(The appearance above had not helped Van Jones' cause at a time when the White House is enmeshed in a fight with Republicans and conservatives within its own party over helath-care reform, energy and other initiatives.)
by Mark Silva and updated
Van Jones, a White House environmental adviser who had attracted searing criticism from conservatives for his past political activism and had raised eyebrows anew for recent harsh remarks about Republicans, has resigned overnight.
Jones had become a lightning rod for critics in a White House that has faced increasingly stormy weather in its push for a health-care overhaul as well as its initiatives in combating climate change.
"On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me," Jones said in a resignation statement released near midnight Saturday. "They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide."
Jones, dubbed the "green czar'' by critics accusing President Barack Obama of amassing power in the hands of presidential advisers who are exempt from Senate confirmation, also had become a singular target for FOX News Commentator Glenn Beck, accusing the administration of harboring Communists and other radicals..
FOX's Beck zeroed in on Jones after a group that Jones had co-founded, ColorofChange, started an advertising boycott against Beck's TV program after Beck stated on another FOX show that Obama is "a racist.''
Republican Sarah Palin has been encouraging followers on her Facebook page to watch Beck's program.
Jones had issued two public apologies recently, one for signing a petition in 2004 that had questioned whether Bush administration officials "may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war," another for saying at a public forum that Republicans "are a---holes.
Obama "is not'' one, Jones had added.
The White House, for its part, had not gone out of its way to defend Jones, with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs saying the other day that Jones "continues to work in the administration.''
Today, Obama political adviser David Axelrod maintained that resigning was Jones' "own decision'' -- and he "commended him'' for it. "The political environment is rough, '' Axelrod said in an appearance on NBC News' Meet The Press, "so these things get magnificd, but the bottom line is he showed his commitment to creating green jobs in this country by removing himself as an issue.''
Jones, who specialized in promoting environmentally friendly employment for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, maintained that he had been "inundated with calls from across the political spectrum urging me to stay and fight,'' but said he could not ask his colleagues to spend time and energy defending or explaining his past.
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
Jones had said that the petition on the Sept. 11 attacks "certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever." And of his other remark about Republicans, he said, "If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize."
Republicans were not accepting Jones' apologies...
Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana had said Jones' "extremist views and coarse rhetoric have no place in this administration or the public debate." Sen. Chris Bond of Missouri had said Congress should investigate Jones's fitness for the job. On Saturday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, wrote on his Twitter account that "Van Jones has to go."
"Can the American people trust a senior White House official that is so cavalier in his association with such radical and repugnant sentiments?'' asked Bond (R-Mo).
Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House environmental council, accepted Jones' resignation in a statement early today, saying that "Over the last six months, he had been a strong voice for creating jobs that improve energy efficiency and utilize renewable resources. We appreciate his hard work and wish him the best moving forward."

Interesting spin, here. Jones shouldn't go because his past actions would never have allowed him past the Senate vetting process had he had to go through one. Jones shouldn't go because he has fairly extremist views or because he called, on television, Republicans somehting you shouldn't say on television. No, you manage a whole bunch of snide remarks about Sarah Palin -- what does she have to do with this? -- and Glenn Beck (and by the way, I don't watch him, I can't tell you what station he's on and I'm pretty sure he's a blowhard), and it's THEIR fault this idiot is gone.
How about assessing whether more than 30 top-level advisers should be in place in the WH, circumventing the checks and balances about reporting to COngress. What we have is a WH fiefdom, and a pretty incompetent one at that.

Controversy? What controversy? I don't recall reading about him in your newspaper - or were you covering up for Obama?
Posted by: Tea Party | September 6, 2009 8:26 AM
The real question is how does someone with such radical views get on the President's team? We all know the answer. President Obama shares the same views as Van Jones. The difference between Obama and Jones is that Obama is (usually) smart enough to not let them get recorded - unless he is talking about income redistribution.

Beck is a complete nutjob. He's been the only one going after Jones, and he was saying Obama is setting up a shadow government and Jones wanted to put in place forced sterilizations to keep the population low so we'd be more environmentally friendly. That is just utter nonsense, but people who watch Beck believe it to be true. If you want to see stunningly uninformed analysis of something watch Beck try to argue that J.D. Rockefeller was a Communist by analyzing the murals on the Rockefeller Center building. It would be funny if it wasn't for the fact that stupid people believe everything he says.

This is a huge victory for libertarians over communists.
This is not a liberal vs. conservative thing. This is a libertarian vs. totalitarian battle.
Beck is a self-described "libertarian." Van Jones a self-described "radical Communist."
Watch how the media will try to put the label "conservative," on Beck, instead of libertarian.

What controversy? How can you have controversy when no one in the mainstream media -- ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, Wash. Post, NYT, Chi. Trib., etc -- has even mentioned this person'sname in the past two weeks prior to today?
Nope, you MS'ers just ignored an avowed communist being a czar in the Obama administration. Maybe you should vett at each and every one of these czars as somehow Congress will not.
Don't pin this on anyone but Obama.

