President Obama is dispatching an advance team to Copenhagen to pave the way for a possible personal appearance before the Olympic committee next month.
The decision doesn't necessarily mean Obama will be able to make an in-person appeal for his adopted hometown of Chicago, which is bidding to to host the Olympics in 2016, a senior advisor to the president said this afternoon.
But the president wants to make sure he has the option to go, in case he can get away from the health care discussions to make the trip.
Before any presidential trip, the White House advance teams need time to size up the security situation and make arrangements for accomodations -- even for travel the president doesn't end up undertaking. The advance team will travel Monday.
"He wants to preserve his options," the advisor said in an interview today.
Ten days ago, Obama told Chicago Mayor Richard Daley that he might not be able to get away, because of the ongoing effort to pass a health care bill. But Obama still hopes to make the trip if he can do so without jeopardizing the reform bill, aides say.
Whatever happens, First Lady Michelle Obama will still go and make the case for her hometown to host the games.
The White House considers her a persuasive salesperson.
"She is regarded as an essential strength of the strategy, because she was born and raised in Chicago and her life story embodies the Olympic spirit," the Obama advisor said.
Chicago is competing with Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro to host the Olympics. The 100-plus member International Olympic Committee will vote on a winner early next month.

Comments
Mr Obama should not get involved with the Lord Daley, Daley is nothing but corruption, Mr Obama is clean of corruption and should keep away from the Lord of corruption.

So the President wants to "preserve his options" for an Olympic trip. That means, of course, that he's going.
Posted by: Anthony C | September 19, 2009 4:29 PM
Mayor Daley has the nerve to ask Obama to take an overseas trip for his selfish interests. Obama has a full plate, doesn't this Mayor understand it. Anyway, Chicago cannot afford the Olympics. Mr Daley get your priorities straight and leave our President out of your local issues.

Hopefully he can make it. It would certainly increase Chicago's chances significantly.
Posted by: Kyle | September 19, 2009 4:43 PM
This is not about Lord Daley but about Chicago and the rest of the United States so Mr. Obama should go and represent his hometown as well as his country.
GO CHICAGO!!!

Seriously?!?
The country being what it is does Obama really have nothing better to do then to pitch the Olympics in Chicago to the world?

Hereth begins the wasteful taxpayers spending...an advance team for a non-trip. GO RIO. Please.

Anybody else think that this is all just a PR stunt to make Obama's eventual visit to Copenhagen more newsworthy? Like he had been planning to go all along, but wants to be that guy that everyone was bummed because he wasn't showing up to the party, but then shows up and makes everyone's night?

I have my fingers crossed that President Obama goes to Copenhagen. We need his support in our qest to land the 2016 summer games. i know that many people have their doubts, but it would help bring visibility to the city and much needed federal funds.

oh puke - I'm sure obama will show up like the savior - I say NO OLYMPICS - The Reader says the Olympics will hurt, not help tourism in Chicago - http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-olympic-myth/Content?oid=1196342

Obama is clean of corruption? Wow! And ACORN was helped by Mother Theresa. And Tony Resko was just a guy in the neighborhood, right? It's amazing what tunnel vision and selective thinking can do to one's mind. As we all know, it was Bush 41 that corrupted Lord Daley's father and from that point on, it's just linear history easily found in the main stream media online files.

Clean of corruption like Rezko and la dee dah... An Honest Politico is an oxymoron I heard say. Oh well we can Hope...despite all the broken promises that were empty...

Why pass up a free trip to Copenhagen? What a great way to see a beautiful city. That and a chance to get out of DC would ice it for me. And the 2016 thing? Sounds like Daley thinks its in the bag already. Maybe the President doesn't wish to get too close to the Mayor if the nod goes to Rio in which case someone may spontaneously combust!

I believe Chicago locked in the 2016 Olympics on the day of Obama's election last November. The opportunity for behind the scenes bargaining by Obama surrogates with federal money at their disposal is huge. Not a direct payment, but increased U.S aid for this program, new foreign aid for another program. One country gets a U.S.contract for supporting the U.S. bid. The opportunities for an unspoken but understood quid pro quo payment for supporting Chicago’s Olympic bid are almost endless. Obama's Chicago connection and easy access to and opportunity to direct federal money make the Olympics in Chicago a lock. The other countries didn't stand a chance

Too late. Obama is already in deep to Daley and his aldermen. Follow the G-man money. Check the projects that have been started.

