The House this afternoon is likely to take up that vote of censure in the case of Rep. Joe Wilson, who yelled at President Obama during a presidential address to Congress.
The congressman didn't just yell. He accused the president of lying.
The Republican congressman from South Carolina has little public support for what he did during Obama's address to a joint session of Congress on health care last week. More than two-thirds of those surveyed by USA Today and Gallup say they did not support what Wilson did. Even a majority of Republicans surveyed oppose it.
But voting to admonish the congressman is taking the matter too far, Republican Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), says.
"Rep. Wilson has apologized to the president, and the president accepted his apology.,'' Boehner notes. "Last Thursday, Speaker Pelosi said that she believed it was time to move on and discuss health care. I couldn't agree more, and that's why I plan to vote 'no' on this resolution. Instead of pursuing this type of petty partisanship, we should be working together to lower costs and expand access to affordable, high-quality health coverage on behalf of the American people."
A House Democratic leadership source suggests watching for that vote today.
If nothing else, the saga has been good for campaigning fundraising -- for both Wilson, seeking reelection next year, and Democrt Rob Miller, challenging him for a second time.

Comments
When will the house be voting to reprimand Nancy? She still hasn't apologized to the CIA, or to those of us she called NAZI's.
And when can we expect the reprimand of Obama for turning a joint session into just another campaign stomp? And for lying to us?

There's no point to a censure. Wilson was born a classless, racist chump, was elected by kindred souls, and will be reelected in due course by the same folks. Just Leopards do not change their spots, Wilson will not all of a sudden become a decent person in response to a censure.
Instead of sanctimonious grandstanding, the Dems need to get to work on real issues. Eight years of Republicant fearmonger, corruption and incompetence have left much to do.

This being The DNC Swamp, I did a search for the articles Mark Silva wrote when, on Sept. 14, 2007, a Democrat Congressman (Pete Stark of CA) called Pres. Bush a liar on the House floor.
You guessed it. Zero articles.
Dem calls Republican president a liar on the House floor, zero media outrage.
Rep calls Dem president a liar on the House floor, 30 articles.
No wonder no one takes The Swamp as anything other than a microphone for the DNC.

This whole thing is ridiculous! What a total waste of time. How about doing something that will do some real good, like kicking Rangel out of the House of Representatives. And I mean all the way out,. I believe the American people are finally waking up to what has been going on since the days of Dan Rostenkowski. Anyone, from either party does anything wrong should be thrown out of office, without any pension. You cheat the American public, you deserve nothing!.

It doesn't matter, censure or not. Before too long this guy will be as irrelevent as past GOP media whores.
Anybody had a Joe the Plumber sighting recently??? Nope? How about Caribou Barbie??? Isn't it about time for Michael Steele to make an ass out of himself again? Even Rush is becoming more and more a cocktail party joke punchline. At least we still have Mr. Hyperactive, ADD, Hysterical Glenn Beck to enjoy. Hope he doesn't go back on his meds anytime soon!!!
Here at the Swamp we haven't even had an inane referencing of a Rasmussen poll from Bruce lately. Even Paulo can't come up with a sarcastic off topic comment anymore. Terry and John D can't carry the the buckets full of ignorance water for the whole party.
Come on guys. Where's your spirit???

RNC Bruce, there is a big difference in the cases you cite. Rep. Stark had the floor when he made his comment. He didn't shout it out during the speech of another like an illmannered, uneducated, emotionally out of control, buffoon like Rep. Wilson.

You think bill? Cause I'm done with thin-skinned, self-absorbed people demanding an endless stream of apologies. But if that's the way we're going to play the game, the rules should apply to all. If Obama hadn't misused the joint address in the first place, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Why don't we start there.

Except, of course, the Republican did NOT move to censure Pete Stark for calling the president a liar, but rather for calling our troops murderers. It was in all the papers, "bill r". Even the Tribune. Here's MSNBC's report:
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/10/23/426259.aspx
Mark, aren't you embarrassed that the only people who defend what you write are people such as "bill r"?

Bruce cracks me up. Now each individual Swamp writer must individually write articles about every Democratic mistep to prove they aren't biased.

If there is one thing liberals do extremely well, it's mock outrage. This is on full display with this Wilson thing. Now the issue de jour for a liberal pretending to be outraged is "decorum". This from a sub-section of society that calls GWB names that I can't even mention. Give me a break. This is about partisan snipping, and will be illustrated by a party line vote. The guy has already apoogized to BO, and BO has accepted. Pelosi is too dumb to turn the page, and will end up making this guy some kind of martyr.

Mark- apparently your skin is as thin as the congressional leaders chasing this rabbit down the hole--(Not sure where Bruce had insulted anyone...)
Funny or Ironic this fixation with serial apologies... as I was watching the prez speech about health care, Obama told me that we need an overhaul NOW to prevent catastrophic financial downturns and avoidable deaths of the uninsured. How does this nonsense fit into the agenda-?
BTW--Where's the article about ACORN? We have a organization with ties to the president of the US, and the recipient of +$50M of taxpayer money - supporting tax evasion, child exploitation and prostitution... and not one word?
Posted by: heartburn | September 15, 2009 12:56 PM
I read a column by, I think it was, Roger Simon this morning that said Democrats would rather discuss this stupid spology and situation than health care. An apology they can ram through. Health care is a lot harder.
It's over, it's done. Let's discuss something else. House of Reps -- you look ridiculous by dragging this on and on and on.

