President Barack Obama, who has faced a lot of criticism from some quarters which former President Jimmy Carter views as racially motivated, had an answer for that in his talk with the Late Show's David Letterman today.

Asked by Letterman in the taping of tonight's show today if his opponents are motivated by racial hatred, Obama said:

"It's important to realize that I was actually black before the election... This is true."

"How long have you been a black man?" Letterman replied.

"The American people, I think, gave me this extraordinary honor and that tells you, I think, a lot about where the country's at,'' Obama said. "I actually think that what's happened is that whenever a president tries to bring about significant changes, particularly during times of economic unease, then there is a certain segment of the population that gets very riled up.

"And it happened - FDR was called a socialist and a communist; JFK, there were all kinds of names hurled at him; Ronald Reagan, when he came into office, he was moving in a different direction and people were sure that he was bringing the country down.''

Letterman, who was stood up by Obama's rival, Sen. John McCain, during the presidential campaign, and let him know about it on air, made a few jokes today about the president's arrival, the first sitting president to appear on the Late Show - though this was Obama's own personal sixth stop on Letterman's set.

At one point, Letterman put a presidential seal over his Late Show mug - though he posted it upside down.

And, while Letterman acknowledged that Obama's job is harder than his, their exchange wasn't limited to levity. They have covered some serious matters here, in the program that CBS will air tonight. First, some of their lighter moments:

Letterman was ready with his "Top Ten reasons why President Obama agreed to appear on the show.

10. Heard the lady with the heart shaped potato was gonna be here.
9. Thought it would be fun to watch someone else get heckled.
8. Something to do with that whole cash for clunkers deal
7. Every president since Teddy Roosevelt has done it
6. Someone offers you 600 bucks, you take it ladies and gentlemen
5. We told him Megan Fox would be here.
4. Needed some time to hang out before check in time at his hotel
3. I have no idea .
2. Said yes, without thinking, like Bush did with Iraq.
1. Wanted to congratulate Dave on the big Emmy win.

The president let slip a few personal details about his daughters, an off-limits topic elsewhere. He disclosed the name of a movie he saw recently with his wife. And he confessed that yes, he is still crazy about nurses.

The information -- which Obama shared with Letterman in a guest appearance taped Monday afternoon -- isn't exactly breaking news. But the president isn't into making new news these days, because he's still trying to hammer home an old message.

And, in fact, Letterman let him talk about his favorite topic, health care, for a good stretch of the show, something Obama aides didn't even have to haggle over in advance. With five full segments at his disposal, Letterman was content to listen as Obama talked about the plight of the uninsured and about his ideas for making things better.

The Late Show band played Hail to the Chief with timpani drums. The president strode out in a navy suit, white shirt, blue tie.

"I like the cup," Obama said, sitting down... "The main reason I'm here... I want to see that heart shaped potato."

At which prompt Letterman walked over to a woman from Missouri who had been on the show two years before with the spud. Letterman collected it and handed it over to Obama. The president put the potato in his pocket.

"Family is doing wonderfully,'' Obama said. "Poor Sash, she was in second grade, and in this new school, she had homework, we decided there wasn't going to be any fancy camps during the summer. they basically just goofed off during the summer...
Lettermen asked about all the stress of having men with guns around the place. "They actually go over to other kids houses,'' Obama said. "The parents get frisked.''

They shared some photographs, including one of the president running his Portuguese water dog, Bo, with a football.

And they talked about that "vitriol'' in the public debate these days which Obama mentioned in his Sunday news show talks over the weekend. " Whenever a president tries to bring about significant change, .there is a certain segment of the population that gets very riled up.'' Obama said. "FDR was called a socialist and a communist; Ronald Reagan, whenhe came into office -- people were sure that he was bringing the country down.

"What has been missing from the conversation is that the overwhelming majority of people, Republicans and Democrats, they just want to see some common sense,'' the president said. "I think they are turned off by the shouting and the yelling."

The crowd applauded.

Obama started in on health care.

"If I'm not feeling well, I go to the CBS nurse,'' Letterman said.

" Everybody should have a CBS nurse,'' Obama said. "I'm sure the nurse is a wonderful person. Wwhat we have right now is at least 30 million who don't have any insurance... If we are on the same path that we are right now...5-10 years ... far more Americans are not going to have health insurance .''

