House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from San Francisco, invoked the memory of a violent juncture in her city's history today in calling for a cooler public debate.

Across town, the White House voiced confidence in the ability of all to conduct a civil debate.

The tone of the current health-care debate concerns Pelosi, the speaker said today in pointing to the "frightening rhetoric" over gay rights that consumed San Francisco during the 1970s, when Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated.

People voicing hateful rhetoric today, she said, will have to take responsible for any "incitement'' they foment.

The debate over health care reform, which sparked heated arguments and gun-toting protesters at congressional "town-hall'' meetings during the summer, has spilled into the Capitol, where a South Carolina Republican, Rep. Joe Wilson, accused President Barack Obama of lying about the implications of his plan during an address to a joint session of Congress. Wilson later apologized to the White House, but the Democrat-controlled House voted to admonish Wilson.

Pelosi grew visibly emotional at her weekly news conference today.

"The balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance,'' the speaker said.

Earlier this year, she and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) denounced some of the most unruly protests at the health-care town halls as "un-American.''

"I have some concerns about some of the language being used, because I saw this myself in the late 70s in San Francisco,'' Pelosi said. "This kind of rhetoric was very frightening, and it created a climate where violence took place.

"I wish that we could all curb our enthusiasm in the statements that we make and understand that some of the ears that it's falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume."

Former San Francisco Supervisor Dan White was convicted in 1977 of the murders of the openly gay Supervisor Milk and Mayor Moscone.

White's lawyers maintained that White, who had said that the city was "going kind of downhill,'' was mentally ill. He committed suicide in 1985.

Milk was among those awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom this year for his pursuit of civil rights for gay Americans.

"Our country is based on people being able to say what they believe,'' Pelosi said today, "but I also believe they must take responsibility for any incitement they may cause."

At the White House, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs today said:

"The way that a lot of political discourse gets covered in this country is covered at the edges. It's covered by the loudest and shrillest on either end of the political spectrum. That's what tends to get covered -- on both sides.

"I think what the president believes is we can have these types of very passionate debates, but do so in a way that is civil and respectful of all of those that are participating in these debates, acknowledging a difference in opinion even if that's not the opinion with which you come to that debate with,'' he said.

"I hope that's the way that we can deal with these problems, because the president and I think many people involved in seeking solutions for our country believe that we have a series of very big challenges, some of which have festered for a very long time, that have to be addressed. And that if all of our time and our energy is taken up in the exercise of yelling at each other, there's very little time left over for coming to a sensible agreement on how to move forward in addressing those problems.''

Speaker Pelosi should heed her own advice.

To worry about rising deficits, higher taxes, sky-rocketing national debt and the possibility of inflation not seen since the days of Jimmie Carter is not "un-America".

She should also advise Harry Reid that those who raise concerns about the liberal agenda are not "Nazi's".

She can also advise ex-President Carter that those that speak out are not "racists".

We are just ordinary, everyday Americans who are expressing our fears.

I assume everyone is laughing at Pelosi: "Restraint for thee, but not for me".

How many bombs has she thrown in the past 10 years?

Rick

This from the same woman who called those voicing their opinions at townhall meetings and TEA party rallies as "brown-shirts," "Nazis," and other vile names. The same woman who said the CIA lied to her.
Nancy, take your meds please.

John D,

...And the CIA later admitted that they did indeed withhold and fudge info provided to Congress.

By the way, you complaining about namecalling is a joke, right?

Warren Zevon wroye a song about them.

They're just some incitable boys.

Nancy got the ball rolling. Surely she hasn't forgotten the insults she was throwing around. When people push back she demands others "curb their enthusiasm?" Once again she displays her lack of ability to do her job. She's a laughing stock.

"She can also advise ex-President Carter that those that speak out are not "racists".We are just ordinary, everyday Americans who are expressing our fears."

And when is the Republican leadership going to advise Glenn Beck and Newt Gingrich that Obama and Justice Sotomayor aren't racists? Oh, that's right, never.