Posted by: Kathy | September 15, 2009 12:13 PM
Sure let's start here. In what world does the President of the United States not have a right to address the American people and a joint session of congress on an issue of great importance as health care? Of course, it may not be an issue to you as you probably have insurance through work. I find that a lot, if you can't see the problem from your house, that means to "you" that problem doesn't exist. However, many Americans (if you care) don't have insurance, or they may be selfemployed and pay outragous premiums, or they may be small business owners who can't afford coverage. Every recent Preesident has made a speech to a joint session outside of the State of the Union. Presidents Kennedy on the space program, Johnson on voting rights, Nixon, Ford and Reagan on the economy, Carter on energy, the first Bush after Iraq invaded Kuwait and the second Bush after 9/11, and Clinton on health care, to cite some examples. I'm not quite sure what you have against our country having a conversation on the problems that face us, other than you don't like the conversation. That's the great thing about democracies, it is for all the people, not just those who disagree. Now I'm trying to use a more civil tone as that is the direction we need to head. For the good of the country.

Posted by: BC | September 15, 2009 1:21 PM
Bruce...I have to say calling one a "challenged reader" then posting proof of Pete Stark calling troops murderers, and no where in that proof does it say that. As a matter of fact , nowhere in Starks remarks did he say that. What your "proof" says is: House Republican leader John Boehner just stood up on the House floor to put forward a motion to censure Rep. Pete Stark (D) over the congressman's "heads blown off for the president's amusement" remark on the House floor last week.
Posted by: bill r. | September 15, 2009 1:35 PM
Hey, if the president tends to be shady...then someone needs to speak up, right. This is politics, no one can tell me that all that is said, even about the health care reform, that it will take place-plus there are a lot of UN specifics concerning who will get health care benefits...ups, sorry, I got off the subject.

You are a fool. Anyway can any Republican riddle me this: We spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to prevent illegal immigrants from getting Medicare and Medicaid benefits. Since the program has started only 8 examples have been discovered. Are you suggesting it would be wise to spend hundreds of millions of more taxpayer dollars to enforce a problem that doesn't exist???? You folks are miserable stewards of taxpayer money.

So is Walmart receiving tons of federal money?
Is walmart already being investigated for voter fraud?
Was walmart targeted for receiveing additional federal money to play a role in the Census ( since withdrawn).. even Al Franken voted for this one!
Did President Obama ever work for Walmart?
Did Walmart take an active role in getting the vote out for Obama?

Heartburn:
Does Walmart receive tons of Federal money? Depends on how you look at it. Walmart's business model is based on a vast distribution network enabling Walmart to deliver its Chinese goods to pretty much every podunk wasteland in the country. The distribution network involves trucks on highways paid for by the Federal Government. Walmart's business would collapse without this extensive system of reliable, well-maintained roads. ACORN's take of Fed money is chump change compared to the cost of building and maintaining roads, all subsidized by the Fed.

Answers:
1) Yes, many tax breaks and subsidies lots of other corporate welfare plus many employees make so little they qualify for Medicaid.
2) No, but neither is ACORN. ACORN is being investigated for voter REGISTRATION fraud. Bad apples registered people named Kermit the Frog but there is NO proof Kermit the Frog was allowed to vote. That would be an example of vote fraud. Get it?
3)Obama worked w/ ACORN. Never FOR ACORN. You probably don't understand the difference. Let's put it this way. My greenhouse does business w/ Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart pays me for my products. Am I a Wal-Mart employee because Wal-Mart pays me? No.
4)It's documented that Wal-Mart managers pressured employees to vote McCain/Palin.

heartburn, have more people been convicted while working for ACORN, or while working in the Republican Party? Do the crimes by Republicans make all Republican suspect? Does it make the Republican Party a criminal organisation? Are you as outraged by the crimes of the Republican Party as you are byt the crimes of ACORN?

Research on politicians who have be caught in some sort of criminal activity or corruption in American history and I I'm sure the left wins by a landslide in the field of corruption. Only in America would we allow someone to commit perjury as he swears into the office of presidency

South Carolina has a long list of dignitaries that includes Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant contestant), Board of Education Chair, Kristin Maguire, Governor (and avid Appalachian hiker), Mark Sanford and now Joe “the hater not a debater” Wilson or the “screamer not the dreamer” as others have dubbed him. I did enjoy him cut and running through his apology, which only goes to show that he stands for nothing. He is just another good old boy where in the morning these married men preach to you that there should be prayer in our schools and in the evening they are on their cell phones setting up a date with their other women on the side, hypocrisy has been bred in. I am not surprised that he felt compel to yell like he was at some Friday night game. So long Joey, you too will be seeing the unemployment lines.

Some call Joe Wilson a great statesman, and are even proud of his “Shout Out”, so lets see, he says, he was told by the Republican leadership to apologize (he did not realize the magnitude of his mistake), he then gives his weak “not for reals” apology, but then goes on to those “Commentator Talk Shows” and basically says he real was not wrong and plays the victim card and calls for people to send in for money to support him for re-election. Had he kept quiet after his apology, that might have been the end of it but now that people know he lied about the apology the story will continue, until he is out of a job and the funny thing is, he does not see it coming. This summer has been rough for his beleaguered political party. At least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC). In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme religious right (people who love to push their beliefs on others while trying to take away the rights of those they just hate) and that’s who they need to extract from their party if they real want to win. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, “We Ain’t Coming Out”. The birthers, the tea baggers, the screamers, and the deathers continued extreme minority presence will become tiresome to mainstream America, if it has not already done so.

The House is developing this time wasting, money spending reprimand of Rep. Wilson...at the same time the Senate is putting together a provision in the health care reform bill to ensure illegals aren't eligible for coverage. What an absolute circus these Dems are putting on in Washington. i hope they're happy.
Apparently the House is cool with Pelosi's comments about American people, Rangel's tax issues, William Jefferson's money issues, etc.
This reprimand of Wilson is nothing more than a diversion from their stupidity when it comes to governing and legislating. Embarrassing.
