So says the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said today that President Barack Obama's upcoming trip to Copenhagen is "nice" and "a noble idea," but not essential business for the president.

Steele began a brief telephone news conference by criticizing Obama's lack of focus on the biggest problem facing the country: weakness in the economy, which Steele said is still in recession. The former Maryland lieutenant governor said he had watched Obama push an economic stimulus plan, then "lurch into cap-and-trade, and then into health care," and now he's "pitching the Olympics in Copenhagen."

In answer to a reporter's question, Steele said it was "a noble idea for the president to pitch his home city, Chi-town" (at the International Olympic Committee's meeting on Friday in Copenhagen to choose a site for the 2106 Summer Games) and that America "would be more than honored to host the Olympics." But Steele went on to say that "at a time of war" and recession, "this trip, while nice, is not necessary for the president."

The overnight trip is seen as a risky political gamble for a president currently enmeshed in a number of difficult issues, from pushing an embattled Democratic health care plan through Congress to combatting Iran's nuclear ambitions and choosing a future course for the war in Afghanistan.

Steele said the president should be focusing on creating jobs now, not "job opportunities seven years from now" in Chicago. He said that First Lady Michelle Obama should have been the leading salesperson for the U.S. Olympic bid.

But when pressed on whether he regarded the president's trip as a mistake, Steele demurred. "Mistake is in the eye of the holder," he said, adding that he didn't know the judgment behind Obama's decision to go. Asked again, if, in his eyes at least, Obama was making a mistake, Steele responded, "I gave you my answer."

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, told later about Steele's remarks, asked if the RNC chairman is traveling to Rio de Janeiro or Madrid -- a couple of the other cities competing for the '16 summer games. "Who is he rooting for?" Gibbs asked of Steele.

Seems Steele's good eye has a blind spot. As he blasted Children singing praise of Obama during Black history month, he refused to address that school children from N.O. sang praise of Bush and FEMA in 2006. Double standard Steele?

Didn't this man just a few weeks ago, when economic indicators pointed in the direction that we were in the midst of recovery scoff and say it had nothing to do with Obama and Democratic Party policies but "What do free markets do? They heal thy self." I believe was his direct quote. So what is it buddy? Did the economy heal thy self or are we still in recession? Can't have it both ways.

Perhaps dear leader plans to finally free Greenland from Denmark's oppressive hand?

Dear God are we at all surprised that the RNC chairman found a way to disagree with Obama? Had he not gone and the games went elsewhere, you'd see the same story except he'd be slamming Obama for NOT going.

Can we have some real news for once and not more high school level gossip

Because the Economy is so weak is exactly why we need healthcare reform. If you lose your job today or tomorrow, who will pay you and your families' health care bills? And, if your job decides to opp out of paying your health care due to raising Premium costs, you will have to shoulder the burden yourself. But if we can get a healtcare bill through wherein all Americans are covered at a reasonable price, we will all benefit.

It is a sad stain on our society that Republicans and some Pundits spend more time in critiscising the President and Democrats than offering solution which help all of us. Most of this critiscism is petty jealousy and does not add to any positive agendas or upliftment. Many pundits spend the time they have nitpicking, picking apart, tearing apart and it is more ugly than contstructive. No wonder we have lost civility in this country. And, then there are those who want him to fear Doing Anything because he might Lose! We would never get anything done, any of us, if we lived by that premise. There will always be times when we do not get what we want, but that does not mean we have to stop trying.

President Obama has to stay in the public domain to continually answer and address the lies pomulgated against him daily. Thank God he is a Symbol of what a 21st President should act like -- able to do more than one thing at a time (multi-tasker) able to communicate, cooperative, inclusive, forward thinking and thoughtful

Steele said the president should be focusing on creating jobs now, not "job opportunities seven years from now"

Since when is trying to secure jobs in the future not a good idea? Oh I know, since the Republicans lost the elections.

If I were Michelle, I would be ticked off. Doesn't Obama think she can handle this?

On the bright side, maybe McCrystal can give himself a pass to Copenhagen and catch five minutes with POTUS.

$10 million of our hard-earned money down the drain for this trip.....

All so that Obama can get what he craves--more face time in front of the tv cameras. And to lobby to get Chicago the Olympics. Something that most Chicagoans don't want. Something that will cost us taxpayers another bundle. But something that corrupt Chicago politicians, plus a few well-connected friends of Obama (such as Valerie Jarrett) DO want.