How long did it take the right wing lunatic fringe to go from: "if you criticize the President you are a traitor" to "school children should not trust the President" ??

A little over two months - Nov 4, 2008 to Jan 20, 2009.

The Republican party is nothing more than a hypocritcal pile of corporate enabling scum.

She tried to pass a bill before the August that was going to cost $1.5 Trillion before anyone ( lawmakers, or voters) could read it, analyze it or understand it... and then wonder why people get irritaed.

Now- the brain dead speaker of the house feigns concern over the rhetoric that she invited?

Amazing -

Keep in mind that these right wing lunatic fringe mouth-breathers who are saying all of this racist garbage about President Obama are the same ones who were just carrying signs calling Obama Hitler and saying that Acorn groups and his "arrogant" wife (Michelle) should be sent back to "their own" country and be stripped of their rights.

More seriously, these people are a perfect example of the modern Republican racist. They don't go around calling black people "boy" (to their faces) and they certainly don't think of themselves as bigots. But in their minds, racial minorities are dangerous barbarians who are threatening to destroy their way of life. Hence, when they find themselves in a group of loud Teabaggers, they see it as a test of their own manhood to "put them down." (Of course, that's why they need all those guns.)

A black president is threatening to them, even if they don't really understand it, because while he is unquestionably a very accomplished individual in anyone's estimation, the loyalty he inspires among African Americans frightens them --- and his sometime feints to popular culture and black solidarity make them very, very uncomfortable. That's why the right wing's obsession with ACORN has such resonance with the "base". In their little pea sized brains the believe that a "black army" is forming. They are living in a new world where racism is a minority position. But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist or that it doesn't find political expression in some powerful ways. It behooves Progressives to be vigilent about this and keep these impulses in check with frequent reminders that it is not acceptable in modern America to be a racist.

It's also obvious that nativism and immigration are the great racial undercurrent of the moment and they have long been the animating feature of toxic right wing populism. We ignore this stuff at our peril.

I agree, Democrats need to stop paying attention to what some closet or openly racist Republicans may or may not think of President Carter's statement.

95%+ of the problems President Barack Obama is dealing with is because of the political and financial disaster George W. Bush left for him.

I say, good for President Carter and Nancy Pelosi for speaking out. It's about time someone actually called a spade a spade!

Speaker Pelosi has no creditability which she has proved over and over.

If Republicans want to argue that the birther, Kenyan, Muslim, un-American, monkey, witchdoctor attacks against President Obama, made by the elected and unelected arms of the Republican Party, have anything to do with policy disagreements then let him try make that laughable case. But they can take their fake outrage and straw man arguments about being called out on it and shove it.

"The balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance,''

That's lib-speak for "We're going to stifle dissent by pretending there's a safety concern."

I've been to three of these "Tea Parties" and saw not the first hint of violence. These demonstators may be opinionated and noisy, but they're NOT violent.

Nice try, Comrade Pelosi.

PrePuke,
I've yet to find ONE Republican who has actually read any of the health care bills and wasn't already planning on voting NO on any health care bill whatsoever before this process even started.

The Repugs, just like the Blue Dogs, are in the back pocket of the Big Health Care lobby and they want to make sure that they can keep stuffing health care lobbyist campain cash in their pants pockets while idiots like you defend them.

This sort of statement should come as no surprise knowing the type of person and tactics used by Nancy Pelosi. This is, in fact, a tactic. Everything this woman does is a tactic. Everything the liberal left does is a tactic.

This tactic, like most others, is psychological manipulation. Just like the "racist" charge, it is designed to stiffle opposition from those who might be afraid of defamatory labels or some form of retribution for their actions. Also, she attempts to position herself as a "voice of reason" in a passionate debate.

Of course, this is all hypocrisy. Nancy Pelosi is a fraud. She is the farthest thing from a stateswoman that congress will probably every see. Thankfully, right-thinking people with common sense in America know this before she even opens her mouth.

