Jimmy Carter is a son of the segregationist South.
He figures he knows racism when he sees it, and he believes he sees it in a lot of the most virulent public protests of President Barack Obama lately.
The former president, a Nobel Peace Prize-winner and ex-peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia, who was elected to one term in the White House in 1976 and has made a post-presidential career of volunteerism at home and world-wide election-monitoring, voiced his concerns about the protests that the president has faced in an interview with NBC News preparing a piece in anticipation of his 85th birthday.
"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he is African-American,'' Carter said of some of the most vociferous demonstrations witnessed this summer - most recently the TEA Party tax-protesters who assembled in Washington over the weekend, many toting placards with inflammatory messages.
"I live in the South,'' Carter said in the interview aired last night on NBC's Nightly News, "and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shared the South's attitude toward minority groups, particularly African Americans'' come a long way as well.
But "that racism.... still exists,'' Carter said, "and I think it's bubbled up to the surface, because of a belief among many white people, not just in the South, but around the country, that African Americans are not qualified to lead this great country.
"It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply,'' Carter said, suggesting that, because of Obama's own personal qualities, he should be able to "triumph over the racist attitude that is the basis for the negative environment that we see so vividly demonstrated in public affairs in recent days.''
As much as many people will protest the "playing of the race card'' - with even the White House inclined to soft-pedal any such explanation for the heat of the summer that Obama's health-care initiative has faced in congressional town halls and other disputes - the retired Democratic president is not the first to take notice of some of the sentiment underlying the foment of public protest.
Some of that sentiment can be traced to the so-called "birther'' movement, that irrepressible chorus of people who complain that Obama cannot prove that he is a natural-born American, a basic constitutional qualification for serving as president, despite the fact that the state of Hawaii has testified to the validity of the birth certificate that his campaign first presented on the Internet last year documenting the date and place of his birth, in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961. The standard rebuttal is that this is an electronic facsimile, not the "vault'' document. The facsimile is what the state produces.
Behind the mere questioning of the citizenship of a man elected president and sworn into office by the chief justice of the Supreme Court, some analysts say, is a deep-seated racism that also is fueled by Obama's time in Indonesia as a boy, attending school there, This has fueled the Internet rumor that Obama, born of a white mother from Kansas and black father from Kenya, is a Muslim - as if there would be something wrong with that.
Obama is, of course, a Christian and an American - and also the first African American to hold the presidency, an event which the Department of Homeland Security warned earlier this year could contribute to a perfect storm of stirred-up extremist anger in some quarters, fueled by unemployment and veterans returning damaged from war. The agency warned police to be aware of the potential for lone-wolf, extremist violence.
There are some who say -- as the New York Times' Maureen Dowd has put it -- that the public outburst of the Republican from South Carolina during the presidential address to a joint session of Congress last week had racial undertones. Rep. Joe Wilson, who has apologized to the White House for shouting, "You lie,'' at the president, refused to offer an additional apology to the House, and faced a vote of censure for that yesterday. The Congressional Black Caucus had taken Wilson's outburst as a sign of disrespect for the nation's first African American president. "I guess we'll probably have folks putting on white hoods again,'' Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) told the House. "That's the logical conclusion, if this kind of attitude is not rebuked.''
Lately, the animosity that the community organization, ACORN, has faced among the most conservative critics has raised questions about the motivation of people carrying undercover video cameras into their offices to entrap workers in conversations with purported prostitutes and pimps -- with official ACORN advice dispensed to low-lifes.
The organization, which has helped impoverished people find homes and registered thousands of people to vote, also has faced allegations of misconduct in voter registration. But, because it has benefited African Americans, who vote overwhelmingly for Democrats, its leaders maintain that the campaign against ACORN, with Republican leaders in Congress pushing to cut off its federal funding, is racially motivated. It is, ACORN's leader maintained this week, the new McCarthyism -- or as one put it more bluntly, they have become "the new Willie Horton.''
Few civil-minded Americans may welcome any mention of race as a motivating factor in the public debate playing out today over the conduct and goals of government, but a former president now has placed the question on the table. And it's open for comment.

Jimmy Carter is 100% correct.

Wow.
I've always had a measure of respect for Carter as a decent man and humanitarian, even if not a particularly adept president. That is no longer true. This is such an over-the-top statement that it destroys any credibility that he may have had. These protests are purely policy-driven, and those like Carter who refuse to acknowledge that, and who attribute a racial animus to every criticism of Obama are in for a major awakening.
Posted by: The Crusty Curmudgeon | September 16, 2009 8:20 AM
Not all of the protests are racially grounded, but a lot of the attitudes that you see and hear sure smell like it. A lot of the protesters probably would not be so riled up if a white were president. It took two So Carolina politicians to really make this point clear. One said an escaped chimp in their zoo in Columbia must have been Michelle Obama's relative, and of course Joe Wilson made a name for himself by chosing to heckle Obama, which was the first time in his life he had anything to say.

How unusual of Jimmy, he just usually blames the Jews. Maybe he can work them in some how, ala the protocols of the elders of Zion.

Dear Crusty Curmudgeon, before you go thinking that racism isn't part of the picture, look through this lovely photostream of images from the 9/12 protest in DC.
If a person doesn't see racism in there, well, not sure what that says about that person.

Let's see how far the Administration can distance itself from former President Carter's comments.
While there may be a theoretical truth in some of what the former president said, it does not belong in the political dialog at this time and the Obama Administration knows it.
We should admire and respect the former president for his substancial accomplshments as both a politican and as a private citizen but I don't think anyone is going to agree wholeheartedly with his opinion simply because he was president or is a son of the south.
There's a lot of unfounded fear being cultivated by the GOP, race is definitely a part of it. It isn't the only carrot the GOP powers that be try to push in the face of the disenfranchised minority that makes up the Beck / Limbaugh / Faux Noise army out there. Socialist, Nazi, Foriegn Born, Death Panels, Communist, Black Army and on and on, are all planks in this platform of deciept that makes up the GOP agenda these days.
Some people will listen and be taken in. And some people, well meaning and well intended, will make blanket comments that don't necessarily prove or disprove the premises that they espouse.
Let's all just sit back and watch the fained outrage that the GOP and it's minions will muster. It should get really entertaining. Do you think Glenn Beck will cry?

