Man bites man, part II: Medicare pays: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva and updated

The California finger-biter was still at large last time we heard, but his victim - whose pinky was bitten off in a confrontation between health-care reform advocates and health-care reform protesters - apparently isn't so badly off after the fracas.

The man could have had the tip of his pinky sewn back on -- but elected not to have surgery.

And the 65-year-old victim has Medicare.

MoveOn.org, for its part, was doing its best to separate itself from the isolated incident of digital combat among hundreds of "peaceful candlelight vigils'' it staged around the country yesterday in support of health-care reform - including a "public option'' for people who cannot find insurance privately. (Sort of like Medicare for people under 65.)

And authorities today were searching for the activist accused of biting of the pinky of the counter-demonstrator at the MoveOn rally in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

""It all started with their difference in philosophy over healthcare reform," said Senior Deputy Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. The MoveOn rally in support of President Obama's healthcare plans also attracted several counter-protesters, and the two men got into a heated argument there and started fighting.
""At which point, one man bit off the left pinky of the other,'' Buschow said.

It initially was reported that the man let his legs do the walking to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, but the sheriff's office says he drove himself there for an emergency reattachment. (It also was reported that the man and his pinky tip were reunited, but CNN says tonight he chose not to have surgery.)

Ilyse Hogue, director of political advocacy and communications for MoveOn.org, called the incident "a regrettable act of violence" in a statement released this morning.

"While we do not have any more facts about what happened than what we saw in press accounts, MoveOn condemns violence in all forms," Hogue said. "We support the Ventura County sheriff's investigation into the situation. It is in our firm hope that this event does not detract from the tens of thousands who were out peacefully making their voices heard for health care reform and a public option."

Authorities were looking for a white male in his late 40s or 50s who was last seen wearing black shorts and a black shirt. "We're still trying to figure out who was the aggressor," Buschow said - though it seems his handkerchief might give him away.

Curiouser and curiouser the story gets.

First we learn that pro-Obamacare rallies are being ORGANIZED and FUNDED by MoveOn and Mr. Gotrocks himself, George Soros. This is a shock since we've been told that only anti-Obamacare protests were astroturf.

Now we have one of the biggies from MoveOn asking " that this event does not detract from the tens of thousands who were out peacefully making their voices heard ..."

Sorry, you're going to have to live with that domestic terrorist handle like the rest of us.

Oh and as for Medicare paying; well almost. They'll pay what they approve and the hospital will pad the bills of everyone who has insurance that they pay for to subsidize the victims' surgery.

The Corporate (health insurance lobby) Sponsored Teabaggers are not only foaming at the mouth, they're rabid.

What a bunch of stone cold stupid Repugnuts.

Americans Can't Trust Republicans With Medicare

You want a simple message to counter dishonest Republican fear mongering on healthcare? How's this, Republicans want to do away with Medicare. They've always wanted to take it away, and if they get half a chance in the future they'll get rid of it then. It's not hard to find examples of them saying so in their own words since Medicare started.

Saint Ronny Raygun in the 60s: "if you don’t [stop Medicare] ... you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free."

Republican Bob Dole openly bragged in 1996 that he was one of 12 House members who voted against creating Medicare. "I was there, fighting the fight, voting against Medicare ..."

GOPer nutjob/ "guru" Newt Gingrich said of Medicare, "We don't get rid of it in round one because we don't think that's politically smart, we don't think that's the right way to go through a transition, but we believe it's going to wither on the vine." He then went on to propose cutting Medicare by 14% and forcing millions of senior citizens to seek out private HMOs or go without, all to help make sure Medicare would 'wither on the vine.' And it continues right into present day.

Roy Blunt: "You could certainly argue that government should have never have gotten in the health care business, and that might have been the best argument of all, to figure out how people could have had more access to a competitive marketplace."

Former Republican House Majority Leader the Dick Armey reaffirmed this week on MtP that he thinks Medicare is "tryanny" and if that's not worrisome enough, he wants to "phase out" social security too.

Republicans want to do away with Medicare because they're against government healthcare, always have been, always will be. That's a core plank in GOP ideology, they hold it as dear and precious as some holy theology. Just yesterday, when asked about government healthcare, Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa said the "government is a predator, not a competitor" and went on to note he wouldn't vote for any healthcare reform bill as a matter of conservative principle, even if it has everything he wants in it. So when a Republican talks about "reform," says we must "get the government out of healthcare," pitches convoluted tax schemes and private accounts for the affluent, or spits out terms like "socialized medicine," like a dog whistle they all mean the same thing: getting rid of Medicare.

Forget about grandma being unplugged, grandma won't be able to afford being seen, much less be able to pay for hospital admission. Grandma is on her own. All so that conservative zillionaires and their Republican congressional lackeys can save an extra 0.0145 of their gross, bloated paycheck, the same flat rate we all invest to keep millions of senior citizens alive and healthy today.

Ha ha ha!!!

So good ol' Medicare, the kind of gov't run healthcare that this nut was protesting against, saved his finger?