How can any liberal in the right mind support Jones? They know he's trash. Beck and Palin have nothing to do with this...credit youtube for allowing America see for ourselves the rhetoric that came out of this man's mouth. He indicted himself. There should also be a review of the other "czars" - since they are being paid $170K+ of tax payor money and who do not report to congress but only the president. Are any of the czars affiliated w/ Republicans? Didn't think so. Czars are pushing the lefties agenda and should be held in check.

As even a casual reading of this or any other Tribune message board will reveal, Jones was right about Republicans. But the serious problem with this is that Republicans, having been voted out of power, still are driving government down into the sewer. Lacking a majority of the electorate, they now govern solely by smear job and hissy fit. They are pathetic, but somehow in charge, just like a spoiled child that controls his family.

As BO's favorite baseball play-ny-play man would say - HE GONE.
The only thing that was used against Mr. Jones was his own words. The fact that Fox, Beck, and various internet sites brought them to light is irrelavant. The sad thing is, as Don put so well, is that if you just watched the MSM, you wouldn't know who Jones was.

However, weaknesses in vetting and staff performances may well impair him.
This weekend I'm having all the brush cleared away around my house--several years' growth....
It's way beyond ornamental....
Maybe Obama should do some pruning and new planting around the WH about now.....

I'm curious as to how Mark Silva says Palin played a role in this. Glenn Beck made Van Jones an issue. Sarah Palin is a fan of Glenn Beck. Hence, Palin called for the outster of Jones? You are losing it, Mark. Remember a couple weeks ago I suggested you take a vacation and clean out those cob webs. Do it!
Anyway, apparently Van Jones was a "truther." Funny, how we got gobs and gobs of Swamp trash about "birthers," but nothing about the "truthers," which Jones was/is.
Oh and Mark, Sean Hannity also made a big deal of Van Jones, talking about him most everyday this week. Give him some credit too! And, for the record, Mark, Glenn Beck made a big deal of Van Jones and his whacked out views LONG before ColorOfChange enacted its ad boycott of Beck.
But, Beck's ratings are stronger than ever. So, it seems Glenn Beck defeated Van Jones, Barack Obama and the mainstream media because as several have noted, very few media outlets even covered the Van Jones controversy til today.
Speaks more about the power of the people than the power of the media.

Just to name a few more, less we forget; 5-day work week, 8-hour work day, child labor laws, safe work environments and of course, fair labor practices. Have you hugged a union worker, today? They too, have given a lot to make the American workplace safer and fairer !! It wasn't the union worker that gave us the Wreck on Wall Street, the Bandits in the Boardrooms, or the Greed Creed of Corporate America !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

You can't be serious, J.D.: Sarah Palin encourages some 850,000 followers of her FaceBook site on Aug. 26 to watch Glenn Beck, as he is in the height of his Van Jones assault and his viewership is rising, and she played no role? This was a media power play, all right, and it's curious that another commentator left FOX out of the list of MSM.

This story will either mark a new beginning for the press in this country, or newspapers and broadcasts will start dropping like flies. There is no standard of news by which having an avowed communist idiot and 9/11 'Truther' serving in your administration does not constitute news. It reflects badly on the press that they NEVER covered this, and it reflects poorly on Obama that he put a communist in charge of a jobs program - just how stupid is that?
Posted by: Tea Party | September 6, 2009 10:05 AM
Glenn Beck did not "zero in" on Van Jones after Jones started the boycott. Beck did two segments on Jones' controversial background in July (on the 23rd and the 28th). Beck called Pres. Obama a racist on July 28th. That statement started the boycott Beck movement.
The media makes this sound like some sort of vendetta on Beck's part. Trad'l media is behind the curve and it looks like they have failed to do their job with this administration. That is why people have been getting information from other sources.

I have been skeptical of claims that the mainstream media is biased. Granted most journalists were for Obama in the election; but one example doesn't prove the case. However the Van Jones story has changed my mind. This story was totally ignored by CBS,NBC, ABC, CNN, Washington Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, etc. Van Jones is a very radical guy and his background was news. Some one who had his views being assigned as a "Czar" with no congressional oversight was news. The Czar system itself is constitutionally questionable and should be news. But apparently it isn't and the only possible reason for it is bias. Now I wonder about the other "czars." What are their backgrounds? But I suppose that isn't news either.

Jones probably could have been confirmed.
Geithner did, and he "forgot" to pay taxes amounting to over $39 K as I recall, even though every year he signed a statement acknowledging he knew tax was not being withheld by the outfit he was working for (World Bank?).....
There is a double standard at work here.
Roberts was confirmed twice , Court of Appeals and SCt, even though his career was devoted to bashing employees in discrimination cases, disability cases, etc.
He wasn't held to account for those right wing actions.
He was "just representing clients".
The same defense should be available to Jones here.
But I understand why he had to walk the plank....
However, now there is blood in the water and the sharks will come a'swimmin', won't they?
There were many far right deputy secretaries of this and that throughout Reagan/Bush/Bush and the wimps in the Democratic caucus let them all slide by.
They were just as far to the right as Jones apparently is to the left.

