Halloween at the White House, a party for 2,600 (AP photo)
by Mark Silva
When a couple of children live in the White House, it's impossible for this day to pass without a Trick or Treat.
The president and First Lady Michelle Obama received about 2,600 children and adults invited to trick-or-treat at the White House for Halloween - the highlights: Michelle Obama as Cat Woman, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs appearing as Darth Vader, United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice as Goofy.
The north front of the White House was tinted orange and bedecked for Halloween as children began filing in at 5 p.m EDT.
Three giant pumpkins, each weighing about 1,000 pounds (grown in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin) were on hand. There were skeleton brass players and kettle drummers in black leotards, red and yellow butterflies in giant bubbles and two giant orange and black eyes peering out from first-floor windows, not to mention a giant black spider and cobwebs hanging over the North Portico.
Many of the characters - the walking "trees" on stilts, Star Wars and other characters handing out candy -- came from theatrical groups, including the Red Moon Theater in Chicago and Washington, D.C., companies.

The president, first lady and First Grandmother Marian Robinson, all smiling broadly, handed out treats for about 30 minutes from 6:30 to 7 p.m. on the front steps: White House M&Ms, a sweet dough butter cookie from the White House pastry shop and, of course, some dried fruit (cherries, apricots, pears, apples and papayas).
The children came from 11 area schools -- five in the District, three in Maryland and three in Virginia, all chosen by the Department of Education, Final count, according to the First Lady's staff, was 2,600 children and adults.
Inside, a couple hundred military families, chosen by each service, and White House staffers and their children roamed the first floor of the White House as an old-fashioned turntable played albums -- yes, albums.
The president and first lady arrived in the East Room at 7:12 p.m. to greet some of them personally. As the pool reporters were ushered out, the president spoke briefly. He told the military familiesm "We are so grateful to you," especially those who are separated from family members. He thanked staffers and their children, at which point the first lady piped in: "They're so cute!"
"They're adorable," the president said, "as is, by the way, my wife -- a very nice-looking Cat Woman."
With thanks for a treat of a pool report from Rich Wolf of USA Today.

In the event the president lacks ideas the geiko from Geiko is available. (Gibbs should wear that in to work.)

He won't say it, but does anyone really think Gibbs didn't have Cheney in mind when he chose that costume?
Oh, and Silva? You must not be much of "Star Wars" fan. Gibbs' son Ethan is dressed as Boba Fett. The bounty hunter that captures Han Solo.

Well, this shaministration is one big joke on the country. Robert Fibbs being Darth Vader and Susan Rice as Goofy are rather fitting, though Fibbs certainly could pass as Goofy too.
I wonder how much all of this cost the taxpayers too. Shipping in 1,000-pound pumpkins couldn't have been cheap.

It is great to see Fun rearing it's wonderful head again, in our White House. Let the Fun continue, let the children laugh and the adults play games. This is the season to be merry and hopefully, peace on earth and good-will towards all of humanity !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Michelle Obama for Catwoman!! None of the movie Catwomen have been as good as Eartha Kitt or Julie Newmar from the campy television series. But Michelle looks like she could handle the role.

all said and done, the money spent on the media stunt would of been better off being sent to some charity. Good luck in 2012, your going to need it. because if you dont start running this country and leading instead of campaigning for the next three years. Your going to be very lonely in the white house. Because everyone in congress is going to be either a republican or an independent.

Some people are just so critical of our president and first lady no matter what they do. I don't recall the last president doing anything like this. He was too busy fighting a war over imaginary weapons of mass destruction while ignoring the people at home.

This is a massive conspiracy! Those pumpkins were actually shipped straight from communist China and were designed to brainwash the children with Obama's new socialist nazi facist Kenyan gay-liberal agenda.
In reality, if John D had his way he would require the president to be locked in a small room with bare concrete walls where he must work for the rest of his term and never step outside, and never spend a dime of taxpayers money on anything. In fact, he's not even allowed to spend his own money. So what if they had giant pumpkins, so what if they had a halloween party. Is it really that bad to have a little fun? You're absolutely right John D, the thousands probably spent on this party could have saved the entire economy!
Bush got to play pilot and declare mission accomplished, not to mention spend more days on vacation than any other president (maybe he just couldn't take the cold Washington weather), and no one on the "right" side says a word, but Obama has a halloween party and all of a sudden he's a joke?

Considering how the Devil is in on all the details at the Obama White House, every day is now like Halloween at the White House.

Come on JD, they have the Easter Egg roll, and Christmas parties. Why not Halloween? To secular for you, imagine? You right-wing, fascist jerk.
And, by the way, President George H.W. Bush had a Halloween party at the White House, too.

The kids had a great time and to tell you the truth I'd rather see the White House open to the kids than the Hollyweird types. Good job President & Mrs. Obama.