"Your job is more difficult than my job,'' Letterman suggested. "That's what I've learned here tonight.''

"Whenever you invoke Great Britain or Canada ...people shudder,'' Letterman said. "I'm not a socialist, but it doesn't sound that bad to me. ''

"It doesn't sound bad to Canadians, they are perfectly happy with their system,'' Obama said. "But each country is different... Every other advanced nation provides coverage for all their folks. We can find a uniquely American way of accomplishing this.''

Letterman asked about Afghanistan.

"Our troops are performing at an extraordinary level in both Iraq and Afghanistan,'' Obama said. "Look Iraq will not be perfect, but thanks to the sacrifice of those who fought, the Iraqis will have a chance to create the kind of functioning democracy...

"The folks who killed 3,000 Americans, they were based in Afghanistan. They have been driven into the foothills...but they are still there. Although they are weakened...they are still there ...

"The country is weary of the war,'' Obama said. "What I'm trying to do at this point is to make sure that .... all these elements, that we have got a coherent strategy that can work... I've got to make sure that the policy in place was worthy of their sacrifice. that's something that we're going to worth through systematically. Not going to make a decision about any further troop deployments.

"What we cant lose sight of is that the reason we went there in the first place and the number one threat that we continue to face,'' the president said. "Extremists who are willing to slaughter innocents... make sure they are destroyed, their networks are dismantled.''

With special thanks to the fine pool reporting of the Washington Post's Michael Shear, on duty at the Late Show.

well, here we go again, Mr. Great uniter. Can we all drink some beer and sing songs now.

Can someone tell me just where is this "One America" is that we were all spoke to about.

Does Obama EVER shut up?!

As much as elected Republicans may try to hide their bigoted and racist attacks on President Obama by letting other Wingnuts fling the mud (Glenn Beckkk Gingrich, Limbaugh, Pat Buchanan, Lou Dobbs etc), that distinction isn't going to be made by Latinos and Black people watching on the sidelines. They know who pulls the strings in the modern GOP, and the nastier they behave, the more they'll lose a demographic (Latino) that is projected to be 30 percent of the American population in 2050.

Without young voters or Latinos and Black people, the GOP can't win. They've done a fantastic job of alienating the former with their opposition to equality, and they're about to finish off the latter courtesy of their racism towards President Obama.

Considering that the Census Bureau expects the nation to be only 46 percent non-Hispanic, single-race white in 2050, the GOP's continued shoddy treatment of people who aren't angry old white guys like "President" Newt or Boss Limbaugh is only solidifying their journey toward fringe status.

Does Obama ever stay in the Oval Office and do any real work? A lot of people hate Letterman, are they Racist? No! They hate him because he’s not funny and stupid too.

Republicans elected and supported a guy (Bush) who may go down in history as the worst president ever. Bush has a horrible track record... and the Republicans know that, and it embarrasses them. When they look at what Bush did to the country, and know that they put him in office and supported him, they feel pretty stupid. I mean, seriously, if you'd been a Bush-booster and got that kind of result, wouldn't you have to think, "Jeez, maybe I'm stupid and have incredibly poor judgement and shouldn't be trusted to pick our leaders anymore"? So, because of that humiliation, they want to force Obama to fail. That way, they won't have to be the only stupid people in the country... or, so they think.

Also, they saw the protests against Bush, and now they want "their turn," even if they have to trump up ridiculous things to get it. The main difference is, Democrats protested Bush for things he'd done. Republicans are protesting Obama for fantasies about what they think he might do (thanks to idiots like Glenn Beck and Limbaugh who feed them their daily dose of stupid).

The next time we have a Republican President I'm going to start ripping that guy the minute he takes the oath office. I'm going to rip him every day, every chance I get, about everything from the clothes he wears (fascist uniform?) to the amount of food he eats during a typical day (stealing from the middle class and poor?) etc. And believe me, the next Repug Pres will be a doughy white guy because the cretins who make up todays Repug party see white people as being the superior race.

The Repugs are creating their own bad karma right now.

If Republicans want to argue that the birther, Kenyan, Muslim, un-American, monkey, witchdoctor attacks against President Obama, made by the elected and unelected arms of the Republican Party, have anything to do with policy disagreements then let him try make that laughable case. But they can take their fake outrage and straw man arguments about being called out on it and shove it.

