It's been quite some time since we heard from "the silent majority.''
It was then-President Richard Nixon who maintained, 40 years ago, that there were a lot of Americans who did not sympathize with all the protests against the Vietnam war taking place, a silent majority whose voices were obscured by a small but vocal chorus.
It is Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin who suggests today -- Sunday, actually -- that the silent majority is ready for health-care reform. It's significant that the Iowa Democrat is saying this, inasmuch as he has taken the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee vacated by the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
Harkin, speaking with reporters at a Democratic fundrasiwer in Iowa, suggested that Congress will deliver President Barack Obama a bill "before we go home for Christmas." And that measure, he predicted, will include a government insurance option.
Harkin suggests there is little political risk in backing health care reform -- the real danger lies in opposing change. Harkin maintains: "There is a silent majority all over America that understands we need health care reform and we need it now."
Play the analogy through, however, and remember that the United States withdrew from Vietnam. That vocal minority prevailed, unless there really was no silent majority.

Comments
The Bush Administration, the Pentagon, Nancy Pelosi and the Republicans believe it is correct for U.S. soldiers to give their life and blood--and for U.S. citizens to give their recession dollars so that all Iraq citizens can have universal health care. Article 31 of the Bush created, military protected and American funded Iraq Constitution deemed this to be law. (If that is law, lets investigate to see how it is working.) Why do Republicans not want universal health care for Americans--here in America? Is an American life worth less than an Iraqi life? How many trillions of dollars are Americans paying so that all Iraqis can have free, universal health care? Republicans, et al, seem un-American, and in favor of the U.S. treasury being depleted for Iraqi health and nation building--to the exclusion and detriment of our own citizens. Due to this, the U.S.Republicans, et al, now are the biggest hypocrites and America-haters in the world.

Question: How can the U.S. Government force, support, and/or give universal health care to the citizens of Iraq and not to its own citizens?????

There may be a silent majority of Americans who favor reform, including a public option. I myself would be among them. But, from where I stand, Congress has no credibility to bring in a new program that looks like even bigger government. They might be able to win back some trust if they would ROLL back infringements on liberty such as digital surveillance, gun control, free speech "zones", and detention without charge. We've been watching our Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms erode for decades, and a lot of the anger out here is over THAT.

Can the gov't manage any social program that meets the customers' needs and is under budget?
Do any of the various state run healthcare plans run w/o busting the state's budget?
Come on libs - step up and show the prrof that gov't run health care won't add to Obama's $9,000,000,000,000 deficit.

Rah Rah Scot-The Swamp , as far as I can tell, is supposed to be a NEWS outlet. You do understand that the press has some constitutional rights based on the idea that they are supposed to be neutral reporters of government activity -not participants ..right?

Rah Rah to you too HYPOCRITE!! Are you suggesting that FOX is neutral??? If your losing party had anything significant to offer I trust that Mark and the rest of the gang at the Tribune would write about it. However, your losing MORONS dont so shut that hole in your head until you and your party has something relevant to say!!

KGB123,
I've got history on my side. Is Social Security under its original budget? NO
In 1937 when the first social security deduction was made from employees' paychecks, it took 2% (employee and employer match) of the first $3,000 of earnings, for a total of $60. Today, it takes 12.4% of the first $106,800 of an employees' earnings for a total of $13,243. That is a 220-fold increase over the original plan.
How about Medicare? In 1966 when Medicare deductions first started coming out of employee paychecks, it was .7% of the first $6,600 for a total of $46.20. Today, its 2.9% of all employee earnings. Medicare benefits have no realtionship to the amount of contributions made. It basically is health insurance welfare for seniors.
Let's see how the states are doing

Hawaii - http://www.heartland.org/publications/health%20care/article/24323/Hawaii_Seeking_More_Money_for_Health_Plan.html
Tennessee - even from a Purple Shirt SEIU article

Massachusetts?

With history as my guide, I'll bet gov't run health care runs a deficit.
What do you have KGB123 other than "step up and prove that gov't run health care will add to the deficit that the previous administration created thru negligence and ignorance and deciept."?
I never realized that the previous administration created teh projected $9,000,000,000,000 for 2010-19, I thought those were BO's numbers.

Unlike you-I try to pay attention to what makes sense about an issue and then draw my own conclusions. So your hero worshipping cheerleader support of the Swamp ("...The swamp stands behind the President of the United States...") stood out as sufficiently myopic to cause me to respond and as usual, your response borders on the unhinged. I am not going to defend Fox, the Swamp, or any news outlet...and I am definetly not going to take things as personally as you apparently do.... ( Really?- I have to "...shut that hole in your head until you and your party has something relevant to say!!...").
Relax son- your eyes are bugging out!

Heartburn,
Don't worry what the MORON from Canada is saying. He has no facts, just screams MOROn all the time.
Posted by: Terry | September 14, 2009 5:51 PM
Sorry heartburn if I hurt your feelings but you and that stalker (who posted below you) never really make true comparisons. Terry is always counting a projected deficit while you make no sense at all. Its no secret Im not the only one in here who feels that way.
And Terry, as usual you never listen. I'm an American citizen living in Canada, how does that remotely have anything to do with this??? Are you suggesting any Americans who live outside of the continental US are no longer Americans? You're being an A** as usual.

Horray!!! Healthcare for all. . you too, Tiny Tim! :-)

Scottie,
There you go lying again, I thought you said you weren't responding to my posts? Anyway, I forgot you went to Canada for the free health care even though you make more money than I could imagine.
As far as BO's projected deficits, he has got a good start with the actual thing. So far in his seven full months in office (starting Feb 09), he has accumulated a deficit of $982 billion. In the 96 months of President Bush's time in office, he had a deficit of $2.627 Trillion. BO has accumulated 37% of the Bush defcits in just seven short months.

Just glad I'm not a MORON.

Lets not leave out the 80 billion used for two wars not included in Bush's numbers and Bush's record 480 billion when he left office. Who's the liar?
I moved to Canada for other reasons buddy. It just so happens free healthcare comes with it.
A d since you hace this disdain for lying, when will Bush and Cheney apologize for their lies about the Iraq war???

Scottie,
That $80 billion for the war was not included in his budget, but is included in the actual expenditures. The $480 billion deficit has nothing to do with BO's $9 Trillion deficit. Bush could have left $480 billion in surplus, and BO would still be showing a $9 Trillion deficit (except interest expense). The $9 Trillion is all BO and that even includes all the tax increases coming in 2011.
President Bush and Vice-President Bush will probably apologize for their "lies" on what got us into the Iraq war when Bill Clinton does on why he bombed Baghdad for 4 days. After it all, it was the same intellgence on WMDs that resulted in both outcomes.