Everytime Nancy Pelosi opens her mouth, she embarasses herself. She is a viral fungus on our nation.

My message to Nancy: We will NOT curb our enthusiasm. We are NOT racist. We ARE true Americans. We WILL defeat you. You know this already, and that is why you attack and dismiss (classic liberal tactic). You are incompetent. You are powerless to defend your position so you resort to ad hominem attacks and strawman arguments.

The day you are out of government will be a true INDEPENDENCE DAY for America.

Hey, Ignorant Janet -

Are you so clueless that you did not know that NAZI stand for "National SOCIALIST"?

That the full name for the party was the German National Socialist Workers Party?

Did you not know that both Hitler and Mussolini were for years glorified by people like Joe Kennedy and the New York Times and Time Magazine, for their SOCIALIST agenda prior to WWII? That fascists took over banks in their country? That fascists wanted to restrict political talk on the radio?

Or that fascists controlled major corporations (like auto makers)? Or that fascists hated Christians and ridiculed them at ever opportunity?

Or that Mussolini claimed that "everything is within the State and ... neither individuals or groups are outside the State" was key to understanding fascism?

They sure sound a lot like what Obama has to offer. Planning on getting YOUR brown shirts ready?

People, you will see this types of post repeatedly from liberal leftists. They post unsupported nonsense as if it is fact and then wait for you to prove them wrong and defend an opposing postion. Then, you're in their game and the spin begins. My advice: no need to debate on nonsense. Ask the liberal to solicit a debate with lucid facts and cogent arguments before you agree to discuss anything. Otherwise, what's the point?

So when lefties protest loudly (and, I would add, often violently), it's "dissent" and therefore "patriotic", but when conservatives do the same thing it's "incitement" by "un-American" "Nazis" with "swastikas". Is that what I'm hearing? Wasn't Pelosi the one cheering just this sort of behavior just a few short years ago when it was directed at Bush? Go figure.

Glenn Beck seems to be feeling sorry for himself for having brought down a brickload of opprobrium -- and fleeing advertisers -- for having called President Obama a "racist" with "a deep-seated hatred for white people".

So he brought on the big guns to defend his teary-eyed self: Rush Limbaugh. No black hole emerged from the critical mass of so much wingnuttery on one program, but it did produce a yawning maw of first-tier fearmongering, colored with a garish streak of self-pity.

Really? So you have some sort of polling process that allows you to say this with any credibility? You have this kind of access to congress to know , not only who has or has not read the bill, but also which ones would have voted no?

But lets assume your right - SO WHAT! Are you saying that it is ok that DEMS would vote for this nonsense without reading it is ok, since there are REPS that were never going to vote for it?

Why do you post nonsense like this- it only makes you look like a stooge. Go away - your embarassing yourself.

You've gotta love the way the Teabaggers and their "leader" Glenn Beckkk play rope a dope.

They run around calling Obama and Dems every name in the book and they spend the entire month of August foaming at the mouth and shouting down people at health care townhalls, and then when they get called out on it for being what they are (Right Wing Hate Mongers), they fake outrage and pretend that they are the ones who are being persecuted.

"antacid": you need some. Republicans have proposed at least 5 plans to address the two major issues: preexisting conditions and the cost of coverage. But, Pelosi and Baucus would not let them see the light of day. If there are at least 5 proposals, then your foolish little claim that no Republican planned to vote for any health care bill is completely shot down. Not only are your wings gone, you have holes in your fuselage.

Rick

"Not only are the Repug Teabaggers nasty, they're also violent."

Wow, you libs are really reaching. Since when does "armed" equate with "violent"? The gentleman in the interview may be a proponent of gun rights, but I think you bear the burden of proof to make the leap to "violent."

I'm waiting....

Rick, You've been asked before to provide a link to a single Republican proposal that actually takes direct action to help the poor get health insurance. Not proposals to deregulate the insurance companies so that they can make even more money, or to shield negligent doctors from malpractice claimd, but prepoposals that directly address the problems of people who cannot afford healtth insurance. Can you do that Rick? Do the Republicans have any proposals that would aid the poor instead of insurance company profits and wealthy doctors?