Once again Jimmy Carter proves his incompetence on any matter involving judgement of humans. The same guy who certifies Venezuelan elections as fair, cozies up to terrorists like Arafat, and allowed Iran to be sacked by extremists in 1979 wants to lecture us on racism? There was absolutely nothing racist about Joe Wilson's comments. Lets apply Jimmy's standard to the 2004 Senate race in Illinois - Barack Obama, 50% African American, runs against Alan Keyes, 100% African American. The 50% African American defeats the 100% African American, so that means Illinois was racist because they shunned the "blacker" candidate, right Jimmy? Jimmy Carter, you're a feeble, tired, senseless and useless old politician who still thinks America cares about what you think. Please just go away.

Jimmy Carter should be ashamed of himself painting Americans with a broad brush.
Obama isn't getting nearly what Bush did from the American public and I am not a fan of Bush either.
Posted by: ivy | September 16, 2009 8:47 AM
Jimmy Carter is 100% correct. Few in the birther-deather-screamer brigade will admit to what's really going on in their collective little heads but truth be told, they will not accept anything less than a lily-white male in the oval office. Forget about the damage all the other
white men did while parked there; if they're white, they're right and to them that's all that matters.
Good people of all races need to stand up against these bigots and their " issues du jour" otherwise, they will cancel out your vote and take America back to a time of shame where they thought they ruled.
Posted by: writerofwrongs | September 16, 2009 8:47 AM
Jimmy Carter was a lousy President and received a great deal of criticism for his failures and failed policies. Does that mean if he had been black those criticisms would suddenly have been racially motivated?
I am continually amazed at how the liberals in this country continue to search for a scapegoat (racists, evil doers, lunatics, party of no) for their current failures when the simple truth is very evident. The large majority of Americans are not in favor of expanding government's role in our lives and do not believe the government has the answers to every problem or the competence to solve problems when the answer is clear.
The current unrest in the country has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with the socialism being pushed by the administration. America guarantees equal opportunity, not equal outcome. The White House should use that as their guiding standard.

We have every right to complain when you see the thugs Obama has brought to Wash. with him. Axelrod, Jarrett, Emanuel, ACORN, SEIU, and his shadow govt. We are not stupid and we have rights as Americans to voice our opinion without being called racists and these people will not shut me up. If Obama's adm. is change, give me more of the same.

Posted by: Todd | September 16, 2009 8:53 AM
I kind of think Jimmy might be a little jealous of Barry Obama. Just think, if Jimmy had only been black he could have blamed his failed presidency on racism. The truth is that Carter, like Barry, was inept and unqualified to be POTUS. See Jimmy, you have something in common with Barry after all. And once Barry is finished being a one term president you'll have something else in common with him.

It's time for this doddering old man to just go away. This is typical of the liberal playbook; call people names and hope that they won't defend their positions. Unlike some who have immediately criticized Carter's comments as out of line, I don;t beleive he was talking specifically about Republican lawmakers. Carter clearly is addressing the unprecedented anger from the conservative base of the GOP on a grass roots level and only a few months into Obama's presidency.
There is no question race is playing a big part in the instant outrage from white conservatives.

Posted by: matt | September 16, 2009 9:08 AM
To Joe: Why is that picture racism? It is the truth based on what black people call themselves. Blacks always have to say they are African-Americans. Never Americans from African decent. So get over it.
Here is a question to all of you race baiters and whiney liberals. How come its not racism or a hate crime when two BLACK kids attack a lonely white kid on a bus in Belleville, IL? All the more proof of your double standards. If you are unwilling to accept the issue from both sides then its time you just keep your useless opinions to yourselves.

So we as American's cannot disagree with President Obama ever - because if we do it is racially motivated and has nothing to do with the way he is doing his job?!?!? Can't pin the blame on Bush anymore - have to play the race card? Black or white - his approval rating is down because Obama is simply not doing a good job. Is Carter a Kanye West fan?
Posted by: MCI | September 16, 2009 9:11 AM

-
There is always a strong element of denial involved with racism. When was the last time you heard of people who are discriminating stand up and admit that they are doing so??? They always cloak it in the "other". Example: "we can't admit blacks because our charter prohibits it" http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6620897.html
-
Now it would be something different if this was the only instance but we are talking about a string of incidents at this point (Birthers, T-baggers, fist bump protesters, etc).
-
Denial isn't just the name of a river.

Obama was elected because he is black. An overwhelming majority of his votes were motivated be race only, not qualifications. So, you can't have your racism and eat it too. By this logic, every protest every white president received from blacks was racist.
People can motives driven by many feelings. But it isi easier ti dismiss them y labeling them racist. This takes the focus away from the protest and lets the one being protested against from having to face the real issues.

This is totally false in the majority of America or Obama would have never been elected. I am white, I voted for Obama and am very unhappy with his performance and decisions. It has nothing to do with his race - its just his policies. The greatest racism I see brewing from this is an anti white racism as black people think that anyone that does not like him only feels that way due to racism. This is sad as something that should have ended old wounds may only open them and make them fester forever...

Although it is correct that some of the blogs on the Far Right border on hatred and racism at times. But former President Carter seems to overlook that blogs from the Far Left are just as bad if not worse. To characterize all opponents of President Obama's programs as being racists is completely out of line and unfair. It seems that Left Wing racists and political opportunists always like to play the race card when there is serious opposition.

