Global warming: a modern 'Monkey Trial'?: The Swamp

The Swamp

By Jim Tankersley

Cast your mind back to high school history class and you may recall a watershed American courtroom drama, a 1925 case against a Tennessee biology teacher that gripped the nation by pitting Darwin's evolution theory against Biblical creationism.

Nearly 85 years later, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants the federal government to stage a modern version - "a Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century" - with the science of global warming taking center stage, as I report today.

The feds are cool to the idea. But If a court were to compel the hearing, it's easy to imagine the Scopes Trial re-cast with modern players:

Al Gore in the role of defense attorney Clarence Darrow, arguing that the very fate of civilization is on trial.

Leading climate skeptic Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) as prosecutor William Jennings Bryan, arguing that if warming wins, industry goes.

Or perhaps, reaching back in the Bryan populist playbook (and your high school history text), urging the judge not to crucify America on a "cross of carbon".

At issue is the EPA's proposed "endangerment finding," which declares the heat-trapping gases that scientists say cause global warming a threat to human health. The Chamber cites other studies saying the "threat" is far from proven - and the only way to resolve the question is for the EPA to convene a public hearing on the science.

Scientists would present evidence for and against the finding. Each side would be allowed to cross-examine the other. An administrative law judge, or an EPA official, would preside and issue the final ruling. The EPA conducts similar hearings routinely, but on much smaller issues, such as issuing permits. Chamber officials say the agency held a large-scale public hearing in the 1970s on the subject of toxic water pollutants.

EPA officials say such a hearing would be a waste of time and money - so the Chamber will likely sue in federal court in hopes of forcing one.

Chamber officials fear the endangerment finding would lead to a "cascade" of regulation of greenhouse-gas emitters on a large and small scale. They also say the Obama administration's much-publicized commitment to scientific transparency is at stake.

"The big issue is, is this how you want to run a government?" says William Kovacs, the Chamber's senior vice president for environment, technology and regulatory affairs. "Is this transparent government?"

Environmentalists say the goal is political. The Bush administration staved off major emissions reductions for years by claiming the science was unsettled, says Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist for the environmental group Union of Concerned Scientists.

That strategy "was a very effective message for inaction," she said, "which is why we're seeing this again."

Your right, they are making a monkey out of this nation, with their inane denials. Two-headed Republicans and forked-tongue Libertarians and the Right continues to say: What global warming !! The mutants are coming !! The mutants are coming to a town hall meeting, near you !! Let's discuss national healthcare, for everyone. Then, maybe, we can get the Right's chromosomes in order and get them back to their state of being, real American citizens, again.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Now that the Swamp has given this stunt the (expected) pro-Gore spin, perhaps readers should realize that the "other side" would cast this just the opposite: with Inhofe as Clarence Darrow and Gore as William Jennings Bryan.

After all, it's Gore who gives the Apocalyptic warnings, it's Gore who warns that mankind will be crucified on a Cross of Carbon.

Hmmm, something called "The Little Ice Age" ended in the mid 1850s. From the mid 1300s till the mid 1850s the world went through that Little Ice Age. Since the Little Ice Age ended in the mid 1850s, the planet's temps have risen about 1 degree. Connection?
Anyway, during THIS DECADE, global temperatures have stabilized, and even fallen a tenth of a degree. The past two winters have seen some of the coldest weather in the U.S. in recorded history. Also, in the past few years, China has seem some of its coldest temps, places like Johannesburg, South Africa have even experienced something called SNOW!
The average number of 90 degree days in Chicago the past 10 years HAS GONE DOWN, with this year only experiencing 4 of them at O'Hare compared to the average of about 20 by this time. Last summer also saw fewer 90 degree days.
Even though the Atlantic Hurricane season is in the midst of one of active phases, it has been relatively quiet the past few years, with only three named storms so far this year with Tropical Storm Anna being a questionable tropical storm. In recent years the tropical activity has lessened in the Atlantic despite dire warnings, that for the first time ever an Extratropical Storm (meaning non tropical) even got a name because the storm season was so lame they had to name something!
The FACT is the planet has a history of climate swings (Chicago at one time was burined under a mile high glacier that extended just about to the Ohio River). But for all the dire warnings of the planet destructing in 40 years because it is so hot, the fact is from 2000-2009 the planet has cooled and many parts of the planet have seen some record cool weather.
But I wouldn't expect the Chicago Crapune to report the truths or the facts.

