Guantanamo closing unlikely in January: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Josh Meyer

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said today that the Obama administration may not meet its own Jan. 22 deadline for closing the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and that the fate of more than 220 foreign terrorism suspects being held there likely will remain up in the air well past January.

"It's going to be difficult for us to make the January 22 deadline," Holder told reporters during a rare and wide-ranging briefing at the Justice Department.

He quickly added that the administration is still trying to meet the goal that President Obama himself set on his second day in office, and that the administration remains committed to shuttering the facility as soon as possible because it has become a rallying cry for terrorist organizations around the world.

Holder also downplayed one controversial sticking point in the Guantanamo debate, saying that the Justice Department and its Bureau of Prisons have proven that they can easily hold the most hardened terrorists without them posing any danger to the community.

His comments came just a few days after the House voted to prohibit the Obama administration from transferring terrorism suspects Guantanamo to face prosecution in the United States, mostly because many lawmakers say the detainees pose a threat to the national security.

The measure, if it becomes law, would significantly complicate the administration's plan to empty the widely criticized military prison by early next year.

Holder also provided new details about the ongoing investigation into Denver airport shuttle driver Najibullah Zazi and his alleged conspiracy with others to detonate home-made bombs somewhere in the United States.

He said that unlike most plots unearthed in the United States in recent years, the alleged conspiracy was not ``aspirational'' but operational, and that potentially scores of Americans could have been killed had it not been disrupted with Zazi's arrest on Sept. 14. Zazi, has been charged with conspiring with others to detonate bombs in the U.S., and his father and a New York Islamic religious leader have been charged with lying to investigators in the case.

Holder also said federal authorities have linked the plot to Al Qaeda, suggesting that Zazi's ties to the terror network based in Pakistan go beyond his merely obtaining training in weapons and explosives at one of its camps there last year.

Holder would not comment on whether any other suspects would be arrested anytime soon, or whether any of the other men who allegedly left New York for Pakistan with Zazi in 2008 also trained at Al Qaeda camps. But he said the FBI and U.S. intelligence agencies are investigating leads and suspects within the United States and around the world and that, "it is our intention to bring all who were involved to justice."

"We have a good sense of who these people were, and I can say the investigation is pretty far along and I think we've got a pretty good handle on who was involved," he said
The disruption of the plot three weeks ago, Holder said, showed that ``the threat posed to the nation by international terror networks is very real.''

Holder also said the disruption of the plot showed how well federal and local law enforcement officials were working together, and with U.S. and foreign intelligence agencies. And he said the disruption of the plot showed how important it is that Congress reauthorize the Patriot Act, which has been criticized by some lawmakers--especially Democrats--for trampling on Americans' civil liberties.

Obama: I don't know all the facts, but this closing Gitmo deal is acting stupidly.

It would be a lot easier to close Gitmo if every time Obama started talking about it the GOPer's didn't start doing what they do best - fearmongering.

Ahhhhh, yes, Johan, it's the Republicans' fault that Obimbo is not living up to his promises. Sorry, but that is just loony, which is par for the course from the Loony Left. Obimbo can't close Gitmo because they don't know what to do with those nasty little terrorists. No or few states want them in their prisons. The U.S. prisons don't want them. Now, if you want them or any other Loon, please contact Eric Holder and let them know you will allow the head-chopping terrorist to live in your home! I actually like that idea because if all the Lefty Loons did that, then there wouldn't be anymore Loony Lefties to worry about and everything in the U.S. will be OK again!

It's nice to see that Republicans have no faith in our correctional institutions ability to keep prisoners in prison. It's also nice to know we have Republicans like Steve King from Iowa, who likes to go on radio shows and pretend he's actually Stephen King and create a nice little fiction that couldn't possibly happen and pawn it off as having merit in an already complex and heated debate. You Wingnut cretins need to get your lies and propaganda straight, otherwise no one will believe you....wait a minute.....nevermind.

I don't care about the deadline for closing Gitmo as long as it's in the works. Gitmo is the Cheney/Bush Padora's Box. The two torturers never did clean up after themselves. It always takes longer to clean up the mess from someone else due to all the fumigation and untangling that's needed.

Ok idiot, you libs have the white house and congress, let all these innocents go. That's what will happen a few years down the road when the ACLU decides that soldiers should mirandize first and shoot later. Some how I don't think your messiah has the balls to make that call. The great communicator hasn't been able to read a convincing speech to get his dem controlled congress allow your innocent terrorists into the US. That's democracy, something this scum should have fought for in their own country, not use against us in ours.