All of this show by and for the Obamas clouds the truth that the Olympics are mainly a money machine for insiders in Chicago, the unions and the land developers. For the general public, the Olympics will mean travel headaches, higher prices in stores, and in the end, higher taxes to pay for the shortfall just as in Atlanta.

There is a news story fissure that Valerie Jarrett has a serious financial interest in getting some Olympics into the Windy City. Like the ACORN modus operandi, the LSM will certainly be sure to not look at this, but we can always be certain that the alpha Socialists are not going to miss an opportunity to make themselves rich. They never do. Poverty is for chumps, chumps who have to follow the rules, laws, and myriad of regulations that they, the alphas, will lay out for the rest of us, the chumps. Proletariat chumps are still chumps.

If the leftists / Socialists were true to their beliefs, the next available Olympics would be in Somalia, Lebanon, Venezuela, Libya, North Korea, or some similarly historically discriminated locale anyway. When are they going to get an Olympics? Surely it would be their turn by now. These model nations would be great for staging games and the like. Where is the “fairness” in this unfair insider process?

So the RNC Chairman believes that groundbreaking on 2016 Olympic projects won't begin until 2016??? This guy is a fool. Maybe he should pick up the phone and talk to Mitt Romney about the importance of not waiting until the last minute to build massive Olympic stadiums and all the other jobs that will be created. Stunning ignorance.

As someone who was born and raised in Chicago - I can't think of a better city to hold the Olympics. Chicagoans love their sports.

Good luck Chicago and President Obama!

Jamal, I'm betting that if Chicago gets the Olympics, Chcago real estate values will fall in anticipation of the tax levies necessary to pay off the inevitable cost overruns. If the Olympics come, get your pocketbook out of Chicago, out of Cook County, and out of Illinois if you can!

Yes, and I'm sure that all of the businesses who would make a killing off of the Olympics coming to Chicago agree with you.....NOT!

Quit being a Wingnutty partisan hack, Davey.

Django, what does this have to do with "the Leftists?" The decision is going to be made by the International Olympic Committee, which is mainly comprised of wealthy businessmen, and their #1 concern is economic viability. I'm pretty sure Somalia doesn't meet the test. North Korea is not even part of the international community. Venezuela? Let them go ahead on submit a bid. Maybe you don't understand this, but countries that don't submit a bid aren't going to be considered.
As for Michael Steele, he is the very definition of an "empty suit." His vision for America...doesn't seem to be a vision.

Yes, and it will be the politically connected cronies of the Chicago machine, mostly Democrats, who will make the killing, and the citizens of Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois, mostly Democrats, judging by recent voting records, who will be paying for it for decades to come.

Michael "hiphop makeover" Steele is the gift that keeps on giving.....to Democrats.

Robert Gibbs responded to Steele in today's press briefing:

In today's Tribune about Obama going to the Olympics, there's a paragraph that explains it all: the White House said it believed it was the FIRST TIME a sitting president had gone to lobby for the Olympics.

That's what Obama is all about. He has to be first at something. Or at least he has to be able to SAY he's first at something. This is all about his ego, nothing more.

Jake, I do get it. I know how the process works but will the IOC decision be totally free of political influence? If so, then why would Team Mustapha expend time and energy pursuing it? If not, then because the issue has already been raised, whether the LSM pursues it or not, then there does need to be just a little bit more transparency than we are normally accustomed to seeing if we are to believe that this is a legitimate pursuit of economics, Windy City pride, piety, or however it may be labelled.

I'm pretty sure that they ~ Somalia, etc. don't meet the criteria also, but someone has to stand up for the Have-Nots of the World Community. Maybe they just did not bid because they could not understand the form or have the entry fee. Whatever. Someone needs to speak up for them. democrats are normally all about "fairness". More importantly, these fine, exotic, locales seem to have the type of government apparati that democrats are so quick to praise. Did not mean to offend no socialists, but when will it be their turn, the Have-Nots that is, for Olympic glory. If the rules have not been followed, then in the name of "fairness", change the rules. Why not. Allow me to be most serious here; unless Newt 2010 comes along, this could well be Mustapha's enduring legacy to Amerika.

He has to be first at something.

and the depth he will go to do it......imagine, being born black just to be first. Brilliant!

Django.......I am confused as to why you refer to Obama as a song written by Freddie Mercury. Is it your love of music? or other innuendo right down to the K in America? I would have imagined that with your penchant for the "latino" ladies, you would have suggested Mexico. Tell me how you will plan on convincing your fellow "conservatives" on achieving this.