This is pushing the point where disagreement is being looked at as racially motivated.

People will be afraid to disagree to speak up, which is not good in a democracy.

Poor manners in interupting someone is not racial hatred.

Come on BO, how are you going to keep your leftwing, Michael Moore, radical wacko base with comments like that? Pretty soon you'll be trying to tell them that you actually have to have capitalism to create jobs, and they'll never believe that.

Does anyone remember a very chubby black comedian who said "If you think I'm fat, you're prejudiced!"

That's exactly what's happening here - disagree with the President or dislike a proposal and you're a racist.

Funny how similar to if you disagree with Bush, you were unpatriotic, unamercan, and a communist. Funny........you still are flinging it.

You're Repug Wall Street heroes did a great job of "creating jobs" during the Bu$hco reign of error.....NOT!

Did Barry discuss how he profiled the white cop in Cambridge, Mass.? Or did Barry just ramble stupidly on the show.

The hypocrisy from the Right Wing Lunatic Fringe is hilarious!

"President Bush famously, if unjustifiably, casts himself as Ronald Reagan's disciple. But in at least one way, he has surpassed his master.

According to the meticulous records kept by CBS Radio White House correspondent Mark Knoller, Bush on Monday lodged his 879th day spent in whole or in part at Camp David or his sprawling estate in Crawford, Tex."

President OBummer,

actually exploited and chastised Hillary about her proposed mandatory participation for all Americans. Per her national healthcare plan.

Anyone remember what he said during the campaign?

I am starting to beleive Joe WIlson is correct...

Truly migrating to President OBummer in my book.

It's nice to see Pres Obama out and about defending himself against the right wing fake outrage slime machine.

I get tired of seeing the same old has been, corrupt Republican liars like Newt and Tommy "Bug Man" Delay on my TV screen everynight.

there are two types of people who disagree with Obama--those who can admit that there is some racial prejudice against him yet feel comfortable knowing that they are not in that camp, and those who assume that when the term "racial prejudice" comes up that it's directed at them. Not everything is about you, you know. Unless you want it to be...

FREEDOM WORKS (a big money health insurance corporate lobbyist group) and FAUX (a fake news outlet) are the one's who have stoked the Teabaggers and they've created most of the hate against President Obama. The right never does anything for people, they do things to people.

The hilarious part about all of this nonsense is how they manage to get all of those low and middle income Republican simpletons to go along with them and go out and protest against their own well being.

Without Freedom Works and Faux, does anyone seriously believe that all of those doughy red faced middle aged white guys would be out shouting down health care town halls and marching on DC with misspelled Teabagger signs?

When we all get over laughing so hard we can't catch our breath....how about the story of how Obama is trying to throw a fellow black dem under the bus because the dems are afraid that Patterson is not strong enough to win re-election.

There is solidarity for you. Kumbaya Gov. Patterson you blind idiot. Thanks for keeping the seat warm, but you can't beat whoever the Republicans bring out. We need Mario Cuomo in your place....

Wouldn't it be great if Gov. Patterson realized he was going onto the dem trashheap with Hillary and Joe Biden and decided to run as an independent? What a great race that would turn into with Urkel turning his back on a bling brother.

Oh well, if acorn is still around, they will take him

What a crock.

The Right Wing of the Republican Party loves injecting race into every issue so that they can look like victims - it is the game they play. Who else would compare Joe Wilson's outburst with Kanye West and Serena Williams? Who else would show a tape of a fight on a school bus and claim it to be racially motivated? Who else would ask whether a gang rape that never occurred in New York city was a hate crime? It's the right wing. These people obsess about race because they want to goad Obama into talking about it and then cry victim. They are always ready to find reverse racism so as to claim that real racism does not exist.

Seems to be a lot of hatred on both sides in these posts on here.
Obama always saw himself as a comedian.
Let him go on and do his job.

Dear Gillian,

I assure you, the outrage is not fake. And the machine is not producing slime, it is just uncovering it.

Does Obama EVER shut up?!

Last week the pundits were saying he didn't talk enough about his plans. Would you people ever make up your minds??? Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Which way do you want it this minute???

The lunatic-lefty wingnuts have taken over the Democratic Party and most Democrats are utterly clueless. The few media outlets documenting the FACTS scare the lunatic-lefty wingnuts. They want the clueless Democrats to remain ignorant because that is the only way they can control them.