People like Carter who feel they can steal the thunder from American patriots standing up for the intentions of the founding fathers with accusations of racism are sorely mistaken. Flake off, Carter...you've been politically irrelevant for years.

Leave Jimmy Carter's presidency out of this discussion. The man grew up in the Deep South and lived the experience. He was expressing his opinion, in response to a question posed by a reporter during an unrelated event. He did not issue a press release that the media picked up.
Posted by: kathryn | September 16, 2009 9:23 AM
Some of the protesters were racists, so logically racism was behind the protest. What? Mr. President, that is one seriously flawed piece of logic. Is President Obama supposed to get a pass on everything he does because he is partially of African ancestry? The agenda he is pushing with such vigor is likely to put out what little spark is left in our economy. We are simply letting him and the Democratic Party leaders know that we don't like their agenda one bit. That isn't racism. That is a call for reason and a return to sanity.

So what was it when the left was labelling Bush a Nazi or worst? They did that even before Iraq so please spare me the anti-war rhetoric. Clinton was harshly criticised over health care reform and he was white. Obama is getting it as bad or worse because he is trying to do it at a time when the government is spending loads of money to recover the economy. Clinton tried to do it a time of a growing economy. The racism charge is NOTHING but an attempt to shut up the critics. The racism card has been used for that purpose by a lot of people in daily life. If you truly want equality you better be able to face criticism. PS, Wilson is a fool for playing into the lefts hands with his idiotic lip in the House chambers. He needs to go away ASAP!! The best thing about these charges is that they will drive the moderates away from the left. They are already backfiring and are a first step to the Dem's losing the majority. Neither party can control for long because their wingnuts come to the fore and drive away the moderates. Carter needs to be quiet, he was an abysmal president and hasn't even been a good ex-president. His efforts in North Korea were a total waste of diplomacy.

Here we go. The racism crutch is officially unveiled on a national level. Are there individual racists out there? Sure there are - going both ways. So I guess now any time anyone disagrees with whatever this administration wants, it's racist?? What was the reason that people vehemently protested lots of things Bush did, or the motivation behind virtually every comedic entertainer and talk show host piling on Bush, Cheney, etc with unrestrained vigor, even now while they are no longer in power? Is that racism too? Oh no, it can't be because it's being directed at white people, who must be simply inept leaders when folks disagree with their policies. Carter is senile, Hank Johnson is not far behind him, and from here on out the race card will be lurking behind the scenes whenever anything is questioned in the future. What a pathetic gutless load of crap.
Posted by: BigDoggie | September 16, 2009 9:25 AM
Not everyone that dislikes Obama is a racist. But, I completely agree with Carter that the extreme right wing nuts are racist, at the very least, very sore losers. They would love to see the country absolutely fail in their quest to destroy Obama and they're doing every thing they can to this end.
Posted by: Ski | September 16, 2009 9:25 AM
So, if you happen to disagree with some of his policies, that automatically makes you racist? If a black man didn't agree with a policy Bush put forth, was he racist? I think this is ridiculous. I'm sure there are some backwards thinking people out there that do indeed hate Obama because he's not 100% white. But I keep in mind he never would of been elected if all white people are as racist as Carter states. And by the way... Obama is the first black President. He's also a white President. He is EQUALLY WHITE as he is BLACK. and a great representation of the melting pot the U.S. is known for. Writing off people who disagree with certain policies as being racist is the easy way out.

Dear President Carter,
Thank you for believing the American people to be so shallow. We really did need to have your helpful comments on this debate. Nevermind the fact that President Obama won his party's nomination or that he was elected president by a party and country that is made up primarily of non-African Americans. Thanks for that. It's the cheap way out of issue.
Race has no place in this debate and to interject it shows an inability to effectively debate the topic. A national health care system would bring America in line with most her industrialized peers, but it would also likely have a major impact on one of the largest employment sectors in the US. Also, there is still the issue of how we will pay for this; If $900,000,000,000.00 is cost savings is out there in the government, then why hasn't it been taken care of already? How many people will lose their jobs to create those savings?
These are the questions that the thinking American people have. I think most people would support a national health plan if a cohesive option could be put together.
Mr. Carter, you cheapened the debate.

I can see there are a lot of people in denial here. Of course, Carter is right. And, Carter is not painting EVERYONE with racism. Listen to what the likes of Limbaugh, Beck, O'Reilly, et al. say. Listen to the folks who show up at so-called town hall meetings. Read the signs from the 9/12 gathering last weekend. Read some of the jokes that have been going around the internet from various people (a lot of them politicians) i.e, "I want my country back". So folks, get a clue--racism is alive in this country.
Posted by: Janstress | September 16, 2009 9:36 AM
Anyone that disagrees with Obama is painted a racist! The Democrats seem to be the racists. Racism is not allocated to blacks only! The Democrats were racist against the Bush administration. I sick and tired of it. The racist label applied to people was started by the Obama campaign. I don't care whether the president is black, white yellow or brown as long as the look out for America! Obama fails in that category!
Posted by: Neva Stoltz | September 16, 2009 9:38 AM
Oh come on. Of course it's racism. If you don't think so then you are a racist. Do you really think there would be people from SC screaming "YOU LIE" in our most sacred of chambers if we had a white president? Come on. There are just some people who cannot swallow the fact that they are being governed by a race that they eternally despise. Why doesn't some enterprising report go investigate Joe Wilson's background and I'm sure you will find evidence that he is a red-faced, back-country racist.
Posted by: Jerry | September 16, 2009 9:39 AM
Remember people, a tv commentator calling the President of the United States is perfectly acceptable. A former President calling a Congressman a racist is completely out of bounds.
Caling a white person racist is playing the "race card," Calling a minority racist is an honest and open discussion of the deep hatred the minority has for all white people.