Ha ha ha!!!

Maybe now these bought and paid for delusional Teabagger whackjobs will learn that's it's not a good idea to shout down people and stick your fingers in their face, especially when you don't know what the hell you're talking about.....but I doubt it.

If I go to health care townhall and some rapid anti health care Teabagger sticks his/her finger in my face I'm not only going to bite it off, I'm going to put it on my mantle and keep it as a trophy.

leave it to a repugnican to refuse to vote for a bill that has everything in it he wants. again, only a white guy is capable of such ignorance and ego-based stupidity. you repugnanticans are so holy and high on yourselves. the party of marriage (does ensign's 38D bimbo ex-girlfriend trophy consider herself part of the marriage?) - you're legends in your own minds. i don't defend the finger biter (did it taste like chicken?), either - had it been me, the perpetrator would be enjoying his gender transformation now. for the life of me i can't understand why medicare paid to reconnect the 65 year old's pinky .... he denounces public run health care. he shouldn't be entitled to use it for his viagra or cialis prescriptions or his penil implant surgery. he should have to go out and buy his own health care - and turn off the guy's social security - right now. he doesn't want government run programs to interfere with his life. so take them away from him. please, moron, move to texas so you can secede with the rest of the state. that way the feds will take away all federal law enforcement, highway funds, school funds, public assistance, medicare, medicaid, etc., and reprogram the money to other states. Please, Texas, leave already. Don't let the door hit you in the -----. Take your repugnicans with you, and faux, and glenn the mor(m)on. Leave the F-16s behind. The rest of the country will plan to use them against you because you are a threat - you have WMD - white male dumbness disease.

So the T-Bagger/Birther victim now has a 'gubbmint/socialist' finger?

Guess he can never go to John Galt's secret island. Too bad.

Swamp finds the biting off of a finger a humorous incident. Leftist violence is apparently funny to its supporters. Had it been the other way, we could just hear the accusations of brown shirts, Nazis, KKK, et al.

The stuff of urban legend, Part II.

Or is that Medicare Part II?

Anyhow, fingers are well vascularized and well known exsanguinators.

I doubt the finger was really "bitten off".

Either way, the paid disrupters of public meetings are just a generation away from the Pinkerton agents and strikebreakers who used to shoot up crowds of strikers.

Interesting thug tactics from the health insurance gang.

Just another reason why they need to be cut down to size.

With 16+%of GDP going through their coffers, it's easy to see why they would be hiring these thugs and disrupters.

Just keep them far, far away from anywhere President is speaking.

Silva is trumping thevirtues of Medicare because of teh care provides. Yes, car was provided by the doctor and hospital staff. The bill will be paid by Medicare. Probably, the doctor and hospital will recieve less than they would have if the victim would have had private insurance.

Medicare may pay the bills for now, but it is currently acturially bankrupt.

As a prvious poster said, if the victime would have been in a country with single-payer medicine, he would still be in line wwaiting for service.

This guy fits the Republican "base" profile PERFECTLY!

He's out protesting against gov't run healthcare.....the same kind of gov't run health care that he's depending on to save his finger with, ha ha ha!

It's no wonder Republicans are against funding for Education, they need to keep their dumber than a bag of rocks base voting against their own well being (tax cuts for the rich, warmongering etc), otherwise they'd cease to exist as a political party alltogether.

Mark, people are FORCED to pay into Medicare from the time they begin work. It AUTOMATICALLY comes out of your paycheck. You have NO choice but to pay into it. Hence, since one pays hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year into the system over a 30-, 40-year period, you can bet your left wing tushy that you're going to use the program. But, Mark, MOST seniors also buy SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE, because Medicare doesn't cover it all. And, seniors still have to pay into the system.
I also find it interesting that you and your left wing ilk find it so humorous that one of your cannibalistic own bites fingers off people he/she disagrees with.
The media rightly crucifed Tyson for biting off Holyfield's ear. But when a loony lefty runs amok and gnaws on people's body parts, all of a sudden the Corrupt Media thinks it's cute.

Good thing for him the Death Panel is on summer recess.

Yeah, and it works great. Just ask the Teabagger goofball who had his finger saved by it today.

Lil' Johnny Diapers, don't you have an appt with Palin's death panel today?

According to the GOPer deather nutjobs, if Stephen Hawking had been born and raised in the UK, he would have been euthanized, the victim of Britain's National Health Service which would have deemed his life "worthless" because of his handicaps.
.
http://www.americablog.com/2009/08/stephen-hawking-proud-american.html

There was only one problem with that Wingnut deather theory: Hawking was born and raised in the UK. Indeed, he is now fighting back, crediting NHS with saving his life.

