President Barack Obama may have had some off-the-cuff remarks about Kanye West's off-the-chain behavior at the awards ceremony the other night, but they apparently were off the record.
And the way Politico tells the story, the off-handed word that the president had for the off-the-script, rude rapper - "jackass'' - was off the Twitter account of ABC correspondent Terry Moran almost as quickly as he tweeted it.
Moran "caused quite a commotion tonight on Twitter after writing the following: "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a "jackass" for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential." Politico reports.
But "before Moran removed it, with over a million followers, the tweet quickly bounced around Twitter through various users. (There's still a record of the Moran tweet, on Obama and West however.)
An ABC spokesman explained the aborted tweet to Politico:
"In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview. This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again.''

I can finally agree with the guy, I just hope he doesn't back peddle. I think the WH should stand by the remarks show they have some back bone for a change.

Were the President's comments racially motivated? When will West go to the White House for a beer with Obama and Biden?

Takes one to know one

He finally said something I believe, and they censor it? What happened to the free press? Now Twitter and ABC are part of a censorship conspiracy?
Posted by: JO | September 15, 2009 9:31 AM
OMG! Obama (who is half white, you know) must be a racist!! LOL!
[in all seriousness, this would be the first time in awhile that I actually agree wholeheartedly with something he said!]
Posted by: BigDoggie | September 15, 2009 9:34 AM
Too bad the lap dog press can't report the truth when directed towards president Obama.
No wonder the average citizen doesn't believe 99% of what the media pukes out (both far right and left sides) about our president.

What's more interesting is how quickly ABC News scrubbed the Twitter post...shows they're in the tank for Obama. That's the *real* story, not the fact the Prez called Kanye a bad word.
Posted by: tuckeredout | September 15, 2009 9:48 AM
Doesn't the most powerful leader of the free world have more important things to do than get involved (ie take time to discuss) in some hip-hop/pop/country music controversy involving some pitiful thug? I'm concerned about the prez's priorities when our soldiers are dying, international thugs want to wipe U.S. off the map, not to mention countless economic issues facing all Americans here at home.
Posted by: LP | September 15, 2009 9:52 AM
I disagree with Obama on domestic issues like the economy and health care, however, I do agree with him on diplomacy and now Kanye West.
Posted by: Ejg | September 15, 2009 10:10 AM
They don't censor it you dope, it was off the record and should've never been reported. Before the days of Twitter and online blogs there was a process to which quotes were reported and if something is said off the record, it means exactly that, OFF THE RECORD.
and Red Blooded American, you must have the intelligence of a 5 yr old because that was the age of the last person I heard utter that phrase.
Posted by: Bones | September 15, 2009 10:20 AM
Nothing makes the right happier than seeing a minority criticized, nothing makes them angrier than seeing a white person criticized. Remember minorities, you must be meek, polite and quiet at all times. You do not have the same rights to make a jackass out of yourself that Rep. Wilson does.

It is refreshing to see our President make a human, non-political response. Let's face it, Kanye was acting like one and it is great of the prez to say so, even if it was off the record. http://www.stupidrightwingers.com
Posted by: Paul | September 15, 2009 10:39 AM
BO shoulda called Wilson the same. Keep it real Mr. President. That is all we ask (and expect).
Posted by: Cassius | September 15, 2009 10:46 AM
Kinda ironic that Obama has a Joe Wilson type moment..
Posted by: Stan Pitak | September 15, 2009 10:55 AM
Even though West acted like a jackass, it is good to see the right so level headed in their response. Kinda like cavemen.

Off the record? heh heh. What the hell does that mean? That concept is violated at will, but highly dependent on who it is. So it's the POTUS? The King gets a pass?
Posted by: Staber | September 15, 2009 11:12 AM
If the phrase fits, let the President use it, just like anyone else. And I hope that some people, like LP, for instance, can come to understand the fact that Mr. Obama being aware of the full range of the 'culture' and events happening in America takes nothing away from his attention to events around the globe, including our troops dying. He's only human. And, to borrow a phrase I heard a lot from the right during the Bush years: he's President of All of us. Cut him some slack.

LP It was more than some "hip hop country western controversy" It was about some muscle bound black man scaring the sh---t out of a white girl She was obviously both frightened and shocked. If it would have been a white man jumping on Beyounce (spelling) maybe Obama's comments wouldn't have been off record, I don't know. In either case it sucks and deserves Obama's response. It is more indicative of the hatred in this country than the Gates incident. If that wiould have been your daughter maybe you wouldn't have found it so trivial. Our homeland security depends on Aericans respecting one another.