Get a clue people.... the protest have nothing to do with the Racism...... The working PUBLIC are just fed up with paying for those who refuse to work and get everything for nothing.... Personally I want to take care of my own not the entire country that is too lazy to get off there butts and get a job, enabling them to have the things I've worked my entire life to get. Whey should I have to pay for someone else to have health care if they don't want to get a job to have it. I have a job and pay for my health care that way... Maybe I should just quite my job and let the rest of you pay for me too...... That's what the protest are about, taxing us for nothing.... The same principles this country was founded on. Get a clue.... Quite with the race card already.....

When Bush was telling his brash lies about weapons of mass destruction and the need to invade Iraq (none of which existed), the country and Congress were the first in line to cheer lead. When Barack Obama tells Congress that the health care system in America is a mess and needs to be fixed, they call him a liar.
The fact that all efforts on the right wing fringe are focused on deligitmizing the current presidency, rather than directly confronting its policies, betrays the possibility of racist motivations.

The only person who said "African Americans are not qualified to lead this great country" is JIMMY CARTER!!
So lets see, those people who are genuinely afraid and upset about all the debt incurred by our government and the proposed public health care option are now racists, unAmerican mobsters, terrorists, Nazis.
It seems like the Democrats just keep insulting concerned Americans.
Perhaps it's time to show Democrats who's really in power.

I came from an eastern european country where the regime censored the press and people in general in the name of the state. Whoever criticised policy was labelled an enemy. Now we see the Democratic Party using racism as their weapon with the same intent: If you don't like the policies, you will be labelled a "racist". Its a very effective way of suppressing the opposition knowing the history of racism in this country. If its allowed unchecked, it will be the beginning of the end for us.

Jimmy Carter, the man who beat off a vicious swimming rabbit. The man who tried to run the country like a patrician over his plantation. The man who had the entire world deploring us. Misery loves company, he wants the Obama administration to be the laughing stock years just like the Carter administration was.

Who gives a rats patootie what the worst president in U.S history thinks? President Peanut Brain is an anti-Semite and a racist himself.
Anyway, I'm beginning to think all this racist nonsense by the Left against those who critical of Obama's POLICIES are injecting race on purpose. I believe the Left wants a return to race wars in this country. I believe the Left views new race wars as a way of bringing down this country.
Also, isn't it the Democratic party that has usually tried to usurp black politicians? Didn't the Chicago Democrats work against the city's first black mayor?
As I've said, the true racists in this country are the Left. To be a Leftist, you have to be a racist.
There may have a few crackpots in the TEA party rallies, but certainly FAR FEWER than the number of crackpots that protested Bush. MOST of the TEA party people are protesting Obama and the Dems on POLICY, not race.
Anyway, all this racist name calling will come back to haunt the Democrats, Left and Corrupt Media. Most Americans are not racist and are tired of that word being bandied about at anyone. Especially when those shouting racist are the biggest racists themselves: the Left.

Way to go President Carter, telling it like it is, once again !! Tell us, as a son of the South, what those good, old boys are capable of and what they are not !! We all knew there would be a certain segment of our society that would be unable, or unwilling, to accept President Obama because of his ethnicity, or the color of his skin. By the way, that segment isn't limited to the South, it has reared its ugly head all over America. Shame on y'all and you claim to be good Americans. You do Benedict Arnold proud !!
For those with the power, within themselves, to correct this glaring example of everything that is anti-American, please try to do so, for America' sake. America has experienced the tragedies and destruction of one civil war, she cannot afford, spiritually, emotionally and financially, another one. Come to your senses, America, before it is too late.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Yes, Carter is right.
Sorry, right wingers.
Your little code games are over.
They weren't very much more advanced from the days of George Wallace's "block voting", Ronnie's "welfare queens" or Illinois Repuglicans' own mayoral candidate Bernie Upton in 1983 whose slogan running against Washington was: "Upton--before it's too late".
Carter, being from Georgia, is well familiar with racism.
Deep south is still the heartland of racism in the US, as anyone who's lived there a year or so will attest.
Obama's election in November is all the more remarkable because he had to overcome that additional "drag" to achieve the wind speed to victory.
If his father had been a white dude from Kansas, his margin of victory would have been 8 points higher, possibly more.

You don't. The difference is that those on the recieving end no longer care. The charge of racism used to shut people down. The left has so corrupted the term and overused it that it is now ignored.
Perhaps we're headed for a time when the general public will see the true racists - liberals - for what they are.

Any critism of Obama is looked at as racism..it can no longer be denied. One person pointed to charicatures of Obama as proof of the racism of the protesters. Every protest I have ever seen has had these. When is someone going to call out that the left is now using racism as McCarthy used communism.

I do not recall President Carter condemning the members of the far-left in his party when they called President Bush "Hitler".
I do not recall President Carter condemning the members of Congress who booed President Bush several times when he addressed Congress.
I do not recall President Carter condemning members of the Democratic Party who made outlandish claims about President Bush over the last eight years.
If an individual has concerns about potential large tax increases, growing deficits, bailing out the automobile companies it is a legitimate concern and not racism.
President Carter should learn that his words have consequences!

