Joe Wilson: Little support for shout-out: The Swamp

Joe Wilson pointer.jpgby Mark Silva

Rep. Joe Wilson may have stood up to the president, when he called President Barack Obama a liar during the president's address to Congress last week, but he didn't have much public support for doing so.

More than two-thirds of those surveyed by USA Today and Gallup say they did not support what the South Carolina Republican did during the president's nationally televised address.

Even a majority of Republicans surveyed oppose what the congressman did.

Sixty-eight percent said they opposed what Wilson did - (yelled out, "You lie,'' when the president said his health-care initiative would not cover illegal immigrants) - including 23 percent who said they were outraged. Few who supported Wilson's move said they were "thrilled'' by it - with Gallup calling the overall response somewhat "muted'' for lack of strong opinion either way.

Most people said they had followed the story very or somewhat closely, and 25 percent said they had not followed it at all.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, 39 percent of the Republicans surveyed said they supported what Wilson did, while only 3 percent of the Democrats surveyed said so. And 86 percent of the Democrats surveyed said they opposed what he did, while 52 percent of Republicans opposed it.

The survey of 1,030 adults was run Sept. 11-13, with a 4 percent possible margin of error.

What Wilson did was not only childish it was pathetic and the fact that the Wingnut clowns are making excuses for him tells anyone everything they need to know about the hypocrites who make up the GOP in 2009.

Bush was booed by Dems in 2005...and Obama was booed by Repubs last week, big deal. BUT Wilson's racist outburst was something altogether different, he was personally disrespting the President and he did it on National TV..

And Republicans are also using Pete Stark as an excuse?....except the they're really reaching with that one, especially when Stark made his comments on the House floor, NOT during a nationally and internationally televised speech where there are also dignitarys from other countries in attendence.

This is typical of the GOP, one of their members acts like flaming racist fool in public and instead of demanding an apology from him like everyone else has, they try to excuse his behavior by using any sort of false equivalency argument from the past that their little pea brains can come up with.

CENSOR JOE WILSON!

Let's Be Fair....

Censure every politician who calls his opponents a liar.

Including Barack H. Obama.

Yeah, I agree, especially when they're stupid enough (Joe Wilson) to do it by rudely interupting a nationally televised speech to the country.

Joe Wilson is treasonous & juvenile Republican piece of garbage. No apology matters once you make a flapping jerk of yourself and look like a juvenile delinquent in front of millions of people.

What the hell is going on in South Carolina anyway?
Wilson acts like the Grand Wizard of the KKK and a two year old pitching a hissy fit at the same time and Argentinian Loverboy Sandford is still the Governor???

Do the people of South Carolina NOT care who represents them?

As a member of the U.S. Congress, Wilson agrees to abide by it's rules. One of the rules is that you don't call the POTUS a liar on the floor of the House when it's in session. That includes a joint session when the POTUS is an invited speaker.

Wilson may have apologized to the POTUS for his bad manners and rude behavior but it's to his own institution, the House of Representatives (and by proxy the American People), that he owes an apology to.

The blind rage and hatred of Obama displayed by the remaining white Southern evangelical right wing Republicans is disgusting and potentially a danger to America. They need to be sanctioned at the polls for their behavior.

Censure Joe Wilson!

All Wilson forgot to add to his hissy fit was the word "boy"--to show his true colors. Especially since he probably didn't have the guts to wear his white sheet and carry the burning cross.

Lil' Johnny,

The Grand Wizard of the KKK would be representing West Virginia in the Senate.

As far as "Loverboy", maybe he was just taking a cue from the 42nd President of the U.S., except doing it with someone much better looking.

Joe Wilson was right.

Recall that: "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently told a group of both legal and illegal immigrants and their families that enforcement of existing immigration laws, as currently practiced, is "un-American.""

With Nancy now writing healthcare for America; illegals are legal. Enforcement of laws against illegals is now illegal.

Joe knows.

Where to you guys get racist from calling someone a liar. Based upon the comments about it appears the racist folks are you, not Joe Wilson.
It was more of a time and place kinda deal. It is like swearing in front of Mom.. not a good idea and shows lack of respect - not racism.

What Wilson did was not only pathetic - it was something that a petulant 5 year old would do when they can't get their way.

Congratulations Republipukes! You've now permanently lost the ability to be taken seriously by anyone anywhere!

BHO has the advantage of having the truth on his side, unlike Joe and the gang.
As Churchill said; 'The best propaganda is the truth'.