Unfortunately for the lunatic-lefty wingnuts, information via the web and non-mainstream outlets is only going to continue to grow and the clueless will become more enlightened.

The people are already fighting back against this aggressive, over-reaching government. Better still, more Americans identify their political views as conservative than liberal. Sorry lunatic-lefty wingnuts, you're the minority and more moderates are waking up to the fact that the Democratic Party has been hijacked.

PS--Oh, and those 'young' liberals? More of them grow up and see the folly of liberalism. Yes, that's right, more people move from the left to right as they get older; not the other way around.

I'm tired of the Chicago Connection "Dog & Pony" show. There are too many diversionary tactics going on. i.e., Cap & Trade, relaxed mortgage lending practices, easy student loans, additional "stimulus" plans in the works, health care, cut back on Medicare (but not Medicaid), and Lord knows what else is in the plan. I think Obama and his Czars, White House Team and Congress are piling up all this stuff just to jam everything through as quickly as they can. And confuse the issues all into one - Larger government with more control.

Dear Free Thinker -- I see Obama as a comedian too.

LOL

11. Lipton and Tetley have refused to sponsor the Teabaggers -- now's his chance
12. He found out what Teabagging means and wants to explain it to America
13. Heard Couric will interview Glenn Beck
14. Wants to lecture Letterman on comedy
15. Will have Secret Service pick out groupies from Letterman's audience
16. Will read the Wikipedia entry for Max Baucus to the audience
17. Olympia Snowe will pop out of a cake
18. U Chicago Law faculty will pick him out of a lineup.
19, Wants to line up for Streisand at the Village Vanguard early
20. Wants to let Letterman and his writing team develop a gag for that red button that he has to carry around.

Not all conservative or Republican policies have race as their objective, but the Republican Party has clearly used its most prominent spokesmen to continue to use racism to energize its membership.

Yea, liberal posters all! All republicans and conservatives are racists. Great answer as a defense for the policies of your 'boy' (Jimmy Carter's word, not mine) in the Oval Office.
Hypocrites.....yes you ARE.

Good one Loch!

AND YOU JimBob Billy Jean Clampet, your post is discusting and racist to the core! I cant beleive you actually said : ''Kumbaya Gov. Patterson you blind idiot.'' ''throw a fellow black dem under the bus'' ''Urkel turning his back on a bling brother''.

Man you have some nerve accusing the left of fabricating racism when its coming out of your mouth like that?? I suggest sir that it is you that is blind not Mr Patterson!

So much of what we have seen in these Teabagger "protests" is clearly race based, but those who have the power to stop it refuse to admit it. It started well before the election with Limbaugh calling President Obama the "Magic Negro" and it has racheted up to a disheartening frenzy.

Racism, whether overt or subtle, is something I simply cannot abide by. It is hatred in its lowest form and it destroys the very fabric of our civility. It is almost like our society has regressed and that regression is being fueled by the Republican Party and those media people who speak for the Republican Party. Have they no consciences? Organized hatred and marginalization of any of our citizens should not be tolerated by any of us, including the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln.

Republicans need to be reminded that they were once the party of Lincoln....who is probably rolling over in his grave right now.

What an ugly legacy they have created for themselves. Hatred is very destructive and it usually consumes and destroys the hater first. Hopefully, that is what is happening to the Republican Party and it cannot happen soon enough.

Obama is funnier when he trys to be serious with comments like: I never even knew that ACORN (the group of community organizers that he worked for) recieved federal money. That's funny BO.

Obama is on T.V. more than the weatherman.

Here we have ANOTHER kiss from Mark Silva to his boss, Barack Obama. But, Mark, where is the Swamp item on the seven former CIA heads asking Obimbo to stop the investigation into the CIA? These past CIA heads go all the way back to the Carter disaster. Yet, NOTHING from Silva on this.
Or where is the Swamp item on Obimbo getting off track when George Stephanopolous (George Stephanopolous of all people!) asked him a few tough questions?
Where is the Swamp item on Obimbo apparently changing his tune on Afghanistan, from one of engagement to perhaps one of retreat?
But, it's the CIA issue that really gets me. Why, Mark Silva, are you so afraid of the truth?

Shineola.

I have no problem with a black man as my president.

