The No. 1 search term in Google right now is "sarah palin divorce." The reason? A couple of bloggers in Alaska posted stories this morning claiming to have inside information that former Gov. Sarah Palin is divorcing her husband, Todd.
The bloggers went on to claim that Sarah Palin plans to leave the state, possibly moving to Montana.
To try to bolster its credibility, one of the sites claims to have been the first to report two previous Palin scoops: that she was running for governor and later that she was joining Sen. John McCain on the Republican ticket. In other words, the blogger is claiming to have a pretty good source inside the Palin camp.
The juicy details this blogger, The Immoral Minority, claims to have sound right out of a soap opera. For example, Palin apparently was not wearing a wedding ring at her farewell picnics last weekend. One blogger claims that's because she recently threw the ring into a lake in a fit of anger. Seems awfully cliché, doesn't it?
Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton issued a statement - on Facebook -- blasting the claims as a bunch of bunk from "some so-called journalists." She says there's absolutely no truth to the rumor and reminded everyone that a week ago Palin "asked the media to 'quit making things up.' "
The story, naturally, is getting attention on politics blogs, but nothing has moved on the wires at this hour. This looks like one that will burn up the blogs on the Internet for a few hours but not make it into print outside the tabloids.
CBS News appears to be the only mainstream media weighing in on the issue on its news page online rather than a blog. This story on its politics page (and on web sites of its affiliates) adds a quote from one Palin attorney, who says the divorce story is "categorically false" and another Palin lawyer who says the rumors are "totally untrue."
CBS News goes further to tamp down the rumor by quoting its own political director as saying that Palin often campaigned without her wedding ring. And a CBS News producer who followed Palin on the campaign trail says that the claim that the Palins weren't talking to each other at last weekend's picnics "appears to be untrue." The online story, though, does not note on what basis the producer made that assessment. Was he there last weekend or is he reporting what his sources are telling him?
CBS also says Palin may make a statement herself later today.
If she does, it will be her first since leaving office. Though she said she would remain active in politics, primarily through Twitter, observers pointed out this week that Palin has been completely missing from the scene.
With thanks to David Collins of the Orlando Sentinel.

If it was true it would be the final nail in the political coffin for little miss family values poster child.
On the positive side, a divorce would make her an unmarried MILF, which would eliminate the need for Republican males to renew their prescriptions for Viagra, and give them all natural boners for the first time since their wives and/or mistresses can remember.

I'm no fan of Sarah Palin's but I am a fan of good journalism and this "story" -- "reporting" denials of an unsubstantiated rumor -- smacks of plain old tabloid journalism. Shouldn't have been printed in the Orlando Sentinel. Shouldn't have been posted on-line at the Chicago Tribune. I'd love to read an editor's response to this comment.
Posted by: Linda | August 1, 2009 9:50 PM
The Politico web site offered a pretty good explanation of how this gained traction today beyond an anonymous blog in Alaska: "By having her spokeswoman repeat the charges to rebut them in a public form, Palin effectively guaranteed coverage from the mainstream media that otherwise would not report claims attributed to unnamed sources on an anonymous blog."
Posted by: David Collins | August 1, 2009 9:50 PM
No one's accused me of being a Palin fan, but a rumor is nothing more then that; a rumor. Nothing for anyone to get excited about until the facts present themselves.
Posted by: NoConservativePropaganda | August 1, 2009 9:58 PM
I live in Montana. Please Lord, let this rumor be false. There are certain places in Montana that Sarah definitely does NOT want to venture into... much less MOVE to.
Posted by: mavisdarling | August 1, 2009 10:23 PM
Linda: I'm an editor, and I'm happy to respond. I also posted this a little while ago at the Sentinel's blog:
Conservative web sites also blogged on the Palin story today after her folks issued denials about it. Christian Science Monitor -- whose headline on the story is "Palin Getting a Divorce? Nope" -- included this in its report: Conservative websites like The Ace of Spades thanked Stapleton for putting out a statement. “This is the sort of story that’s spreading on the lefty blogs, and then it gets pushed into the comments of other blogs, and then it leaves a Nice Innocent Good-Intended Helluva Guy like me not knowing what to do– do I inform people of what is being claimed on the internet, but at the risk of spreading what seems to be a dubious scam? Or do I censor it, where people then debate it in the comments (they’ve all seen it) but I pretend on the main page I’m oblivious to it?” Ace writes.
I'd say that's the same dilemma a story like this poses for all media. In the old days, we could ignore a story like this and say we were doing readers a favor by not wasting their time reporting rumor. With the Internet, the story spreads like wildfire regardless of what we decide, so the greater public service ends up being to report it out and let readers decide its merits.
And I think the rules are different for print and web. I decided not to publish anything about this in print. There's just not enough there there, as the saying goes.
But it was clear that people were hearing this rumor today as they were out and about and searching for information on the web. What I did -- and what most other political blogs did today -- was aggregate the reports that was out there, with links for further reading for those interested.
That may not change your opinion, but at least answers your question as to why I posted it.
Best wishes,
Posted by: David Collins | August 1, 2009 10:39 PM
So Sarah Palin hasn't had her name in the news for a few days--time to put any kind of news into the gossip line. People asked her after the charges made in her last speech what had been made up?--this backs up her claim, even if she is the one who started it! Even negative attention (to Sarah Palin) is better than no attention .