I would love to see such a debate. Al Gore refuses to debate or even share a stage with anyone who is not a believer. Other "giants" in the field, Hanson, Mann, and the CRU refuse to release their temperature data. Science wants other to reproduce their results. Frauds don't. All have manipulated the data to reach the conclusion they want.

The advocates of Global Warming are unable to answer three simple questions:

1. Is it the case that CO2 increased by 5 per cent since 1998 whilst global temperature cooled over the same period? If so, why did the temperature not increase; and how can human emissions be to blame for dangerous levels of warming?

2. Is it the case that the rate and magnitude of warming between 1979 and 1998 (the late 20th century phase of global warming) were not unusual as compared with warmings that have occurred earlier in the Earth's history? If the warming was not unusual, why is it perceived to have been caused by human CO2 emissions; and, in any event, why is warming a problem if the Earth has experienced similar warmings in the past?

3. Is it the case that all GCM computer models projected a steady increase in temperature for the period 1990-2008, whereas in fact there were only eight years of warming were followed by ten years of stasis and cooling?

There is little to no man made global warming. The polls are showing that only the true believers continue to harp on this.

Rick

Little Johnny D,
Do you know what GLOBAL WARMING means?? First of all let's look at the word GLOBAL. It has nothing to do with the temperature in Chicago or LA or New York by themselves. Second warming refers to WARMING OF THE POLES!!!! But you think weather and climate are synonyms so you are to be ignored.

The EPA Air and Radiation people will resist this idea, becaus it threatens their jobs.

They've already regulated almost everything else down practically to non-detect levels, and the only thing left is greenhouse gases. If that goes away, there are a lot of EPA staffers out of a job, because there will be nothing left to regulate.

Donut vs. the world.

Keep up the good work flat earth crowd.

Climate change happens naturally -- that explains why we're not rubbing elbows with mammoths. "Man-made" climate change, by contrast, is one of the most insidious hoaxes ever contrived by the mind of (left-wing authoritarian) man. Just say no.

Global temperatures have declined since 1998. Scientists for Reverend Al Gore's Church of the Catastrophic Global Warming Crisis are jumping ship faster than Hopeno-tized Obama-bots are abandoning the Great Spender.

Energy hog Algore, whose Nashville mansion consumes twice the energy as the average American's home, is buying carbon credits from himself, and is poised to make millions and millions from this looney left/media/celebrity driven farce.

"Never waste a good crisis!" R. Emanuel and the Hopebama Administration.

Oh Dumb Dumb Janet, you really need to keep your bazoo shut cause you embarrass yourself time and time again with stupidity.
Hmmm, I pointed out that temps in VARIOUS PARTS fo the world have fallen and yet somehow you state that has no connection to GLOBAL? Please explain how temps in North America, China, South Africa, and let me even throw in another part of the world, South America, in which record cold temps have occurred in recent years, yet somehow Dumb Dumb Janet thinks that places throughout the world are not part of the world. You must be using that frackin geography book that BC uses?!?!?
And then you state WARMING means the Poles?!!?!?! So, in your world Global exempts North America, a good chunk of Asia, parts of Africa and South America. And Warming only applies to the Poles!!!
Anyway, Dumb Dumb, the past two years the North Pole has completely frozen over. The cold weather we've had the past two winters came from the Arctic.
Dumb Dumb Janet, go into the same hole as your counterpart, John E., and let us adults handle things.

Global warming is here. That much is evident. But here's the key question.

Does CO2 'drive' global warming or does CO2 merely 'contribute' to global warming?