I DO, however, have a big problem with THAT black man as my president.

Get it?

jimmuh carter is an idiot and to us Republicans he is the gift that keeps on giving.

Do you think the white folks who voted for Obama appreciate being called racist by this clown just because they disagree with what he is doing?

14 months until mid-terms

Obama only goes on those shows where he will be met by a sycophantic host and an adoring crowd and asked batting practice questions, and then pose for some photos which the host will treasure forever.

JD,
Once again, please, try to pay attention here. The Sunday morning post on Obama's TV interviews addressed all three of those issues. Stephanopoulos' questions, the ex-CIA directors and Afghanistan. This is too easy.

Disgusted, people dislike Obama's IDEAS. As we all witnessed, the country has moved past race and elected Obama.

The only people who talk about race are the DEMOCRATS. At every chance, the Democrats fall back to racism so they can divert attention from their Socialism.

If it was race, then people would ignore Carter and other whites. The common elements are their liberalism and Socialism.

Obama talked about "hope", but it turns out that what he means is that we are to hope that things don't get too bad for us while they ruin our Democratic Capitalism and replace it with their form of Socialism.

pathetic. thats all I have to say. letterman using his show for political bias. Dont watch him. I dont, never did. HE IS NOT FUNNY. never was, never will be.

There's nothing better for the political leanings of independents or "moderate" Democrats than the spectacle of Republicans who have gone off the deep end. The Orly Taitzes and Teabaggers of the nation are defining the Republican Party, which only helps Democrats with those who could actually go either way.

It's only the threat of violence from this faction that really worries me. Not that violence would help them politically--it would only marginalize them further. But it troubles me just because I don't want tragedy and I don't want to see even a segment of our nation sink that far.

Ironically, even most of the birthers and teabaggers would benefit personally from the policies they scream against. That's part of what makes it so clear that mere policy differences are not all that is at work here.

Golly, I remember the good 'ole days... when gas was over $4 a gallon. We started wars claiming "weapons of mass destruction" (are we still trying to find those WMD's?)... Smug Bush rarely spoke to the American people... and when he did he appeared defensive, hung over and rather perturbed that someone pulled him from his couch. Oh, and just a reminder... Bush took more vacation days prior to Sept 11 than any other president. Oh... yeah... and the banks began to fail in his 8th year as president and the world economy collapsed... oh sure, the GOP tries to blame it on Carter who was president 35 years ago... or Clinton who had been out of office for nearly a decade... Republicans - you lost the election - there is a reason for that - you did a terrible job for 8 years!! Stop pointing the finger at everyone else. You blew it!

No American should ever tire from hearing from an articulate, bright, poised and well-informed U.S. President. We were so use to hearing nothing and seeing nothing for 8 years, some of us can't appreciate hearing our Commander-in-Chief speak in complete and coherent sentences. Go ahead, Mr. President, I can't get enough of your voice; keep talking. I'm so proud you represent ALL of us.

I was thinking he might take the opportunity to inform us on how his bowling game has improved...maybe he'll speak to it during his next prime time appearance on Leno's new show. Remember the line when complimented on his 129 game...

"It's like the Special Olympics or something,"

With two 8 year old wars, trillions wasted, the bailouts and stimulus money unaccounted for, social security underfunded, medicare underfunded, post office losing money, Dept of energy worthless, Fannie Mae losing money, Freddie Mac losing money, And he wants to give us healthcare and take over another 20% of the economy and have it come out of our paychecks and employers pockets to fund illegal immigrant babymakers.
Better call your representatives if you have any judgement left and say no to this and Cap and trade his tax to beat all taxes which benefits a choice few on the backs of the working man.

I remember those good ole days too, Jill . . . when the outside world got too complex, we could trust our leaders to run away to Texas to clear brush from their ranches. . . .

Dumb and Dumber. Let's add Pelosi and Reid and they'll look and act like the Stooges and Marx Brothers. Easy to see why un-educated people are democrats - they just expect the conservatives to give them never-ending handouts by taxing them to death. Job creation won't happen anytime soon since small business owners want to work for themselves and their families, not to give their hard earned earnings to the government to "spread the wealth".

Hey democrats, here's a tip - take an economics class sometime and get a clue! (Or is that too racist for you to comprehend?)