Hey Joe Wilson!

Hey Joe Wilson, where you goin' with that gun in your hand
Hey Joe Wilson, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand

I'm going down to shoot my career
You know, I've caught her messin' around with another man
I'm going down to shoot my career
You know, I've caught her messin' around with another man
And that ain't too cool

Hey Joe Wilson, I've heard you shot your career down,
shot it down, now
I said I've heard you shot your career down,
You shot it down to the ground

Yes I did, I shot it
You know, I caught it messin' round, messin' round town
Yes I did, I shot it down
You know, I caught my goonish Republican party messin' around town
And I gave it the gun
I SHOT IT!

Hey Joe Wilson, alright
Shoot it one more time, baby

Hey Joe Wilson, said now
Where you gonna run to now?
Where you gonna run to?
Hey Joe Wilson, I said where you gonna run to now?
Where you, where you gonna go?
Well, dig it

I'm goin' way down south,
Way down to Mexico way
Alright!
I'm goin' way down south,
Way down where I can be free
Ain't no one gonna find me

Ain't no censorship man gonna,
He ain't gonna put a rope around me
You better believe it right now
I gotta go now
Hey Joe Wilson, you better run on down
Good bye everybody
Hey Joe Wilson, uhh
Run on down

Joe W. should get some help. He is suffering from 'angry white middle aged male syndrome '. (See Limpbaugh)
The only cure is relaxation, a glass of gin on the rocks, and a lap dance. Gets you back in touch with your humanity.
Heck, I would even support those prescriptions being covered by national health insurance. It would be worth it to slowly humanize the 29 percenters in our midst that are destroying the US.

Let me be clear; We need the public option to control the greedy insurance companies. They are the real bad guys here.

And if any of the cons. posting here had an ounce of decency they would be condemning Joe.

Wimpy Jimmy,
We get it by doing RESEARCH. Looking into the background of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-South Carolina, after his heckling of President Obama you'll find this:

Wilson also has been a member of the Columbia World Affairs Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sinclair Lodge 154, Jamil Temple, Woodmen of the World, Sons of Confederate Veterans, ....

This is an organization that, as the SPLC has detailed assiduously, has been taken over in the past decade by radical neo-Confederates who favor secession and defend slavery as a benign institution. Leading the takeover is a radical racist named Kirk Lyons, who's been an important legal figure on the far right for some years

Joe Wilson made a mistake and he rightfully apologized the next day to the President through Rahm Emmanuel.

I wonder if Rahm Emmanuel apologized to the leaders of the Republicans for his profane rant immediately after Wilson cried out?

I am still awaiting the apologies from Democrats for booing President Bush when he addressed Congress or when they compared President Bush to Hitler.

The Democrats and the main-stream-media are quick to condemn Republicans for their bad behavior but overlook their own bad behavior!

It is time to ignore the nitwits on both sides of the aisle and attempt to do something for the Country as a whole.

I guess I've come to understand, after ready the comments here and elsewhere, that Mr. Wilson should not have shouted out.

He and any Republicans with intact spines should have stood up and walked out.

Mark S., what a fascinating story, and it just goes on infinitum. democrats, like Durbin, like Schummer, Leahy, Rockefeller, Reid, Pelosi, Boxer, and Kennedy would never engage in calling a political opponent some sort of unflattering name. Oh the outrage. Got some Joe Wilson stories planned for tomorrow? This story just has, as ZZ Top may say, ~ Legs. Looking forward to that.

Just wondering though, ~ will there ever be any attention paid to ACORN? That’s the Association of Community Organizations for Reform NOW! I emphasize the NOW! Because I know they would not be into any kind of waiting. Their moment happens to be NOW! They are a housing operation but they are NOW! stretching out their operations. They have gone from fake voter registrations and election chicanery to advocating tax fraud, prostitution and encouraging child slavery. NOW! democrats would never find anything disturbing about any of that, I certainly understand that, but it would seem to be worthy of a little space in the Swamp. Well maybe not.

Didn't get the whole story due to my red Stratocaster burning so hot, but ACORN was advising some folks to just bury their illegally gained cash income in a can in the backyard. They are so clever, those ACORN folks are, and so ahead of the continuum. Maybe I would like to do some of this stuff too. Stash a little cash in a can, ya know. I, of course, would spend it on Stratocasters and wine and dining with pretty Latinas. Folks have gone racial here too, I surely noticed. Maybe u have to also be of a certain race to participate in some of these special democrat programs.

