyone else can think for themselves.

Trickled-On Anti John E,

Try the U.S. Census

Strike Two. Back to mom and dad's basement

How many of you have actually read HB3200?

If you had read it, you would not be so supportive of this horrible bill.

I guess the unionites have been given their marching orders - support the government takeover of our healthcare system, in return for their card-check.

Anti terry - I am neither toothless or redneck. However, I can read and have read the US. House of Representatives health care reform bill. Have you done so? I do not support it. I also do not support the attempt to ram it through without the public's input as the democrats tried to do. If this is such an important issue, then lawmakers should have been eliciting support from their constituents, rather than attempting to get it through "before summer recess". All senators and congressmen were elected to represent their constituents and they should 1) get constituents' opinions 2) read the full bill 3) remember who elected them (it was "we the people" not lobbyists). Forgetting this important fact will lead to the imposition of term limits in 2010., not to support the President.

And the Town Hall meetings? So what if the people that are seen are mostly seniors!! The majority of the silent younger generation are at work, school or handling the day to day living in order to support their lives/families. But do not think that this is an indication of their lack of support for the town hall seniors and their opposition to the health care reform bill as it has been proposed. They do and will show this on election day in 2010.

You socialist crackpots are amusing.

This is a failed presidency and three years of Democrat Congressional rule has been an utter disaster.

The AP had an article yesterday about window repair companies waiting for Stimulus checks after seven months so they can begin caulking windows ("green jobs", remember?). The federal government can't even caulk a damn window, they've bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, and you think socialized medicine will turn out well?

Maybe it'll be as good as the DMV, FEMA and the IRS?

Read the Constitution, you "progressive" tools, and tell me where the federal government is granted the right to do any of this stuff.

I won't hold my breath.

Unless getting driven around Martha's Vineyard by a member of the Kennedy clan.

I got a SPAM email from Axelrod about the so called "misinformation" in the Obamacare Bill, and I have never asked to be on a Whitehouse email list.

I read the Bill, it's the Whitehouse that doesn't give out the whole truth on the Bill.

Republicans have tried to get into the debate and were shut out by the Pelosi. Where is tort reform? Why can't we buy med insurance over State lines? The Dems don't want to discuss real insurance reform, they want to put through a liberal single payer program and totally control the healthcare system and another 18% of our economy. This Bill is designed to drive people into a govt. policy over a 3-5 year period. There are taxes in the bill of 8% for smallbusinesses and fines also. There are no free lunches in life the money and care is going to have to be re-distributed, rationed.

More problems ( facts), there are not enough doctors or hospitals to cover another 45 million and that equals long lines, rationed care and PEOPLE WILL DIE! The American public, by 80% is happy with their present care and don't want it totally revamped because of an agruement based on a fake inflated number of uninsured, especially using illegal aliens. The Bill won't cover everyone either, so if you are so concerned about the "poor un-insured" why are you for it! There are easier ways to provide coverage instead of a total Gov. makeover.

I say mandate Congress to enroll in the Program, they work for us! They don't want it, so don't ram it down our throats! This is the same old Liberal story, they know what's best for everybody and will BS facts to just get the agenda through. This Bill almost got ramed through in the middle of the night...IT WAS THE BLUE DOG DEMS that put the stop on it!

email is very fishy and looks like a well-done political hoax and dirty-trick to me.
So once again the liars are lying. All they have to do is snooker 51% of the populace. 'Death panels,' " govt. abortion," and hundreds of rumors can't answered individually.
Carl Rove is at work.

Hello Canoer,

The emails are coming out of the Whitehouse..Carl Rove isn't in the Whitehouse and Bush is not the President anymore, so you can't blame them...it's OBAMA!

Gus,
1. Agreed, U and Me! Just one question do you think we'll be paying more or less (in our premiums or taxes) when we're covering 245 million??
Because if you think were just going to cover just those 45 million, in the future, you need to see a doctor right away.
2. Is that the rationale for covering everyone in the US under the Single Payer option, w/ no competition?
3. So you agree, it's now Obama's economy! Cool, so glad you won't be blamin Bush anymore.

Obama needs to give up and admit defeat on this. Like Ross Perot said in the 90's "there will be a hugh sucking sound from this country," and it has happened with jobs. How many people who are forutnate to still have a job ,will find their employers dumping employees healthcare plans when their costs increase , my son's health care plan through his employer has already increased 131%!!!!!!!!

While everyone is busy criticizing a health plan that's not even finished, will someone please tell me what you'd suggest for the thousands of people who have lost their jobs and can't afford the COBRA plan's cost and the even more people who work but don't make enough money to buy health insurance and their companies don't provide it? Being able to buy insurance across state lines won't help them a bit. That's one of Dick --Connected to Insurance Companies-- Armey's brilliant suggestions.
So we just forget about those uninsured through no fault of their own, let them get sick and die? Okay, forget any claims that we're a Christian country. Just tear those pages about loving your neighbor, doing unto the least of them, your brother's keeper, and the Good Samaritan right out of your Bible and that'll take care of it.