The community organizer has to be one of the most pathetic president's this nation will ever have next to Jimmy Carter of course. He really needs to do his job instead of going on a talk show! Come on! He even stated it himself that he has bigger issues to address than ACORN robbing the taxpayers in this country.

"Golly, I remember the good 'ole days... when gas was over $4 a gallon. We started wars claiming "weapons of mass destruction" (are we still trying to find those WMD's?)... Amen! Coulf of hired any Monkey to run this country with the same end result: Bankrupt!

ULOST,

Your dingbat leader in the House who spoke of violence (Pelosi) was referring to San Francisco in the 70s when the mayor and supervisor were assassinated.

"I saw this, myself, in the late '70s in San Francisco," she said. "This kind of rhetoric was very frightening and it created a climate in which violence took place."

You see, she was counting on Democrats being too stupid (rightly) to know they were killed by a fellow Democrat who wanted his supervisor job back.

Oh, and Pelosi was counting on Democrats' amnesia (rightly) regarding the sheer vitriol they spewed for 8 yrs.

Oh, what will the Democrats next faux bogeyman be? Racist! Violence! Ha ha!

PS--Get a clue, NOBODY benefits from the unprecedented and destructive deficits Obama is saddling America with.

Republicants once again cry foul when they get caught looking stupid. In this case, the President SPECIFICALLY stated that he didn't think that race was an issue. Maybe it is not too late for Republicants on this forum to get a refund from their reading teachers.

When a Dixie Chick said that she did not support Bush 43, Republicant knuckledraggers picketed radio stations, concert venues and record stores. They protested with signs demanding that she leave if she wasn't supportive of the President. They ranted about unity in tough times and the need to put country first.

Hmmmmmmmm? It seems that selective memory is at work again within Republicant ranks. Keep whining and showing the world that you don't have a better plan to fix the things your hero did to the world. It'll make 2012 even easier for the Democratic party. I'd rather have a President who talks to the natiuon rather than one who lied to it.

Asked by Letterman in the taping of tonight's show today if his opponents are motivated by racial hatred, Obama said:

"It's important to realize that I was actually black before the election... This is true."

Actually BO you are half white. To bad that you define yourself by your skin color. I think that is really shallow and encourages racism. Why not own up to the truth and pull Grandma out from under the bus? Oh, yeah 'fraid of being called a "sell out." Um, so what is the "other half" supposed to think about all this? Since you are half white, can we white folk critize you? Or, are you gonna continue to pull the race card via Jimmy Carter?

Reading the arrogantly ignorant liberals, one has to wonder if they really are that clueless, or if lying is so normal to them that can no long tell if what they are saying has any bering on reality.

Liberals have done everything they can to prevent getting oil from resources within the United States, and then complain about gas prices.

Liberals don't mind genocide, as long as it does not appear in the Tribune or Times.

Liberals want illegal immigrants to get home loans at 0% down and then wonder why so many of them are defaulting on the loans.

Liberals believe you can negotiate with people who strap bombs to children with Downs Syndrome.

Liberals believe that government bureaucracy is more efficient than corporate bureaucracy.

Liberals think that they are smarter just because of their political views, and are totally clueless when real events smack them in the face.

I wish responses were a bit more thought through folks. That is precisely why we make no progress in this debate. Simply wishing the President to shut up is not going to make our economy better, is not going to win a war, and it is surely not going to provide healthcare for those who need it. I am less willing to position myself as blindly pro-Obama but it is the unintelligent response reflex of ideologues like you who have posted here and elsewhere, those who recur to simple emotional backlashes without truly studying the issue that I wish would simply shut up. I mean this to either side of the debate. Folks, simply think before you talk. Edit before you write. That might allow for some civility in the American debate over any of the pressing issues of our times.

One big love fest!. Give me a break.

It seems like there aren't enough libs here at the Lib-Trib to adequately support the "one."

For all you non-libs:
Isn't it funny that you're a racist for opposing this White House no matter what this guy does? It's also oh so very cute that the libs still blame everything on Bush. Did I miss something? I thought he left office eight months ago.

Our sides are splitting - not. Seems to me his mother was Caucasian and a part of him he NEVER acknowledges. This isn't very nice, or fair, or open minded. What he should have said was he was 'bi-racial' before the election; as he is not strictly 'Black'. According to the rabidly hypocritical liberals and democrats, only 'they' can demonstrate and protest against issues without censor or criticism. Sounds like 'just us'.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't President Obama also causian making his biracial? Has he completely disowned his mother's genetic pool?