Actually, score one for the country. I'm sure most Trib readers are scratching their heads on this one. Who the heck is Van Jones and what controversy are they talking about. Despite the fact the Tribune, New York Times, CNN , CBS, NBC, ABC et al, did everything in their power to hide the facts about this guy, FOX News and the internet managed to get enough information out about this lunatic, he was forced to resign from his position in the Obama administration. And the amazing thing- Mark Silva still won't tell you the facts about this fellow. Go over to Youtube and you can view a plethora of Van Jones videos as this this junior version of Rev Wright spews his racists rants. Hear him talk about white environmentalists polluting minority communities. Or listen to the recording he produced that features cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal and others denouncing evil America. Believe it or not, this goofball actually became a Communist back in the 90's- just about the same time the Soviet Unpin and everyone else was abandoning it. But you won't hear about that from Silva or the Trib or any other mainstream media with the exception of FOX. Obama just threw another one of his supporters under the bus. While he did it to save his on hide, for once, it's also a move that's good for the country.

"What's amazing here is the fact that someone with Jones' background, public statements and beliefs got into the White House in an advisory position in the first place. When you add in all of the Cabinet officials who either got a hall pass for tax problems, or had their nominations scuttled because of tax problems, it's clear that the vetting process suffers as much from Barack Obama's inexperience as have many of his policy decisions over the last eight months.
What's also amazing here is the way this story achieved critical mass without so much as a whisper in most of the traditional mainstream media sources across the country. Byron York of the Washington Examiner noted as much Saturday by purposefully monitoring the Big 3 networks' evening news broadcasts, and the major newspapers. Here's what York found.
"From a Nexis search a few moments ago:
Total words about the Van Jones controversy in the New York Times: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy in the Washington Post: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy on NBC Nightly News: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy on ABC World News: 0.
Total words about the Van Jones controversy on CBS Evening News: 0.
- - -
After the Jones controversy reached a boiling point on Friday, the Washington Post published a story, "White House Says Little on Embattled Jones," on page A-3 of its Saturday edition. But the New York Times remained silent on the story.
Likewise, on Friday night the "CBS Evening News" reported the Jones matter, but ABC's "World News" and "NBC Nightly News" again failed to report the story."
Van Jones is out of the White House this evening ... because of a handful of blogs that did the job that mainstream media refuses to do now that an ideologue of like mind inhabits the Oval Office."

It just means they have critical thinking abilities. There are many credible experts who question the story as well. Why is there such paranoia people can't even ask questions???Jones had a backbone and the power-elite can't stand that. Bruce, great post. It is amazing that the mainstream media basically didn't report anything about Van Communist until he resigned and we had to rely on Fox and some blogs to do this job. Wow. This is why WE MUST STOP turning on our TV's to anything but Fox. Thank god for Fox, they tell the truth and expose thigns for what they are. I am so sick and tired of Obama. Quite simply put, he is basically a foreign intellectual who stands for nothing this Country was founded upon. Please walk away Obama before you ruin this country even more. Transperancy? Expansion of power by the bush administration? What??? Yeah, because 32 czars who avoid senate confirmation is not a clear expansion of power. The bottom line is Obama has done everything he said he wouldn't and done things that clearly are against his campaing platform, yet liberals just can't see this. Liberals are just way too naive and brainwashed to not see what is going on right now. The bottom line folks, these arrogant, elitist "intellectuals" think they are smarter than everyone else. If this statement is untrue, then why appoint 32 unconfirmed czars? Because they think we won't notice or figure this out. Why does our first lady employ something like 25+ personal secretaries, coordinators and assistants when no other first lady had more than a few?? At a time like this too-yeah Michelle, you really are one with the people. Obama is the worst thing to ever happen to this Country and the sad thing is that you people actually voted for him. Unbelievable. You were warned. Wait, you were begged not to do it. You were told what could happen and what these nutjobs were capable of. Now, you are finally listening as public sentiment would seem to inidicate. I think Ill go transfer some more of what's left of my assets to another country. After all, if Pelosi gets her way, 50% of it will go to the government anyhow. What a joke.
P.S. check out the tax rates in New York, New Jersey, etc. for the top tax brackets under the proposed health care reform bill. Ouch, those folks will basically be working to support indigents and illegals. Great plan. If this isn't communism, I have no idea what is. Liberals, you folks are complete jokes. You call yourselves Americans? You disgust me and I wish you all would move to Europe.

Your "reporting" on this story is as inaccurate as the NY TImes. Beck reported on Jones' radical background TWICE (first time was in late July) before Jones' group ever began trying to get advertisers to boycott him. Which sounds like Jones was going after HIM and lost. Tough. Jones was hoisted on his own idiotic YouTube petard. With his own radical idiotic words. This is the kind of inanity you get when non-vetted "czars" are appointed with no congressional oversight.

