President Obama said today he wants to give upcoming talks with Iran a chance to resolve international conflict over that country's rogue nuclear program.
But in the wake of today's public disclosures about an underderground nuclear facility in Iran, the president also said he isn't taking military options off the table if diplomacy doesn't work.
The president said Iran should take seriously what seems to be a growing resolve among world leaders to contain its nuclear capability. The leaders of France and Britain joined Obama for a morning announcement about the underground Iranian nuclear plant, and China and Russia also joined in an international call for an investigation.
"That kind of solidarity is not typical," Obama said. "Anybody who has been following the responses to Iran would have been doubtful just a few months ago that that kind of rapid response was possible. So I think Iran is on notice that, when we meet . . . they are going to have to come clean and make a choice."
The president made the remarks during a press conference in Pittsburgh this afternoon, where a meeting of the heads of state from the G20 nations is winding down.
The half-hour news conference came at the end of a week in which Obama also met with world leaders at the United Nations headquarters in New York; almost every meeting of the week bore some relationship to the president's growing concern about nuclear weapons in Iran.
Questions from reporters focused almost entirely on new diclosures about a nuclear plant in Iran. The leaders of the US, France and Britain announced this morning that their intelligence officials have separately tracked development of the plant - which they say is on a scale consistent with the development of nuclear weapons.
Obama was careful to point out that the three countries' intelligence agencies did their investigations independently, so that there would be no ambiguity about their findings.
The evidence is solid, the president said, that Iran is constructing an enrichment facility it had not declared, in violation of U.N. resolutions and IAEA protocols.
He said he wanted to keep the lines of communications open with Iran in part to "strengthen world unity around our collective efforts to hold Iran accountable."
But he said he also wanted to keep open the possibility of talks so that Iran can make "the right choice" not to isolate itself from the international community.
"Our preferred method of action is diplomatic," he said. "If that does not work, then other consequences may follow."

Basically that means nothing will be done and he'll make some lame excuse and the left will make it sound like Iran deserves nukes because of something we did.

"I understand those who protest that some countries have weapons that others do not. No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons."

Obama is getting run out of Afghanistan, and he expects Iran to actually think military action is on the table? This guy has reached "most incompetent U.S. President" in record time.

Gee, talking to people we don't like instead of just making up reasons (WMD's) to bomb them? What a great idea!

Obumbles, countries have come together before when challenged by another. Anyway, hasn't there been lots of talking already? Hasn't the U.S. tried to get UN sanctions and action on Iran for years now? Hasn't Ahmadinijan basically said screw you to the UN and the rest of the world? That they are going to do whatever they want regardless?
Fine, make another effort and talks and some diplomacy. Right now it is the thing to do. BUT, realize that it really won't accomplish much of anything and that whether we want to or not, some type of military action will be necessary. But when Obama just quietly sat by while Iranian authorites massacred thousands of Iranians after the elections, I don't think the Iranian regime is too scared of this weakling.

JD, perhaps you're unaware of the history between Iran and the U.S., but most of the antagonism has come from us. We deposed a democratically Prime Minister whose policies weren't favorable to a British oil company. Muslims, if you hadn't noticed, have long memories despite the young blood they shed. If you're a Christian, you might know the phrase "for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Well, get out your tools.

Thank god the American people got smart in 2008 and kicked the warmongering Neocon Repuglicans to the curb in the last election. We would probably have already invaded Iran by now if those nuts were still in charge.
"The neocons are rising, zombie-like, from the grave American voters dug for them in the last election. Untroubled by regret, much less shame, they're already whetting their knives for the Obama administration, exploiting challenging events abroad -- whether in Iran or Honduras -- to rewrite their own history, on the one hand, and start to write Barack Obama's, on the other."

Exactly what George W. Bush would have said under the same circumstances.
Except that opponents would take it seriously when Bush talked about force. With Obama.....

The last thing America can afford militarily or financially is to involve itself in yet another un-winnable war.
1. Korea (Draw)
2. Vietnam
3. 'Secret' war in Laos and Cambodia
4. Iraq II
5. Afg.
6. 'Secret' war in Pak
To support any kind of actual war against Iran I would need to see very convincing evidence. We need more than somebody holding up 'prop' anthrax at the UN, or pictures of weather balloon trucks.
We are nearly 8 years down the losing road in Afg and there is no end in sight in Iraq. It has dropped to a simmer, but the lid will blow off as soon as we leave regardless, so why not leave now?

