Joe the congressman had a big night.
But Rep. Joe Wilson may be having a bad day.
The official House Web-site of the South Carolina Republican who shouted out to the president during last night's address to a joint session of Congress - "You lie,'' the congressman called out. "That's not true,'' the president replied - was down this morning. (See photos of more Republican protests here.)
"Due to exceptionally high traffic, this site is temporarily unavailable,'' Wilson's home-page announced. "Please come back shortly.''
Addison Graves Wilson Sr. usually goes by Joe.
Today he was laying low.
Wilson, who had a scheduled appearance with Neil Cavuto today on the FOX Business Network, was a no-show. A cancellation was called in this morning, according to a source familiar with the booking.
The Republican's opponent back home -- an Iraq war veteran who unsuccessfully challenged Wilson for his seat last year - was having a good day, the Wall Street Journal reported. By this morning, Democrat Rob Miller had raised about $100,000 from 3,000 contributors online, according to a House Democratic congressional campaign spokesman.
And around mid-day, the ante was up:
"Since Republican Congressman Joe Wilson's outburst on the House floor his Democratic opponent, former-Marine Rob Miller, has received over 5,000 individual grassroots contributions raising over $200,000 and the numbers are climbing!'' reports Ryan Rudominer, press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee
That Columbia, S.C.-based district, however, where President Bush won 60 percent of the vote in 2004 and Sen. John McCain beat Obama by nearly 10 points last fall. Wilson, a lawyer and former state legislator, is well-rooted in the GOP there.
A new Facebook group opened up: "Congressman Joe Wilson is a Jerk for Interrupting Obama.''
"Rock on Joe Wilson,'' cheers a competing Facebook group calling Obama the one who's the liar.
Within minutes of standing up to the president - for which Wilson later apologized - someone had altered the congressman's entry in Wikipedia: "He is the (expletive) that called the president of the United States a liar on national television and has no respect for the office he holds." After another tamperer weighed in, the publicly edited Web-site scrubbed the offending line, then disabled the editing button altogether.
"Editing of this article by new or unregistered users is currently disabled due to vandalism,'' Wikipedia says today.
Read all about Wilson there, while his Web-site is down.

Comments
His comments were appropriate if you have little to no respect for President Obama and if you are angling for the KKK, neo-Nazi and xenophobe voting demographic.

Joe Wilson embodies the childish, sour-grapes behavior that the GOP has engaged in since they lost the election.

I think I may be making a donation to Mr. Miller's ever growing campaign fund.
Thank you Joe Wilson - you just summed up the GOP very succinctly and successfully. They continue to act like babies and stomp their feet when they don't get their way. The GOP are a dying breed! Good riddance!!!!

I think it would be highly beneficial for Democrats to continue talking about Wilson's antics. Keep the image in the public's mind of an opposition who thinks nothing of disrespecting the President of the United States in the halls of Congress.

I just sent Joe a $100.00 donation, so did my friends and relatives. I listened to the Democrats bash bush and call him nasty names for 6 years, and now listening them Chastise Wilson has left me a little confused. These Democrats are major hypocrites....Thanks for standing up and saying what the majority of americans were thinking while listening to Obama spout his lies.

This and other choreographed events like the townhall tantrums will come back to bite the Republicans.
The whole country could see that the Joe Wilson and the Republicans were childish while the President seemed big and gracious.
May God bless you, my President.

It's yahoos like Joe (You Lie!) Wilson and Sarah (I can see Russia) Palin that'll turn this country into a one-party political system.

And since poor Joe Wilson could not contain his emotion, he is likely to be censured by the Nancy Pelosi Congressional wing of American liberals. I hope Joe's web site comes back before I forget what he did. The president lied, liberals thinks that's fine (ends justify the means) and I would like to help Joe even out those liberal donations to his opponent. After all, whenever I hear the president speak I usually jump up and shout, "Liar!," frightening my poor beleaguered wife. She agrees, but never expects my reaction.

The details: In 1999, as governor of Texas, former U.S. President George W. Bush signed legislation giving medical professionals an unprecedented level of autonomous power and creating perhaps the country's only example of a "death panel" in action.
The Advance Directives Act, known also as the Texas Futile Care Law, mostly functions in the way Palin's so-called death panels would: It gives patients the right to dictate the kind of end-of-life care they would like to receive. But the law contains a provision allowing a hospital committee to arbitrate disputes between families and physicians. The boards can end life support for patients if the care is determined to be "futile." Under the current law, the hospital need only inform the patient's family two days before the committee meets to make its decision; the family has 10 days to transfer its loved one to another facility. The Texas legislature is currently considering legislation to extend the time frame.
Advance directives were encouraged by, among others, Palin herself. When still governor of Alaska, she issued a statement on Healthcare Decisions Day encouraging an "increase [in] the number of Alaska's citizens with advance directives."

Mr. Wilson's outburst demonstrated to me that this congressman wants others to know that he does not respect President Obama enough.

Dave,
How are you contributing to Joe Wilson? His website is down? Please provide a link.

