by Mark Silva
President Barack Obama, who stood before a joint session of Congress and the American television-viewing public this week to pitch his plan for an overhaul of health care in America, says this now about the bill he is asking Congress to pass:
"I own it.''
Obama acknowledges ownership of a bill on which the success of his own term may now be riding in an interview that will air Sunday on CBS News' 60 Minutes. Obama sat for the interview with CBS' Steve Kroft on Friday, two days after delivering his address to Congress.
Not only must Congress now act on a bill, says Obama -- who declared this "the season for action'' in his nationally televised address -- but it also must pass one that works. That means, by his rules, providing insurance for those who lack it and improving insurance for those who have it, without compounding the federal deficit.
"I have no interest in having a bill get passed that fails,'' Obama says in the 60 Minutes interview. "That doesn't work.
"You know, I intend to be president for a while and once this bill passes, I own it,'' the president says, according to an excerpt released by CBS today.
"And if people look and say, 'You know what? This hasn't reduced my costs. My premiums are still going up 25 percent, insurance companies are still jerking me around,' I'm the one who's going to be held responsible,'' Obama says.
"So I have every incentive to get this right."

Comments
I'd sat Obama has a good chance of getting some ObamasCare bill passed.
Not because the bill is any good. Or because the people demand it. But because his media buddies will continue to make sure his voice will be heard ten times more than the opposing voices. Hard to lose a debate when the media makes sure only one side is heard.
To give but one example, the Swamp STILL hasn't written about, posted, or linked to the GOP response to Obama's Speech to Congress. Since the Swamp won't provide equal (or even unequal) time ..... Congressman's Boustany's address can be viewed at http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/09/boustany.health.care/index.html#cnnSTCVideo

'I own it'? Spoken like a true narcissist, despot, or otherwise inflexible person in power; most likely absolute power. Obama, news flash: you are a public servant. Nothing more, nothing less. The will and desire of 'We the people' must be considered. The United States Constitution precludes such absolute power and dogmatic declarations, if we are to take your comments literally. "I intend to be President for a while..."? Only if you are re-elected, Bub, only if you are re-elected. Your intent has nothing to do with our system of democracy.

To Banderman. You missed the whole point. He is doing what most politicians don't. He is taking responsibility. He is saying since, he is taking responsibility for this bill, he will make sure it will help the public. Happy constituents will get him re-elected.
Posted by: martiniduck | September 12, 2009 11:32 AM
Interesting bruce...I'm sure we haven't heard both sides of the debate. Never heard of death panels. Not at all.
And banderman, who else will get blamed if this bill turns out to be less than spectacular? Those who oppose it sure won't. Mr. Obama is simply stating the obvious (although it seems some folk have a little trouble seeing the obvious): if he's going to be president beyond 2012 this bill had better get done and done right. Duh!
Posted by: misterchi | September 12, 2009 11:41 AM
It's clear to me by "I own it", he meant, "I'm responsible for it", which is why he wants to get it right. I do not think he meant he "owns" it in a materialistic way.

The opposition has so much airtime that it's ridiculous. They have no argument or alternative plan. They have a campaign of fear and lies and misinformation. If you subscribe to the Republican opposition then you are an idiot. Period. If Obama is so wrong then whey aren't there clear arguments and normal leaders coming out against it? All you people have are nuts with lies.

Hey Swamp, I would say this counts as an "over the top personal attack" posted by Banderman
Posted by: Whatever | September 12, 2009 11:47 AM
Banderman--
You couldn't have missed the mark by more. What is it about extremists (regardless of political affiliation) that causes them to completely misread the things said by their ideological counterparts? I mean, do you TRY to be obtuse and deliberately misinterpret what Obama is saying?
Clearly, he was trying to claim responsibility for the repercussions of the bill. He was trying to say, "I'm the one pushing this bill along, so I will be held responsible for the outcome." It has nothing to do with narcism and everything to do with accepting responsibility for your actions.
If you see something more sinister, your viewpoint is seriously warped and you should be ignored. Feel free to bleat your insane views to the sky, but don't be surprised if they are widely ignored.
Get a grip, people.

Bruce,
Well at least the Obama plan doesn't have any George Bush death panels, like the 1999 Texas law he signed.

Swamp ruling: Banderman's opinion is his, and it's fair play in politics to have a strong opinion. Disagreeing with it doesnt make it over the top.