In related news, CNN reported today that the "regulators" at SEC who bungled the Madoff and similar high profile securities fraud cases, are now in the "private sector" with highly paid positions, e.g., at Davis Polk Wardwell or big hedge funds.

Holder hasn't indicted anyone in the meltdown of last year.

So, does that mean no fraud was involved??

Holder did give a speech about race relations, though.

That went over big.

Also, Blagojevich hired him to investigate something or other in Illinois.

Not sure what he discovered.

Another broken promise by BO. I guess all he has done is Jack and Squat. I don't know who those two guys, but he's done them. Maybe Squat is Larry Sinclair's pet name.

Raving Loon, the AMERICAN PEOPLE are not interested in these people on our shores. The PEOPLE want them where they are at. Anyway, the weather is nice there. They get fed well. Even get taken care of. And, they are allowed to pray to Allah five times a day.
KEEP GITMO OPEN. HOUSE LOONY LEFTIES WITH THEM. DO THIS NOW!

This is just a prime example of NObama opening up his trap before
engaging his brain. Stop the madness. keep Gitmo open.

Talk about being dumb Raving Loon?...
When the Senate voted 90-6 against funds to close Gitmo, I think some dems voted for that too, since they have the 60 vote majority.

The disruption of the plot three weeks ago, Holder said, showed that ``the threat posed to the nation by international terror networks is very real.''
No Kidding? Isn't Holder a Democrat??? Yes, he is a very liberal Democrat. And here he is "fearmongering." Or maybe he's just not as stupid as some of the posters here.
Saying you can safely keep Al Queda terrorists in prisons and not have them recruit from the prison population and actually being 100% perfect in executing your boast are two completely different things.
They are not American citizens. They are not legal combatants, THEY ARE TERRORISTS! They hide in civilian clothes, in Mosques, behind women and children. Keep them in Gitmo.

The article says Gitmo is "widely criticized". Which is true.

It's also true that every administration official mentioned in the article, from Barack Obama to Eric Holder, is also "widely criticized."

I Have a Dream: one day we'll see a Swamp article where Obama et al. are labeled "widely criticized."

Obama Dithers, Our Military Withers

With no military experience, no international relations experience, no executive experience, it’s no wonder our naive president is dithering over yet another campaign pledge.

It would be comical if not for the fact that particular reneging is proving deadly to our troops.

It’s not in the same category as the president’s forestalling gay demands that he fulfill his promise to end Clinton’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for the military; Obama knows his queer constituency will hang as tough as they can hang tough until he gets around to revamping that policy.

It’s not in the same category as reneging on his pledge to close GITMO in a year, either; aside from obamaniacs, everyone knew that was impossible and no state and no other country will agree to house any appreciable number of GITMO’s reprobates.

On the other hand, Obama’s stalling on General Stanley McChrystal’s request to provide him with more boots on the ground in Afghanistan to enable him and our forces there to do their jobs amounts to nothing more or less than an execution warrant for our troops.

Obama’s self-declared “war of necessity” as opposed to the Iraqi “war of choice,” is costing America dozens of valiant solders with many more casualties to come as the president weighs his options and consults his advisors.

One such military advisor is bumbling Joe Biden, his VP, the man who has never voiced a thought that wasn’t inane, who would cut and run full speed in retreat and screw the consequences.

Precisely who Obama’s other advisors are is unclear. Could one be Bill Ayers? That old buddy and unrepentent domestic terrorist hasn’t yet graced Obama’s White House, at least through the front door.

Or maybe his former spiritual advisor, Rev. Jeremiah “God Damn America” Wright is unavailable for comment and Obama needs his guidance?

To be generous, perhaps the president is wary of introducing more troops in fear that it will be called a “surge.” That tactic was employed by Bush to help accomplish the Iraq mission and was promptly condemned by Sen. Harry Reid before it was even implemented.

It infuriated the Left with prospects of the “V-word,” as in victory. That same Left would get their knickers in a wad again if it looks like we could win the Afghan war as well.

McChrystal isn’t playing games with Afghanistan. He knows that every day Obama dithers on sending more troops means more and more troops will die: “Eight American soldiers were killed last Saturday when tribal militia stormed two combat outposts in eastern Afghanistan, the worst U.S. loss in more than a year,” http://bit.ly/10NKCh.

Defense Secretary Gates is fully on board with the idea of more troops but will a president whose only combat experience was serving as a community organizer on the mean streets of Chicago listen to Gates or to his generals?

Fully cognizant of Gen. MacArthur’s remonstrance that, “There is no substitute for victory,” McChrystal . . .

