Retired general calls Cheney and Bush 'incompetent' war-makers

The Swamp

by Mark Silva and updated

After a lull in fighting between former Vice President Dick Cheney and the Obama White House, the outspoken ex-veep has suited up again with a complaint that President Barack Obama is "dithering'' over war strategy in Afghanistan.

In a "hard-hitting speech'' at the Center for Security Policy last night, Cheney -- who received the center's "Keeper of the Flame'' reward -- complained about the time it is taking the Obama White House to decide about the deployment of tens of thousands of added troops that Gen. Stanley McChrystal is seeking in Afghanistan.

"The White House must stop dithering while America's armed forces are in danger," Cheney said. "Make no mistake, signals of indecision out of Washington hurt our allies and embolden our adversaries."

Obama, in an interview with NBC News yesterday, suggested that a decision could be forthcoming soon, but may not necessarily be announced before the outcome of the Nov. 7 runoff election in Afghanistan, where President Hamid Karzai has agreed to another round of voting in a contest with rival Abdullah Abdullah following an electoral commission's finding that fraud in the recent elections there deprived anyone of a 50 percent majority.

"I think it is entirely possible that we have a strategy formulated before a runoff is determined,'' Obama said. "We may not announce it.''

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs today offered a rebuttal to Cheney's comments: "What Vice President Cheney calls dithering, President Obama calls his solemn responsibility to the men and women in uniform and the American public. I think we've all seen what happens when somebody doesn't take that responsibility serious...

"It is a curious comment," Gibbs said, "given, I think it is pretty safe to say that the vice president was for seven years not focused on Afghanistan. Even more curious given the fact that an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House including the vice president's for more than eight months -- a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

Karl Rove, the chief political adviser for the Bush administration, suggests in a Wall Street Journal essay accusing Obama of going "wobbly'' on Afghanistan that "t\ere is also the heavy whiff of politics in the administration's war deliberations. The president's senior political adviser, David Axelrod, apparently attends war cabinet meetings--something I did not do as President Bush's senior political adviser. ''

As for Cheney, Retired Army Gen. Paul Eaton, who oversaw training of the Iraqi military from 2003-4, had this to say: "The record is clear: Dick Cheney and the Bush administration were incompetent war fighters. They ignored Afghanistan for seven years with a crude approach to counter-insurgency warfare best illustrated by: 1. Deny it. 2. Ignore it. 3. Bomb it.

"While our intelligence agencies called the region the greatest threat to America, the Bush White House under-resourced our military efforts, shifted attention to Iraq, and failed to bring to justice the masterminds of Sept 11,'' said Eaton, national security adviser now for the Washington-based National Security Network.

In his speech, Cheney also was critical of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for asserting that the previous administration had failed to adequately assess conditions in Afghanistan before committing troops there.

"Now they seem to be pulling back and blaming others for their failure to implement the strategy they embraced," Cheney said. "It's time for President Obama to do what it takes to win a war he has repeatedly and rightly called a war of necessity."

Cheney also challenged Obama's reversal of the Bush administration's plan for a missile defense in Eastern Europe, with the Obama White House scrapping plans to station missiles in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic.

The Obama White House maintains that adequate defenses can be staged to guard against a "rogue'' threat from Iran or others in the region, as Bush had framed the mission, without a missile installation that had heightened tensions between the U.S. and Russia.

"President Obama's cancellation of America's agreements with the Polish and Czech governments was a serious blow to the hopes and aspirations of millions of Europeans," Cheney said. "These are faithful friends and NATO allies, and they deserve better... Our friends throughout the world are watching and wondering whether America will abandon them as well."

Eaton was equally pointed today.

"As one deeply invested in the Armed Forces of this country, I am grateful for the senior military commanders assigned to leading this fight and the men and women fighting on the ground,'' he said in a statement issued by his organization.

"But I dismiss men like Cheney who inject partisan politics into the profound deliberations our commander-in-dhief and commanders on the ground are having to develop a cohesive and comprehensive strategy.''

From the Chief Ditherer for the last 8 years, he now chimes in. Go count your Haliburton money. That should keep you occupied until the World Court looks at your involvement in war crimes and torture !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

The Administartation that Cheney was a key member of NEVER gave the military the resources it needed to achieve victory in Afghanistan. The Generals in Afghanistan consistantly said that they did not have the troops the mission required.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/02/mullen-cant-have-more-troops-in-afghanistan-until-i-have-a-reduced-requirement-in-iraq/

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1579576,00.html

The Administration that Cheney was a key part of debated the Iraq troop surge for months. The Iraq Study Group, the Group that the Administration that Cheney was a part of created to craft a new strategy for Iraq, was formed in March of 2006. The administration did not approve the Surge until January of the following year, months after the ISG hand released their report and recommendations. Dick Cheney was an integral part of those months of "dithering".