Mark, you did cover Jones in the Swamp, but usually as part of an assault on Glenn Beck and those items were pretty favorable to Jones too. But what about the Chicago Tribune newspaper? Or the Website (not the Swamp part of it)?
Anyway, I still don't see where just because Sarah Palin endorsed Beck's show that that puts her as one of Jones' critics, though she probably is and correctly so.
Also, didn't Dems target Bush people? What about Libby, who never outed Ms. Plame? Ashcroft? Rumsfeld? Gonzalez?
Getting back to Palin. So, it apparently is that she won on the Jones front and the Death Panel front? Does that mean Ms. Sarah is quite powerful that she is able to defeat Obama on two fronts so far? I guess she is more formidable than I ever thought!

Anyone who still thinks the Bush administration had nothing to do with 9/11 is either deliberately enabling the fascist state it created or is completely uninformed about the facts. For those who are simply ignorant let me suggest www.ae911truth.org so you can see for yourself that WTC's 1,2' and 7 were deliberately demolished. For those who are defending the US' fascist descent which continues to rely on the mass-deception of the Official Conspiracy Theory, shame on you.

I expected the wheels to fall off the Obama train but not this quickly or in this way. It is not Beck, O'Reilly or Palin doing him in, but his friends and congressional colleagues. It is almost as if someone put him up as a "straw man" president, selected for his eloquence and color, while the agenda is determined by appointees and the Democratic leadership in Congress. He will be a lame duck after the 2010 elections and the country will be at a stalemate because he has been "used" as a mere speechmaker.

I find it reprehensible that an advisor selected by the president has been coerced into resigning for critical statements he has made about Republicans when a lunatic (actually more than one) has been allowed free reign on fixed News to spew his unpatriotic (some might say treasonous) vitriol (which is completely untrue) about a legally (& overwhelmingly) elected president of the US. Why is it the Dems just cave in whenever the crazy right wingers spew forth their lies & hatred? At least call it for what it so obviously is - racism. Van Jones is less of a left wing extremist thatn Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh is a right wing extremist - not to mention any number of psycho nut jobs amongst the republican house members (Virginia Fox & Michele Bachmann just 2 examples.) Where are the apoligies from Republicans for calling the President & other elected Democratic leaders unpatriotic or disseminating lies about the healthcare bill (like death panels)?

Want to know a man? Know his friends. Many love Barack because of his smile, flowery speeches, etc., but the truth of the matter is that he's a scary individual with scary friends. Every time he gets questioned on anything, his answer is to blame Bush and poke fun at the questioners...try to make them look ridiculous. This is the scariest time in U.S. history since I've been alive. If we let this guy do what he wants, we will seriously regret it later.

Personally, I think it's great Van Jones resigned, but I doubt it will matter much AND I doubt the real reasons will be reported.
I simply do not care that he called Repubs "assholes", or that he does satiric imitations of George Bush or others, or that he is a truther. My main beef with this guy is that he favors one race over others (blacks) when it comes to giving jobs to people AND that he or anyone in government is actually choosing the winners in the green game. Why don't we just let the market handle such decisions. We pay taxes so that some president can choose a "czar" who will then dole out jobs to favored supporters? THAT IS JUST UN-AMERICAN. We're missing the point here - why does the president even have such power/czars?

Valerie Jarrett vouched for Van Jones and was delighted she could recruit the KOOK!
She was instrumental in creating the "distraction"!
Should she be the next to "resign"?
Van Jones, The Green Jobs adviser, was the second adviser/czar to "resign"..
The first was Steven Rattner, The Car Czar, on July 14 because of SEC investigation
revelations.
Then there was thePresident's Military Attache who "resigned" because he took the hit for the
Airforce One NYC Flyover.
Lacking at the White House are experience, qualifications, competence and judgment.

To be honest, this is the first I became aware that Van Jones was working for the White House. I think he would have done a tremendous job as counsel to the President on the environment. Anyone who read his book would plainly understand that Van Jones was passionately and eloquently searching for solutions to our environmental and economic problems. This is really the country's loss here.

Interesting spin in the story. Mark Silva writes that Glenn Beck went after Van after his organization, Color of Change went after Beck's sponsors. As it turns out, Beck did two reports on Jones prior to the start of Color of Change’s attacks on Beck.

Silva referring to this as a "media power play" is pathetic. Suggesting that one unemployed blogger from Alaska along with Glenn Beck can overwhelm the mainstream medias refusal to push the story is ridiculous. No one cares about his profanity laced insult of republican senators, no one cares about him calling Bush a crackhead, no one cares about whether he is or isn't a communist. Van Jones was fired because he signed onto a petition demanding several investigations into collaboration of the Bush administration with the worst massacre of Americana ever committed on American soil. That's beyond radical extremism, it's psychotic paranoia. From the moment the story broke of his 911 truth association his days were numbered. Regardless of who screamed for his resignation or how loud they screamed. Attempting to pin his firing on one group or even the republican party is either willful ignorance or cynicism.

