Boehner to Obama: 'Where are the jobs?': The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

The government's monthly report on unemployment will arrive tomorrow morning, Washington time. President Barack Obama will arrive in Denmark to press Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic summer games in the morning, Copenhagen time.

The president could be bringing good news for the United States home with him. But back home, the news may not be so good -- with a 10 percent threshhold for unemployment looming, perhaps, in this week's, if not next month's, report from the Department of Labor.

"While the president is in Copenhagen tomorrow,'' House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said today, "the American people are going to wake up and find out that hundreds of thousands more Americans have lost their jobs.

"The administration's trillion dollar stimulus plan clearly is not working. Americans were promised that this plan would create jobs immediately and keep the unemployment rate below eight percent. But Americans are asking, where are the jobs?''

Asked about Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's suggestion today that the recession is likely over, Boehner, at his weekly news conference, said: "Well, I would like -- hope that the recession is over. But we have to realize that unemployment is hovering around 10 percent. We're still losing jobs in America.''

Bernanke also testified that unemployment may well still be 9 percent or greater late next year.

Asked about Obama going to Copenhagen, "only for day'' and "what's wrong with him doing thatt -- because won't all Americans benefit if Chicago gets the Olympics?'' Boehner said: "wo weeks ago, the president said himself that he would not be going to Copenhagen because he had other priorities that were more important. ''

Everyone knows that employmnet is a lagging indicator so you can blame the unemployment rate squarely on Bush. Obama's responsiblity won't start until 2010.

Spray-On Tan Boehner is the biggest crybaby I've ever seen.

So let me get this right - the Republicans (Boehner) are opposed to the president of the united states making a personal pitch to bring an economic infusion to the u.s.? Really? Hosting the Olympics would create jobs and increase tourism to the u.s. which will also create jobs.

Oh yeah and how about a bit of national pride and unity? The Olympics is meant to be about sports not politics, its a time when as a nation we rally behind together in support of America's team.

The criticism from the GOP is an obvious one - if he weren't going they'd criticize him for not doing more to make it happen.

So what was with that whole "pass this stimulus package now to avoid +8% unemployment?" line..?

The GOPer's must be truly desperate to criticize the President for a one-day dash to Copenhagen to make a pitch to bring the most prestigious sports event in the world to the United States.

Jobs, tourism, positive publicity around the globe: Where’s the downside to hosting the Olympic games? Both British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French leader Jacques Chirac flew to Singapore to try to attract 2012 games to their respective countries. Blair charmed the committee. Chirac could barely contain his arrogance. France, which was the clear front runner heading into the competition, lost to Great Britain.

President Obama is not going on vacation, he’s going to engage the United States in the global community and attempt to bring home a prize that offers major benefits to all Americans.

Alexa, The downside of the Olympics is for the people of Illinois that will be stuck with the bill from the corruption, cost overruns, political patronage and insider deals. If this is a net positive for the country then the country should take the risk should this fail to produce the benefits the liar in chief is expousing. Remember this is from the same liar that rammed through his bill to bail out the corrupt state politicians so unemployment wouldn't go above 8%. These pronouncements of the glory of the games are from the same liar whose deficit estimate was off by $2 Trillion less than two months after announcing the deficit.

Too busy to meet with his generals to develop a strategy in Afghanistan but not too busy to support a corrupt dem machine. Our troops are dying in Afghanistan in record numbers and your messiah is busy wining and dining and playing rock star.

You'd think the Repug Party would get tired of this kind of crap. It's as if they have a team of "whine, cry, grouse and nag specialists" working non-stop somewhere in the bowels of the RNC, thinking up this kind of garbage.

Instead of a "message of the day", they have a "whine of the day", delivered with such fake outrage, pomposity and false gravity that it sounds like they really believe their own BS - because no one else does. After Boehner's latest whine about Pres Obama gets circulated about for 24 hours in the Republican noise machine, with Rush and company getting all red faced and hyperventilating and others becoming near hysterical, warning about "threats to security", (Glenn Beck) etc, I think they actually start to believe their own lies.

The waste of time is not Pres Obama flying to Denmark, it's this non-stop Republican nonsense that we're "treated" to every day.

So what was with that whole "pass this stimulus package now to avoid +8% unemployment?" line..?

