The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Never mind that Sunday morning run of the news talk shows that President Barack Obama will make this weekend.

Monday night, Obama's doing Letterman.

The president's planned appearance Monday night will mark the first by a sitting president on the Late Show and Obama's first since election.

This also will mark Obama's sixth appearance on Letterman's set -- he last appeared on Sept. 10 (see the photo above).

Back then, he was facing an election contest with Republican John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin and raising eyebrows with talk about lipstick on pigs.

"Have you ever actually put lipstick on a pig?" Letterman asked then.

"The answer would be no,'' Obama said. "But I think it might be fun to try."

He took a turn at explaining himself: "This is sort of silly season in politics - not that there's a non-silly season in politics,'' he said. "But, you know, it's a common expression in at least Illinois, I don't know about New York City. I don't know where you put lipstick on here... But in Illinois, the expression connotes the idea that if you have a bad idea, in this case I was talking about John McCain's economic plans, that just calling them change, calling it something different, doesn't make it better, hence, lipstick on a pig is still a pig."

The president probably will be attempting to generate a similar, generally good feeling about himself as he presses Congress for health-care reform -- the purpose of his Sunday news show stints -- when he sits down with Letterman again, sans lipstick.

Unlike that loser McCain, I'm sure Obama will at least show up.

They have something in common..., neither one is funny.

PATHETIC!
Pathetic President presenting a pathetic program on a pathetic program!

Say that 10 times fast!

Just because you can get yourself on any television show you want doesn't mean you should. 60 Minutes on Sunday, Letterman tonight, Hell's Kitchen on Thursday....

This much air time smells of desperation. Mr Obama: do what the middle of the population wants and you won't have to spend so much time begging - this is not dignified or effective.

It is now being announced that Obama is going to be on ABC (This Week), NBC (Meet the Press) and CBS (Face the Nation) on Sunday pushing his Health Care Program.. I hope the Main Stream Media will get away from their Hero Worship and ask the President how we are going to pay for this massive Health Care reform if it is enacted. As more Americans lose their jobs and homes Obama and his Chicago Gang are thinking up new ways of running up the National Debt. I thought the spending in the Bush years was bad but Obama is making Bush the Younger look like a fiscal conservative. Help, the United States is drowning. Maybe the Chinese will buy up more of our debt and country.

The Campaigning President reaches out to the Hollywood - Talk Show set. Reality is not necessary to reach his political base.

It's time to lead not campaign to the fantasy world for acceptance and pushing an agenda.

Ours has become a society that demands entertainment - today's "reality entertainment" phoney as it is, is none the less demanded. Is our presidnet going to be the next reality star?

Will Gerry Springer be next on the list? Dr. Phil? Judge Judy?

There's still a heavy fog of anger due to the lies, confusion, and fear spread by the ill-informed and their media darlings on faux and talk radio.
Insurance and health sector pr departments share the blame as well as the legislators they've funded. BO can't yell louder than these people but he can press his message at every opportunity. That's what he's doing on Letterman. That's the kind of exposure he and his message requires and I hope he continues until the fog lifts. Hopefully soon.

Of course he'll show up. This is all part of his great PR drive for the takeover of health. That's what it really is, too. They want to dictate how healthy and how long and how much we can spend to stay healthy. It's just a PR campaign. This guy is unbelievable. He's on TV more than Letterman. Maybe that's what HIS job really is.

Nobody watches Letterman anymore anyway. I am so sick of looking at Obama on TV ."No sitting president has ever appeared on late night talk shows?" That's because most of our previous presidents had class. How desperate does Obama have to be?

The Obamabot sycophants like Letterboy will play nice and not ask the hard questions about how you add the millions of people with health care (Barry keeps changing the number) without more doctors, nurses, staff etc. and why it is bold faced lie that it won't add to the deficit.

Oh, good! Maybe he can tell the small amount of viewers about his affiliation with ACORN. You are so busted, zero.

side note: Look at that PHONY "hollywood" smile in the picture.

Good Allah, help us all.

Style and no substance.
Talk about a desperate move to try and jam a proposal that isn't worth crap down our throats.

Hey Den, if there aren't enough doctors to take care of everyone, why don't YOU volunteer never to see a doctor again? is your life more valuable than the single mom working full time at WalMart who can't afford health insurance and who's job doesn't provide it?

This is absurdity at it's best. Obama, the celebrity is making the Hollywood rounds on taxpayer money. Why do people play into this guy? It's all sales & marketing Folks ... Dog and Pony shows. I'm sick and tired of this guy wasting my hard earned money, that I have to pay to the government, running around the country and world.

If what he was 'selling' was any good, he wouldn't have to whore it around to talk shows. He could just 'sell' it to the American people directly. He tried that, and it didn't work. How about just listening to the American people instead of doing this dog and pony show?

I'm glad that we finally have a President (Obama) who is not afraid to go out in public....unlike Shrub Jr, who only spoke to pre-screened audiences, and The Dick Cheney who hid in his bunker for eight years.

The part that makes this so great and burns the Wingnuts butts to the core is this - LETTERMAN IS NOW THE NUMBER ONE LATE NIGHT COMEDY SHOW ON TV!