LP...It wasn't a press conference on West for crying out loud, it was an off the cuff comment. If it was trivial to you, don't waste your time posting about it or it just seems disengenuous.

Oh no, not a Black man and a white girl!!!!!!
Your post is what's indictive of the hate in this country. Your dep racism and hatred is crystal clear.

Cut West some slack: he spoke the truth.

Ok, 1st the president made a comment about something that wasn’t political... yeah, he's a human being...people make comments. He isn’t some robot that is programmed to think, sleep, and eat politics. Some people are just going to be angry about what he does no matter what. 2nd, ummm minorities must me meek? Majorities are allowed to criticize minorities? Excuse me? When a minority is criticized its a national disaster...again, some people are just going to find a reason to be angry. Lastly, how is Obama's off the record comment anything like rep Wilson?? He didn’t scream out in the middle of a speech, he mentioned his opinion off the record and it made it to twitter, that’s a bit different. If anyone had a rep Wilson moment it was Kanye.

I agree with the president, this time.
I'll take a posse of Texas Rangers over Kanye West's "posse", any day. Too bad Kanye couldn't try to take the microphone from a Trace Atkins or a Toby Keith. THAT would be fun to watch!

Hey SNCC . . . get a life. Can't you argue anything other that the race card? Jeez, think of something else to say. You gotta have something else up your sleeve. That card is worn out from being used so much.

This really has nothing to do with censorship. When anyone sits down for interviews, press conferences, etc., ground rules are almost always set. The same was true for Bush. There is a sort of "gentlemen's aggreement" about what is on or off record. While freedom of the press is perhaps the most important element of our democracy, the members of the press also need to act with respect.
It's not as if Obama calling West a jackass endagers national security for crying out loud.

The "ravce card" iisn't mworn out as long as there are hatefilled bigots like Native son f still around. I will not stop criticizing such blatant racism. Why does seeing bigots like him criticized bother you so?
Posted by: SNCC | September 15, 2009 3:04 PM
Let's go back to a famous Kayne West quote: "Bush hates black people". I think it would be fitting to say "West hates white people". Especially southern white people.
As far as West the racist, it is interesting that one of BO's White House Chicago cronies had the racist perform at her daughter's 16 birthday party.
Why should ABC apologize for reporting?
Posted by: Bob | September 15, 2009 7:06 PM
You're right LP. I mean really how hard is it for him to distance himself form the epicenter of the celebrity vacuum. On record when addressing the passage of one of the world's biggest pop stars, Michael Jackson, he didn't grow up on MJ (Stevie Wonder was the soundtrack of his youth). However, it is imperative that the press (your enemy) has the opportunity ( even off the record) to catch you (POTUS) addressing current pop culture with some manly man talk in the mix. How eloquent. So swap-a-fly-Presidential. (laughing) Did he spit into a bucket too? (On a different note, Kanye is a bit of an ego, but I'm concerned. Where is this country going if people's apologies no longer count. Are we becoming more inhumane towards each other, both-ways. I mean, going back to the civility issue. It's becoming a one way street where those who are wronged against, adhering and requesting civility, are also the ones unwilling to recognize the civility in accepting people's flaws mistakes and apologies as genuine. Hmm.)

Kanye West a Jackass?
If it walks like a jackass, and talks like a jackass, its a jackass.
Posted by: Terry | September 15, 2009 11:07 PM
Bob, now don't tease us and vamp us....
Who was the Chicago crony?
What was performed?
Were you invited?
And for us seniors, just tell us briefly:
Who the hell is Kanye West?
Apart from the obvious point that he's a thug and a jackass.

Racism. I think there were racial undertones to that comment.
Posted by: recovering_democrat | September 16, 2009 11:21 AM
There likely were a bunch of Chicago kids early Sunday wishing they could be "adopted" by John Rogers and former wife Desiree Rogers -- even if just for one night, but in time for their 16th birthdays!
The reason? The Ariel Capital Management chairman and Peoples Energy president got good pal Kanye West to drop by daughter Victoria Rogers' "Sweet 16" party Saturday at the Park West -- surprising the University of Chicago Lab School student and her friends with an impromptu concert, beginning with his huge hit, "Diamonds."
The multi-Grammy-winning Chicago native even made fun of himself as a sea of kids whipped out their cell phone cameras, once the surprise was revealed -- joking, "Hey! I ...

What Kayne did showed absolute lack of control or respect and should be held accountable for his actions. What would have happened if someone were to interrupt his speech? Or if it had been Beyonce up there on stage? I think we all know what would happend! Obama was at least 100% accurate with the comment he made about Kayne.