I think it's beyond naive and ridiculous to think racism is NOT part of this overwhelming disdain and hatred towards Obama.
And some of these comments by you wingnuts absolutely scream denial. Not all of you, I know some respectful republicans but those of you who I would consider respectful come far and few between. Out of all my republican friends, I would say maybe 10% of them I can a civil conversation about politics, the rest of them resort to name calling and in some cases racist comments.
For those right wing zealots who think the republican party does not wrong, go online and check out some of the pictures from that ridiculous 9-12 tea party, read some of the signs and please report back and tell us what you saw.
To deny that race doesn't play into this is to deny that racism exists and if you're going to say that then there is absolutely no hope for you.

anyone who doesn't feel the racist undertones of the 'teabaggers', the 'deathers', & the 'birthers' obviously has never had to live as a minority in the U.S.
what are these people so mad about anyway? they can't tell you anything past a couple of bullet points. do most of these people even know what socialism, capitalism, communism, or facism even is? i would bet not.
funny that these people were nowhere to be found during a preemptive war that has killed thousands of our own soldiers (and for what), warrantless wiretapping, leaking CIA agent's identites, TORTURE!
look at the hate that are in these protester's faces, and you can match it with the same look that's in all of those people's faces in the Boston school bus embarrasment, the shameful behavior in Chicago with King, and obviously all the pictures from all over the south. Look at the images. It's the same look.

Stop your whining!! Had this protester's sign just said "Obama's a lyar", she'd still be wrong, but not racist.
But a picture of a "jungle animal"? specifically mentioning "African"? TWICE?!!
You are terribly naive. Or, like the lady with the sign, the Becks, Limbaughs, etc have stirred your racist side as they prey on the uneducated right. Just like years before. Like Bob Dylan's song about Medgar Evers. You are "Only A Pawn In Their Game".
("A bullet from the back of a bush took Medgar Evers' blood.
A finger fired the trigger to his name.
A handle hid out in the dark
A hand set the spark
Two eyes took the aim
Behind a man's brain
But he can't be blamed
He's only a pawn in their game.
A South politician preaches to the poor white man,
"You got more than the blacks, don't complain.
You're better than them, you been born with white skin," they explain.
And the Negro's name
Is used it is plain
For the politician's gain
As he rises to fame
And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.
The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid,
And the marshals and cops get the same,
But the poor white man's used in the hands of them all like a tool.
He's taught in his school
From the start by the rule
That the laws are with him
To protect his white skin
To keep up his hate
So he never thinks straight
'Bout the shape that he's in
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.
From the poverty shacks, he looks from the cracks to the tracks,
And the hoof beats pound in his brain.
And he's taught how to walk in a pack
Shoot in the back
With his fist in a clinch
To hang and to lynch
To hide 'neath the hood
To kill with no pain
Like a dog on a chain
He ain't got no name
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.
Today, Medgar Evers was buried from the bullet he caught.
They lowered him down as a king.
But when the shadowy sun sets on the one
That fired the gun
He'll see by his grave
On the stone that remains
Carved next to his name
His epitaph plain:
Only a pawn in their game.")
And Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, etc. are hoping Obama meets the same fate as Evers. And if something happens, they should be held accountable for inciting such hatred.

Just to sum it all up...when the liberal socialists and their agenda are being overwhelmingly rejected by the American folks (due to facts not fluff, disingenuous rhetoric from the Prez and the slobbering support from the now peripheral media) they call out the race card. Every time race is brought into the discussion, it is by the party that needs, uses and panders to the black population. And yes, I used black. Every single one of my black friends prefers black to the PC label of African American.
And I know racism does exist. Just not in every. single. objection. to the President's positions. Quit playing the race card every time. It's getting old.

Is there Racism in America? You bet there is and it will never go away completely. That is simply a sad but true statement.
What is not accepted by the majority of the "race baiters" is the fact that racism runs both ways down the street of many colors. Blacks are racists, Hispanics are racists, Asians are racists and yes Whites are racists too.
The only redeeming factor here in accepting this undieing racism on our planet is that NOT ALL PEOPLES are racists. Deplore it - YES! Denounce it - YES! Work to minimalize it - YES! Expecting it to go away? - NOT
Just don't put the scarlet letter on one race only as THE RACIST GROUP! When people start to think and talk like mature humans, ignore - minimalize racism in all forms, we'll all be much better off.

Because the word "racist" is tossed about so frequently; it becomes mundane. People become blaise when the word is uttered. It loses its impact.
That is occurring now. When the public hears the term, they are now shrugging their shoulders and thinking,.... heard that one too many times. It becomes just a tactic to achieve a goal, rather than a reality to the public.
And when in reality there IS racism; it will be considered a strategy rather than a real circumstance.
This is troubling.

Former President Carter's entire argument is based on the logical fallacy known as the Ad hominem argument. Basically he is saying that all of the people who are critical of Obama are racist and therefore any critical comments they make about the President are untrue. As smart as Carter once was , it is impossible for him to know all of the motives of all of the people who are critical of the current administration. The fallacy of his argument is so obvious that it should not have to be mentioned. Also it should not have been reported as news. Finally Carter's argument is a personal and abusive attack on the people and country who he once served. by making this argument , Carter has damaged his own reputation and legacy.

Anyone who can't see the racist hatred dripping from the teabaggers is simply so partisan they have been blinded by it. I grew up on the Southwest side of Chicago. I was a young man when Harold Washington ran for and won the office of mayor of Chicago. I am white. Believe me, I heard all the "vote white vote right" and other comments not fit to be printed. I saw enough racial hatred, prejudice and fear to be able to smell it a mile away. The stench of racial hatred is rising from the teabaggers. How else could you possibly explain people making less than the median income so vitriolically defending the right of insurance companies to deny them life saving procedures? Stupidity wouldn't motivate their rage -- only hatred has that kind of power.

He didn't call him a liar for trying to fix the healthcare system. He called him a liar because Obama claims illegal's won't have acces to the system, and that is a blatant lie. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (42 U.S.C. § 1395dd, EMTALA) is a United States Act of Congress passed in 1986 as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. It requires hospitals and ambulance services to provide care to anyone needing emergency healthcare treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. So it doesn't matter what the empty suit or his minions say, they do and will continue to have access at ALL of our expense.