Ah, the poor widdle Wingnuts......

Hey there, bill r.
I am always receptive to new knowledge. I am not a Queen fan, so I did not know that Freddie Mercury was on to this in an earlier period in time. Now, I have to look into that. On a personal level, I could like the guy, President Obama that is, in that we seem to have the same kind of self-deprecating sense of humor. Politically, I cannot abide very easily in the loss of freedom and economic opportunity. It does seem to be very non-American to me. I find it more than a bit stunning that there are not more Americans with a 'c' that would seem to share my view. My Mustapha Mond model is from “Brave New World”. Aldous Huxley, circa 1931, rather than F.M., seems to be so prescient with regard to the administration of the 44th American president. How could he have known all of this? That is a mystery for the ages.

Mexico is a genuine mystery to me. I like the place, but the poverty can be on a level kind of hard to adjust to. The expatriates that I come in contact with, work so hard and with all the attention to detail that goes beyond anything within reason in doing the work that they do. I am including engineering work in that mix, as well. I would tell anyone that there has to be something about their stinking Socialist government that keeps them at a continuing economic disadvantage. The pretty Latinas that I am closest to, hold Mexico as a nice memory, assuming they were ever there at all, but they will NOT go back on a one way ticket. That’s with me or without me. Hence, here I remain also. America, despite all of its alleged short-comings suits them just fine.

My fellow conservatives probably could not be sold on ‘Olympics In Mexico’, but then as I said, neither do the pretty Latinas appreciate it the way that I do either. The majority of the people usually are nice and friendly to a hybrid gringo like me. The nicest hotels in Mexico are Xtremely nice. They don’t even know that the shower heads are supposed to be scaled back to a little dribble of water flow. I still value personal hygiene even though Liberals do not.

‘Olympics in Mexico’ could work, in that they do know how to be great hosts but their politics can be a bit foul and reach down and kick u too. I certainly doubt that I could sell this to my fellow conservatives or probably anyone far removed from Mexico. I would be, I am, in a party of one, that is 1 more than the number 0.

Certainly I do love the indigenous and expatriated ladies especially when they, surprisingly, like me back, but Mexico also would not be a model of perfection at this point. U kind of got me there. I just want liberals to not forget their core values of “fairness” since no one else would have that sense of “right” and that’s “right” not in the political context, but as God or someone with a near-perfect moral bearing would correctly define “right”.

"Django" aka Scotty from Texas, is one of the morons who "proudly" gave us Shrub Jr and The Dick Cheney.

We folk down here in little ole Hyde Park sure never thought we'd have the Western White House and the Olympics here at the same time.....

But bids fair to come true...

Something in the water perhaps.....

Actually our water is very good.

That famous filtration tower around 63rd street....

Now, how are they going to build the Presidential Library with the Olympics going on?

I think Hyde Park should de-annex itself from the City of Chicago.

Build some high walls and keep all these strangers out of our quiet little town.....

As a former resident of the state of Illinois. I find that this is just payback to his cronies in the most corrupt state in the union. It begs the question "When are the people going to wake up". The corruption, the pay offs, the fixes that always taint most everything that goes on in the state. Just because the Olympics would come to Chicago, does not guarantee, success. Which means the money has to come from somewhere. Can you say higher income taxes? or how about higher property taxes? and last but not least higher sales taxes?. Wake up people your being taken to the cleaners, by your beloved politicians.

Yeah, because even though bringing the Olympics to Chicago was not President Obama's idea and in fact he had nothing to do with it, you're just going to go ahead and blame it on him and then try to throw in the old "Chicago political corruption" red herring for good measure, because as a Republican you don't have anything else.

GOOD LUCK CHICAGO AND PRESIDENT OBAMA!

Attn; Leo t
Look around you it has nothing to do with Republican or even Democrats.Chicago is one of leaders when it comes to being overtaxed!. Just go down the list, real estate, city stickers, sales taxes and on and on. All the while the gang problems are getting worse. The Chicago machine, it seems is only interested in getting re-elected and their own vested interest. The good citizens of Chicago deserve better, something more than being handed the bill for every wild dream city hall can come up with.

Been 40 years since I was in the service stationed in Chi town.
Still the same crime ridden, corrupt, play to the affirmative action unqualified clowns, and overtax everyone and everything.
Let acorn and its' flunkies run the town like Daly and Al did. Maybe they can screw it up worse.
People out here in the west give the biggest of horse laughs to you suckers.