The standards of the MSM sure are high, but usually prostitution --> s*x --> a real good looking Babe in the story, how can u not at least sneak a peak? U are delusional if you think that the Joe Wilson fake-a$$ outrage is hurting Joe Wilson, but keep those Joe Wilson stories coming just the same. Sometimes, tomorrow just doesn’t come fast enough.

Joe Wilson aka Joe the Representative - stupidly believes that this is all about the lie that he told when he childishing heckled Pres Obama last week...not the heckling.

What matters is Wilson's belief that he is entitled to disrespect the President in the middle of an official and formal function.

Joe Wilson did not disrespect President Obama because he is 'passionate' or 'stupid', he did it because he believes doughy white rich guys from the Republican party are the only ones who should hold the office of President of the United States.

Nothing is more hilarious than the true racists in the world, the Loony Left, calling folks they disagree with racist. One criteria to be a Lefty is to be a racist. Joe Wilson is not a racist. He just happened to open his mouth when he shouldn't. Funny, though, that on Friday the Dems and Obimbo added a referendum to their government-run health care that would bar illegal immigrants. So, it seems Wilson was right.
But if we want to end racism in America, or the world, for that matter, then we need to get rid of those on the Left.

I think it makes sense to consider the French healthcare system. At least they have no Texas death warrants.

oops,
I'm beginning to think we should let the deep south, including Texas, have their way, and send them on their way.
But, they can't take any national assets with them. They hate the US government so much, and institutions like Medicare and Social Security, that those items should also be forfeited.
And that includes current recipients.
Why should we all continue to pay these people benefits they think are socialist?

I can hook you up with something better....a guy named Bernie...he can double that money for you. Tune that strat out of the key of E...that's cheating.

South Carolina has a long list of dignitaries that includes Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant contestant), Board of Education Chair, Kristin Maguire, Governor (and avid Appalachian hiker), Mark Sanford and now Joe “the hater not a debater” Wilson or the “screamer not the dreamer” as others have dubbed him. I did enjoy him cut and running through his apology, which only goes to show that he stands for nothing. He is just another good old boy where in the morning these married men preach to you that there should be prayer in our schools and in the evening they are on their cell phones setting up a date with their other women on the side, hypocrisy has been bred in. I am not surprised that he felt compel to yell like he was at some Friday night game. So long Joey, you too will be seeing the unemployment lines.

Yeah, what a non story that silly lefty ACORN gang is. I mean, it's only our tax dollars! What's 8.5B in eligible tax-payer funds in '09 & '10; a drop in the proverbial bucket. This Admin can burn through that kind of cash in their sleep.

And Chuckie Rangel failing to report $660K in assets? Could have happened to anyone, especially the Chair of the House Ways & Means, the top tax writing committee. How's he supposed to know all the stuff he has?

Anyway, you can't expect the Swamp to cover this! What about Joe? How can we keep up with Joe? And what about Susan Boyle? Tell us what Levi thinks of Sarah again, swampies.

Keep it up, SWAMP! Way to keep your nose to the grindstone. It's a grueling news pace.

As bad as Republican Joe "the heckler" Wilson's behavior was during Pres Obama's speech last week, look on the bright side -- at least he wasn't carrying a sign that said "Obama = Hitler", or a loaded rifle, like the rest of the goons who make up what's left of todays Republican party do when they go to health care townhall meetings.

Then again, rather than look at the bright side, just donate to Rob Miller - Joe "the heckler" Wilson's 2010 opponent. Thus far Rob is raising close to $1K per minute. Let's keep that momentum going!

Calling Joe Wilson's outburst rude would be accurate. Calling it racist would be a stretch. That is unless you are willing as 'oops' said to "do your research". Based on affiliations with certain groups who are seen as racist or hold racist ideas we can draw a parallel to Joe Wilson and say he's a racist ... hmmmm ... so based upon that logic we would have to look at Obama's past affiliations ... an admitted terrorist, a crooked governor, and a radical racist reverand who preached hatred of the U.S., and we could conclude that Obama is a racist crook who supports terrorism, and hates the U.S. Joe Wilson should and did appologize for what he did, but rightfully not for what he said, as if everyone listening believed that the Obama's plan wouldn't support those who helped him gain office. It's a naive person who listens to this president and believes what he is saying regarding his healthcare plan. If you can fund a national healthcare program through efficiencies and not addditional taxes then why is Medicare and Social Security going bankrupt? And really -WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND BELIEVES THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CAN RUN ANYTHING EFFICIENTLY???