Nothing is going to be done.
It's funny though that people speak of how tough Bush was, as he didn't do a thing about Iran. He was the one who allowed it to arrive to this state, where now Obama does nothing.
A very interesting, though debatable, suggestion of what can still be done to stop Iran I read here: http://www.pandalous.com/topic/a_nuclear_iran

This is nothing new from Nobama!.
He is so naive it isn't even funny.
He thinks that if you talks real nice
to them, that they will embrace him and give him a big wet one. Frankly, speaking the office of the Presidency requires more than a community organizer can provide. Resign now and preserve your dignity.

Speaking of teh G20, let's see how the left protest:
Since Silva hasn't reported on the G-20 yet, let's look at what a protest by the left looks like. 19 arrests - doesn't sound like a tea bag party. Don't forget to look at 30 pictures.

The wingnuts are at it again! To the moron calling the President "Ojumbles"- tell me, how many attacks did mr. Bush launch on Iran in the 8 years he was President, despite accusing them of having a nuclear program? To the morons blaming liberals- how many attacks were launched by the GOP in the 6 years they controlled things?

It's deja vu all over again. Let Russia or China bomb them this time. Actually, start by bombing the ones who gave them the tech and the uranium (gee, hope it's not us).

Not only does Krauthammer skewer Obama and his feckless "non-binding" resolution:
http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZDVmMWIyZjYyZjAyY2M2OTVhOWI3YzhmM2I4YmRiYTA=
But all opinion aside, even the French are mocking him. Here is Sarkozy, “I support the extended hand of the Americans, but what good has proposals for dialogue brought the international community? More uranium enrichment and declarations by the leaders of Iran to wipe a UN member state off the map,” he continued, referring to Israel."
Let's hear it for the Canadian National Post, providing the news our own bootlickers in the media can't or won't.

Mark, are you happy with the intellectual level of your Obama supporters? More important, are you going to keep your pledge to crack down on rudeness in this blog--even if keeping that pledge means deleting most posts by Obama supporters?

Why don't we just let Europe take care of this? We have enough on our plate as it is. Iran is not a threat to us or it's neighbors. And, if we play it smart, we can garner the support of the people of Iran who are starting to demonstrate some resolve. The simple prospect of bombing or invading Iran is just not plausible. Anyone suggesting that should be discounted in the discussion.

Obama needs to resign now. Obviously he cannot continue to destroy this country economically and also protect it from the nutbags who were given a pulpit at the incompetent beauracracy known as the UN this week.

Since our governments general stance has been to bash butts then asked questions, don't you think it might be a good idea to give some conversation a chance instead of continually repeating the same mistake? When you find yourself at the bottom of a hole, it's time to quit digging.

Obama, along with our "friends", the cowardly Brithish, won't do anything. Get use to a nuclear Iran. Then, get comfortable with paying a lot more for gas. Wait until nuclear Iran decides to close the Straight of Hormuz, then watch oil go up to $200 a barrel, if we're lucky.

Words are cheap. Everyone knows Obama (who I voted for) does not have the backbone to be tough with any terrorist states. Nice speeches, but the tail is wagging the dog. I am disappointed.

Bruce, you also forgot about PrePukes (what a nice name and thought, that is, huh?) and Teabaggers.
Course, folks will say I'm the last to call out name calling. Yep, calling the Far Left, loons, is so mean and nasty!
Bruce, Mark Silva will let his deranged hooligans do and say whatever they want here. But be a little critical and use facts while doing it, that calls out for some censorship by the Swampites!
Anyway, in regard to Bush and Iran, it seems to me that for years Bush called for action against Iran and was met with nothing, first by the Russians and Chinese, then the Europeans, and finally by the media and Left in this country.
And I do remember, even recently, when there were Swamo items about a Cheney interview in which he said he favored military action against Iran, the hypocritical Loons on the Left chastised him. But now that Obama is in charge, all of a sudden, the military option deserves some consideration??? AS one pointed out, I don't think the Iranians are scared about Obama using that option. He is too timid and weak to do anything.

Serious question; Does anyone know if the road to the airport was ever cleared and declared safe for general passage?

Detainees out of GItmo by January 22, 2010 - probably not.
Troops out of Iraq by May 20, 2010 - probably not.