If Chicago gets the games it will turn out exactly like anything else connected to the city: the few enriched at the expense of the many. The taxpayers will be fleeced again. If this is so good why isn't your taxes going down. Instead they go up and up and up. Billions of your tax dollars funneled into the hands of criminals by the criminals in office.

Is Daley footing Obama trip?
Posted by: Dave | September 19, 2009 7:26 PM
If the advance team is going, so is Obama. He just needs to look like he is not going because is looks so crooked, which it is.
Top advisor, Jarret: Daley's chief of Staff. Wife, Michele, worked for Jarrett. Jarrett had clout. HELLO!!!!!!

Ya"ll gots to remember who put Obama in office. Just as the oleman put JFK in office. All Dictator Daley is doing is calling in another favor.

I agree with previous posts. Obama will make a last minute "surprise" appearance in Copenhagen. It's all about him, anyway.
Posted by: mbmom | September 19, 2009 8:43 PM
Anyone who thought he wasn't going - from the very beginning - was only fooling themselves. Do you honestly think our egomaniacal president would miss a photo op with Japan's and Spain's royals?! He'll be there -- in his blue leotard, red Speed-O and billowing cape while Daley gets all bumbly and sweats a lot ... and Oprah swoons.
Like Obama himself, this is all such a joke.

"First Lady Michelle Obama will still go and make the case for her hometown to host the games."
I can't help but wonder: Is this the first time in her adult life that Michelle Obama is proud to be a Chicagoan?

This is just a chance for another vacation for Obama and Michelle. I'll bet they take the kids too -- along with his and her contingent of take-alongs.

Obama will go because the Olympics are Socialist and Anti American. Look at all those European countries that have hosted the Olympics. They all are Communist, with their universal health care and death panels. Tea baggers unite!!
Posted by: Sonny | September 20, 2009 12:30 AM
Obama the Unqualified not corrupt? Oh come on. How ignorant are you Sotag? Geez.
As for King Daley forcing Obama into going? Yeh right. Of course, Daley is trying to get him to go, Daley knows that if Obama doesn't the chances of Chicago getting the Olympics goes down the tubes - even the Committee stated that if does not go, it will be "noted".
Just hope the Committee tells Chicago - forget it. The Olympics is going elsewhere!
Posted by: Darkwater | September 20, 2009 1:45 AM
of course he does...Val jarrett and Michele obama (corrupt) stand to make multi millions on the Olympics. This is the biggest money making grab for Daley connected dems in many generations. CORRUPTION....that will bring Barry Soreto to Copenhagen.
Posted by: jolietjay | September 20, 2009 1:47 AM
The President should not go. The trip itself has a small amount of risk and it is not for any Presidential business. Yes the risk of the President's plane going down on this flight is small but why should he take the chance? Fro those of you who are so eager to see the President go to Copenhagen, how would how would feel if he was injured or worse on this useless trip? I say Obama should stay home and tend to business.

Mayor Mumbles city has more murders than any other in the United States, yet he puts a priority on playing Games.
Cant wait until the National Press finally figures out this ACORN loving President and his corrupt Crony Mayor Mumbles are two peas in a pod.
He's One and Done...enjoy your remaining 3 1/2 years.

He's been "working" on health care since last year and, yet, he hasn't offered a plan yet. Gee, I hope he can get away. Would hate to slow down the progress, I mean, He certainly doesn't take enough vacations and he's got so many tv appearances lined up. I'm sure everything on capitol hill would just fall apart if he went skiing. Maybe the 2016 Olympics will pay for universal health care...and the 2013 health care plan will pay for the 2016 olympics...keep your eye on the ball...he's a master of the slight of hand...47 million uninsured...only 30 million uninsured...illegal immigrants not covered...legalize all illegal immigrants...we're back to 47 million without coverage. He lied. Oh no, that guy just said he lied. What a racist. Calling him a liar. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/09/18/does_he_lie_98363.htmlCorrupt? Chicago? Acorn? Whoa. He's handsome.

The US has had two Summer games in Los Angels, one in Atlanta, a Winter game in Lake Placid and in Salt Lake City. I say let Brazil have one. Besides, this will be nothing but union and political corruption and we tax payers will be left to clean up the mess for many years. Their plans are idiotic.. Bike races would be in Madison, Equestrian events in Lake County. How will all these people get around? I have friends in Salt Lake City who said the preparation for the games made their lives a living Hell for several years and only a select few made money.