Those are the FACTS that Dick Cheney has conveniently ignored in order to launch his pathetic partisan attack. Dick Cheney has no credibility or honor. .

Dr. Szell pondered whether he should come out of hiding....

Should he remain in seclusion, live on the money from the diamonds he'd already cashed in?

Or should he risk capture by appearing in public where he might be recognized?

Thank God Bush stayed healthy for 8 years.

But DICK,

Sorry to disappoint you, oh Oom of Doom, but It's hard to bomb them into the Stone Age if they're currently living in the Stone Age.

Aren't you due for a battery check?

Cheney and Bush "dithered" in Afghanistan for eight years while good American men and women died there. Cheney needs to go to his failed Afghan. now and walk around there with a US flag on his chest. He needs to do this without the extended secret service protection that he cried for from Obama--and received. American taxpayers pay for extended SS protection for Cheney so that he can bad mouth the administration now in office--that a majority of American voters elected???? Cheney does this and didn't sufficiently protect American soldiers in the beginning of his "wars". Cheney is always more concerned about his own skin than any living American soldier he threw into any meat grinder "war" that he and Bush created.

It's reported that the secret service is stretched too thin now due to the added threats to Obama as a result of the right-wing hate talk. Time to take Cheney off the taxpayer secret service dole. Cheney should know that it's only GOPer Pugs who have the guns, anyway.

This is so pathetic it's hilarious.

Dick Cheney = ditherer in chief.

Bush admin ignored the soldiers in Afghanistan for years and left a report for the new Prez on their way out. How nice.

And it's "close to the plan they followed" their report obviously wasn't very good. McChrystal said as much when he asked for 40,000 more troops.

McChrystal also said in his report that a thorough review needed to be done, something conveniently ignored by the "MORE TROOPS NOW!!!" crowd who are so quick to accuse the President of "dithering."

Did anyone on Schlox News ask Cheney and co. why they ignored Afghanistan? Nope.

And they wonder why intelligent people don't consider their sorry station news. Sorry, but constantly running ads claiming you are "fair and balanced" does not make it so.

It's good to see Cheney hold obama's feet to the fire on Afghanistan. The "surge" basically won the war in Iraq, so there is the blueprint!Hopefully, obama will read it someday before more troops get killed because of his dithering.
When a great American like V.P. Cheney talks, the community organizer in chief better listen.

Paulo

"The "surge" basically won the war in Iraq, so there is the blueprint!"

It;'s no nlue print for Afghanistan according to General Petraeus!

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/03/13/petraeus-iraq-style-surge-wouldnt-work-afghanistan/

Cheney isn't a "great american", he is a disgrace to evey ideal this nation has ever stood for, and a military incompetent to boot.

Funny that in an item in which Dick Cheney takes the Obimbo administration to task for messing up Afghanistan, he would include criticisms from a former general. I will not discount the feelings of Gen. Eaton and he may even be right on some points.
But these are the facts, which as usual Mark Silva is afraid to address:
1. More than two months ago, Gen. McChrystal put in his request for more troops. So far, no decision has been made and apparently it will be at least two weeks before there is one.
Hence, Cheney is right that Obimbo is dithering.
2. The Bush administration began increasing troop levels in Afghanistan LAST YEAR in response to the growing threat of the Taliban.
3. The U.S. has succeeded in Iraq. Iraq has an increasingly stable government, one elected by the people. It is a country that is becoming normal and friendly and one NOT LED by a killer dictator.
4. Indecision is perceived as a weakness.
5. The Obimbo administration led largely by the Little Ballet Dancer is about as incompetent and unAmerican as anything this country has ever seen. It is more suited to run an inconsequential Third World Thug Dictatorship than it is the leader of the free world.

Another coded message from Cheney to those who are planning on attacking the US and who want to embarass President Obama. If you want to argue this is not the case, tell us why can't Cheney pick up the phone and voice his concerns in private and in public say, "America will never be defeated by a rag tag 3rd World Army. We will murder all those who try to attack!" Instead he slithers out and says, "America has never been weaker. I hope people aren't planning to attack America because it might work. (wink, wink)" He's giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The al-Qaeda/Taliban kind and the homegrown white supremecist kind. Why?

Paulo (aka The Swamps resident fool), Educate yourself, if that's possible. You can start by reading this fine NY Times article on the issues we're facing in Afghanistan. I know that would require of you to leave the comfort zone of hate radio, but you might actually learn something, and in the process make an intelligent comment once in a while.

John D, misrepresents the facts, as usual.

Obama recieved the proposal for more troops in Afghainstan on October 7, 2009.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKN0748661720091007

Unless John D simply made an error in typing and meant to say "more than two weeks ago", rather than "more than two months ago" he is very much in error.