Some call Joe Wilson a great statesman, and are even proud of his “Shout Out”, so lets see, he says, he was told by the Republican leadership to apologize (he did not realize the magnitude of his mistake), he then gives his weak “not for reals” apology, but then goes on to those “Commentator Talk Shows” and basically says he real was not wrong and plays the victim card and calls for people to send in for money to support him for re-election. Had he kept quiet after his apology, that might have been the end of it but now that people know he lied about the apology the story will continue, until he is out of a job and the funny thing is, he does not see it coming. This summer has been rough for his beleaguered political party. At least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC). In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme religious right (people who love to push their beliefs on others while trying to take away the rights of those they just hate) and that’s who they need to extract from their party if they real want to win. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, “We Ain’t Coming Out”. The bithers, the teabaggers, the screamers, and the deathers continued extreme minority presence will become tiresome to mainstream America, if it has not already done so.

hola @ 8:11 p.m.,
Que hace? Joe Wilson apologized for his behavior. I would have done the same. He said that he thought that his apology was sufficient. I would have extended it to the First Lady, to Mrs. Robinson, to Coach Robinson out in Oregon, to the Socialist Speaker of the House, Ms. Pelosi, to the Socialist Senate Majority Leader, Harold Reid, to all of the esteemed Leftist democrats, and to fellow Republicans. I would sincerely do that, but then after that you would have to go somewhere else with it because I would be done. I don't excuse bad, rude behaviour, but there does need to be an end-point to this fake-a** outrage that seems to be the biggest news in the Swamp.

Glenn Beck is great, isn't he. I love Big Frog Radio. He needs to work some of that back into the mix as he DAILY does the work of the Left Stream Media. There are a ton of Joe Wilson stories. What about the ACORN operation? Is this part of the democrats package of "hope" and "change"? The "change" is here, but the "Hope" is for whom?

If Republicans were doing this, democrats would be pounding the table into submission, demanding hearings, inquirys, subpoenas, investigations, reprimands, condemnations, prison sentences, The Hague, executions. We are all familiar with the routine.

Hola bill r. @ 9:35 p.m,
E-B-G#-E-B-E is open E tuning. The tri-tone notes for an E chord are all here, somewhat heavy on the root note of the chord. This would probably be the tuning of choice if you are Dolly Parton and have no intention of cutting No nails. Major chords can then be barred up the neck, with just the barre digit. It would be an easy way to play major chords and I suppose that minor chords could be formed with minimal additional effort (a flatted 3rd), but there are also diminished and augmented chords, flatted 7s, 9s, and 5s that probably would not be so user friendly within this tuning. In the words of Ira Gershwin ~ Not For Me.

E-A-D-G-B-E is considered to be standard G tuning. Not really sure why that is. The open chord is like an A11 ( I think). I am always interested in the interrelationship between chords, scale tones and where you find this stuff on the guitar. Altered tunings tend to complicate that. Standard G tuning or standard G with a dropped D can accomplish much. Have to stay with standard tuning, as does 98% of everyone else who plays the guitar in a serious kind of way. Not going to allege cheatin', except within the context of a great song, but we are not going to do it Dolly style. A complicated kind of thing, bill r., but It's all good.

E-A-D-G-B-E is considered to be standard G tuning.
Posted by: Django - N Exile In/Around the 30th Parallel | September 15, 2009 11:54 AM

Forgive me if I'm wrong, being a keyboard player, but wouldn't an E in the G tuning make the chord an E minor with a flated 5th? It seems so much easier to me on the keys as three right hand notes and one left hand base make the chord.

Hey, if the president tends to be shady...then someone needs to speak up, right. This is politics, no one can tell me that all that is said, even about the health care reform, that it will take place-plus there are a lot of UN specifics concerning who will get health care benefits...ups, sorry, I got off the subject.

