Here's a sign of work ahead:
As the first African-American president, born in Hawaii of a white mother from Kansas and black father from Kenya, was making his first visit to New Orleans as president today, the story out of Hammond, La., was of a justice of the peace denying a marriage license to an interracial couple.
Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, voiced a concern for any children of the marriage, maintaining that it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
"I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house," Bardwell said, denying any racial prejudice. "My main concern is for the children... I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves," Bardwell said. "In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer."
Right, like becoming president of the United States.
Thirty-year-old Beth Humphrey and 32-year-old Terence McKay, both of Hammond, say they will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.
"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzman. "The Supreme Court ruled as far back as 1963 that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."
Wire services contributed to a story reported by the Daily Star of Hammond.

Welcome to Southern hospitality.
My club has an exhibition of A. Lincoln artifacts. In honor of his 200th birthday.
The club was founded by his political supporters in Illinois ("Lincoln men").
Most interesting.
Including an effigy of Lincoln as a black man, with a photographic mask of Lincoln superimposed.
So some things haven't changed since1861.
Or so it would appear.

My god, what is it with these dumbarses in the South? No wonder they vote Republican all the time even when it's against their own well-being.
Has anyone told them this isn't the 1950's anymore?

"My main concern is for the children... I don't do interracial marriages because I don't want to put children in a situation they didn't bring on themselves...In my heart, I feel the children will later suffer." I don't really think that the GOP is ready to move in this direction. Sounds a lot like pro-abortion.

All I can say is that if that couple does get married - make sure you get a copy of the birth certificate.

"I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house," Bardwell said, I do the ceremony in the mudroom in back. I don't let them up into the living room like I do the other couples. It's not that we're racist or anything, it's just that we have some nice things in the living room, and you know how thier type is, and well, they make the Missus nervous..."

I just love that this man appoints himself arbiter of what most of black society thinks about anything.
Of course it's for the children. They don't turn out right. I mean next thing you know one of those bi-racial children might grow up to be President of the United States. Or and of the people featured in stories like this one.
http://newsone.com/nation/gallery-mutts-like-us-famous-biracial-people/
Or accomplished athletes like Derek Jeter, or that guy...what's his name? He plays golf. Or the kid across the street, or my son. Nope they all turn out bad so it's good we have Judge Bardwell looking out for things.
I hope someone is working on how to remove Judge Bardwell from office. He'll then have time to go on Druggy Limbaugh's AM Hate radio show to talk about how both of those well known "non-racists" are being mistreated.
Posted by: moreofthesame | October 15, 2009 6:22 PM
This is nearly beyond belief, yet somehow the cons. and Beck will say the couple are the racists and portray the Foghorn Leghorn JP as the caring progressive.
Plus, if they bring a lawsuit it will be portrayed as 'frivolous'.

La. has been a flutter the last couple of days over President Obama's visit and so much of it has an ugly racial tinge. Do I think Bardwell would have denied them the license even without the visit? Possibly, but there's not a doubt in my mind that President Obama's visit has pushed some of the uglier Teabagger type right wing racial prejudices to the surface.

ComeAsYouAre, one could also point out that there are Democratic constituencies that vote against their own self-interest.
Take inner-city blacks, for instance. They're a hyper-reliable Democratic constituency, despite Democratic policies that seem calculated to keep them poor and down on the plantation. Here's what Democrats say to that constituency:
- We'll give you welfare, enough to keep you from starving, but also enough to destroy your incentive to go out and get a job that will put you on the economic ladder.
- Oh yes, that welfare won't be enough so that you can come and live on the north shore by us!
- If there's a man in the house, we'll reduce or eliminate your welfare. (This policy, which dates from LBJ's Great Society, has been decried by no less than Daniel Patrick Moynihan as contributing to a permanent black underclass.)
- We're beholden to the teachers' unions, so we're not going to do anything to make them angry. No vouchers so that you can shop around for a better school than the one in your neighborhood. We'll allow charter schools, but only grudgingly and with a cap on the number, so that not everyone who wants to go to one can get in. Our teacher supporters don't like competition, so we're going to protect them from it. This has the side benefit of keeping you ignorant, so you'll continue to believe that we have your best interests at heart.
- The teachers aren't the only ones whose pockets we're in. The labor unions hate Wal-Mart, so we're not going to allow one in your neighborhood, even if it would provide jobs and cheap shopping. We need the union endorsements, and we know that you'll vote for us even if you have to spend all day on a Pace bus to the suburbs to get a bag of groceries.

