Now that retired Republican Rep. Tom DeLay has won some national television time with his pending engagement to dance on Dancing With the Stars (he "even took disco lessons once"), he has a few things to say about things.
Including President Barack Obama's "gift certificate.'' Er, make that birth certificate. DeLay wants to see it. Talking like a "birther'' on MSNBC today, DeLay also spoke of matters such as gun control -- noting that he lost his own "carry permit'' when he was indicted. And on FOX today, he spoke of the "bait-and-switch'' health-care bill.
"I would like the president to produce his birth certificate,'' the former House Majority Leader told host Chris Matthews on MSNBC's Hardball. "I can. Most illegal aliens here in America can....Why can't the president produce a birth certificate?''
If you can get past Matthews' exhaling laughter in the video above, you'll hear the onetime power-broker from Texas say this "birther'' question isn't something that he is pressing: "I am not questioning,'' DeLay says. "The Constitution of the United States specifically says you have to be a natural-born citizen.''
The Democrats "have spent 15 years trying to demonize me and putting me in jail,'' DeLay says of the unending controversy over the Hawaiian-born American citizen-president's birthplace, asking host Matthews:"Will you ask me the president to show me his gift certificate, I mean his - gift certificate - birth certificate.''
Here it is, sir, the electronic facsimile of what the state of Hawaii has produced, vouching for its records of the president's birth in Honolulu in 1961:
The Republican also had a few things to say about the Democrats'health-care plans today, in an appearance on the FOX Business Network.
"They're trying their best to bait and switch,''' DeLay told FOX's Neil Cavuto. "This is a classic example of coming out with where you would like to go, seeing that you don't have the votes, so let's rename it and repackage it to give political cover to those people that you need to vote to pass the bill. It's done all the time.
"That's what the president is doing. Unfortunately he's less experienced at it--he doesn't know what he's doing--and it's going to fail."

Why do these silly stories continue to occupy valuable space in the media?
Barack Obama has been a US citizen since his birth in Hawaii. This is without doubt. Those who perpetuate the conspiracy theory that he was born elsewhere or on a different date should be IGNORED.
On the other hand, a reasonable question of law is: What is the intent of the Constitutional requirement of natural born citizen? The Constitution does not define natural born citizen. No US statute designates anyone to be a natural born citizen. And, although the Supreme Court has designated some individuals to be natural born citizens, each of these individuals has had two US citizen parents at the time of birth.
These stories about WHERE or WHEN the president was born is a smoke screen distraction from the real question of law. Pay not attention to the man behind the curtain.
There is much evidence that the intent of natural born citizen requirement of the Constitution is that the individual be free of foreign allegiances at the time of birth. Being free of foreign allegiances at the time of birth is, in general, an objective fact. Whether an individual develops foreign sympathies after birth is a subjective and unmeasurable attribute. But the individual's situation at the moment of birth is measurable and objective.
The founders were paranoid about foreign influence (where individual liberty has never been championed) as the quickest way to lose the new Republic.
Let's look at what the president has said about the circumstances of his birth: He was born in Hawaii, sometime in the 1960's, his father was a British subject Kenyan citizen, and he was too at the time of his birth. Isn't there enough common ground that we can agree on (foreign citizenship at birth) to spark eligibility questions? Why focus on that which is indisputable (where he was born) and inconsequential considering the first question?
Leo Donofrio has been saying for a year or more that both Barack Obama and John McCain are constitutionally ineligible. His is a thorough and accessible analysis of the question of law: what is a natural born citizen. He is well sourced and entertains all perspectives respectfully. This just shows you how diverged the political conversations have become in this country thanks to right-wing propaganda outlets like Fixed News and the Wingnut AM Hate Radio morons.
Democrats are debating how to tackle health care and whether a public option works best and how best to get costs under control....
Meanwhile, the Republican party has become fixated on non existent healthcare death panels and the idea that Barack Obama's family faked his birth certificate 47 years ago, knowing he would run for President eventually and need a cover story?!?!
It's not surprising that the Repugs can't win elections anymore.