Hola Django.
.
I think you’re a little confused on a couple points. An open E tuning isn’t E-B-G#-E-B-E. It’s E-B-E-G#-B-E. I’d rather hate to be around when someone tried to tune the D string up to G# or the G string up to E. Mayhem can result from string breakage.
.
You also said that a guitar in standard tuning spells out an A11 chord. That’s close. There are around 24 different enharmonic spellings for the chord depending on key and inversion. I’ve always thought of it as an Em7add11 chord, although I suppose A11sus2/E will all do nicely.
.
bill r. : FYI - an Emb5 chord is spelled E-G-Bb, not E-G-B. And, yes, a keyboard is much easier than a guitar for expressing many musical ideas. The only thing you can’t do on a keyboard that you can do on a guitar is bend notes, use a slide (both of which permit pitches of less than a semitone), play harmonics, or make chords with two notes of identical pitch (i.e. unison). Given the otherwise vast advantages of a piano, those aren’t much in the way of limitations. Oh, yeah, a piano also sounds terrible through a fuzz box.

I don't need a whole book to make my statement. I don't think what Wilson said is racist at all. Heck, I call all kinds of people liars because what they say not who they are. I am a Native American and Obama did lie, know the facts about it before you write a whole book on the subject.

What to go Joe! First honest statement made on the floor of the Congress in a long time.

Even if one does not agree with the President, the outburst was so disrespectful, so the rebuke was a good decision.

John W. @ 4:49 p.m.
You are correct on the open E tuning. I inadvertently transposed strings 4 and 3 and their respective open notes. The only string that I have ever broken while tuning is the 1st string, as u probably could guess. The initial new string tension will make u perk up and look for cover, just in case.

I can almost agree with the A11 sus 2, but I would have to go with A11 sus 4, although I still think that a simple A11 passes also. E-A-D-G-B-E, we have the root ~ A. The major 3rd is raised to a 4th ~ D. This would then be a sus 4, although I would also consider it to be a 4th above the root ~ a loosely labeled 11th if not a true 11th. The 5th is present ~ E. The diminished 7th is present ~ G. Finally, the 9th is present ~ B, which gives me A11 sus 4. If we can appropriate the sus 4, to get to 11. The good news is that anyone could play it, but I have found it to be more useless than anything else. John W., a pretty Latina was waiting for me for lunch. I become anxious.

bill r.
As John W. stated, an Em chord with a flatted 5th would require the B note to be lowered 1/2 step to Bb. I like the somberness of a minor chord with a flatted 5th. It does have a special mood. In the right situation it makes a nice passing chord. a minor chord with a #7 that decends down is really special ~ Tom Petty's "Into The Great Wide Open". Gentlemen, again, a pL awaits. I become anxious. Have a good evening.

Django,
.
The 4th is the same as the 11th, only an octave lower - just like the 2nd is the same as the 9th an octave lower. So to spell a chord A11sus4 chord is (at worst) redundant. The same can’t be said for A11sus2/E - because the 2nd and 4th/11th are different and it accounts for the E in the bass. Otherwise you are merely expressing a preference for one enharmonic spelling over another. As I said, there are 24 different spellings for the same chord. So if you prefer E7sus4+9 to A9sus4/E or G6add2/E, or even Bm11+5/E, its all good.
.
On the other hand, I gotta completely disagree with you that it’s a useless chord. Did you forget the Rebels’ Song out of the movie “Sleeper”?
.
Don’t be anxious. When in doubt, va a almorzar con sus chicas.

John W.,

I agree with the enharmonic equivalents, but in building an 11th, I tend to want to account for the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th in some way before I call the chord an 11th. If the B is a sus 2 in an alternate enharmonic equivalent, then I am still in search of a 9th, solely for naming purposes.

On the piano, I would stack the tones progressively. On the guitar, if they are all there, all jumbled up even, then good enough because it is hard enough already to get everything in even though there may not be an octave spacing to correctly get to a 9th, 11th, or 13th. The same song in two different songbooks will seem to occasionally support that naming discrepancy.

With respect to slash chords, I admit to having a personal bias. It helps out the bassman, but I just have a naming preference for working that bass note into the full chord name, if possible. The bassman needs to deal with his own insecurities in his own way.

If I were playing something in the key of D, a Bm something or another would immediately make sense to me. In that circumstance, I would favor Bm11#5. (My recognition for #5 is just more musically immediate than +5 even though the intent of augmenting the 5th is the same). One thing I won't do, is proceed with a bad sounding chord due to an essential tone being missed. Along with no tuning at all, this is a cardinal sin. Repair the miscreant, always.

I think that I have some 11ths in "My Satin Doll". I just don't favor that particular form. It probably would tend to disrespect the melody note in certain instances.

My friend, Salma Hayek Lite, was extra charming this evening. Been a while since we dissected the Novellas. Need to learn "Mr. Lucky" even though S.H.L. insists on being a fate-denyer. Have a nice night.