I love people who selectively read. This man's comment has nothing to do with absolute power - it's about taking "ownership" of ones ACTIONS. Wow, what a crazy concept for a head of state, to take responsibility for his entire administration's actions. Wouldn't it have been nice if the last one had taken ownership for his ACTIONS? Nahh, better to let half his staff be indicted while hiding behind the veil of "executive power". Using the "bizzaro" world interpretation of "I own it" - we would then all agree that the phrases "Im the decider", and "I'm a war president" should be considered words that were "spoken like a true narcissist, despot, or otherwise inflexible person in power; most likely absolute power." Ok then...back to reality. Taken out of context - the phrase "the buck stops here" (Truman) would probably fit someone's definition of narcissism. C'mon people...

The Obama followers are such hypocrites. Calling out Joe Wilson on his outburst? Please. Pelosi called Bush a liar for 6 years, and the dems booed him at a 2005 State of the Union address. The rules apparently are not for them, but for everyone else. Obama is a liar. Anyone who thinks this won't add to the deficit, increase taxes, cause rationing of care through long wait times, or lead to nationalized healthcare isn't thinking straight. You've been dazzled by the smoke and mirrors that is the almighty Obama. The almighty says the goverment can cure everything that ails you. How about HC reform that both parties can agree on...institute tort reform, and don't include a public option. Done!

Obama is certainly making the most of his access to the media. To me, this is overexposure and his message is on the verge of tedium. Some might say desperation.
It is clear that the next person elected to the presidency will need to be as media savvy as Obama, but hopefully they will be more aware of how overexposure can make one look desperate.

He owns all right, unfortunately, it will our kids and grand kids that are stuck with this bill on top of the $9,000,000,000,000 deficit.
Some states al;ready have gov't run health care. Can someone tell me a one of these states that don't have financial problems?
Can someone tell me a gov't social service program that meets the needs of its customers and has come in under budget?
As he stated in his speech to Congress this week that some of the "revenue" that will cover this $900 billion cost will be the savings that he can get from making Medicare more efficiient and reducing fraud. Why isn't he getting these dollars now?
Posted by: Terry | September 12, 2009 3:12 PM
Health care reform bills are over 1000 pages written by lawyers and promoted by a law professor. Not one sentence addressing medical tort reform. He said he would review proposals with as open mind.
1. Regarding a public option: Require the govenment to be the exclusive seller of malpractice insurance. Dispense the premiums 50% to cover claims and 50% to pay for the uninsured.
2. How about a 30% profits tax on all malpractice settlements? The revenue would go far in paying for reforms but you will never see a cabal of lawyers propose a tax they would have to pay. They will never propose a tax that would be paid out of lawyer’s profits. That is why the whole reform issue is a gimmick and a sham promoted by a gang who know how to campaign but no nothing about how to govern.

I don't pretend to understand American politics, but in my view there are two things that should not be done for profit. Healthcare and Education. When you drop all the propaganda can all Americans regardless of income say they can walk into any doctors office, xray office and not have to pay for services? If repubs don't want to pay for universal healthcare perhaps they should simply say that and stop hiding behind fear mongering and the word socialism. It is like saying they went to iraq for WMD...

How is this possible? None of the bills in Congress has Obimbo's name. In fact, he hasn't even read the bills and doesn't even know what is in them. So how can he own it? He basically has let Congress take the lead on this in regard to crafting the bills. This isn't like No Child Left Behind in which the Bush administration actively took part in the crafting of the bill. Or Ronald Reagan and the crafting of his tax cut legislation in the early 1980s.
This idiot says I and me more than any other president, and that even includes Clinton who said it a lot himself. As Banderman CORRECTLY pointed out, Obama is narcissistic to the hilt!