So the nation finally elects an African-American president and for many it was a huge step forward in terms of racial equality in the United States. Now a former president makes his remarks how those who disagree with the President are motivated by racism and sorry to say as a country we have now taken two steps back! Had John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, or any of the other white democratic candidates been elected president instead of Obama and were pursuing a similar agenda, my contempt for their policies would not be any different! Jimmy Carter is a baffoon and by far the worst president that this country has had in the last 100 years! Racism? Obama is POTUS. How did that happen in a racist country? No, what is happening now is that he is being judged on his merits..for the first time...and he is failing miserably in the opinions of those of us who work for a living and care about fiscal responsibilty (just as i did at the end of Bush's term when he spent like a drunken sailor). I don't care if Obama was purple (or Hillary Clinton), i disagree with his policies and his intent to drown us in debt. BTW, my husband is black. A few months ago, dissent was the highest form of patriotism (remember? protesting the Bush war in Iraq/Afghanistan, etc.?). Now, we're told dissent is racism. What a bunch of BS.

OK. I get that if you disagree with Obama and his politics you are either A) A racist or B) In denial of being a racist. That makes sense. Can someone clarify this for me though, because I'm confused: If President Obama calls Kayne West a Jack---, is he racist? Or just in denial of being a racist?
Posted by: Scott | September 16, 2009 11:55 AM
So any time we disagree with a white person, it's politics.
But if we disagree with a black person, it's racism?
Baloney.
The reason I dislike Obama and his policies is that 1.) He's a Chicago, IL politician. I grew up in Chicago, I have followed Chgo Pols for years, and I watched Obama's meteoric rise -- AND who was fanning the flames.
The guy forces things through without even considering the will of the people. He expects us all to pledge allegiance to the President, not to the flag/country.
He's an icon, a legend in his own mind, the feel-good guy who's going to make it all right with the wave of his hand.
Wrong. He's a pol. He's narcissistic. To disagree with him is merely to say, "We don't believe that a problem that took years to create is going to get better by the president TREBLING the deficit, and intending to do so for the next two or three years."
Racism my patootie.

Does anyone need more proof why this man was a one-term President? He was inept then, and his comments are totally unnecessary now. Perhaps the left needs to be reminded that it was white Americans that catapulted Obama into the White House - now because some of them are having buyers-remorse they're automatically racists? That is letting Obama off-the-hook too easily. Yes, there are some at townhalls and tea parties that do not like Obama because he is black, but there are far more who are there protesting not only Democrats but Republicans, white and black politicians. Rather than admitting that Obama's policies are being rejected because they are more to the left than the majority of this country, the left has reverted to disgusting accusations that just aren't true. I think the White House realizes it would be wise to avoid this discussion.

Yes, the GOP and their mouthpieces continue to show their racism. That is true. Rather funny that the Glen Beck's of the world have attempted to call Obama a racist... and of course, the fire storm around Sonia Sotomayor being a racist. Beyond race they have issues with women as well. GOP is still where the white male rules. It's not puzzling that their backers are small town, less educated white people who are easily influenced by the fear rhetoric. People who have invested in their education and live in highly populated areas have less fear and far more racial diversity in their personal and professional lives. No fear of different races, different gender roles, homosexuals - trust me small town thinkers - there is nothing to be afraid of. We are not marching toward socialism. No one is going to kill your grandma. Obama is not out to get revenge on white people. Relax. Turn off your tv and enjoy your life.

Yeah that it Jimmy. It’s not his policy but the color of his skin that fiscal conservatives hate.
We also don’t like Nancy Pelosi because she’s a woman, Harry Reid because he’s a Mormon, you because you are a baptist and John Murtha and the late Ted Kennedy because they are Irish.
Yeah that's the ticket.
Check out my take and stick around for more good comment.

"... the racist attitude that is the basis for the negative environment that we see so vividly demonstrated in public affairs in recent days.''

I respectfully disagree with the former president in this respect.
Racism is not the basis for the anger but it does fuel it. There's no question about that.

Just by way of observation, the harshest and most emotional critics of Obama in and around my life are the same people who in the past have openly espoused racist beliefs. It seems the more racist, the more rabid the invective. I believe President Carter might be correct.

Posted by: tcrawford | September 16, 2009 12:35 PM
The Race Card has taken on a new dimension and magnitude. Now if you disagree with the democratic agenda you are racist.
President Obama could propose anything such as a 100% income tax, disbanding the military, suspending the bill of rights (all chosen to be absurd illustrations) and if you disagreed with the policy then your racist.

Wow, all of a sudden everyone is so interested in politics, scared to tears about the direction of the country even though we have been in a senseless war for years. The worst part is the fact that people are giving up on sound political debate to form political opinions because we as a nation can't get past race. I am as guilty as all. As right center as I am and as a young black male, they way people act toward a President I voted for makes me see the conservative movement as nothing more than "status quo racists." and their opinion on any matter no longer deserve the time of day.
Posted by: Dm | September 16, 2009 12:37 PM
That's right Carter, if you can't make an argument revert to calling names to dismiss the debate. Typical liberal.

I am appalled at some of the comments posted here. People, (PLEASE) apply some common sense to your thoughts before posting. No one is saying that you can't disagree with Obama or you will be called a racist. You are NOT a racist for disagreeing with Obama.
However, you are going to be labeled a racist if you disagree with Obama AND do so using racist analogies (please see photos of 9/12 event for numerous examples of this). Please don't waste space here trying to defend the position that there was absolutely nothing racist in any of the messages displayed at this event. Even if the person who designed the message board did not intend to send a racist message, there is more than enough reason to interpret certain messages as having a basis in racism. If you don't want to be labeled a racist then don't create message boards that can be interpreted as racist! Design your message with the goal of achieving clear and effective communication.
Come on people, all we ask here is that you apply a some basic clearheaded reasoning before posting.