Kenny Bunkhead, the CIA DID NOT say that it fudged info. But I'm not surprised you have your facts wrong. What you are referring to is when Panetta revealed a CIA plan to assassinate people like bin Laden and Cheney wanted it kept from Congress until it was at least implemented. The thing is, it was never implemented, so Congress was never informed. This then was used by the Demoncraps and the Corrupt Media as an excuse to support Peloony's contention the CIA lied to her. Oh, and Kenny, the FACTS prove that on the issue of enhanced interrogation, Peloony was INFORMED and changed her story about she knew or didn't know so many times that she had no clue what she was talking about anymore.
And Dumb Dumb Janet: we are not the ones acting like Nazis or brown shirts, that would be the losers on the Left. Go back in your hole and please for the sake of mankind, keep that bazoo shut!

Ignorance knows no bounds when you're talking about an angry, hurt, demoralized Republican.

Remembering back to the post-Bush election, I can't recall a single democrat or liberal who loudly proclaimed that anything this new President did would be met with such organized hatred and scorn. Nor can I remember any groups EVER organizing to take down that President for anything he said, let alone what he did.

Democrats are different from republicans, and not simply in ideology. The Republican mindset is structured to fear first, think much later. There is a herd mentality that hasn't been seen in such fervor since the Germans rallied around Hitler. They seem to thrive when ignorance is the order of the day.

I just don't get it, but then again I don't really care.

Those who want to hate Obama because you couldn't evolve enough to vote for him, screw you. Go crawl under a rock for all I care. Your ignorance, racism and poor judgement are evident to see every time you open your mouths.

Want to keep your kids out of school because you fear this governmental "boogieman" is going to fill your children's minds with left-leaning, alien ideas? Why not keep them out for good. They are in a "socialist" education system (most of them), unless you were too ignorant to realize that.

Want to keep convincing yourself your ideas are valid, your previous President was valid and your non-inclusive ways are more "American", well, go right ahead. The rest of us will ignore you not because we're bad people but because you deserve it. You've shown your ugly side - and even you're too self-absorbed and insular to really see how ugly and un-American that side is.

The idea that you would shield your children from the President of the United States because he intends to advise them to study and work hard would be just as pathetic if democrats did the same thing during Bush.

The big difference is a democrat wouldn't. We actually value education - even when it's educating ourselves on something we disagree with. That's what being an educated adult does to you.

Be an ignorant loser. Go ahead. What you don't know is that the rest of us know you're that already

The Wingnuts are not just acting like Nazi's and Brown Shirts, they're also racists and bigots. Everything they are saying about Obama is filled with coded racial phraseology. That's why the Republican party demographic is changing toward, older, white, less educated southerners. That's pretty much all they have left, the sane Republicans have already departed.

How big was it, Nancy?

This is preemptive on her part, I think they (the left and her) will continue to race bait and spew insults at the right. They will call out their henchmen SEIU et. al. and then if and when violence ensues Pelosi will say "I told you so" and "It's the astroturfers".

I enjoy reading all the liberal attack and dismiss propoganda. The icing on the cake for me is to see the elitist arrogance driving it all. Liberals are helplessly lost in a maze of philosophical pragmatism, humanism, scientism, and Darwinism. In short, they are their own self-realized, self-proclaimed, self-verified, naturally evolving deities. When you disagree with them, you incur their sanctimonious wrath. How dare you, you uneducated God-fearing ontologist, voice your feeble-minded dissent to any of their infallible, scientifically surmised, and irrefutable facts.

Well, here's the thing: "Where is the wise man? Where is the teacher? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?" 1 Corinthians 1:20

Pelosi's bomb throwing language is inflaming ordinary and average Americabs to further protest. People who had been quietly sitting on the sidelines are getting up and joing in the protest due to her insults of middle America and haughty rule of the US congress.