Why A Strong Public Option Is Essential - By jacksmith — Working Class
Robert Reich explains the pubic option: http://bit.ly/dDYSJ http://robertreich.blogspot.com/
It's not just because more than two thirds of the American people want a single payer health care system. And if they cant have a single payer system 77% of all Americans want a strong government-run public option on day one (86% of democrats, 75% of independents, and 72% republicans). Basically everyone.
It's not just because according to a new AARP POLL: 86 percent of seniors want universal healthcare security for All, including 93% of Democrats, 87% of Independents, and 78% of Republicans. With 79% of seniors supporting creating a new strong Government-run public option plan, available immediately. Including 89% of Democrats, 80% of Independents, and 61% of Republicans, STUNNING!!
It's not just because it will lower cost. Because a strong public option will dramatically lower cost for everyone. And dramatically improved the quality of care everyone receives in America and around the World. Rich, middle class, and poor a like.
It's not just because it will save trillions of dollars and prevent the needless deaths of millions more of YOU, caused by a rush to profit by the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!
It's not just because every expert in every field, including economist, and Nobel laureates all agree that free market based healthcare systems don't work. Never have and never will. The US has the only truly free market based healthcare system in the World. And as you all know now, IT IS A DISASTER!
It's not just because providing or denying medically necessary care for profit motivations is wrong. Because it is WRONG! It's professionally, ethically, and morally REPUGNANT!, Animalistic, VILE and EVIL.
THE REASON THE PUBLIC OPTION IS ESSENTIAL:
The public option is ESSENTIAL because over 200 million of you are trapped in the forest of the wolves. Which is the forest of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! With no way out except through needless inhumane suffering, and DEATH. While the wolves tear at your flesh, and rip you limb from lib. Then feast on your lifeless bodies like a dead carcase for transplant parts.
At the most vulnerable times of your lives (when you were sick and hurting), millions of you have had to fight and loose cruel, but heroic battles. Fighting against the big guns of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! in the forest of the wolves. All because you have no place else to go. You have no other CHOICE!
But the PUBLIC OPTION will give you someplace safe to go. And it will give us someplace safe to take you. The public option will be your refugium (your refuge). Where the wolves cannot get at you when your down, hurting, and vulnerable. Where everyone who needs it can find rest, security, comfort and the care they need. Protected by the BIG GUNS of We The People Of The United States. THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE AND COUNTRY ON EARTH.
This is why it is so critical that we do not lead another 50 million vulnerable, uninsured Americans into the forest of the wolves, without the protections of a Strong Government-run public option. We The People Of The United States MUST NOT LET THAT HAPPEN to any more of our fellow Americans. If healthcare reform does not contain a strong public option on day one. YOU MUST! KILL IT. Or you will do far more harm than good. And millions more will die needlessly. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. NO INDIVIDUAL MANDATES! without a Strong public option on day one.
To those who would continue to obstruct good and true healthcare reform for the American people, and who seek to trap millions more vulnerable Americans in the forest of the wolves. We will continue to fight you. We are prepared to wage all out war against you, and will eagerly DESTROY! you. Time...is...UP! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! No Co-op's! No Triggers!
Healthcare reform can be the GREATEST! Accomplishment of our time and century. A time when future generations may say of us, that we were all, AMERICAS GREATEST GENERATIONS.
BUT WE MUST ACT!
I therefore call on all my fellow Americans and the peoples of the World. To join us in this fight so that we may finish becoming the better America that we aspire to be for everyone.
SPREAD THE WORD!
I have been privileged to be witness as many of you fought, and struggled to take your first breath, and your last breath on this earth. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. Life is precious.
Whatever the cost. WE! MUST SUCCEED.
God Bless You My Fellow Human Beings

I watched the President live from Minnesota this afternoon.
It was the 2008 campaign all over again.
Only difference: I don't hear any challengers.
Win or lose, Obama wins because he is the knight in shining armor.
Every insurance premium bill, rescission notice, denial of coverage, rejection notice...
People will remember that Obama was the one who tried to reform the system.
So even if he loses he wins.
Because those people vote and they can figure out who blocked reform.
Or who tried to block reform and failed.
When was the last time you wrote your health insurer, if you have one, to tell them how happy you are with their performance?

Someone seriously needs to ask, what value do health insurance companies add to the health of the people of this nation. Health insurance companies are only middle men. In times of recession and depression middle men are usually the first to be faded out. Why in Gods name are the insurance companies not being faded out???? They add no value.

To blake erie:
You can't rewrite / warp history that way... Obama IS OUR President (we already took our country back from the cracker-right), and we owe him a chance to succeed where they failed. If the clowns and cry-babies on the whacko-right would put 1/4 of their fussin' energy into CONSTRUCTIVE work an any of the REAL issues challenging the nation (NOT imaginary `death panels', or obsessing about illegals who MIGHT access healthcare - when at least 350% more genuine CITIZENS currently lack reliable coverage), we could actually heal- and improve our nations.
But the Southern Bigots and Bed-Wetters are only interested in sinking Obama - and they don't understand that they are also sinking themselves by blowing holes in the hull of our Ship of State.
Posted by: nedclark | September 13, 2009 1:04 AM
Regarding death panels. What is it called when insurance companies delay or deny coverage for serious conditions such as cancer in order to save money? Even a short delay can be a death sentence. Recall the interview in SICKO when they interviewed a former health insurance employee who said she got fat bonuses for saving the company money by denying health care to people with legitimate claims? These stories are actually quite common now.