Why is it that the people that seem to scream "racist" in every discussion are the ones that ONLY seem to see color in every discussion?
Every time race is brought into the discussion, it is by the party that needs, uses and panders to the black population. And yes, I used black. Every single one of my black friends prefers black to the PC label of African American.
And I know racism does exist. Just not in every. single. objection. to the President's positions. Quit playing the race card every time. It's getting old.

Does anyone recall the hype and hysteria in the 70's and 80's about subliminal messages in advertising?
Books such as "Subliminal Seduction" and "Media Sexploitation" claimed that liquor ads in magazines often embedded the word "sex" in the ice cubes in the drink glass.
A college instructor told us about the "sex in the ice cubes" story, and I fell for it. I started looking through magazines, scouring them for liquor ads. Sure enough, I started finding the word "sex" in the ice cubes. After a while, it became a pretty easy search. "Sex" seemed to be embedded in every liquor ad. Soon, I started seeing the word "sex" in ads for tires, cars, cigarettes, you name it. Sex was EVERYWHERE in advertising.
This is when it finally dawned on me that I had been too eager to accept the premise and that I had started to see something because it had been suggested to me.
I think Mr. Carter is doing the same thing now. He has been so programmed with white guilt that he's starting to see racism in everything, even when it's not there.
Mr. Carter, there is no sex in this ice cube. Put down the magazine.

To Ski: I have to agree with you that some of the Far Right make racial and hateful attacks on President Obama. But it should also be noted that the Far Left is just as bad if not worse in their attacks. Read many of those posts from the Far Left and Right and you will see that both those groups are very much alike in their hate and vicious attacks on anyone they disagree with. Unfortunately Talk Radio and Cable Television feed this hateful frenzy whether it is Rush Limbaugh and Beck or Keith Olbermann and Rachel Madlow. Discussions on those shows are many times very shallow, encourage the extremes and have little or no facts to back up their verbal attacks. Those shows bring the Left and Right Wing Nuts out of the woodwork.

I don't think that everyone who is criticizing and protesting Obama is a racist. I think that there are many people who are scared and concerned about the way things are headed. But, I think it is disingenuous to deny that there is any racism behind the protests, just look at some of the signs people were carrying on 9/12. And I would put money on Wilson being racist. He said that Strom Thurmond's African-american daughter was a 'smear on his legacy' and hyenas don't change their spots.

Of course not all the protesters are fueled by racism, but Carter is absolutely right when he says that racism is a strong element. I have seen several protesters with confederate flags, signs ridiculing black culture, saying Obama is a 'pimp from da hood' etc. What's concerning is that conservative leaders don't denounce these loons and work harder to set a more responsible tone at their protests. Let the racists know that they aren't welcome, and you'll make yourselves more credible by taking responsibility.

Actually, SB, that is exactly what Carter and many of the posters on this forum are saying. I've often heard it said from the left, e.g., Howard Zinn, that "dissent is the highest form of patriotism", but evidently he misspoke and meant to say that "dissent is the highest form of racism."

Spot Alphose. When you hear people like Beck talk of Obama's "secret negro army" or falsely accuse Van Jones of being arrested at the LA riots or that healthcare are reparations. Then you have Rush say the problem with America is it is too multi-cultural, it is not hard to see where these allegations come from. Until the right starts to stop letting these people talk for them, this will continue to be seen as such. Glenn Beck was a sponser of the tea parties and with his obvious race baiting, it will rub off on the tea parties. Plain and simple.

I didn't vote for Obama. I would have voted for Colin Powell...maybe even a Condi Rice with some more experience ( which is something Obama has none of ). People dislike Obama for a host of reasons, none of which have to do with his race. Of course there are racist protesters out there, but dismissing every single one as racist is just ridiculous. People can't disagree with Congress and The President anymore? Last time I checked, this is still the USA...although maybe not for long...

I'm certain there are some racists who don't like Obama. I'm interested that no one has commented on Mark Silva claiming that ACORN workers were "entrapped" by video journalists. This story is slowing catching on - ACORN employees across the nation have been videotaped giving advice to individuals who say they want to begin a child prostitution ring. And Silva is outraged not over ACORN, no. He claims it's racist to even investigate ACORN, let alone expose their vile criminal conspiracy for the world and the U.S. taxpayers to see. Exploiting children from the third world - ok with Mark Silva as long as ACORN helps out.

So, with W you couldn't question W's ideas or policies without being unpatriotic; now with Obama you can't question him without being a racist? Wow, that's really change I can believe in.
No doubt racism is still alive and well, but this really diminishes the debate on health care. I can't believe that the majority of people who have a beef with the Democrats' plan for health care has anything to do with the President's race. But it's an impossible argument to win if you're on the other side. As soon as you say "I'm not a racist" then you are. I'm really surprised to hear this coming from Carter.
Posted by: Wildcat Steve | September 16, 2009 1:52 PM
I find the assessment that the angst and frustration that has been exhibited this summer is racially motivated ridiculous. Julian Zelizer from CNN wrote a good article last week regarding this issue that historically lays out the fact the healthcare reform has always been a hard won battle, even when the advocates were white males. To make this a race issue is degrading the conversation, and is sad and pathetic. As if anyone who doesn't agree with the President's plan is a bigot. Get a clue!
Posted by: Vicki Kirk | September 16, 2009 1:54 PM
This was inevitable. When a white guy's policy choices are criticized -- and he's called vile names -- it's just politics. But when a black guy's policy choices are criticized [and you can't even honestly say he's 'black' because he's a mutt], then it becomes, to those who have a vested interest in those policy choices or his party, "racism".
Deal with the criticisms honestly or leave the discussion, folks.