A truther, who thinks the Twin Towers were deliberately demolished!
Tom h, Jones didn't resign because he called Republicans, "assholes," he was made to resign because he is a truther, because he doesn't like white people, apparently, because he has been outed as a self-described communist.
Tom, do you know what a communist of socialist is?
Tom, this country was created as a democracy, a country in which the people ran it, the politicians answered to the people and the government was to be small. The government was to not be involved in business, not to be in the car business, the health business, the bank business. When you have government large, intrusive, taking over businesses and indusrtries, then you have socialism.
Anyway, the U.S. did not attack itself on 9/11. The buildings were demolished by us, but by two airplanes loaded with jet fuel that crashed into them at high speeds, causing massive holes and massive infrastructure failure that the fire only weakened to where the structures could no longer support themselves.
I remember a few years ago, one Loony Lefty here even stated several times that airplanes did not fly into the buildings, that it was all special effects, that our eyes were deceived.
And Van Jones had to go because he is an extremist, he is a radical. I know he's the kind of guy the Left likes, but this is a center to center/right nation. Lefties, especally Loony Lefties are not the nation's cup of tea.

It's understandable why the lunatic-liberals are ignorant because the MSM purposely keeps it that way.
Ohhhh, but Jones is a good environmentalist--yeah, kind of like the way the KKK advocated for better public schools, expanding road construction, and other 'progressive' measures.

Something happened... H.R. 1388 was passed yesterday, behind our
backs. You may want to read about it.. It wasn ' t mentioned on the
news... just went by on the ticker tape at the bottom of the CNN
screen.
Obama funds $20M in tax payer dollars to immigrate Hamas Refugees to
the USA . This is the news that didn ' t make the headlines...
By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure
of $20.3 million in "migration assistance" to the Palestinian refugees
and "conflict victims" in Gaza .
Here is fact check:To start, the claim that H.R. 1388 was passed "behind our backs" is false, and the bill had nothing to do with Palestinian refugees in any case.
And these are the poeple outraged over being called Aholes. If the shoe fits!

Wow. After reading some of these comments, I'm sitting here shaking my head, wondering if I live on the same PLANET, let alone in the same country, as some of you people. For starters, please enlighten me and tell me what your source is that shows Mr. Jones proclaiming himself to be a Communist!
One of you mentioned Utube. When I typed in "Van Jones self-proclaimed communist" into UTube's search bar, I got 12 results--all of which are Glen Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and, interestingly, several Rush Beck videos! (See http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Van+Jones+self-proclaimed+communist&search_type=&aq=f)
Nobody knows how to do a smear job like those good ol' boys, right?!
And what's this nonsense about President Obama getting to appoint more people without congressional oversight than any other president in the history of the U.S.?! With all due respect: Are you people smoking crack? (Or, I hear methamphetamine and heroin are big these days, right Mr. Limbaugh? Oh, that's right, you're just a pill-popping alcoholic! My bad.)
Sorry to say, you crazy kids, but President Obama doesn't get to appoint any more people to his cabinet than anybody else. Besides, the current president takes his oath seriously to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America; he's not looking to dismantle it, as his predecessor sought to do. In fact, President Obama was a constitutional law professor who graduated, I believe, second in his class from Harvard, as opposed to former President GW Bush, who barely scraped by with a C average from Yale. (Let me know if you want me to source that statement about Cheney/Bush attempting to dismantle the U.S. Constitution. The first document that comes to mind is The Bush Doctrine, penned by Paul Wolfowitz, the guy who was forced to resign his post as head of the World Bank and who worked under then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney during President GHW Bush's tenure (aka Daddy Bush); that secretary of defense guy who was forced to step down during President GW Bush's regime--what was his name, again? Oh yeah, Donald Rumsfeld; and, if I remember correctly, John Bolton, the neo-con President GW Bush appointed to an ambassadorship to the UN, a post he was compelled to resign from less than 2 years later. Bolton, along with then-Sect'y of Defense Cheney, both had a hand in rewriting the original work before it was introduced to Congress as President GW Bush's National Security Strategy, otherwise known as the "preemptive strike" doc.
There are many other examples I could cite, as well. You just let me know. In the meantime, I would like to suggest that you commenters expand your repetoirre a little: Among the thinking public, FOX News has the credibility of a turnip--no offense to turnips. Really, there are a lot more reliable sources of information out there that are a truer reflection of reality than ANYTHING owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Bizlady, you need to do research and also get your head out of your tushy:
You won't find Jones saying he is a communist on youtube, but you will find it in print:
In 2005 Jones gave to an alternative newspaper called East Bay Express. Jones said that he came out of jail after the Rodney King riots and "spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary...I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th," Jones said. "By August, I was a communist."
Also, bizlady, the issue of Obama appointments is not the CABINET, but the nearly 40 CZARS he has appointed within the White House: a pay czar, a car czar, a green jobs czar, etc., etc.
You also need to get away from the loony left blogs. The Bush administration never sought to change the Constitution. Rumsfeld resigned or forced to resign because things weren't going so well in Iraq in 2006. He'd been there for six years anyway, a pretty long tenure for any cabinet person.
John Bolton had to leave the UN because he was never confirmed by the Senate. The Democrats filibustered his nomination, so his appointment to that position could only last for a certain period of time.
Wake up and smell the coffee, bizlady!