Many posters who disagree with Pres. Obama have resorted to name-calling and slurs in these posts. For those of us who would be open to a reasoned discussion of the issue, it's hard to take your comments seriously when you stoop to this level. Please stop to consider the obstacle YOU create to finding a solution when you behave this way.

Tad embarassing that the President who says there are no new taxes in the legislation he's supporting, doesn't even know that the legislation itself calls them "excise taxes."

Goofing around with Letterman doesn't change the fact that he doesn't even know what's IN the legislation he wants passed.

Don't be distracted by silly stuff. Pay attention to the okey-doke and the bamboozle.

Mark, doesn't the former CIA directors letter to Obama merit its OWN item rather than get buried in an item on the Sunday programs? Sorry, but the FACT that SEVEN former CIA directors, dating all the way back to the Carter administration, telling the president this fishing expedition against the CIA is harmful to U.S. security is big news, too big to be buried.
Man, this is waaaay too easy!

And while "that one" is on Letterman yucking it up, our men and women are being killed in Afghanistan because he can't make a decision.

Hahahahahaha!

You were also unqualified before the election to be president too.

Geez, this Obama is in the press and talking to the public almost as often as Bush took vacations to his ranch.

I hope there was a chaperone on Letterman and Obama's date...

Boy is Chris Matthews going to be jealous

What has America got for a president a TV Clown or a Flip Flop President??

kathryn, please go back and read more closely. The namecalling (which I deplore also) goes both ways. "Republicants." "Glenn Beckkk." If I were moderating this forum, the first time I came across a called name ("Obimbo") in a post, it'd go straight in the electronic trashcan.

This place is full of alligators and poisonous snakes. That's why it's called the Swamp.

I see the Far Left Crazies and the Far Right Fringe are out in force on the posts. The Far Right calls President Obama all sorts of names and the Far Left Crazies call anyone that disagrees with Obama's programs hateful racists. There really seems to be NO difference between the Far Right and Far Left Posts. Both groups seem to be narrow minded hateful people with that rant and rave with little or no facts to back up their accusations. It is very unfortunate for the country that the Far Left in the Democratic Party and the Far Right in the Republican Party have so much influence. Maybe that is why the Congress is so split and nothing is getting accomplished.

People, Obama is half black and half white. He is not fully black given his mother is a white women! Where I come from he would be considered bi-racial. Wake up, if he lies about his race makes you wonder what else he is lying about???

20 years ago, he could be funny. Now he is just pathetic. Old and tired.

It is ashame that the message of Obama (in which he is leading by example!) to be civil and discuss issues thoughtfully without namecalling isn't coming across.

If you say you support Obama and his policies and idears (as I do) you should distance yourselves from the slender and not get sucked to that level of conversation.

K,

The next time we have a Republican President I'm going to start ripping that guy the minute he takes the oath office. I'm going to rip him every day, every chance I get, about everything from the clothes he wears (fascist uniform?) to the amount of food he eats during a typical day (stealing from the middle class and poor?) etc.
******************************
So you're saying that liberals like you didn't "rip" President Bush every chance you had? I'd hate to see what happens when you liberals really let loose.

elDee,

Geez, this Obama is in the press and talking to the public almost as often as Bush took vacations to his ranch.
********************************
And Obama has already outspent Bush in only nine short months. Maybe Obama should take a few more vacations and stop spending money like a drunken sailor.

He's BLACK!?!?

Carter was right. Many voted for Barry just because of his skin color, and that is racism.

It's a shame letterman is so incredibly pro obama, he's missing out on some great material. Lies, appointing communists, the 57 states comment, speaking Austrian, ACORN, lobbyists, earmarks,
tax cheats etc. etc. etc. (too much to list all of obama's lies)
This guy is still telling Bush jokes, yet the biggest joke out there is obama and his racist wife.
Maybe letterman and obama got together with barney frank aafterward and had some play time.
Didn't obama say he didn't have time to address ACORN,
other more pressing matters like ?....talk shows and the olympics?
I guess voter fraud doesn't worry the democrats much, yet!
Divided we fall, well, I guess we're in for quite a fall. Let's hope it doesn't get too messy.