"Glenn," no, this shaministration is not all of a suddent or joke or a trick, it's been that way from the beginning, especially when it spent $200 MILLION on the moron's inauguration.
Also, "Glenn," seems to me that I recently wrote the Obama's had the right to go out to dinner to celebrate their anniversary. I've even said they should not be cooped up in the White House.
But, "Glenn," why couldn't this shaministration bought a few dozen pumpkins at an area grocery store or far stand for a few hundred bucks rather than ship in 1,000+-pound pumpkins?
You have millions out of work and wondering how they are going to pay their next mortgage bill. You have an administration that just built up a $1.5 TRILLION deficit and will have at least $1 TRILLION for the next 10 years. These parties are on the taxpayer dime. All I'm saying is spend less, be mindful of our money and mindful that millions are hurting right now. AND, if you're administration is going to condemn excesses of business, then PRACTICE what you preach, especially with the taxpayer's money.

Very boring with an undecided war and people out of work.

All they are doing is having some fun with their children. They are a loving Family ..... are you saying this is a bad thing. To the one that thinks you are perfect and knows all of the answers, step forward and tell us what it is.

Sounds like fun! I hope the children in military families and those from local schools had fun (despite how much the GOP hates you for doing so). Another great idea from the first family!

To those who forever (and naively) cry about the cost....it was all money well spent (as in the case of other activities). Tax dollars were used to pay a wide array of private sector businesses. That includes the farmer and truck company and gas stations that benefited financially from providing the pumpkin purchase. I'm sure the money they earned will go far in various communities. Thanks for another great way to help kids and small businesses President Obama!

Has it occured to any of the critics of the spending that every dollar spent on these celebrations is money put into our own economy? The pumpkins came from an American farm, the candy from American factories, etc. Not to mention the extra American hands that were put to work on this activity.

the white house always had great celebrations for all of the holidays with pres. bush, but the press didn't cover it like obama. did you know, that under bush, the white house was wrapped in an enormous red bow for aid s day?

John D, your unrelenting attacks against the President and his "shaministration," as you call it, are boring, predictable and not at all clever. I might be inclined to pay attention to you if you had something concrete to criticize. First, however, I'd like you to successfully defend a draft-dodging, warmongering liar of a predecessor who used misinformation to dupe a nation into attacking two countries without cause.

We'll try this again with the pick-and-choose Swamp Censors:
Dear Racist, Bigoted, Homophobic, Totalitarian-loving Socialist Jerk Syj, Halloween doesn't scare me. This "right=wing facist jerk" has been to Halloween parties and even hosted. Curious as to how the Neanderthal-brained Syj gets me being anti-Halloween out of criticizing the cost of shipping in 1,000+ pound pumpkins when getting a hundred regular pumpkins for a few hundred dollars at an area grovery store or farm stand would have sufficed.
The Loony Left = truly, without a doubt the ABSOLUTE worst mankind has to offer.

John D,
$200 million for the inauguration? Really? What exactly did you use to make up that number? Perhaps you round off to the nearest $200 million. Worst case, there were estimates that it COULD cost 160. And looking at previous innaugurations, it was not out of line. Security is expensive.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/01/comparing-inauguration-costs/
When making your arguments, let's try to actually be factual. I'm all for restraining spending, but there is really no need to make things up to try and prove a point.

I wonder if George Bush was there in his flight suit and his Mission Accomplished banner. I didn't see him but you never know. Or maybe he went as a rough gruffy Texan cowboy type with faded blue jeans, leather boots, and a Stetson hat. If goofy John D. wants to talk about the worst mankind has to offer, you need to look no further than the Bush/ Cheney administration. You betcha.

OK, Martin, ABC News reported $170 million:
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/Inauguration/story?id=6665946&page=1&page=1
Anyway, the cost of security? Please. Bush spent $50 million on his and the media and the left went nuts. Obama more than triples it and there is just a yawn.
Posted by: John D, still right, as usual | November 2, 2009 3:13 PM
John,
I guess you were only over by $30 million. And of course you cherry picked the highest number that you could find.
And yes, security is expensive for an inauguration. It was this year, and it was 4 years ago. The total costs for either event are actually quite comparable, not that you would ever acknowledge it. I'm not quite sure how you think the most recent inauguration cost triple, perhaps ignoring 2/3's of the cost for President Bush's second inauguration helps you come up with that figure. Either way, your either blatantly lying, or choose to be ignorant in favor of making a false political point.
It's really simple math:
2005. Inaugurations costs estimated at $42.3 million. Security costs were estimated at $115 million. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/06/us/politics/06donors.html
2009 Inauguration costs estimated at $45 million. Security costs estimated at $125 million.
When you consider inflation, and the fact that the crowds at the 2009 event were somewhere around 4 times the size of 2005, it's really not all that shocking.

It is really good to see The President in action and that to at a trick-or-treat at the White House for Halloween. It seems as it was an evening full of fun at the White House.
