The Swamp

by Mark Silva

"You lie!''

"I wouldn't dignify you by peeing on your leg.''

Is everyone getting all "wee-weed up?"

Or just plain "un-American?"

They're finger-biting!

It's "rude,'' is what it is -- the health-care debate.

Or, at least, that's the way most Americans paying attention say they see it.

"Most Americans say the tone of the debate has been negative,'' Andy Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, reports today.

Pew's News Interest Index survey, conducted Sept. 11-14 among 1,003 adults, found 53 percent saying the tone of the debate over health care reform has been generally rude and disrespectful -- just three in ten see it as generally polite and respectful.

Who are the offenders?

"Among those who say the debate has been rude and disrespectful, most believe that opponents of the health care legislation under consideration are to blame,'' Kohut reports. "By a 59 percent to 17 percent margin, more blame opponents than supporters of the legislation; 17 percent volunteer that both groups are to blame.''

Among Democrats who view the debate as rude, 85 perccent blame opponents of health care legislation. By contrast, 18 percent of the Republicans put the blame on opponents, while many more (45 percent) say supporters are to blame.

What do you say? In printable form, please.

Back in April, the Daily Show's Jon Stewart offered some sound advice for frothing at the mouth Tea Baggers, "I think you might be confusing tyranny with losing." Now five months after their Tax Day outburst, thousands of vein-popping Obama opponents descended Saturday on Washington for Tea Party II. But while Glenn Beck's furious followers alternately slandered the President as a "fascist," a "communist" and worse, they remained unencumbered by either the thought process - or the truth.

>> Here, then, are 10 Lessons for the toothless Tea Baggers:

1 - President Obama Cut Your Taxes

2 - The Stimulus is Working

3 - First Ronald Reagan Tripled the National Debt...

4 - ...Then George W. Bush Doubled It Again

5 - Republican States Have the Worst Health Care

6 - Medicare is a Government Program

7 - Barack Obama is Not a Muslim

8 - Barack Obama was Born in the United States

9 - 70,000 Does Not Equal 2,000,000

10 - The Economy Almost Always Does Better Under Democrats

It's hard to have a "conversation" when one side (GOPer Teabaggers) can't think for themselves, can't count and can't spell.

Oh yeah? But Stephan Halking would have died sooner as English!
there!

I remeber a time (just months ago) when the term tea-bagging was considered off color, not to be used around children and relegated to back corners of drinking bars.

So much for civility.

"Rude"?
How about Jimmy Carter calling Obama opponents "racist"? I guess that vile charge is "ok" with Swamp writers .....

Or how about Swamp posters? I did a search of just one recent Swamp article on Joe Wilson, and Obama supporters called Obama opponents:
"Repuglicans"
"wingnuts"
"zombie"
"idiot"
"nutty"
"moron"
"lunatics"
"domestic terrorists"
"thugs"
"childish"
"goons"
and, often, "racists"

And I only made it through the first 1/3 of the postings!

By any objective standard, the Left is much more rude than the Right. We had 8 years of Bush=Hitler/Shrub/Chimpy, to prove that.

It's not rude - it's MEAN spirited. It's hateful. The mud-slinging at Obama and the Democrats is very divisive. I do believe it is backfiring on the GOP. Just as another poster referred to himself as a "former Republican" I would identify with that as well. I've read articles, blogs, etc written by people who consider themselves former Republicans. People who do not fall for the Fox News/Rush Limbaugh lies and hate talk are running from that party as fast as they can. Really, if you find that you are a small town American, not educated above the high school, associates degree and even college level, you find yourself thinking Obama is the next Hitler or that he is a racist or socialist - please consider that you have been totally brainwashed. Prove it to yourself this way - write down everything that you are hearing from the GOP talking heads and then over time see if any of it comes true. I know people who are stock piling canned goods. Who walk around saying "I'm so afraid". Folks, if that is you - turn off your tv! Stop consuming hateful, distructive media. You aren't hurting anyone but yourself. You aren't changing anyone's minds. You are just doing the bidding of rich politicians and tv pundits. They are laughing at you and so are we.

These Teabagging idiots are the lowest form of human life in America today. Only people with the IQ of a brick would be stupid to avoid doing any sort of personal research and soley rely on Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, O'Reilly Hannity etc for all of their information.

For example, take their blind hatred and rage towards all things ACORN. You'll find idiots in every single organization in America if you look hard enough but the reality is that ACORN has thousands of employees and the vast majority of them spend their days trying to help poor people through perfectly legal means (and receive very little compensation for doing so). Even before yesterday's Senate vote, the amount of federal money that went to ACORN was very small. This is a relatively insignificant organization in the grand scheme of things, but it's an organization that has unquestionably fought over the years to improve the lives of the less fortunate in this country.