Posted by: Terry | September 15, 2009 4:11 PM

It's really sad Terry, but Obama has to be out there countering the shameless outright lies that spew from the mouths of people like you. He has to explain just how dishonest people like you are being about what he is proposing. He has to fight against the slimy low lifes who will say anything, no matter how untrue, in order to ensure that millions of americans are kept from having access to quality healthcare. Obama's appearance reflects more on the dishonest, dishonorable right wingers like you, than it on him.

Is anything more degrading than being on the same stage with David Letterman?

Clown,
I didn't hear any of you Wingnutters asking questions when Bu$hco doubled our national debt in only eight years (a record), started two wars (one of them, Iraq, based on lies) costing us multi billions in blood and treasure and then they followed that up by giving tax cuts to the richest 1%, big corporations and big oil - no, you were clapping like a trained seal when they did that.

Yes, there is!

NOT being on stage with Letterman.....why don't you ask McCain how that worked out for him?

I got 2 words for the Party of No suggestions of a Hollywood-fueled "dog & pony show": MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Still in campaign mode, I see. Has Obama set foot in the Ovan Office yet?

* should be "Oval Office"

Since she's got nothing better to do - I wonder if Palin will show up and protest? :)

OK, this is starting to get a little pathetic! If Obama has to rely on David Letterman to plug his health care plan, it's time to hang it up. Riding on someone else's coattails to promote your agenda is the surest way to tank your own approval rating.

This guy NObama is one terrific snake oil salesman. He would have been very successful in the 18th century,

Our President is overexposed. So much so that I can see him fitting in as one of the ladies on The View rather than as the man in the Oval Office. How do you know he is overexposed? When people begin to reminisce how at least when President Bush came out of his hole in the wall to defend a pie in the sky war, pie in the sky interrogation tactics, or used pie in the sky language....he came off as The President of the United States. Maybe it's time for our Cheshire Cat or rather the only thing that has come to represent the White House...a big white grin... to try to look more serious... and maybe make less rounds on TV... and maybe just maybe he'd be taken more seriously than a high ranking celebrity.

Are these blogs not copy-edited? Obama "last appeared on Sept. 10th." What year? Given the posting on Sept. 15th, one might reasonably assume the writer meant Sept. 10th, 2009. Standards, please.

"This much air time smells of desperation. Posted by: zermatt "

can you please elaborate? how is it wrong for a President to try and convince Americans of something he truely believes in. Oh wait, are you one of those people who thinks he is following a plan to purposefully F&#* up american lives? Right. Okay.

Narcissistic bimbo. Oooops, is that racist to call him that???

Chris et al.,

No, no, no.....

Campaign is just beginning.

The 2010 campaign.

Dems in Congress would do well to watch President's speechs and appearances this week.

And remind themselves that he can make a speech like that for them in their district....

Or not.

The decision is in their hands......

If the teabagging right wing nuts don't like it, don't watch. Tune in to Glenn Beck or Rush Windbag for more mindless drivel bought and paid for by the special interest insurance corporations. Fools!

This time, let Letterman make the jokes.

And don't mention Olympics, special or otherwise.

Please go on vacation Mr. President. Stop talking, I'm begging you. Give the telemprompter a rest.

I continue to be in awe of the venomous, bitter hatred President Obama raises in some people. Is a confident, educated, black liberal with political skills that scary? Is it so difficult to distinguish liberalism from statism? Calm down, think past slogans, listen, talk without profanity or insults, hold up your end of the social compact. Or help America go to hell faster.

Next thing you know, Obama will be on Dancing With The Stars.

Letterman is a BORE. The only people who find this stale man funny are liberals. His audience is like trained seals; there's more hootin' an' hollerin' than laughter. It's like a freaking pep rally!

How can Obama say illegals won't get insurance when they can easily fet wellfare? Anyone??

If he'd go on Jay Leno I might watch Letterman's show is on too late for a farm girl from IN who doesn't even like Obama but I might be willing to watch for entertainment purposes.

...That's because most of our previous presidents had class. How desperate does Obama have to be?

Posted by: JoAnne | September 15, 2009 4:26 PM

No JoAnne most of our previous presidents were without the (cl)Ass(es)

How could he appear on such a raunchy show? This man has no ethics or morals and for the president of the United States to appear on his show is disgusting.

No why we do not respect Obama?

GUESS?

He does not respect us or our feelings or beliefs.

did you ever put lip stick on a pig no replyed hussein obama but it might be fun! the two butheads interview face to face get togeather. i can just see letterman introducing obama bent over and looking back at crowd with lip stick on his face? talk about publicity promotion? think letterhead will ask about hussein obama van jones appointment to czar and anti - israel comments? hussein obama anti- israel settlements views too? yes hollywood and jewish tv propaganda all the way to the white house live on letterman show!!! remember the one of obama standing on corner with gun in one hand and knife in other" ask about this his reply was i don't know wheather to cut across the street or shoot up the alley! yes the letterman the guy who reminds people of somebody they hate!!! michigan little big horn INDEPENDENT AMEN.

No, just typically stupid.

President Obama... you are doing a GREAT job!! Thank you. Seems like a lot of folks are pissed that you are defending yourself... It's hard to have a debate when there is so much fear and ignorance.