You're right, PrePuke.

Pres Obama should not have made an unemployment prediction. Considering how bad Bushco tanked our economy, no one could rightly predict how bad things would get before they started turning around.

Earlier this month, the reliably Republican Wall Street Journal agreed the Obama administration has helped stem the bleeding from the Bush Recession:

"Many forecasters say stimulus spending is adding two to three percentage points to economic growth in the second and third quarters, when measured at an annual rate. The impact in the second quarter, calculated by analyzing how the extra funds flowing into the economy boost consumption, investment and spending, helped slow the rate of decline and will lay the groundwork for positive growth in the third quarter -- something that seemed almost implausible just a few months ago. Some economists say the 1% contraction in the second quarter would have been far worse, possibly as much as 3.2%, if not for the stimulus.

For the third quarter, economists at Goldman Sachs & Co. predict the U.S. economy will grow by 3.3%. "Without that extra stimulus, we would be somewhere around zero," said Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist for Goldman."

I'm sure you were one of the "great Americans" defending Bush and his lengthy "stay the course" strategy, so after 8 years of Iraq and Afghanistan and the inept handling from the last administration, you certainly have no room to talk. Iraq was a distraction and a disaster, and you own it.

"Hans",

Our troops were dying in Iraq and Afghanistan and our economy was on the verge of collapse when your Messiah and Rock Star Hero, Shrub Jr, went to the China Olympics for four days - as a SPECTATOR.

And quit crying about Illinois politics and trying to blame them all on Obama, and not only that, you're trying to blame Obama and Illinois for things that haven't happened yet anywhere other than your head.. Your "dirty IL/Obama dirty politics" schtick is getting old.

What the Hell? Hey, Boenher, what in the hell do you mean "where are the jobs"? You and your Republican friends took this country down, when you had control for eight years, without regulation in the financial sector. Between wall street and the health care industry, there isn't anything left for main street. Remember the republicans never do anything for this country, they only do things to this country! whiteagle38

"The administration's trillion dollar stimulus plan clearly is not working.... Americans are asking, where are the jobs?''

No, Americans are asking why the GOP remains bereft of solutions. Not a day goes by when Orangutan Orange Boehner isn't positioned in front of a camera whining about all that's wrong with the country when he and his shiftless crew had eight years to produce something viable for America and failed to do so. Perhaps he should spend less time trying to artificially brown his skin and more time being an effective leader with solid ideas.

Well that didn't take long before the "Bush did it" response gets regurgitated...
I can agree with you on one thing- that Obama should not have predicted the unemployment impacts – Having said that this does not excuse what is likely a fact that without this dire warning he may not have been able to get the stimulus passed... even if congress had read it before voting on it.
If you can squeeze it in, this is a link to a few economists view of how well the stimulus is/will perform...

I thought Obama was an improvement? A welcome change... The "Yes We Can"guy ----

Are you really putting Obama on a par with Bush?

PrePuke,
I know how embarrassed you Wingnutters are of Shrub Jr and Darth and how much you want to erase that memory. But out here in the real world it has only been 9 months since they left office and we're still going to be cleaning up the ungodly mess that they made of this country 30-40 years from now - deal with it.

The National Journal? Ha Ha Ha! What's wrong wasn't the Wall (Murdoch) Street Journal Wingnutty enough for you? I know how much you hate a America when Republicans aren't in charge but unfortunately for you, the stimulus IS working.

John Boehner is the most petty, superficial, hypocritical, and impotent legislator in the Senate. It's embarrassing how ridiculous Boehner sounds when he complains about bringing the Olympics back to the U.S.! I'd say it's downright un-American, and John Boehner is as phoney as his tan.

First, he surrendered GOP leadership to Limbaugh and Beck to avoid getting his hands dirty. Then Boehner led the fight for a return to "fiscal conservatism" after the Bush administration had left behind a deficit increased by 50%, trillions in debt, a ruined economy, Guantanamo, a shameful legacy of torture and rendition, and two quagmires in the Middle East. Then, Boehner led conservatives to drag their heels, stonewall, teabag, and refuse to work with the new administration. Politically, it's much safer to sit back and say NO. He proudly waits and wishes for Obama to fail.