National health care for all, or no health care for teachers, police, firemen, postal workers, military, federal employee's, state employee's, local government employee's, or anyone else that gets health care paid for by the tax payer. Everyone gets health care or no one gets healtlh care! PERIOD!! And while we are at it no pensions paid for by the tax payer!! PERIOD! Mark, please stop peddling this "birth certificate." It is NOT the original.
Anyway, DeLay said that he isn't a birther, he just asked Obimbo to produce the actual birth certificate. Why is it such a big deal to produce the actual birth certificate? I am generally of the belief that he was born in Hawaii, but I also don't see why the original birth certificate cannot be shown. I can produce my own, if asked, why can't Obimbo?
Posted by: John D | August 19, 2009 10:32 PM
I Silva this unknowledgeable or is he trying to look dumb? Hawaii issues a certificate of live birth and a long form birth certificate. All Obama has released is the certificate of live birth, not the long form birth certificate.
Now, Hawaii says they have the long form birth certificate and that Obama was born in Hawaii. There is no reason to doubt that. But, Hawaii cannot release the long form without Obama's permission. Obama refuses to give permission. So,, the question is not whether Obama was born in Hawaii, but what else is on that birth certificate that Obama wants to remain hidden.
I would expect Silva to understand the difference between the certificate of live birth and the long form birth certificate. Apparently, I would be wrong.

We need your HELP, and hope you encourage your colleagues to report on this as well. We are starting to see people bring loaded weapons to meeting where the President is attending. This has never been allowed to happen with any previous President, and should not be allowed to start now. The right to bear arms is one thing, but when it threatens the security of our President, there is no right greater than his right to be protected. If the President was on a foreign trip and their citizens brought loaded fire arms to where the President was, claiming that it was their right, we would be outraged. Obama is this Nation first Black President, and if for some unfortunate reason he gets shot it will most certainly start a race riot, and this is something that we don’t need and will scar this Country forever. There might be many that will like for this to happen, but as you well know it will destroy the Country. So please report on this and encourage your colleagues to express their disgust with this crazy behavior, Please, Please help stop this madness. Our Secret service is already under enormous strain protecting the President against countless other threats, from bombs to just about everything else that can be imagined. So imagine for a second having fifty people or more showing up at a Presidential event packing loaded weapons, this is a disaster waiting to happen! By having White Supremacist and other questionable groups and individuals lurking out there, this is something that should be taken quite serious. The People of this Country have always relied on the media to be the voice of average citizens, when their voice has other wise gone unheard. If there were ever a time for the News Media to intervene, I think that this should most definitely be that time?

In actual news, the "Cash for Clunkers" program is a clunker. From Breitbart:
“Hundreds of auto dealers in the New York area have withdrawn from the government’s Cash for Clunkers program, citing delays in getting reimbursed by the government, a dealership group said Wednesday. The Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, which represents dealerships in the New York metro area, said about half its 425 members have left the program because they cannot afford to offer more rebates. They’re also worried about getting repaid.”
By law dealers are to be reimbursed within 10 days. But only 2% of the claims have so far been reimbursed, as the government bureaucracy has been unable to process claims as quickly as promised. Many dealers are refusing to trash the clunkers until they get reimbursed.
But don't worry. Government Health Care will work perfectly.

As a McCain voter and a Registered Republican (although I have always voted split tickets) I say to DeLay, Tom , wake up and smell the coffee. Obama was born in Hawaii and that is it. To many of those questioning Obama's birth certificate, you are sounding like many of the goofy things the Left Wing Crazies of the Democratic Party come up with. This is a non-issue. The GOP has so many other important issues that Obama is on the wrong side of to go after him on, but this is not one of them. Fortunately for the GOP no currently elected Republican leaders are questioning Obama's birth. We need to move on to more important things.

Nice try, Mr. Silva, but this is what a 1961 long-form BC from Hawaii looks like: http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=105347
Stop pushing that COLB as if it's an original birth certificate.
Of course, maybe we should be challenging Obama's sanity instead of his eligibility since he would rather pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to his lawyers to prevent the release of his original BC than spend $15 and authorize its release.
What are you trying to hide, Obama?