If 'drives' is correct, America and the rest of the world must quickly restructure our energy infrastructure to reduce CO2 emissions. But if CO2 merely 'contributes' to global warming, we need to rethink our response to global warming/climate change. If Mother Nature actually drives climate, then we should not move precipitously to burden our economy with carbon taxes and alternative-energy subsidies. I, for one, do not want to pay a dollar or two more per gallon or see the blight of wind mills because of faulty science.

Sadly, the United States has out-sourced our scientific opinion on global warming to the United Nations. ...an organization more concerned about political influence and funding than conducting good science.

It's crystal clear. The United States needs our own objective, transparent climate commission to think-through global warming. We need the advice of a 'Climate Truth Commission' before we burden our economy with expensive energy. Both sides of the man-made global warming issue should welcome such an approach. ...since each is so darn sure of its facts.

Little Johnny D,
You can attack me all you want if it makes you feel like a big man but what say you to these FACTS:
www.usatoday.com/.../2009-04-16-march-temperatures-emissions-reduction-study_N.htm -

Dumb Dumb Janet, here are some facts for you to chew on:

http://www.climatedepot.com/a/1799/Earths-Fever-Breaks-Global-temperatures-have-plunged-74degF-since-Gore-released-An-Inconvenient-Truth

And this one points out that the cooling that has taken place this past decade has pretty much wiped out the warming that took place:

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=9644

Go back to John E.,'s basement, DD Janet!

Janet, for your reference to have any meaning, we would need to know what years were the previous 7. Remember, the AWG advocates claim that the cause is CO2. So, since CO2 is increasing, then the previous 7 warmest Jan - Mar must have been quite recent. Funny, the report doesn't say that.

Your reference does not resolve, but here is the original:

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/index.php?report=global&year=2009&month=mar

Now, the data is based on "corrected" temperature data that does not accurately reflect the urban heat island effect. Climate Audit has discussed that here:

http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=5756

As you can see from the graph, there is no trend here. Once again, the researchers have "corrected" their data to get the effect they want. Since it is a NOAA project, I was looking for Hansen's fingerprints, but didn't find them.

You always have to question the data, Janet.

Rick

Simple math explains that man-made global warming is nothing but a hoax.

Global Warming - been around about 30 years (it was global cooling in the 1970's).

Age of earth - about 300,000,000 years.

30 divided by 300,000,000 - is the result statistically significant? NO.

Also, one must evaluate temperature reporting stations for locations. For instance up until the late 1920s, Chicago's "official reporrting station" was along Lake Michigan, meaning lower summer temperatures. From the late 1920s until about 1980 it was Midway Airport, a warmer location. Since then it has been at O'Hare, a slightly cooler desination than Midway. O'Hare is cooler for largely two reasons: it doesn't have as much of the urban heat island effect as Midway and most commonly in the spring time, there can be a wide temperature variation from south to north, even the 15-20 miles difference between Midway and O'Hare.
Regardless, temperatures WORLWIDE on average are down in the past 10 years.

Terry how can ;you s;ay the earth 30000,000 years old.
It's been proven no more then 6000!
You libs are two much!!

Bushman,

Based on science, I'll go with 300,000,000 years

Terry,
That number looks low. You may have new info, but I thought 3,000,000,000
(3 to 4 billion) yrs was the estimate.

CM,

You just make my case stronger.

Terry,
I wasn't trying to help or hinder. Just sayin'.

It has been thought that there have been several Ice Ages on the Earth. It has even been said that tropical and hot areas like the Sahara, Africa, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Australia, India, Madagascar, and South America were covered with a large continental glacier tens of millions of years ago. The latest Ice Age is assumed to have started "just" about 500,000 years ago and ended 10,000 years ago. The ice sheets are believed to have covered at their widest 55 million square meters, and the thickness of the ice was at most over 3 kilometers (about 1.8 miles).

What should we think about the Ice Age? Have we any reason to believe in it? Maybe the signs that have been interpreted as signs of an Ice Age were caused by something else?