Now it may be that John D is stupid enough to think that General McChrystal reports directly to President Obama. It may be that he is ignorant enough not to understand that Obama had nothing to approve or disapprove until the Joint Chiefs submitted the full proposal, including vital components that General McChrystal cannot decide, such as where the additional troops will be coming from. Or it could also be that he is just a lying, dishonest, unamerican partisan hack. I'll just present the facts, I'll let you decide about John D.

BTW, anyone want to predict how loud John D is going to scream when it is announced that the additional troops are going to be provided by accelerating troop withdrawals from Iraq (the only place they can come from)?

In case you folks missed it...What Cheney is telling the McVeigh types is now has never been a better time to attack the United States. Stay classy, Cheney!

JOHN W,

What you are doing is eluding the disastrous situation Bush left for Obama in Afghanistan (as he did in just about every aspect of government). What the hell did Bush do in Afghanistan for over seven years? Apparently, not a damn thing.

Do you know how many troops Bush had in Afghanistan in early 2008? He had an unbelievably small contingent of 26,000 troops in the whole country.26,000!! At the same time, he had 160,000 troops in Iraq. I don't know if you know this, but Iraq did not attack us. The people who did attack us on 9/11 lived in ... Afghanistan!!

Now, that's past tense of course. The leadership of Al Qaeda now resides in Pakistan. Why? Because that's where Bush let them escape without much effort. Bush - (and Clinton (thats for Terry) both let Osama bin Laden get away, it appeared without trying very much at all. But here's what you can't argue with - Bush did not try at all in Afghanistan. He didn't give a damn. 26,000 troops, are you kidding me? Right now, we're having a debate if 65,000 troops are anywhere near enough or if we need 40,000 more!!

Bush's gross indifference to the war in Afghanistan is being overlooked, understandably because of how badly he mangled the other war he started. But there is an excellent case to be made that Bush screwed up the Afghanistan War more than the Iraq War. It's a hell of a competition. What was the mission of our troops there for all those years? What did they die for?

And I'm sorry to inform yo ubut the war in Iraq is NOT over and has NOT been won! And most analysts estimate our presence in Iraq could well take decades before we see true Demacracy and freedom from terrorists there! You keep overblowing how we won in Iraq and we're not even close!

"The Obimbo administration...is about as incompetent and unAmerican as anything this country has ever seen."

Please. What's unAmerican is a coward like Cheney who sought five deferments to avoid fighting for his country, yet absurdly offers unsolicited military advice on quelling a disaster of his own making. Given the abject failure of his feckless moves on both Iraq and Afghanistan, Cheney is the last person anyone should be taking advice from.

Hey Cheney!

Go crawl back under your rock, you war criminal!
.

Sorry I meant John D not W, my appolgies to Mr W.

I've got news for you, Dick. Afghanistan is lost. It was lost because of your administration (Bush). It was lost because of your incompetence. It was lost because of your lunatic agenda.

Your administration (Bush) allowed Osama bin Laden to get away, when he could have been caught or killed, at the battle of Tora Bora. Dick.

Your administration (Bush) disastrously shifted its focus from those who had attacked us on 9/11 to those who had nothing to do with it. Dick.

Because of that, the Taliban grew stronger both in Afghanistan and in Pakistan, while Al Qaeda also regrouped and grew stronger in both countries. On your watch. Dick.

In fact, both countries ended up having to negotiate with the Taliban. On your watch. Dick.
And then your administration (Bush) began running around blaming our allies for your disaster. Dick.

Everything that is now wrong in Afghanistan is your fault. Dick. That President Obama even has to be worrying about Afghanistan is proof that you didn't do your job. Dick. That 9/11 even happened was due to your administration's (Bush) having been asleep at the wheel. Dick.

President Obama does have to figure out what to do about the Afghanistan disaster he inherited from your administration (Bush). Dick. But he is being deliberate and circumspect. Something you were not. Dick. Something for which the entire world has suffered. Dick.

One tipoff that you're doing the right thing is when Crazy Dick calls you out for it.
God help you when he's supportive.

Scottie,

Glad to see you are finally getting it right that Clinton blew the whole capture of bin Laden. Clinton's mistake was that he didn't put Janet Reno in charge. We all know she doesn't give a hoot about collateral damage.

To the Left-wing nitwit who said, John D., wrong again, or lied again. Well, dumba**, here is a NY Times report from Sept. 20 about McChrystal's report being submitted on Aug. 30:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/21/world/asia/21afghan.html

Hmmm, those dates are long before the inaccurate Oct. 7 dated given by the Loony Lefty Loser.

As usual, John D is RIGHT!

Huh?

Lil Johnny Doughy Pantload,
So the Iraq war is over? Really? Who won?

Take the tinfoil off your forehead and go sleep it off, you ignorant rube. How many times do we have to tell you to stay out of mommies liquor cabinet during the day?