"I owe my life to the NHS': Stephen Hawking tells US to stop attacking health service
Professor Stephen Hawking has defended the NHS after its severe criticism during the American political debate over health care reforms.
The physicist spoke up for the NHS after the Republican Right in America claimed it was 'evil' and 'Orwellian' in a direct attack on President Barack Obama's plans to overhaul health care in the U.S.
Critics of the president have said his plans would introduce a 'socialist' system like Britain's.
Prof Hawking, who suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease, said: 'I wouldn't be here today if it were not for the NHS.
'I have received a large amount of high quality treatment without which I would not have survived."
.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1205953/NHS-branded-evil-Orwellian-high-level-US-politicians.html#ixzz0OGqrl0GM

I don't know what's more impressive about the Wingnut deather morons? The fact that they are willing to peddle such easily disprovable garbage with a straight face, or that they have managed to convince a few Democrats that they are worthy negotiating partners?

Darksyde
"we believe it's going to wither on the vine..And it continues right into present day"
&"You could certainly argue that government should have never have gotten in the health care business.he wants to "phase out" social security too"
Thats because it's failing MISERABLY, what you put in to SS now, you will never see, it's withering on the vine because the tree is dead. The Government needs to do it's job, GOVERN, not compete in private industry.
"Republicans want to do away with Medicare because they're against government healthcare, always have been, always will be."
They are against government intruding in OUR LIVES. You want this Government to intrude in you life, fine. It will NOT how ever intrude in mine!
"government is a predator, not a competitor" and went on to note he wouldn't vote for any healthcare reform bill as a matter of conservative principle, even if it has everything he wants in it. get the government out of healthcare,"
Good he shouldn't vote for this intrusion, thats the point... are you getting all of this yet?

"pitches convoluted tax schemes and private accounts for the affluent, or spits out terms like "socialized medicine," like a dog whistle they all mean the same thing: getting rid of Medicare..All so that conservative zillionaires... bloated paycheck"
So you are saying the Medicare is socialized medical coverage, good, you're getting it, Socialism.

BTW: I'm a conservative and I am no where near "affluent, zillionaires" or have a "bloated paycheck." Thats a misconseption from the left of a conservative
It's fundamental principles of republicans that this country was built on, so that you can come here and rant your socialist BS to your hearts content and that your individual liberties are upheld, there are free markets for you to have a job and earn as much money as you can, and enjoy the fruits of prosperity as long as you work for it.
Get the idea, yet?

Really? Then why do you Republican nuts keep sending me the bill for your phony wars (Iraq) and your tax cuts for the richest 1%?

Get lost, Major Crackpot...

Sure Medicare paid!!!
But once obama takes 600 Billion away from our senior citizens and Medicare...this poor gentleman would be left waiting in a dirty room hours on end to see a doctor while his severed finger turns green....his finger is fine now because 50 Million illegals and losers weren't infront of him getting "free" medical attention on our tax dime.
Say NO---To obamacare.

Paulo

Support ObamaCare, or we'll bite your finger off.

Meanwhile, in the real world, unemployment soared to 9.7%, a 26-year high..... See www.drudge.com for the details.

My pinkie, my pinkie, my kingdom for a pinkie but I guess he has that terrible Medicare a “Single-payer health care insurance” what a hypocrite. Did the little pinkie cry "Wee-wee-wee!" all the way home (or I should say “Fake News”)? It real should have been his right pinky finger that would have been a better story. He takes two punches and (as usual) tries to shove something down someone’s throat and gets his pinkie bitten off, now he plays victim. They are haters not debaters.

A pretty good example of why I call many on the Left, the Loony Left:

As usual when dealing with the Loons on the Left, their derangement gets in the way of the facts and common sense. First of all, Paul, the 65-year-old man who got his finger bitten off by a rabid member of the Left, a moveon.org member to boot (and they don't get much more deranged than a moveoner), was the one who threw two punches, not the pansy lefty. Second, as I've noted time and again, folks HAD to pay into the Medicare system and we have since the 1960s and continue to have to pay into it. So, when you HAVE to pay into a system, you're going to use it because you're money is already in there. It's sort of like getting a meal at a fast food restuarant. You have to give them your money before you get your food. So, once you get your food and paid for it, you're going to eat it to get your money's worth.
Third, the fraud and waste in Medicare is quite large. Insurance companies are good at weeding out the fraud, the government is not (government often is fraud anyway: Stroger, Blago, Ryan, Clinton, Daley, Quinn, Madigan, waste, abuse, etc.). Fourth, regardless of all of this, biting off someone's finger or body part is not cool. It wasn't cool when Tyson did it. It wasn't cool when Jeffrey Dahmer killed and chopped his victims and it wasn't cool when the moveon.org cannibal did it.

Sigh......

Trickled On,

In the United States - at least as of today, he would have been treated at the Emergency room even if he didn't have health insurance.

Terry,
And we all would pay through cost shifting.

"Johnny Knoxville": You need to understand the whole story. Without outside contributions (including American) is it likely Hawkings would not have survived 1985.

http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=336265511242167

It seems the NHS is not all that it is cracked up to be. No one has ever countered these facts.

Rick

Socialist,

We all pay either way - either as you say thru cost shifting or thru higher taxes to fund gov't run health care.