That the GOP and its conservative supporters would single out this particular organization for such intense demonization is telling. In September of last year, the entire world came perilously close to complete financial catastrophe. We're still not out of the woods and we're deep within one of the worst recessions in U.S. history. This situation was brought about by the recklessness and greed of our banks and financial institutions, most of which had to be bailed out at enormous cost to the American taxpayer (exponentially more than all of the tax dollars given to ACORN over the years). The people who brought about this near catastrophe, for the most, profited immensely from it. These very same institutions, propped up by the American taxpayer, are once again raking in large profits.

But rather than focus their anger on these folks, conservatives choose to go after an organization composed almost entirely of low-paid community organizers, an organization that could never hope to have even a small fraction of the clout or the ability to affect the overall direction of the country that Wall Street bankers have. ACORN's relative lack of political influence was on full display yesterday, when the U.S. Senate (in which Democrats have a supermajority) not only entertained a vote to defund ACORN, but approved it by a huge margin (with only seven Democrats opposing).

Nice picture of Rep. Wilson's sister. Too bad we couldn't see her face.

This is a typical trick (see Teresa above) from the Right Wing Lunatic Fringers.

Say or do something that is not only stupid but offensive to 99.9% of Americans, and then when you get called out on it - play the "victim" card.

Waaaaaah!

"1 - President Obama Cut Your Taxes"

Really? How and when did he do that? By allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire, everyone's income taxes will go back to Clinton administration marginal rates and compressed brackets. That will result in real increases for all taxpayers, including folks in the middle class.

"2 - The Stimulus is Working "

That's rather a far-fetched claim considering that over 90% of the stimulus money remains unspent. Does that mean we can repeal the unspent billions?

Facts, as they say, are stubborn things. You really need to lay off the Kool-Aid and learn to think for yourself.

That most Republicans blame supporters of reform for the tone of the debate proves what a bunch of goons they truly are. They cannot be serious, can they?

I always knew that the mouth breathers who make up what's left of the Republican party couldn't read if their life depended on it. Thanks for proving me right again, Sparky.

The GOPer Tea Baggers continue to display their fundamental misunderstanding of U.S. history and the American Revolution. Apparently, the right-wing zealots are outraged by no taxation with representation.

As promised, Barack Obama in the stimulus package delivered on his pledge of tax relief for 95% of American households. Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) didn't only jump start gross domestic product and refill empty state coffers in the second quarter of 2009. As Nate Silver thoroughly documented, "Obama has cut taxes for 98.6% of working households."

Nevertheless, raging GOPer Tea Baggers spouting Republican Tax Day lies took to the streets not to thank the President, but to blame him for the tax cuts they received.

You wouldn't know what a "fact" was if it hit you in the face and knocked out one of your three remaining teeth.

Come on, Kathy, this is beyond lame. Surely you can point me to some specifics? What are the new brackets and marginal rates going to be under Obama's imaginary cuts?

She just did, you Clown.

I think Grumpy is really Terry ;-P

Grumpy,
You have to admit, BHO called the bottom of the market in March.

former Republican,
#3A would be;
Clinton balanced the budget.

Former Republickin,

A couple more items.

1. I hit the trifecta (GWB)
2. Reagan proved deficits don't matter. (Cheney)

Sorry Whiney Scottie, I'm not Grumpy.

As a matter of fact, 15 months from now, all American Income Tax Payers will have their taxes increase. For higher income tax payers, the Bush income tax reductions will expire. For the lower and middle class income tax payers, those reductions in tax brackets BO put in place this year (a whopping $15/wk), will expire at the end of 2010.

Also, Bo did not cut taxes for the lowest 95% of tax payers this year, since he raised cig taxes (that effects 20% of the population and effects all income tax brackets).

As far as the health care, why doesn't BO first address the $9,000,000,000,000 projected deficit?

After I pointed out the incivility of Leftists, we can read what Leftist posters above say. Take a look. To them, Obama opponents are (and I quote): "Republickin" "mouth breathers" who "can't read if their life depended on it," "right-wing zealots" who do "childish hissy fits," "goons", "lunatic fringers" and "idiots" who "are the lowest form of human life," with the "IQ of a brick," "idiots" who "can't think for themselves, can't count and can't spell."

Thanks for proving my point!

And all this was posted one week after Mark Silva announces that he'll insist on civility in the Swamp! Mark, are you going to insist on civility from your Leftist readers?

Thanks for proving my point!
Posted by: Dorothy Post | September 17, 2009 9:17 AM

Oh please.....trying to prove civility for left or right in the swamp is just ridiculous. Perception IS reality...so save your breath.

" C.Morris": Actually he didn't. Gingrich and Clinton balanced the budget, but the biggest contributor was the dot com bubble.

Rick