There is a reason why the south has the lowest standard of living, the lowest level of education. It is stupidity. Not ignorance because that chould be cured. Well they had 150 years to get over this nonsense. If they would like to leave the country along with Texas I would be inclined to let them go.

Interracial couples don't stay together long. Why, I know about this one guy, his mom met this African student, and they were all in love and crap, but then, just a few years later, before the kid even knew him, the dad just up and takes off. The kid had all kinds of identity problems, growing up as a black kid but not knowing any black people, not even as family. Really screwed him up bad.
He's got some crappy job in Washington now - he's on call like 24/7, he has to clean up these huge messes left behind by the last idiot who had the post, and everyone blames him for everything the last idiot did.
He did just win the Nobel Peace Prize, though, so things aren't all bad, I guess...

You can't make this stuff up ... in 21st century America. They claim the Bible is clear on the subject, no racial mixing.
Science is clear on the subject. There's no such thing as race, genetically. Maximum mixing of the gene pool in a non-genetically selective environment is the best way to guarantee the genetic health of the human species.
Maximize the Gene Pool!

Welfare is not entirely the problem (cities like money), the problem is that private companies are not that thrilled about investing in the so called inner cities; understandably due to crime rates, or the profile of the type of consumer (deeper pockets) they are looking for that doesn't match the profile income of the surrounding area (or the hostile business environment). The companies that do invest will end up catering jobs that require higher end skills, they end up employing people from the 'brubs who commute (and all this brings in the whole other issue of the quality of education maintained in inner cities). The options then become welfare, minimum wage, or (the better paying) crime (like drugs of course). (It's no secret that people from the suburbs come down to the inner city to get their fix or the better off fund the trade. Deep pockets.) Pointing to one thing won't stop the cycle here, and neither side has a history of being there for the 11 percent of the American population. It would seem that every time they vote, they vote against themselves. They're still behind.

Keith Bardwell sounds like a really old man who's stuck in the past. How old is he? Can't he just be 'retired'? What's with all the anger? The important thing is that his comments sound so out of touch - which means the rest of us have all moved on. That's a good thing.

The Democrats have an unrepentant KKK member (Byrd) among their ranks. The Democrats continue programs which have destroyed the black community. Need proof? Look at the cities where they've run the show for a long time, like Detroit, DC, and other cities in ruin.

Oops, forgot one.
- Illegal immigrants are taking your jobs. We say, "The illegals are doing jobs that American citizens won't do," but that's all political doubletalk. The reality is that illegals, who don't have to be paid minimum wage, bid down the price for low-skilled work below what citizens will accept. Not only are we not going to do anything about that, we're going to raise the minimum wage, which will increase the incentive for employers to hire illegals instead of you! And, we're going to legalize those who are here now, so they can stay here and compete with you for jobs forever! After all, they'll probably vote for us!
K, since reading comprehension doesn't seem to be your strong suit, I'll boil it down for you:
1. Democratic policies are bad for minorities;
2. Minorities vote for Democrats anyway.
As for the blue collar union types, they seem to be doing a fine job of destroying themselves already, without any help from me.

I am unaware of anything in the Bible that prohibits interracial marriage. Those who oppose interracial marriage have resorted to manipulating the text of the Bible and twisting it out of context to make it say what it clearly does not. But, hey, what’s new?
.
And - BTW - there is such a thing as “race” - except that there is only one race. It’s called the Human Race. We are all part of the Human Race regardless of where we came from, the language we speak, the color of our skin, or any other personal feature that people want to use to divide us.

I searched on Fox News to get a perspective on what conservatives are saying about this interracial marriage flap.
Nothing!!
One article on the subject taken from the associated press...with no viewer comments allowed
Compare that to the pages and pages of articles and thousands of comments on a Fox News search of "Obama, Nobel Prize"
Seems like the conservatives are keeping a low profile on this one...and keeping their readers from making comments on it that might reveal their "racial opinions" on this.
I guess Fox is hoping this blows away quickly before some of their readers start throwing their support to the justice of the Peace.