Understandable, Dave. Perhaps recollecting how the Republicans defended Bush, saying that "even if you disagree with the man, you have to respect the office" might give you some perspective on how hypocrisy can come from both sides.

I cut and pasted Wilson's Wiki entry 5 minutes after he made the remark. This is the exact altered entry. Pretty funny: Addison Graves Wilson, Sr., usually known as Joe Wilson (born July 31, 1947) is a racist redneck Republican politician from the U.S. state of South Carolina, currently representing the state's 2nd congressional district (map), in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district is based in the state capital, Columbia, and stretches to the resort towns of Beaufort and Hilton Head Island.
The idiot who yelled at President Obama "you lied" during his address to the joint session of Congress on Healthcare reform on September 9, 2009.

Blah, blah, blah. Politics. What about the substance? After all, he was correct.

It is rich when the liar in chief goes to lecture Congress on the contents of a bill the liar hasn't read. If any language in the proposed bills addressed how illegals would be prevented from getting health insurance, the liar might have a point. As it stands now, the crook from Chicago is lying about the cost, lying about who will be covered, lying about rationing and lying about not wanting to eliminate private health insurance.
I'm just surprised 'you lie" was only shouted once because it applied to practically everything said. At least the liar has the moral high ground with all he donates to charity. Oh that's right charity is something only suckers and chumps contribute to; it is beneath the dignity of a Chicago crook.

Dave. YOU LIE! In South Cackalackie that is pronounced, EEWWWWW LAAHHHHHHH.

What Dave REALLY meant, is that his k k k clan/family members mosied on down to the gubmint mail office and sent poor old Addleberry Wilson a truckload of their gubmit cheese. Dave, of course, having no idea of the value of gubmit cheese, naturally assumed it was worth hundreds of dollars. Dave, I have a site where you can donate ice water to Strom Thurmond.

First off Senator John McCain said on NBC's Today Show that Rep. Joe Wilson was incorrect on whether immigrants would be covered. Period!
Another thought. What would of been the reaction to a comment like "Liar" made to George Bush during a joint session of Congress to his claims of WMDs in Iraq in the build up of the war.
I can only imagine the cries from the GOP of "traitor"!
Posted by: Steve | September 10, 2009 1:39 PM
Since the President, in his speech, essentially called Sarah Palin a liar and then said "If you misrepresent what's in the plan, we will call you out.", Joe Wilson was just following the President's example.

Hey SC Voters, don't YOU just get fed up with the politicos who claim to support YOU? Like the Governor who flies off to meet his Argentinian mistress for 5 days without notice - and YOU still can't get rid of him. What would happen to YOU if YOU left work for a week without notice? Now a Rep. who calls our leader a liar. Reminds me of the many Republicans who are rich, white, middle-to-late-aged, egotistical men who can't stand being a looser. They simply turn into RUDE men.
Posted by: JIim T. | September 10, 2009 2:08 PM
The difference is the president had the floor and the right to speak. Wilson's job was to keep his mouth shut until after the president finished speaking. Don't they teach you anything about manners in South Carolina?
Maybe all that southern inbreeding is beginning to take its toll.

While dems disagreed with and were critical of President Bush. As Republicans now are of Obama.
Please show me where any democrat shouted something at Bush during any SOTU or other joint session of congress speech.
The main issue is respecting decorum during a presidential speech. Not simply criticizing the President.

Hey, Rich, like most Trib-libs, you tell lies to 'feel' funny. That was never at Wikipedia, but so what? Your prez lies, you lie.
Hey Rich, Sarah Palin doesn't lie, no matter what they've told you.

I appreicate what Joe Wilson did by speaking up. President Obama said they would stand up when someone said something untrue and now the President is MAD when Joe spoke up when he heard someone say something untrue. Do the rules not apply to the President of the US?? Joe you are my Hero, I wish you were in California.

I applaud Joe Wilson! Obama is a liar, all the man did was speak the truth, a concept Obama doesn't understand. He was speaking up for the American people...have you seen your disapproval ratings Obama? Why are you staying where you are no wanted? Leave OUR country, not yours, and go destroy your own. And who cares who you are going to remember? 2010 you'll be put out of business!

I agree with Joe Wilson. There will be a point in time that we the citizens have to wake up and acknowledge this guy is not the one that was voted into office. He has too much of an agenda.

"I applaud Joe Wilson! He was speaking up for the American people."
Which people? The white, uncivilized trolls who form your party? No other group--be it Latino, Black or Asian--has consistently embarrassed itself on a national and international stage like the thuggish, white GOP. So, when you say Wilson stands for "people," speak for those of your ilk. No one else wants to be associated with trash.

The forms of conduct we have imposed on our group proceedings, meetings of any kind) serve to retain order and maintain a working atmosphere. Wilson forgot his first kindergaten lesson (don't interrupt, stay in your seat, wait your turn, line up politely) and instead went for the shouting bully approach he must prefer. It was gratifying, however, that the comment didn't spark an outright fist-throwing, jacket-ripping scene like that which recently occcured in the Korean legislature. Sometimes it can be embarassing to admit we're human, can't it.