Offering nothing but NO, the crybaby continually whines about a "lack of bipartisanship." In one breath he complains that Obama is doing too much, too fast, and too soon, not focusing on our problems, and in the next breath, he complains that Obama is too slow, too timid, an APPEASER who uses smart diplomacy instead of an immediate military response.

Boehner may be able to fool the low information base, but to the thinking person he is just a phoney, a drama queen, making a ridiculous fool of himself.

What has John Boehner done to improve unemployment in Ohio? Nothing. Republicans are swirling in a vacuum of leadership, and John Boehner is the lead SUCK.

Nice try MJ, right or wrong at least Bush made a decision. He didn't run away and avoid it like the fool we have now. And if it was wrong for Bush to pal around with the Chinese, how is it any better that bambi wines and dines some IOC elites? You don't have a very strong point.

I didn't blame Il corruption on bambi, I blame Il corruption for bambi. As for blaming this state for things that haven't happened yet, try reading a newspaper about the number of convicted aldermen, city workers, Daley insiders, bambi fundraisers etc. If you don't think there are already insiders with options on fleecing the taxpayers, you are a bigger fool than the guy currently in the white house.

Excellent question. Where are the 4 millions jobs you promised?. Or was
5 million, it seems to change every time you appear on television. One other thing please explain how you determine"jobs saved".

You're right Hans,
Shrub Jr made the "hard" decision to cut and run from America's collapsing economy and two wars and run off to China for four days of getting drunk as a skunk on the taxpayers dime.

Mission Accomplished!

Why the sudden concern, Boner? Worried that your constituents MIGHT NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE?

By the way Carol A, I appreciate the sentiment, but Boner's in the House of Representatives, not the Senate.

When are you people going to stop blaming Bush and the Republicans? You won. He's gone. The Democrats are completely and wholely in charge. The only problem is Democrats never take responsibility for their actions. It always boils down to "well we had good intentions". The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Grow Democrats and take responsibility for your actions and maybe you will earn some respect.

Rick, son, you remember W was a drunk driver, right?

Just think of him, from 01-09, as a drunk driver who kept running over the American people.

Lots of broken legs, hips, vertebrae, etc. etc.

Rehab from the wrecks W caused takes a long, long time.

Mr. Boehner, I am an American. A very good American that has done everything by the book and I WANT THE PUBLIC OPTION ADDED TO HEALTH CARE.

DID YOU READ IT? DID YOU GET IT? NOW YOU HAVE HEARD FROM AN AMERICAN THAT DOES WANT THE “PUBLIC OPTION” IN HEALTH CARE.

I hope that you no longer lie about NOT hearing from any Americans that want the “public option”.

For a family of 4, we are paying $20,400 for medical insurance with a $5,000 deduction. WE NEED THE PUBLIC OPTION!! How can we possibly save money for our retirement when the health insurance company is getting just about everything that is left over. So we will be putting a much bigger burden on the welfare system when we reach the age that we can no longer provide payments to your benefactors: insurance companies.

Did you know that the drug and insurance industry is spending $1.4 million PER DAY to lobby you and other members of Congress? Guess who is “really” paying for those lobbyist, your constituents!

Did you know or do you even care that 18,000 people die every year because of a lack of health insurance?

Was it the insurance and/or drug lobby that is paying for your golf at the Greenbrier?

Are you signed up for the $503 ANNUAL payment for primary care at the clinic in Congress? No wonder you don’t care about your constituents! Or are you just so out of touch with your constituents?

Speaking “out of touch”, I remember back during the Bush II era, you made a statement to the media that “Rumsfeld was the best thing that ever happened to the Pentagon”; then in less than two weeks, he was fired or removed from office.

Unfortunately, those pundits who are claiming Obama is a racist are right. Exactly right.

He spent 20 plus years in the church of one of the biggest white haters in the country today, and the way his congregants clapped and cheered everytime he unjustly denigrated white Americans reveals Obama's other friends are just as bad as their pastor.

Whether it's Louis Farrakhan, Van Jones or Mark Lloyd, Obama's circle of friends tells us all we need to know about him.

He spent years and years concentrating SOLELY on promoting black people any way possible, by hook or crook, as a community organizer. Should we expect him to now be all caring and all loving to all people of the US?