As a life long Democrat, I believe Jimmy Carter is an embarrassment to the Office of the Presidency.
If they were only insipid, Carter's mindless and baseless statements would be only an embarrassment. But tossing out the race card, they only feed the fire of the fringe left that has a strangle hold on the Democratic Party. Like fundamentalist religious nuts, the frothing-at- the-mouth political morons in control of the U.S. House and Senate only know how to lead by attacking everybody else.

Jimmy Carter is my go to guy when I want the pulse of the nation. This is just the sort of insight I would expect from someone that brought us 10% unemployment, 18% loan rates, stagnant GDP and skyrocketing taxes.
An anti-semite calling people racist, that's precious. At least with Carter, he had an active hand in the legislation he pushed through. The current fool can't even be bothered to read the bills let alone offer his own proposed legislation.
The problem with calling someone a racist is it doesn't affect those that really are because they don't care. Those that are honest with themselves and know they aren't racist may resent the characterization but the long term effect is to lower the standing of those making the unfounded accusations.
As for ACORN, any organization that attempts to help people vote that are too stupid to figure out how on their own deserves all the contempt they bring upon themselves. The fact that the "community organizer" helped teach ACORN members how to extort money for loans to the unqualified simply reinforces the facist nature of our "leader."

The problem with Carter's proclamation and of those defending it here such as "DM" and "SB" is that Carter and the rest of you are taking the actions of a tiny minority of extremists and using that to broad-brush the entire class of people who don't support Obama's administration. Infering characteristics on any member of the whole group based on a tiny sample is the definition of racism. So, perhaps Carter and the Kool-Aide Klan are the real racists...

Carter is right, get your heads "out of the sand", or better yet, "outta yer a*%!" Okay, right, everything and everyone is not racist, I agree.
But this level of "posturing" these days sure is. All these silly outbursts, wake up folks, you know who you are. At no time in American history have we ever seen these silly antics. Where was it that people showed up with guns "strapped on" where the POTUS was speaking? Who do you think we are, stupid? We know what that means. Do you wanna trade places. And now, the so-called Rep. Wilson (The Loud Mouth of the South) opened his trap and breached civility while the President was speaking. What are you guys smoking?
As much as I disliked President Bush's policies, he was still the President, plain and simple. Bumps appeared on my arm whenever he spoke, and I was outraged when that numbskull in Irag threw at shoe at him. The response to Obama has been relentless, but guess what? Its not going to work, as all these folks, mostly zealous nuts, will eventually see the hypocrisy in these sorrow, ill-mannered antics.
The world knows what you are up to, and so does Almighty God. All this self righteous, "I love America more than you do" nonsense. Hey, you lost the election. Get over it, and learn to realize that authority does not always have to come in one form- white guys over 50. If a judge in Chicago can "hit the gavel" and admonish a guy for yawning in his courtroom, we can do the same to folks who intentionally cross the line when it comes to the President of the United States!
You know who you are, you are still trapped in the past. Humanity has, and still is evolving. What is taking you guys so long?

"WE" (for the overly sensitive) should be more understanding here. Jimmy has a lot invested in this issue -- due to his age and all. Sure, he has access to the best care. He doesn't have to worry about finding a new primary care physician for his family -- build new trust with -- every time his employer's plan is up for renew and is changed for a cheaper carrier. He can comfortably see his old age through in peace, and he'd like it to be the same for more families and gold members of the general American community. This is why when given the opportunity instead of accusing the protesters of being unsympathetic or uncaring, he accuses the protesters of racism. To be honest I don't think that any bill passed will really deal with the problem that is the health industry. No matter what passes a year later we'll be talking about all the things that were missed. Missed because the only thing that our government is good at is large basic structuring which results in bureaucracy that results in another decade of reform. Personally, I'm not overly enthusiastic of the reform before Congress. They should try to get it right because they can pass it -- and should they, it will mark the party for decades to come; or at least their ability to enact change given majority, all tools on the table, whether under an opposing president or a party member. Maybe the right is rabid and shrewd, but the left is lemming and Pollyanna like. We need a third party to rise out from under.

I hate Carter with a passion. I think he was the worst president of all time. Not because he's white, but because he made horrible choices.
Some of Obama's choices bother me, not because he's half-black, but because they are the same poor choices that Carter made.
No racism here, just good old fashion common sense. But when you don't have anything clever to say, name calling always works, right Carter?

jimmy carter is a vegetable masquerading as an intelligent human being. No wonder liberals love him. What a waste!

Carter is an AntiSemitic idiot looking for support somewhere outside of the Muslims.
He is the worst President we have ever had, and now he is trying to make even more problems. If we were racist, Obama wouldn't be President. Yes some may be racist...but the majority aren't and that is why we have a black President and not a Nazi in office.

There are fringe elements who are racist on both sides. We have Jeremiah Wright-types who support Obama and vilify whites. So what?
I have four kids. I oppose any solution to the health care mess that passes the costs to our kids. The plan is going to pay for itself by cost savings? What government plan was replete with cost overruns? How are Medicare and Medicaid doing? They are broke despite exploding costs. Jimmy Carter: you were one of the worst presidents and THIS IS NOT RACISM.

Has nothing to do with race and everything to do with policies. Wake up Liberal America!

Perhaps it is a coincidence that the man who yelled "you lie!" to Obama while he spoke to Congress has been a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a body dedicated to celebrating the Confederate cause. Or that he was an aide to notorious South Carolina politician Strom Thurmond, once an avowed and unapologetic segregationist. Or that Wilson has been an arch proponent of keeping the Confederate flag flying in Columbia.
While many black Americans unsurprisingly find the flag an offensive reminder of slavery, supporters insist it reflects traditional values. Unfortunately the truth is not so simple in South Carolina. The flag was first flown on the Capitol, not back in far-off history, but in 1962, just as civil rights was sweeping the south. It was not a long-standing tradition. It was an explicit message to intimidate black southerners seeking their political rights. That is the tradition being upheld.