Mot of the detanees havent even been accused of a crime yet. Most of them are not even supposed to be there. But most of them will most certainly harbor anger and discust and revenge towards the US for being incarcerated without being charged. Thanks to the Loony wingnuts who put them there!

Well what do you expect from a do nothing, empty suited president and his absolute do nothing doofus cabinet. All they know how to do is "wing it", on a daily basis, and a lousy job at doing it I might add. Let's face it, Eric Holder is the stupidest AG ever in the history of the U.S. Oh yeah, and so is the president...

Some people dream that racism will end, others dream that science will cure all disease, still others dream that fossil fuels will be a relic of the past and replaced with renewable energy. This Republican cretin dreams that America's President will be unpopular. Such high aspirations. Such a "Country First" attitude. What more could you expect from a dirtbag Republican? Republicans, trying their hardest to make America fail.

Well, Democrooks are idiot's. Do you have access to a brain? If so, please insert in the empty cavity above your eyebrows for a minute.

There, now maybe we can get you to understand some small but important facts about this issue.

Question: What has our president stated about those prisoners, their confinement, rationale for confinement, continued confinement? I know that brain is not yours but please try your hardest to use it anyway.

Answer: He will determine who will be let free and who will continue to be kept locked up. Kind of like his answer to "torture", I'll be the decider on who gets tortured and how.

How many have been released? ZERO? I'm sorry, what was your response again?

Wingnut? to the right is tight and to the left is lose. You should do the tighten up there Democrook. In the meantime, follow your leader into stupidity with your remarks.

You’re right, Scot. Most of the detainees haven’t been accused of a crime yet. What’s more, most of them never will be accused of a crime. Being a hostile combatant is not a crime. Only those suspected of committing some “war crime” will be charged with a crime, if at all. The latter represent a small percentage of those still held at Guantanamo. The problem for those who are subject to criminal prosecution is that a long time has passed without accusation, which will undoubtedly make it harder for some of them to have a fair trial.
.
Your observation merely underscores the confusion people have with regard to why the detainees are at Guantanamo at all. Most of them are being held there as what we used to call “Prisoners Of War.” International law, and the Geneva Conventions in particular, permits countries to detain enemy combatants (or POW’s if you prefer) for the duration of hostilities even when they are not subject to being charged with a crime. Thus, the lack of a criminal accusation is quite irrelevant to the validity of their detention.
.
I also agree with you that most of those detained at Guantanamo will “certainly harbor anger and disgust and revenge towards the US …” Then again, it is precisely their anger, disgust and need for revenge that put them on a battlefield fighting with hostile forces against the U.S. Many of those we have released have, in fact, taken up arms and returned to the battlefield against us. Some of them have been killed. The question is, then, whether the existence of that hostility is a good reason to detain them further or to set them free. It’s kind of like what Thomas Jefferson said about having a wolf by the ears: You don’t want to hang on but you dare not let go.

Geographically Stupid Little Johnnie D: I've challenged you in the past to POST PROOF that there are "head-chopping terrorists" in Guantanamo Bay, as you say, because the US Department of Justice hasn't found any yet. What evidence do you have that the DoJ doesn't have?

John W, are you unaware that many of the Gitmo detaineeas were niot found on the battlefield fighting against the US? Many were turned in by others to claim a reward, with little or no evidence that they had ever had nay connection to the fighting, in places like Pakistan, where fighting was not ongoing. other examples of individuals held there that do were not in any way combatents include the 22 Uyghurs who were captured when they fled US bombing in Afghanistan. There is no evidence that they ever took up arms against the US. The US government has acknowledged that they were NOT enemy combatents, yet they continued to be held. Why were they in Afghanistan, you may ask? They were there because they were there to train to oppose the brutal oppression that the Uyghur people recieve in the People's Republic of China. We're doing the Communist Chinese's dirty work for them. Thankfully , since Obama came to office, those that were still in custody are in the process of being released to countries that will grant them asylum. I'm sure that probably upsets you, and I'm sure yopu will remain sure that everyone in Gitmo is an evil terrorist, because the Bush Administration said they were all evil terrorists, no matter what the facts are. There are all too many Americans like you who suimply are not willing to examine the "truths: theat their government tells them, especially when it comes to terrorism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyghur_detainees_in_Guantanamo

I'm sure this link is wasted on you, and thet you will stay firm in your belief that every single person held at Gitmo was an enemy combatant captured on the battlefield.

I just can't get beyond the fact that not one community in America can stand up and say "we'll take them." We need to stand up to the terrorists and not let them win by terrifying us. http://www.newsy.com/videos/gitmo_suspects_to_stand_trial_in_u_s