There is a book by William L. Shirer, that was published in 1960, called "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".
People should read the first part of the book that was about the rise of Nazism in Germany prior to WW II.
Compare the methods and progroms that they used to come to power with what is happening in the US since the election.
One item that BO said in a speech during election time was that he wanted to form a military type group complete with weapons that the regular army has but answer only to the president. Sounded like the formation of the SA (brown shirts) in Germany.
Read all the various ways that the Nazis used to take over. See how many of their methods are being used now.
Read the book and THINK.

Since some have a hard time operating a search engine and you want Van Jones saying he is a communist well here you go:
"I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th," he said. "By August, I was a communist."
"In 1994, the young activists formed a socialist collective, Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, or STORM, which held study groups on the theories of Marx and Lenin and dreamed of a multiracial socialist utopia."
http://www.eastbayexpress.com/gyrobase/the_new_face_of_environmentalism/Content?oid=290098&showFullText=true
Now do I need to put the link up for STORM's Communist manifesto or can people figure out how to find it?

Lou,
Did you know there are some excellent documentaries about the Third Reich on UToob?
I watched some of them yesterday, after I was taught how to "navigate" there......
Old dogs...
Anyhow, in remembrance of Sept. 1, 1939, and the year my brother spent as a guest of the Third Reich in Stalag Luft III.....
WH Auden wrote a poem about that day, called, appropriately enough,
September 1, 1939.
You know what, Lou?
You can learn something about the health care "debate" by watching the several documentaries on Medicine under the Third Reich....
The co-option, "leadership conferences", eugenics movement, etc., and where all that ultimately led....
For "deniers", footage of autopsies of twins, interviews with survivors of the experiments, etc.
I think Europe went "socialist" in medicine as a recoil from Nazi "medicine".
Here, you right wingers want to say "health care is a privilege, not a right"...
Y'all ought to review Nazi medicine's eugenics practices starting in 1933...
First they decided that the retarded and disabled were not to be accorded the "privilege" of treatment...
In fact, were taking up unnecessary resources from the Volk...
And so it went to the inevitable extension....
And when Europe was re-built, guess what?
Health care became a right.
A human right.

Hey, Lou. You know who I see as the modern day analog to the brownshirts? The tea party crackpots who take loaded weapons to public town hall meetings and exercise their thuggery to shout down anyone they disagree with. And also you, lying about the elected president's effort to encourage voluntarism and community service. In an earlier era, daddy Bush called volunteerism "a thousand points of light." I remember him being mocked by Republicans then. I guess Republicans hate it when people help each other out. On the other hand, I don't recall anyone accusing daddy Bush of being Hitler.

Bob a Lou--
First you suggest Obama is a Nazi.
Then you insinuate he's a Communist.

Have you ever studied 20th Century history?

So make up your mind.
Posted by: ornery | September 7, 2009 10:35 AM
Ornery, there really is no difference between a Nazi and communist. First of all, Nazi is just a name, not really an ideology. It is a national socialistic party, national socialism basically is communism. Just because the Nazis and Russian communists fought doesn't mean they are basically one and the same. Both are totalitarian, both stifle free speech and free markets, both are all about centralized governmental control. Both are brutal and brutalize their people at any time for any reason. If you use the circle as the political spectrum, put lines through the middle up and down and sideways, Nazism and Communism meet all the way at the end of the spectrum. For all practical purposes, they are one and the same.

At times like this, it helps to revisit the past, particularly the SWAMP story about Rep. Lynn Jenkins and the "Great White Hope" scandal (8/27 M. Silva). Lynn, as you may remember, denied having been familiar with the implications of her comment and the movie of the same name despite the fact that the film starring James Earl Jones was once shown IN HER HOMETOWN THEATER in 1970!
Let's review:
First we have the race card, cleverly led out as always, by bill r. in the Van Jones story:
"Who will be the next black man Beck goes after? Don't kid yourselves, this campaign of hate isn't over money, it is to appeal to the lowest common denominator in the republican base."
'
Posted by: bill r. | September 6, 2009 11:25 AM
The Jones story obviously had nothing to do with Comrade Truther Jones' radical ties and statements but everything to do with the fact that he was a Truther black man with radical ties and statements. Clear-cut racism cleverly revealed by investigative blog reader and serial commenter bill r.
Recall Mark Silva defending himself against following bill r.'s example of leading out with the race card in the same story:
"Straight from the wires today, no feed, no dish... and I'm the one playing a race card? Wow."
Posted by: Mark Silva | August 27, 2009 2:56 PM
Swamp Lesson: The race card can be played by libs whenever a person of color is targeted for any reason.
See also MR FACE from the same article about former Klan leader Jenkins:
"Bruce and John, are you saying this was not a racist thing to say? You guys are unbelievable. Can't you admit it when someone in your party says or does something stupid? Or are you blind ideologues...."