The "Certification of Live Birth" from Hawaii looks almost identical to the "Certification of Birth" I received from Cook County that I used to apply for my passport last year.
Given the heightened international travel security since 9/11/01, if that document was good enough for a passport, it is good enough for anything. It is time for these ridiculous, far-right "birhters" to drop it. You only look silly. For crying out loud, you even have Bill O'Reilly defending Obama on this one!!!
And had McCain been elected, there would certainly be a wacky-left fringe element saying he's not qualified because of the issues surrounding his Panama Canal zone birth. And they would be just as silly as what we are seeing from the far-right now.

Delay is an unprincipled, unpatriotic moron. Here's a man who, to avoid combat in VietNam, became a pest exterminator. He's the very last person who should be talking about morals and values. Obama is a U.S. citizen who was born in Hawaii. Get over it whiny losers.

Alison claims tom Delay is a felon. Perhaps, alison would be kind enough to reference the trial where he was convicted. Oh wait, she can't. Ronnie Earle, on the second try, managed to get an indictment, but never got as far as a trial. Alison may remember that after Ronnie Earle got an indictment for something that wasn't a crime. He got a different grand jury to issue an immediate indictment on a different charge so as not to have egg on his face. Ronnie Earle is a laughing stock in Austin. It is good he retired.
What is the price someone like alison should pay for making a false claim. Can we expect, at least, a mea culpa? Doubtful.

True Patriot, thanks for that link. The certificate is similar to the one I have of my birth and I was born in 1962, one year after Obimbo.
So, if I can produce my birth certificate why can't Obimbo? Again, I am generally of the belief that he was born here, but I also believe he should produce the proof.

@ Doug R.
“What is the precedent for Obama to produce a birth certificate??”
McCain released a copy of his original BC when his eligibility under the Constitutional requirement to be a Natural Born citizen was questioned.
“Obama is a U.S. citizen who ws [sic] born in Hawaii.”
Whether or not he is a U.S. citizen is not the question. The question is whether or not he is a Natural Born citizen. You shouldn’t make the assertion if you don’t understand the difference.
“A copy of his birth certificate has been posted on the internet for months now.”
A copy of his COLB was posted. Again, you shouldn’t make the assertion if you don’t understand the difference. This is what a copy of his original BC would look like, if he has one: http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=105347

I had an encounter with the editorial department of our local paper the South Bend Tribune over the birther issue that explains how the media works today. We had a column in Sunday's paper denigrating the birthers but what bothered me was that he was trying to portray that this is some wide spread movement by most if not all of the conservative movement. I submitted a rebuttal to the "voice of the people" with my opinion that the issue is being manipulated by the administration and if they release his long form birth-certificate the discussion would be over. When the paper called me to verify I sent the letter (their normal procedure) the head of the editorial page wanted to argue with me that he has released it. When I tried to explain he has released only the certificate of live birth and it's not the same thing, she wouldn't believe me and said the paper couldn't print false statements, basically she wouldn't allow my letter to be printed unless I changed that line. Very sad commentary

DCBiker John: excellent recap of the real issue. Problem is that most people think that "citizen" is the same as "natural born citizen", one of the requirements to be president. There is no way, however, to convince the dweebs who want to argue over his birth certificate or who state that "he was born in the U,S., so he is a citizen and eligible to be president" that there is a very serious constitutional question being presented that no one with the power to do so wants to resolve. Only the federal courts can make this decision, but, as with Dinofrio, refuse to grant standing to an ordinary citizen to raise the challenge.

And does anyone else think that Obama is trying to push all his socialist programs through so fast because he knows he will be caught soon? Something to think about.

People who laugh at the "Birthers" don't seem to know the difference between a "Certificate of Live Birth" and a "Birth Certificate." Pull out your own birth certificate, and see if it has fingerprints, a footprint, and doctors signatures. Apparently, Obama's young mother was too far long to fly before his birth in Kenya, which his own grandmother says she witnessed (in Kenya). Soon afterwards, they did fly to Hawaii, where they registered the birth - hence the "Certifcate of Live Birth." So what, he's a popular president, even if he's not a legal one, right? I guess it depends on how important you consider the Constitution to be. Legally, if Obama was born out of the country, his Dad was Kenyan and his Mom was too young, and too long out of the country, for Obama to qualify as American born, then his election should be nullified, but I doubt that will ever happen, regardless of the facts.