To the people complaining about the racism thing, do you remember that it was a white guy who said it? Obama did not pull the race card. I also believe "This is true" was in reference to him saying he was black before the election. Which would then mean, that he was NOT saying that it was racism that inspired it. As for him not claiming his "white half," so what? He is, first and foremost, an American. Whether he is black, white or blue doesn't really affect his ability to do his job.

To people complaining about his proposed Health Care, I have a question for you, what should be done for the millions of people without health insurance? Most of those people don't have it because they can't afford it. And guess what? It's not going to get any better just leaving it as it is. We pay for it right now by losing a lot of doctors who refuse to work with specific insurance companies because of their policies. When was the last time you went to the emergency room and it cost less than $200 for two people including the medications out of your own pocket? That's all that my mother and I paid in Italy and we aren't Italian citizens. Seems to me, their system works. If you don't like his specific plan, what would you propose instead? Would you want to be the one to tell a 3 year old with a severe ear infection that their mommy can't take them to the doctor because she can't afford insurance let alone doctors' bills?

Hey Haters....live with it, Obama is your president, and he's smarter than you can ever imagine yourself to be. Go Obama!

Good job Mr. President. I'm proud to be an American.

What's horrible about all this is that having the first black president is going to destroy this country and it has nothing to do with his policies, just his skin. I don't agree with Obama's policies, but this racial bashing has to stop before there is no America left. Dem, Rep, white, black, latino, purple, green, or orange.. doesn't make a difference: look at the facts not skin or party.

Thank you Eddie - people do have selective memory and for those who think calling our President a 'monkey' and other unpleasant names is okay then I think YOU are a racist or you just have your head stuck in the sand and don't want to know the truth.
.

i think that david letterman should have a show with john mccain,to ask him some serious questions, first topic will be micheal jackson and ask him how did he get involved with mjackson, and all of a sudden hes (m.jackson)dead and now him and some other lawyer is in court fighting mjs mother for all mjs wealth!2nd topic would be do he know anything about mjs death?

Thank you for taking the times to speak with us Mr. President.

I think you're doing a pretty good job considering what you've been left with and with all of the obstacles in your way.

Keep up the good work. I know you're doing this for us.

All Republicans are racist. This includes Lincoln who freed the slaves and the 80% of Republicans who voted for the civil rights act of 1964.

Obama would never have been elected if it were not for reverse racism. Now some people are trying to build on that.

However, Obama does have the right to free speech. Obama said "Not going to make a decision about any further troop deployments." This is after redeploying troops from the countryside into the cities. Kind like of a reverse surge.

All Republicans are racist. This includes Lincoln who freed the slaves and the 80% of Republicans who voted for the civil rights act of 1964.

Give us all a break and shut up Willie! That is the most racist thing I have read yet. Why is it all of a sudden Dem's are not racist and all Rep's are? My point is made, this country will not survive the next 3 yrs if this kind of talk continues. We're going to end up fighting another civil war and people will be having to take sides and their heritage will determine their side, they won't have a choice because of people like Willie, in his mind it's cut and dry. What a shame...

Kate were you equally upset when Beck called Obama a racist? Is Beck causing a second civil war? Will you be fightiung on Beck's side or Obama's side?

I know what Beck said and not sure of the context of the conversation that brought that comment on but I haven't witnessed any direct racism from Obama, so on this matter I would be with Obama. I not bashing Obama or the democratic party here, if you read through these comments you will find people are saying a lot of hateful things. How far is this hate going to go, its everywhere these days? As Americans we should know the facts and base our decision on that, not race or gender.

Kate, I believe Willy Willmette was being sarcastic and trying to make a point in regard to his post about most Republicans being racist, including Lincoln and the Repubs who voted for the Civil Rights Act.

"Yeah Gary,
You're Repug Wall Street heroes did a great job of "creating jobs" during the Bu$hco reign of error.....NOT!"

Halbert, contrary to what you have been brainwashed into believing the far majority of "evil," "capitalist Pig," "Wall Street heroes," are DEMOCRATS. Wall Street is in NEW YORK CITY.
And yeah, tax cuts do create jobs. You might want to look up Clinton and Rahm Emmanuel and NAFTA in connection with outsourcing jobs to China and India. Remember Ross Perot? I voted for him. He was right.