No word yet from Mr. Face about Truther Jones, but SWAMP readers are standing by.
Syj, same article, not only exposed Jenkins and defenders for their obvious racism, but also cleverly pointed out deficiencies in her "apology."
"John D, she could NOT possibly have been clueless of what that kind of comment means. Clearly, she intended it, now that there is a man of color in the White House.
And she only gave the standard "IF I offended anyone" non-apology.
She disgraced herself. Can't say she disgraced her party. Not much left to be disgraced."
Posted by: syj | August 27, 2009 3:50 PM
Disgraceful indeed. More on Jenkin's half-hearted apology:
"Any apology that contains the word "if" is not an apology.
"I'm sorry I said it. I was wrong." That's an apology."

Thank you Tom. Tom, it is anticipated, will also weigh in on Jones apology, which bears some peculiar similarities to racist Jenkins. Compare and contrast:
"If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize." - Truther Jones.
if I offended anybody, obviously, I apologize," Jenkins told the Lawrence Journal-World.
Jenkins = obvious racist.
Jones = targeted by the white man.
Finally, why does Jones soft shoe his signing of the 911 petition? Does he really need more evidence that 911 was perpetrated by our own government?
Rosie O'Donnell, leader of the Democrat Party, eloquently exposed the fallacy that fire can melt steel, thereby proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that Republicans brought down the towers in order to steal Iraqi oil by justifying an illegal occupation.
Moreover, when does anyone in government READ anything before they sign it? What a ridiculous expectation.
Thank you for the education on racism, SWAMP, which apparently is a one way street with libs.

John D, do you know anyone who lived through WW II?
Have you ever heard of the Siege of Stalingrad?
You are telling us there is no difference between Nazism and Communism?
Are you currently confined somewhere?
For example, confined in the Ministry of Truth?
Posted by: ornery | September 7, 2009 12:09 PM
Nazism and Communism meet all the way at the end of the spectrum. For all practical purposes, they are one and the same.
Posted by: John D | September 7, 2009 11:35 AM
Ya maybe in your empty head they are one and the same but to most of us educated on 20th century history, we beg to differ. You people disgust me with your comparisons of gas chambers and the ealmost elimination of a people to Obamas policies. You demean the memories of millions of people who were gassed to death by the Nazis! You walk on the graves of those who died for our freedom from this tyrany by comairing Obamas agenda to the Nazis. You spit in the faces of all of those who survived Nazi appression by making comparisons. You people are the ones we shall overcome. Not President Obamas speech to school children to prosper and stay in school!! DISCUSTING MORONS!!!

"There is a book by William L. Shirer...called "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" People should read the first part of the book that was about the rise of Nazism in Germany prior to WW II...Compare the methods and progroms that they used to come to power with what is happening in the US since the election. "
It's always amusing when white Americans invoke the same tired reference to Nazi Germany when the reality is that they idolize Adolph. For decades, white Americans have emulated Nazi salutes at supremacist rallies, sported Third Reich tattoos and proudly collected SS memorabilia. Their affinity for Nazi ideology is certainly no secret and the reason why their disingenuous comparison of Obama to Hitler becomes more laughable by the day.

Scot, I love your "anger" about those using Nazism to describe Obama and his policies. Hmmm, don't recall you getting your undies in a bunch when your ilk repeatedly did so to Bush. Anyway, I have not likened Obama to Hitler. I do believe he is a socialist at heart though.
Ornery, let me give you a little lesson here.
Both Nazism and Communism have killed millions of people, no? In fact, more have been under Communisma than Nazism.
Both Nazism and Communism are totalitarian/authoritarian regimes, no?
Both Nazism and Communism generally outlaw or ban religion, no?
Both don't practice freedom of speech,no?
Under both, the people have little to no freedom, no?
Under both there is a state-run media, no?
Under both, there is no to little private ownership, no?
Just because the Nazis and Communists fought in WWII, doesn't mean much. Communists and Communists have fought too.
You take a circle. The top of the circle is a centrist. To the left of the circle is liberal, leftist. To the right of the circle is a conservative, rightist. But in that circle, Nazism and Communism meet up, opposite ends of the spectrum, but for all practical purposes the same.