It's a rare lose-lose for Obama.
If he goes to bat for Chicago and they decide it's South America's turn for the Olympics, right wingers will use that against him.
If he goes over and Chicago does get Olympics, right wingers will just cite this as another example of their thesis that Obama is "corrupt Chicago politician carrying water for Machine".
Plus on top of the additional problem:
Chicago can't really afford Olympics.
It would be another signpost on road to bankruptcy.
Another "Soldier Field" type bond issue Chicago can't really pay for.
Chicago can't even pay salaries of city workers now.

Obama wants, Obama wants, Obama wants...he sounds like a broken record In my 59 years on this rock, I have never, ever, in my life, witnessed a President so in love with his own voice. Nary a day goes by this dude is not pontificating and giving another 'speech' somewhere. Take a day off, dude. Stop talking.
Posted by: Banderman | September 20, 2009 9:25 AM
Here is another question? does the United States deserve the 2016 since we caused the current world wide economic meltdown? There are investors in Asia and in Europe who have lost their life savings because of excesses in the US. Many Chicagoans are debating the issue of whether the Games will be good or bad for Chicago. No one is asking the question of whether we actually deserve them.
Posted by: ejhickey | September 20, 2009 10:21 AM
Of course the anti-Obama posters are out in force. Anything this guy does will never please these people. The Bejing summer olympics actually made money. $175m in the black. I know that is not much compared to the investment but the other benefits are not included in that figure. Go Chicago
Posted by: NoTbaggers | September 20, 2009 11:26 AM
I think it is so, so funny that people complain that the president of the USA talks in public too much. Come on... he is the most public public figure on earth and his job is to address issues publicly. I know you guys hate him and are all worked up about complaining about every thing he does, I get that. I felt the same about Bush, though it was hard to complain about him speaking too much, with all of his vacation and all. However, please stick to the issues. Maybe you are tired of hearing our president speak on this issues, I know this must be jarring after 8 years the least amount of public discourse in US history.
Carry on with your "not racist" comments that are not driven by your fear or ignorance.

President Obama WILL go to Copenhagen, his BOSS has ordered him to go. But shhhhhh, it's gonna be a surprise.
Posted by: gobears | September 20, 2009 1:41 PM
Judging from some of the repeated rhetoric, patterns of speech and bad grammar, I'd say there's one person posting repeatedly in the comments section. Dude, at least mix it up a bit!
It's funny that we hear nearly all negative comments; when they actually ask Chicagoans about the Olympics, a majority is in favor of having the Games here.
Posted by: al m | September 20, 2009 2:29 PM
As a Brazilian I fear that Rio may get this game. First because we are a poor country and should spend money in things that are really important for the development of our country: education, health system, etc. Second, because there will be corruption as much as it happened during the Pan Am games. Finally, because more and more studies show that the economic impact of such an event is insignificant, actually Beijing lost unprecedented money with the games, with tourism decreasing during and after the games (also because of the current crisis, but still...).
Tokyo should get this games, is the best proposal, but this is not the sport soul where: wins the best
Posted by: Sontag | September 20, 2009 2:51 PM
Sotag- Obama IS a product of the Chicago political machine without a doubt. He is already Daley's pawn. "Free of Corruption" is a naive statement my friend. Wake up and smell the coffee!
Posted by: Jim Colella | September 20, 2009 3:11 PM
I hope the President doesn't go. Chicago can't afford the Olympics. I don't know why Obama feels he owes Daley. Daley is the kind of creep Obama should be putting a lot of distance in between. Chicago has awful schools, terrible public trans, and an appalling lack of affordable housing! The olympics are not going to solve these problems, and will more likely, exacerbate them. If he goes, it will ultimately make him look bad when the Daley style corruption starts. And it will start!
Posted by: ken | September 20, 2009 3:34 PM
I'm so glad that we spend millions of dollars sending staffers around the world to plan trips that Obama might take. What a waste of money. Stay home, take care of business here, and let your wife do what First Lady's do. You got my vote the first time, not again, Obama.

It would be too dangerous to host the games in the USA.
Terrorist could find a way here.
Lord Daley destroyed Meigs field why?
Does his pea brain think what would happen here by letting others from other countries here, it is too dangerous.