Yo TRIBUNE EDITOR!
Why was the second comment, by Kenny Bunkport, allowed to be posted? While we know it is not true, that one of her kids is named "Trash", that should not be allowed.
If I were to refer to one of the Obama girls in that manner or one using a common primate name or any other derogatory name, you would not allow it to be published. The double standard should not exist, the kids didn't choose public life.
Please remove or explain why it is allowed? Why allow the name Trash to be printed in referring to one of Sarah Palin's kids name?
Posted by: Juan Diego | August 2, 2009 12:14 AM
Well if it's not a divorce it's something else. I think we all know that Sarah didn't up and quit because she wants to make more money (the book deal was already in place and the lunatic fringe was forming one PAC after another for her), or because quitting gave her more credibility in seeking national office (huh?), or so that she could be a more effective mercenary in the army of the lord, or because she cared about having the public eye on her kids...
Sarah is one of those bullies who picks a fight and then makes rules: But you can't hit me in the face...or rip my clothes...or knock me down...in fact, I can hit you but you can't hit me...
Of course she thought that she could step into the public arena, take her shots, and then run away without getting scathed to regroup and come back again. But real fights, like real life, usually don't go like that. I have every confidence that the real reasons for her hasty retreat will be reported in grim detail in perfect proportion to all the damage she has inflicted.

Posted by: truth | August 2, 2009 1:58 AM
Let's, just for the heck of it, say there is truth in this, and Sarah is cutting ol' Todd loose. So what? She's a private citizen, and can do what she wants. She's not a Governor, hasn't announced a bid for any elected office, isn't an actress or anything, and hasn't even starred in a reality show. People get divorced every day. Big deal.

By this time next year, after Obama totally destroys this country and puts our great, great grandkids into debt up to their eyeballs, people will be praying that McCain and Palin won the election. By then you won't find a person alive that admits he or she made a mistake by voting for Obama
Posted by: Robert | August 2, 2009 2:04 AM
Rumor or truth? Probably rumor until it actually happens, which it probably won't.
Very disturbing the comments from many. I suppose most of these making the comments are liberals. And they call the conservatives "mean spirited"?
Look, I'm Republican. But I think and speak highly of Obama on a personal level, even though I disagree with his policies. Same with Biden, Dodd - not so about Clinton and Edwards. It's OK to be gracious.
Sarah Palin has not done anything immoral. I think the ethics claims against her have all been dropped and are mostly political harassment. Certainly nothing has stuck.
If you want to say she is light on the issues or something about her credentials, by all means go for it. But personally, she has lived a decent life, so keep it to the policy issues, and lay off of her family. Treat her as you would like to be treated yourself.

So David, when can we expect you to write about Gov. Ed Rendell of PA?
A few days ago a New York newspaper (NOT a blog) reported that the same hookers who serviced NY's then-Gov. Elliott Spitzer also did the deed for "Governor X". See www.gawker.com for how that governor cheating on his wife is probably Ed Rendell, PA Democrat and big friend of Obama.
Unlike the Palin story, this Rendell story is a) juicier; b) from a newspaper; c) about a sitting officeholder. Like the Palin rumor, this is all over the internet--everywhere but the Swamp.
Well, David? Why report the blog rumor on the Republican, but not the much better sourced accusation against the Democrat? Why?

On August 27, 2007, the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call revealed that Craig had been arrested for homosexual lewd conduct in the men's restroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on June 11, 2007, and entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct on August 8, 2007.[7] As a result of the controversy surrounding his arrest and subsequent guilty plea, Senator Craig announced his intention to resign from the Senate at a news conference on September 1, 2007, which was to become effective on September 30, 2007. After failing to withdraw his guilty plea, on October 4, 2007, Craig released a statement refusing to resign as senator for Idaho.

The MSM still doesn't get it. The reason some blogs -- Huffington Post, Glenn Greenwald and Andrew Sullivan come to mind -- have huge readership is because they've built up credibility through honest and detailed reporting and commentary on issues the MSM keeps missing or glossing over.
It is NOT because they cite unsourced tittle-tattle just because it happened to be on the Internet.
And thus far, the situation with Palin is just that -- unsourced tittle-tattle.
The reason newspapers have lost credibility and readers is not because they print on paper, as the notoriously web-challenged but big-selling "Economist" newsmagazine proves. It's because they print tittle-tattle like this while ignoring the real issues.

Sarahhh is going to be the gift that keeps on giving for the Democrats.
"Lame Duck" Sarahh.
Did she leave the $150000 wardrobe behind in the Gov. mansion?
The most likely reason for the Wasilla Quitta's departure was $$$$$$ to be made on right wing media outlets and speaking gigs.
Also, to take wind out of the sails of ethics investigations.
But a divorce makes sense, too.
Turning on former intimates is a marker for her histrionic personality disorder.
Just ask Levi, or former staffers she fired, or in laws she's dumped on , or.....
Maybe you'll be asking Todd.
I luvs me some Sarahhh on a Sunday morning.

There's not one single speculation about her "future" that is not derogatory.
Let alone speculation about the real reason for quitting.

OK, here is a question I have yet to hear reasonably answered.
If Sarah Palin is now history as the liberal media would claim she is, if she is no longer a force to be reckoned with, then why does the liberal media keep attacking her and her family?
What is it about this woman that terrifies pundits like Maureen Dowd, DailyKos, and Paul Krugman to the point that Palin has become an obsession with them, that they have to keep beating her down week after week?
What is it about Sarah Palin that is still throwing the liberal media into a feeding frenzy? What are they really afraid of here?
Posted by: CGull | August 2, 2009 10:32 AM