How dare critics poke fun at the importance of the Green Jobs Czar? Someone has to collect excess carbon penalties and pay Algore's commissions.
Capntrade is not a tax on those making less than $250K per se, it's just an astronomical increase in fossil fuel prices for the consumer in order to enact a statistically insignificant reduction in atmospheric CO2 which will have no impact on global temperatures.
NY Times:
"Geologists Think the World May be Frozen Up Again." (Feb 1895)
A front page article later "Warns Us of an Encroaching Ice Age." (Oct 1912)
The LA Times weighed in with "Human race will have to fight for its existence against cold." (Oct 1912)
In the 1930's, the media, of course, switched to Global Warming.
NY Times: "America in Longest Warm Spell Since 1776." (March 1933)
How about the Chicago Tribune: "Scientist Says Arctic Ice Will Wipe Out Canada." (August 1923)
Fast forward to 1974: NY Times again; this time, Global Cooling.
"the facts of the present climate change are such that the most optimistic experts would assign near certainty to major crop failures in a decade." If government did not respond to the coming catastrophe, according to the article, "mass deaths by starvation and probably anarchy and violence would result." (December 1974).
The science is settled. Celebrities say it is so.

Dear John D,
The common view of political and economic systems holds that the various types of governments are best understood by placing them on a continuous, horizontal line with one end being the opposite of the other. This "political spectrum" is usually arranged from the "Far Right" to the "Far Left." Anchoring the "Far Right" is Nazism as it was practiced by Hitler's Germany. Next comes Fascism and other kinds of totalitarian regimes of lessening severity. Many of the military governments of South America as well as true monarchies could be classified as examples of this region of the spectrum. Democracies and capitalist countries such as the United States are placed somewhere in the middle. Moving farther to the Left, there are semi-socialist and fully socialist countries. Nations such as Sweden would fit in this region. Anchoring the Far Left end of the political spectrum are communist countries, the best representative of which has been the Soviet Union.
Since Bush was a Conservative on the far right that pretty much answers your question now doesnt it!
Posted by: Albert Lauzon. Atlanta, GA | September 7, 2009 7:41 PM
Albert, the straight line does not quite tell the whole story. The circle does. This is from a "moderate" so it has his biases in there, but it does pretty much get it right:
http://www.thoughtsaloud.com/essays/the-political-spectrum/
And this site does a good job of explaining it all (look for the header, The Political Spectrum, and then read the WHOLE commentary:
http://www.campaignforliberty.com/blog.php?view=4064
Ummm, and Bush was NOT far right, if anything he was moderate conservative. And, no Albert, Bush was not even close to being a Nazi. More worthless thinking from worthless people: the far left.
Posted by: John D | September 7, 2009 10:23 PM
Lauzon,
That would be "the common view", but ask yourself this - would a Nazi regime best reprsent a command and control centralized gov't or a decntralized gov't that appreciates individual liberties. Although your application of "the common view" would put American Conservatism closer to Nazism than American Liberalism, you could be no further from the truth. Liberalism centralized the control of individual lives while Conservatism allows for individuals to control their own lives.

"Beck is a complete nutjob."
Did someone change the definition of "nutjob" when I wasn't looking? Beck was guilty only of calling attention to what Van Jones was saying ABOUT HIMSELF, in his OWN WORDS. Jones was a self-described communist revolutionary. How does letting the public know about that make Beck a nutjob?

Czar Watch: Van Jones, John Holdren, Cass Sunstein
With President Obama surrounding himself with at least 32 czars, (at last count), those public servants immune from public and congressional scrutiny, he has set a new record.
In actuality, these czars who revel in an absolutist authority and power are not public servants as much as they are dedicated Obama servants answerable only to their master.
As Obama might say, Allah only knows how much they are costing the taxpayers of our cash-strapped nation!
The most recent czar in the news, a sputtered, dethroned czar, Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Van Jones, recently resigned in the middle of the night.
The timing of that “green czar’s” departure was fitting considering that this neo-conservationist’s brief tenure in that lofty position was as clandestine as was his background in such roles as racial agitator, admitted Communist, and 9/11 conspiratorialist.
Jones was toppled not because of those items on his resume’ but only because he shot his mouth off when stuck for something to say when he had no clue what to say.
He reverted to form and called all Republicans a**holes which got some of those a**holes to delve into his record: http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=1205.
So, Jonesy is gone, but not really. He’s still on the government payroll, advising the president, just absent his title.
Remember, when you get rid of a roach you can be certain that many more roaches are hidden away and will re-emerge when darkness falls. Some squished roaches, (think Van Jones), are even capable of phoenix-like revivification.
Yet-to-be-squished-czar-vermin include John P. Holdren and Cass Sunstein.
Holdren, Director of Obama’s White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, also holds the unofficial title of the Josef Mengele of Obama’s staff. . . .

You're all a bunch of nutjobs thats all I have to say!!
Bush had 34 Czars of which not all of them were approved by Congress how convienent of you to forget that!!!
Josef Mengele killed innocent people how does that even compare to Obama????
Sad as it might be, I'm certain its just a matter of time before one of you nut jobs take your 2nd amendment right a bit too far!!!
And since when -by the way- has being a communist illegal in our democratic democracy????