Mustapha Mond and his handlers started this In-Public argument. Darth Vader is not backing down. Prince and Darth did what they could during the transition to bring the novice president-elect up to speed so that the World would not immediately see what a lite weight the new president is. Now, after all of the predictable Leftist backbiting, Mustapha finds himself where liberals always find themselves ~ incapable of making a hard decision that they would ever be willing to stand on. There is nothing new or novel about this. Mustapha is from the Land of Lincoln, but he sure the hell isn’t Lincoln. Whose fault is that.

This is the war that Liberals, pre-November 2008, said needed to be fought. So fight the damn thing. If that is a problem, then surrender and withdraw. You don’t need the approval of Darth or Prince to do that. What’s the problem? If it was up to Harry Reid, the surrender papers would have already been drawn up. Darth is not going to just go fishing in the “Like No Place On Earth State” and allow the defeat-driven Leftists to frame the argument. That fork in the road is already passed. This movee is just getting started.

After the deftly executed botching of Tora Bora by BusCo and subsequent fiasco in Iraq that had nothing to do with 9/11, Terry Niggles is still trying to pin everything on Clinton. Pathetic.

Soory, moron, but you are still wrong. The McChrystal report is NOT a proposal for the troop increase. It is a report about the conditions on the ground in Afghanistan, and his recommendadtions. You see, idiot, General McChrystal, as the commander in Afghanistan , has NO authority over what troops whould be sent to Afghanistan, and what outside resources are available. That can ONLY come from the Joint Chiefs. They need to say what troops will be sent, where they will be sent from, what impact sending those troops will have on other areas, such as Iraq, and what resources our required to ship and support them. Those are all critical components of the proposal, and are equally critical in decision making. That full proposal only came on October 7. It's too bad you are too ignorant to understannd that, and made yourself look like a fool with your attempt to prove me wrong when you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Can anyone prove to me that those 3,000+ souls that died on September 11, 2009 have justice by the capture/death of those devils who perpetrated it?

Bush/Cheney had a 7 year head start in Afghanistan and came away with what?

All I care about is justice for our citizens. Bush /Cheney dropped the ball and contributed another 4,000+ deaths by moving thier aim to a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. (9/11 commission conclusions).

Please show me proof. No names. No insults. Proof or your words and opinions are worthless.

Bush & Cheney can be blamed until the cows come home but what good is that?

The blame game and name calling gets you folks nowhere! What results can come from blaming anyone for this mess of wars? Do you people really think that calling names and pointing fingers is accomplishing anything?

When you grow up, you just might realize that yesterday is GONE - HISTORY and that only today and tomorrow count, if you have a brain that can think past your nose anyway. Not a one of the terrible issues facing Americans today can be solved by calling names and blaming someone else.

You have to be 100% sheeple to think otherwise.

Leadership is lacking and only leadership (minus the campaign rhetoric of promises) will bring us out of these dark times. For Christ's sakes you bunch of ninny's - BUSH IS GONE AND NO LONGER IN CHARGE! President Obama is THE MAN! It's all on his shoulders and the incredible ignorance of his faithful followers with the "Bush Diaper Rash" aren't helping the cause.

To the Moron Loony Lefty, sorry, but the McChrystal report, submitted AUG 30, CALLS for more troops. In fact, just about the entire military apparatus is calling for more troops.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/gen-mcchrystal-calls-troops-afghanistan-secret-assessment-obama/story?id=8630229

Once again, the Absolute Morons on the Left can't read, can't comprehand and are just plain stupid to the hilt. I've provided proof, the dumba**es on the Left do not.

And why am I not surprised the Lefty Censors at the Trib censored me while Dumb Dumb Janet, er John E., or whatever Lefty Loon it is continues to get away with posts that are nothing but crap.

It's you who can't read, moron. I said that the Mcchrystal report calls for more troops. Hiowvere, Mcchrystal can't say were the troops will come from, or what will happen in the those places that will have fewer troops because of increase in Afghanistan (namely Iraq). McChrystal's report is only half the story. Only a moron, would make a life and death decision based on half the story, which I guess you would. Thankfully the President is smarter than you, and has waited for the full proposal, which he recieved on October 7th, that not only included the troop request, but where they would come from, and what the impact would be on those other areas. He didn't make a decision with only half the information. You obviously don't have a fraction of the brain power that it takes to understand this issue. You are just making yourself look dumber everytime you post. Quit while you are behind.

Go! Dick, this guy is a weak President, we have our good military men and women getting wounded and killed all the while this guy in the White House is playing politics as usual. Its a total shame. He may have the title but the suit doesn't fit. Do yourself a favor Nobama and resign while you still have a sliver of respect.

3. The U.S. has succeeded in Iraq. Iraq has an increasingly stable government, one elected by the people. It is a country that is becoming normal and friendly and one NOT LED by a killer dictator.