He's pro-black; he dislikes this country, and the white culture, and it will be his downfall, because more of us are beginning to see his racial leanings very clearly. His unjust defense of Professor Gates and unjust racially charged condemnation of a white cop lifted another curtain to allow us to see what this man really thinks.

John Voight said he thinks Obama is leading us to civil war. Black professor Carol Swain wrote that the races are more divided than ever since Obama was elected and that she thinks racial conflict will be the outcome of it all.

Both of them are 100% correct. Only the Kool Aid drinkers can't see that.

I can see that "swamp politics" is nothing more than the loony left-wing fever swamp of Bush Derangement Syndrome. This is the Democrats' economy, military, etc. Everything bad that happens during Obama's admin is the responsibility of Obama and the Democrats. Obama promised 8% unemployment after the Porkulus. Another of his countless lies. The economy didn't start falling until the Democrats took over Congress in 2006.

It is intellectually dishonest to suggest that Big O is responsible for job losses. We all know it was the corruption of government and business that caused the economic impact that resulting in job losses.
Big O is responsible for a failed 'stimulus' plan that promised to ".. create or save 4 million jobs .." and hasn't even slowed job losses.
To break even in job creation 125,000 jobs have to be created each month (government's own numbers). We are 300,000+ short of that.
To say that record numbers of unemployed have to wait a year before they 'may' get a job isn't stimulus, it's failure to stimulate. Period.
The reason the stimulus plan has failed is because it is a cronyism payback scheme, not a jobs creation plan.

That's brilliant!!! Blame everything on Bush! Yes he has some answering to do but if you think hiding your head ion a hole and thinking this presidents mistakes are someone elses fault then you should go someplace where you can live under the the kind of unconstitutional socialism he's pushing...you deserve each other. Just for once I'd like to see just one lefty take personal responsibility for ANYTHING that goes wrong on their watch.

i want to know what is up with the first family taking all these vacations. not only the waste of fuel, but also the cost for protection. when he was running for potus he should of realize he was expected to stay in dc and get down to business. i see him traveling, playing basketball and drinking in the white house garden. and leaving the real issues he campaign for in the hands of the senate and the house. meanwhile he is planning what site he wants to visit at the expense of the taxpayers.

So, let me get this straight: the Republicans are opposed to another infusion of debt to our already struggling economy, and this recession is all Bush's fault? First, hosting the Olympics has been a financial boondoggle for every country that's hosted it. China lost at least a billion dollars, Australia lost money, Italy lost money, Greece lost money, need I go on? Second, Bush tried to correct it right after the Democrats took over Congress in '06 by reigning in the spendthrift policies set forth by Clinton Administration, Harry Reid, Barney Frank et. al. and they pitched a fit, claiming it was wrong to deny someone a home loan just because they had no way of paying it back.

It's a well-known concept that if nothing is done at the start of a recession, it will correct itself in about 6 months. Don't complain to me; look it up for yourselves. There were many recessions and depressions in the 19th century, many of them much worse than the Depression of the '30s, and the government did nothing, and they corrected themselves within a year. Obama got everything he wanted in his first 100 days of office, and the economy has gotten worse. This economy is all his now.

Remember, America cannot be taxed into prosperity.

You actually currently believe Bush caused the crisis, yet you are unwilling to admit the negative affect of Washington printing trillions of dollars they did not actually earn as profit or even get from taxes?? If CNN said spending what you don't actually have worked I suppose you would believe them??? I am so tired of knowing that every day millions of you are just believing everything you are told in public schools and on liberal talk shows and news while meanwhile we loose are religious freedoms and income bit by bit. I don't think thats over the top for me to say this. Its just the truth. What kills me is you people think I am gaining I am loosing. Yet your votes continue to impact my life.

hahahahahaha..heheheheh..hahahahahahahahahahaha...hehehehehehehehe...chuckle.....yahooooooooo...hahahahahahahahahaha...hehehehehehehe CNN need a crying towel???hahahahahahaha...hehehehehe......

I wonder just how long it will take, for all you fine folks to realize that they have you all figured out, as long as they keep you at each others throats,by doing the things they have done to this country, they will continue to destroy our NATION ,and you all will be too busy to stop them. So keep it up , they have a little more Left to do.
